Sretensky Monastery Choir: The Power of Russian Music Friday, September 14, 2007; Page C10 Working from both sacred and secular texts, Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir filled the Library of Congress’s Coolidge Auditorium on Wednesday night with a vocal luster that extended as far as the expression of reverence and human passion can reach. And the auditorium was filled to the rafters with listeners, the audience including many religious dignitaries in colorful ritual dress. Cheers and applause erupted throughout the evening, one stop in the group’s first American tour, which marks this year’s reunification of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia with the Moscow Patriarchate. The choir regularly sings for services at its home, a medieval monastery within the Kremlin’s walls. The monastery was taken over by Soviet authorities in 1917 but was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1994, when the choir was established. The concert opened with four sacred Russian and Byzantine chants, the voices reverberating with powerful but unforced ardor. This sonorous quality dominated even in delicately hushed pianissimos. Much credit is due to artistic director Nikon Zhila’s bold, definitive conducting, which won the choir’s instant response and tonal splendor with the slightest flick of his fingers. Before the program began, the 41-member ensemble offered a solemn succession of Russian Orthodox chants in a tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The evening continued with Russian, Cossack and Ukrainian songs, followed by romances often in light opera style. Both texts and music centered on themes of nostalgia and yearning, whether for a distant homeland, absent lover or fallen comrade. Among the many fine soloists joining with the choir was the luminous bass Dmitry Beloselsky, whose dark, savory voice often reflected mournful longing for the Russian steppes. Bithos, PhD.: Thank you for your correction of this important fact; indeed the person remains unidentified. Sometimes, theology is sacrificed for other motives, political and financial influence being some of them. Fr. Dn. George P. Bithos, PhD. 14 апреля 2014, 22:00 I write with some sadness that this explanation of the Hymn of Kasianne perpetuates the popular misconception that the " sinful " woman of the hymn is Kasianne. How very sad. The hymn, which is a masterpiece of Orthodox hymnography, was authored by our devote Mother in Christ Kasia, the abbess of a Convent in Constantinople. Not only was she not a sinful woman, she abandoned the world to seek a life of prayer and contemplation. She stands today as one of the few women hymnographers of the Church. The sinful woman of the Gospels is unidentified, yet her story of repentance is described with great understanding and passion by Mother Kasia writing in ninth century Byzantium. As we listen to the hymn we should allow its message and the poetry of Mother Kasia to help us on our journey through this Great and Holy Week and to the Joy of our Lord " s Resurrection. Азбука веры Православная библиотека Orthodox books Contemporary Non-Orthodox Biblical Studies The Gospel of John Пожертвовать Вход Craig S. Keener The Gospel of John Источник Revelation of Jesus. 16:5-33 18:1-20:31. The passion and resurrection Jesus» prayer for disciples. 17:1–26 HERE JESUS SHIFTS FROM ADDRESSING the disciples to addressing the Father (17:1–26); after he returns to bestow the Spirit in 20:19–23, the disciples will pray directly to the Father for themselves (16:23–26) because he will have given them a new relationship with the Father (16:27) based on his own (16:28). Nevertheless, this prayer undoubtedly provides a model for their own; disciples concerned with their Lord " s agendas ought to place a high priority on unity with other disciples. Just as such unity would have helped them through the crisis imminent during Jesus» prayer (cf. 16:31–32), it would give believers victory in their continuing conflict with the world (16:33; cf. 13:35; 15:18–27). For comments on ancient prayer and believers praying as Jesus» representatives, see 14:13–14; cf. also comment on Jesus» prayer in 11:41–42. Introductory Issues Käsemann emphasizes the testamentary character of ch. 17, 9382 but as we have remarked earlier, the testament as a whole begins in ch. 13. Where the testamentary genre is most relevant to ch. 17 is the frequency of blessings and wish-prayers in testaments (e.g., Gen 49 ; Deut 32–33 ). 9383 That John closes the previous section of the last discourse before opening this prayer (τατα λλησεν, 17:1) suggests the prayer " s special significance for John " s audience. 9384 Käsemann rightly notes that much of the Gospel " s theology climaxes in this concluding section of Jesus» final discourse in the Gospel, 9385 though one should note that many other passages also provide prisms that refract larger cross sections of Johannine theology. As Minear points out, this prayer represents «the decisive turning point between ministry and passion,» viewing the hour of Jesus» glorification «both proleptically and retrospectively.» 9386

