Venerable Anthony the Abbot of Siya, Novgorod Commemorated on December 7 Saint Anthony of Siya, in the world Andrew, was born into a family of rich farmers in the village of Kekhta near the North Dvina river. In childhood he received a fine education, read much and learned iconography. After the death of his parents, Andrew went to Novgorod, and for five years worked for a boyar [nobleman] there. He later married, but his wife died after a year. Then Andrew decided to devote himself to monasticism. He distributed his goods to the poor and as a wanderer came to the Pachomiev wilderness monastery at the River Kena. Saint Pachomius tonsured him with the name Anthony. Soon he was ordained a hieromonk, and Anthony, with the blessing of the igumen, celebrated the divine services by himself. He went out with the other monks of the monastery to work for the monastery’s needs. Out of love for solitude Saint Anthony eventually left the Pachomiev wilderness, after choosing two companions from the monastic brethren, and he settled upon Mikhailov Island, on the one side washed by the River Sii, and on the other, by encircling lakes. In this harsh frontier within the dense thickets Anthony built a chapel in 1520. But to clear the forest required difficult work, and Anthony’s companions began to grumble against him. Then quite unexpectedly an unknown man furnished them with the means of subsistence, offering money for good measure. The Siya monastery became famous, and inhabitants of surrounding villages often visited it. And again Saint Anthony, taking one disciple, withdrew to a still more remote place on Lake Palun. There, in a solitary cell, he dwelt for three years. When the igumen Theoctistus refused to guide the Siya monastery any longer, the brethren tried to persuade Saint Anthony to return to them. He finally acceded to the request of the monks, again became igumen and piously guided the monastery until his death in the year 1556, when he was seventy-nine years old. Troparion — Tone 1 You renounced the world in favor of the spirit,/Seeking the one God with your whole heart, O Anthony./You retreated to a far wilderness, near waters,/In tears and labors living the angelic life./You gathered a multitude of monks in your wisdom./Visit them and cease not to implore the Holy Trinity/To deliver us from evil/And to save our souls! Kontakion — Tone 8 From your youth you exhausted your flesh by fasting and prayer,/And taking up your cross, you followed Christ./Having joyfully completed your journey to heaven,/You stand with the saints before the Holy Trinity./Now visit your flock and remember those who honor you,/That all the faithful may cry out in thanksgiving:/Rejoice, O wise and righteous Anthony, guide of desert-dwellers! The Lives of the Georgian Saints Archpriest Zakaria Machitadze The Lives of the Georgian Saints Archpriest Zakaria Machitadze Since the time of the ancient Greek historians, Georgia has been viewed as an enigma hidden behind impenetrable mountains and a complex language. Little has been written about this small country and its saints. Now, Pravoslavie.Ru presents the entire collection of the Lives of the Georgian saints which has been translated for the first time into English. These lives encompass the seventeen hundred years of Orthodox Christianity in Georgia. The stories of ascetics and bishops, warriors and noblemen are intertwined with the tumultuous history of the Georgian land. Holy Queen Dinar (10th century) Commemorated June 30/July 13 Holy Queen Dinar (10th century) Archpriest Zakaria Machitadze The Russian Church has preserved chronicles of the life of Queen Dinar, a woman who achieved much on behalf of the Christian Faith. For years scholars have disputed about the historical figure discussed in great depth in the Russian Church. Many believed that the sources described Holy Queen Tamar, but the period of Tamar’s rule does not match that of the figure described in the chronicles. Syria: details of massacre of Christians at Sadad revealed. Bodies of a whole family, including the elderly and teenagers, found inside a well Damascus, November 7, 2013      The burial of a Christian family, murdered by Muslim extremists, took place on November 4 in the Syrian settlement of Sadad, reports Blagovest.info. Bodies of six people were found inside a well of the settlement which was retaken by the government troops from the islamists of the Al-Nusra front. The mass murder was probably committed on October 26. Among those killed there were: 85-year-old Matanios Ash-Sheikh, his 75-year-old wife Habsa, their 45-year-old daughter Njala, and two grandsons: a 18-year-old university student Ranim and a 16-year-old school student Fadi. The sixth victim of the militants was 90-year-old Mariam, the teenagers " grandmother from the side of their father. The total number of victims in Sadad, whose population consists mainly of believers of the Syriac Church, is 45 people. The history of this settlement goes back to 2000 b.C., it is first mentioned in the Old Testament as Cedad. To this day local residents speak Aramaic—the language that Jesus Christ spoke. During his talk with representatives of the " Aid to Church in need " charity, the Melkite (Greek-Catholic) Patriarch Gregory III Laham of Antioch called the actions of the militants in Sadad " brutality " . " I do not understand why the world community is not raising its voice for denouncing such cruelty, " said the Hierarch. On November 7, Patriarch Gregory was to speak at the panel discussion on the situation in Syria, organized by " Aid to Church in need " in Augsburg (Germany). In October the head of Syrian Melkites visited Great Britain on invitation of the same aid organization, where he called upon the politicians, journalists, and Christian congregations to give support to the persecuted followers of Christ in his country. The manslaughter in Sadad has become the bloodiest act of violence towards Christians for the whole period of the civil war in Syria that began in March 2011. In the eyes of local Christians, those killed in Sadad are genuine martyrs, for they suffered exclusively for their faith. Pravoslavie.ru 8 ноября 2013 г. ... Archbishop Demetrios of America Crosses Edmund Pettus Bridge with President Obama March 7, 2015 Archbishop Demetrios of America, together with President Barack Obama and other major civic and religious leaders, walked today, March 7, 2015, the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge to commemorate the 50th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday.”      On March 15, 1965, Archbishop Iakovos of North and South America had come here and participated in the March on Selma, led by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Upon his arrival to Selma, Archbishop Demetrios noted, “It is truly a blessing to travel to Selma to pay tribute to the legacy of both Dr. King and Archbishop Iakovos. The promotion and protection of civil rights transcends politics since the ability to determine one’s future is a God-given blessing.” His Eminence had the opportunity to greet President Obama, the First Lady and their daughters Malia and Sasha in a private holding room prior to the 50 th anniversary commemoration rally. Following the presidential address, Archbishop Demetrios marched with President Barack Obama