The Panagia Malevi icon is believe to be one of the seventy painted by the Apostle and Evangelist Luke. The icon was found in its current place illumined by divine light. Three unsuccessful attempts were made to move the icon, so a church was built over it in 1116. The history of the icon and the Malevi Monastery can be read here . 14 февраля 2017 г. And that " s right. Evil is like a parasitic magnet that simply attracts more evil. Therefore if we manage to rid our hearts of evil passions then those blood stained nations that embody evil ie the english and turks will no longer be able to occupy our land. Martyr Menas of Alexandria Commemorated on December 10 The Holy Martyrs Menas, Hermogenes, and Eugraphus suffered for their faith in Christ under the emperor Maximian (305-313). Saint Menas was sent by the emperor from Athens to Alexandria to suppress the riots that had arisen between the Christians and the pagans. Distinguished for his gift of eloquence, Menas instead openly began to preach the Christian Faith and he converted many pagans to Christ. Learning of this, Maximian sent Hermogenes to Alexandria to place the saints on trial. Moreover, he gave orders to purge the city of Christians. Hermogenes, although he was a pagan, was distinguished by his reverent bearing. And struck by the endurance of Saint Menas under torture and by his miraculous healing after the cruel torments, he also came to believe in Christ. Maximian himself then arrived in Alexandria. Neither the astonishing stoic endurance of Saints Menas and Hermogenes under torture, nor even the miracles manifested by God in this city, mollified the emperor. Instead, they vexed him all the more. The emperor personally stabbed Saint Eugraphus, the secretary of Saint Menas, and then gave orders to behead the holy Martyrs Menas and Hermogenes. The relics of the holy martyrs, cast into the sea in an iron chest, were afterwards found (see February 17) and transferred to Constantinople in the ninth century. The emperor Justinian built a church in the name of the holy Martyr Menas of Alexandria. Saint Joseph the Hymnographer (April 4) composed a Canon in honor of these holy martyrs. Troparion — Tone 8 Having slain the fiery ragings and fierce movements of the passions though their ascetic labors,/the Martyrs of Christ, Menas, Hermogenes, and Eugraphus, received grace to dispel the afflictions of the infirm and to work wonders both while alive and after death./It is a truly great wonder that bare bones pour forth healing./Glory to our only God and Creator. Kontakion — Tone 4 The Lord snatched you from the temporal army making you a fellow inheritor of the eternal, O Menas;/together with Hermogenes and Eugraphus with whom you suffered,/you are granted an incorruptible crown. Istanbul Rums pondering before Turkey " s general elections/Православие.Ru Istanbul Rums pondering before Turkey " s general elections Halki Theological Seminary Some additional professional commitments during the last few weeks brought me closer to the small Greek Orthodox community of the Rums (Anatolian Greeks) of Istanbul. As this coincided more or less with this year’s Orthodox Easter celebrations, I was able to be with them at the most important date of their religious calendar. This year, that event fell just a few weeks before the crucial general elections in Turkey on June 12. There are several religious and social occasions where one can meet the few thousand Rums who remain today in Istanbul. Their historical churches spread all over the city and the Princes’ Islands were busy preparing their flocks with daily masses for the apex of the Greek Orthodox faith, Easter Sunday, occurring this year on April 24. The physical center of Orthodoxy, the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Fener, was the busiest of all holy locations, not only carrying out the ancient duties of the Holy Passion but also hosting a number of important religious and secular dignitaries who paid visits to its headquarters and attended mass in the Patriarchal Church of St. George. But it was not the religious aspect of this year’s celebrations that caught my attention most, although Orthodox Easter has never ceased to move me deeply since my childhood. It was the interesting conversations I managed to have with Istanbul Rums on the margins of several social events that accompanied this year’s religious festivities. These showed me that a few weeks before Turks decide whether or not they want a Justice and Development Party, or AKP, government for the third time, an ancient minority group like the Rums is as split as the country they belong to. Istanbul Rums have in general benefited from the AKP’s rise to power in 2002. The selection of the European Union as a national target by the present government created strong hopes among the Rums that their rights could be safeguarded within the framework of the EU acquis. These hopes were much enhanced when Turkey was declared officially a candidate member in 2004 and, even further, when formal accession negotiations started with the EU one year later. Hopes multiplied yet further when one of their major demands from the Turkish state was accepted and after 2007 they were able to hold elections for new councils of their self-governed community foundations.