Как найти золотую середину между строгостью и излишней мягкостью в отношениях с детьми? Как правильно хвалить и наказывать ребенка? Есть ли случаи, когда стоит прибегать к физическому воздействию? Natalia Poklonskaya: “the Theotokos is guiding our Russia”/Православие.Ru Natalia Poklonskaya: “the Theotokos is guiding our Russia” Simferopol, July 10, 2015      In her interview with The Komsomolskaya Pravda Russian newspaper the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Crimea Natalia Poklonskaya answered the question, why she particularly venerated the Holy Russian Emperor and Passion-Bearer Nicholas II Alexandrovich. She also was asked whether she believed that monarchy would return in the future.      “Indeed it was a flagrant crime when Tsar Nicholas Alexandrovich was dethroned and then all his family was brutally murdered,” said the Crimea’s Prosecutor General. “And what is better and what will be next: a monarchy or a republic—is not my business”. With the delegation of the Orthodox Army Mission and the myrrh-streaming icon of Tsar Nicholas II – a photo from Natalia Poklonskaya’s Facebook page      “One nun had a vision: she was told to go down to the church vault in Kolomenskoye and find a “black board”. She was to wash it “so that it could become red,” and then she would see an image of the Mother of God on it . And indeed, the “Reigning” Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos was found in the church vault. That find bore deep significance. Following the murder of the royal family the Mother of God took up governing Russia. In red clothing and with Christ Child in Her arms, She is protecting and guiding our Russia. And may God help Russia to prosper,” said N. Poklonskaya, answering the question. 13 июля 2015 г.  The “Reigning” Icon of the Mother of God appeared on March 2/15, 1917, in Kolomenskoye village near Moscow (now a famous museum-reserve in Moscow situated in the district with the same name). New Interactive Exhibit at Antiochian Village: " Saint Raphael, Scholar and Shepherd "/Православие.Ru New Interactive Exhibit at Antiochian Village: " Saint Raphael, Scholar and Shepherd " Source: Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America      In honor of this year " s One Hundredth Anniversary of the Repose of Saint Raphael of Brooklyn, the Antiochian Heritage Museum recently opened an all-new exhibit about Saint Raphael, which includes an interactive touchscreen presentation. With the support of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America, the museum partnered with Wiant Design Works in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to create the updated display. The exhibit was unveiled during the meetings of the Archdiocese Board of Trustees held at the Antiochian Village in May. Titled " Saint Raphael: Scholar and Shepherd, " the museum " s new touchscreen exhibit offers highlights from the theological thesis which St. Raphael wrote as a young seminarian, and which was recently translated from its original Greek into English by the Rev. Dr. Patrick Viscuso. In addition to excerpts from the thesis, the touchscreen also explores highlights from the life of St. Raphael – from his youth in Damascus through his ministry as a priest and bishop in the United States. St. Raphael as a Young Scholar Ten years before St. Raphael began his ministry in America, he was still preparing to become a priest, studying at the prestigious Theological School of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on the island of Halki, near present-day Istanbul, Turkey. There, at the age of 25, he penned his theological thesis – in elegant cursive Greek – as a requirement for graduation. His thesis, dated May 1, 1886, outlines Orthodox Christian theology in relation to Roman Catholic and Protestant positions, and reflects his deep theological training as well as his experience living in the Eastern Mediterranean during a period when both Roman Catholic and Protestant missionaries were actively trying to convert Orthodox Christians. The passionate and well-researched paper oers us a unique glimpse into the mind of the saint, and shows the depth of his dedication to his Faith. It is an honor for the Antiochian Heritage Museum to be able to share excerpts from St. Raphael " s thesis for the time.

Abstract . Every Christian is called to the feat of asceticism. We see examples of ascetic life from the time of the first Christians. Saint Theophan the Recluse gave the first systematic exposition of the significance of asceticism for man. His teaching about the feat is still relevant today. The article examines the saint’s understanding of Christian asceticism, its purpose and stages, the significance of the sacraments of Baptism and Repentance in human life. Special attention is paid to the basics of Christian asceticism, which, according to the teachings of St. Theophan, are: the struggle against sins, surrender to the will of God, spiritual guidance, observance of the rules of Christian asceticism and penitential feeling. Revealing the foundations of the Christian feat, St. Theophan deduces the rules, the fulfillment of which requires self-compulsion and selfresistance. Further, the article discusses exercises that contribute to the development of the inner life of a person, as well as the laws recommended by St. Theophan, the struggle with passions.

Wonderworker and Unmercenary John Commemorated on January 31 Saint John, a pious Christian soldier, lived in Edessa during the persecution by Diocletian (284-305). When the persecution started, he went to Jerusalem and there he heard about Saint Cyrus. He began to search for him, going first to Alexandria and then to Arabia. When Saint John finally found Saint Cyrus, he remained with him and became his faithful follower. They learned of the arrest of the Christian woman Athanasia and her three young daughters. Theoctiste was fifteen; Theodota, was thirteen; and Eudoxia, was eleven. Saints Cyrus and John hastened to the prison to help them. They were concerned that faced with torture, the women might renounce Christ. Saints Cyrus and John gave them courage to endure what lay before them. Learning of this, the ruler of the city arrested Saints Cyrus and John, and seeing their steadfast and fearless confession of faith in Christ, he brought Athanasia and her daughters to witness their torture. The tyrant did not refrain from any form of torture against the holy martyrs. The women were not frightened by the sufferings of Saints Cyrus and John, but courageously continued to confess Christ. They were flogged and then beheaded, receiving their crowns of martyrdom. At the same place they executed the Holy Unmercenaries Cyrus and John. Christians buried their bodies in the church of the holy Evangelist Mark. In the fifth century the relics of Saints Cyrus and John were transferred from Canopis to Manuphin. Later on their relics were transferred to Rome, and from there to Munchen (Munich) (another account is located under June 28). Saints Cyrus and John are invoked by those who have difficulty in sleeping. Troparion — Tone 5 You have given us the miracles of Your martyrs, Cyrus and John,/as an invincible rampart;/through their prayers, frustrate the plans of the heathens,/and strengthen the faith of the Orthodox Christians,/for You alone are good and love mankind. Kontakion — Tone 3 Podoben: “Today the Virgin...”/Having received the gift of miracles through divine grace, O saints,/you work wonders in the world unceasingly./You remove all of our passions through your invisible surgery,/divinely-wise Cyrus and glorious John,/for you are truly divine physicians.