Tweet Нравится Wedge between Russians and Ukrainians is devil’s work—Patriarch Kirill Moscow, January 26, 2017 Photo: http://ria.ru/      In a speech to the Russian State Duma on Thursday, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill spoke of the lamentable state of relations between Russians and Ukrainians, calling those technologies and tools aimed at separating them “the devil’s art.” Rather than drifting further apart in animosity, the primate called upon both groups to preserve their brotherhood, based on their shared faith and national heroes, writes RIA-Novosti . “Ukraine is going through a very difficult phase in its history. The confusion within the country has an impact on Russian-Ukrainian relations, largely conditioned, and this is a secret to no one, the actions of outside forces. But the people of Russia and Ukraine, now going through a serious trial, are called against all odds to preserve their brotherly fellowship and unity, to stand strong and not allow geopolitical millstones to grind our centuries-old cultural and spiritual solidarity,” said the patriarch. In the primate’s words, the use of sophisticated technologies and tools has “sown the seeds of discord and enmity with truly diabolical skill,” that all would be “immersed in an atmosphere of passion and insane hatred. “We are called not to forget our common national hero—the Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir, whose spiritual children we remain… In the family of the peoples of historical Rus’ there are no unwanted brethren,” concluded Patriarch Kirill. 26 января 2017 г. The most enigmatic text among the Russian descriptions of Constantinople in Palaeologan times is that called for convenience the “Russian Anonymus”. Cyril Mango has successfully dated the original work to 1391, but the versions we have are incomplete and bowdlerized, one version existing only as a portion of an ersatz dialogue on the virtues of pilgrimage to the imperial city. It is possible that the basic text used by the two works actually reflects a guidebook to the shrines and relics of Constantinople rather than a genuine pilgrim diary. Alexander “the Clerk” visited Constantinople “for shopping” (куплею), he says. His visit was probably in 1392 and seems to have lasted only a few days. Zosima, who is identified as a monk-deacon of the Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery near Moscow, came to Constantinople via Ukraine and the Danube in 1419 and was in the city for ten weeks before moving on to the holy Land where he also described the shrines and relics he saw. From the lack of clarity in his topographical notes it is likely that he wrote his final version after he had returned to Muscovy. There is no specific indication of why he visited the imperial city, but the fact that he went on to visit Palestine suggests that he was a genuine pilgrim rather than someone travelling on business, (ecclesiastical or secular) and “monlighting” as a pilgrim. (Zosima, however, had earlier visited the city “on business”, specifically, escorting the young Muscovite princess Anna to Constantinople to become the fiancée of the future Emperor John VIII ). On all of these visitors see Majeska G. Russian Travelers to Constantinople in the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Centuries (Dumbarton Oaks Studies 19), Washington, 1984, which includes texts of these pilgrim descriptions of Constantinople and English translations, as well as explanatory materials. 1067 Compare the description of the passion relics in Anthony, Книга паломник, p. 18–19, or Mercati Anonymus, p. 245–246, with the post-crusade description by Ruy Gonzalez de Clavijo. Martyred Brothers in Cappadocia Commemorated on January 16      The Holy Martyrs Speusippus, Eleusippus, Meleusippus, and their grandmother Leonilla together with Neon, Turbo and Jonilla suffered in Gaul (by another account, in Cappadocia) in the second century, during the persecution under Marcus Aurelius (161-180). Leonilla received Baptism in her old age from one of the disciples of Saint Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, and she afterwards converted her three grandsons (who were triplets) to Christ. The brothers, in their zeal for the Lord, pulled down idols and reproached the pagans for their folly. The judge ordered Leonilla to go to the prison and tell her grandchildren to renounce Christ and worship the idols. Instead, she praised them for their bravery and their firm confession of faith. All three were hanged on a tree, then flogged. Finally, the martyrs were thrown into a fire, but their bodies were undamaged by the flames. After the torture and death of her grandchildren, Saint Leonilla was beheaded with a sword. Saint Jonilla also suffered with her. She saw the steadfast faith of the holy martyrs and said that she too was a Christian. The torturers hung her up by the hair, lacerated her body, then beheaded her. She left behind her husband and young son. Saint Neon witnessed the exploits of the holy brothers, and wrote an account of their sufferings. He gave his manuscript to Turbo, and openly confessed himself a Christian, for which he was fiercely beaten and died from his beating. Saint Turbo, after he copied out the exploits of the passion-bearers, also ended his life by martyrdom. These martyrs are particularly revered in Spain, where many churches are dedicated to them. The relics of the holy martyrs were given by the Byzantine emperor Zeno to a French nobleman from the city of Langres, where they now rest. Troparion — Tone 4 Your holy martyrs, O Lord,/Through their sufferings have received an incorruptible crown from You, our God./For having Your strength, they laid low their adversaries,/And shattered the powerless boldness of demons./Through their intercessions, save our souls! Thousands participate in Palm Sunday procession in Bucharest Moscow, April 12, 2017 Photo: Basilica.ro      Dozens of priests led a procession through the streets of Bucharest on Saturday, April 8, on the eve of Palm Sunday. Thousands of believers joined in the march from Radu Voda Monastery to the Patriarchal Cathedral, in celebration of the Lord’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, reports the Basilica News Agency . Photo: Basilica.ro    The priests and faithful, blessed palms in hand, were greeted on the hill of the patriarchate by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, who blessed an icon of the feast before addressing the faithful gathered with words of spiritual insight and encouragement for the coming journey to the Lord’s Passion and Resurrection. Photo: Basilica.ro      In his homily, His Beatitude explained the palms and willow branches as symbols of faith and of the virtues acquired through an active life in the Church, including fasting, praying, and frequent participation in the Holy Mysteries, and through good deeds. “They are bright flowers of faith that have gathered in our souls for forty days. We offer these flowers of faith and spiritual feats to our Savior as a sign of thanksgiving and as a petition to sanctify our life and to grant us the joy of Holy Pascha... A willow resembles a man who fasted for a long period, who knelt many times, who made many prostrations and who has inner spiritual beauty,” the Romanian primate expounded. Photo: Basilica.ro      Photo: Basilica.ro      The patriarch also noted that the traditional Palm Sunday procession had been banned in Romania for sixty years, from 1948 to 2008. Speaking of its revival, he proclaimed, “Thus, we have demonstrated that we are re-establishing a healthy Christian tradition.” He also noted that, living in a time of political freedom, believers have an even greater responsibility to use that freedom to draw nearer to God. Photo: Basilica.ro      “Here we are, the priests of the whole city of Bucharest, together with the parishioners of the churches in the capital, to confess our love for the Orthodox faith. It is as if we were in Jerusalem at the time of our Savior,” said then 84-year-old Fr. Nicholas Bordaiu at that historic procession. 12 апреля 2017 г. скрыть способы оплаты скрыть способы оплаты Смотри также Комментарии Подпишитесь на рассылку Православие.Ru Рассылка выходит два раза в неделю: Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку
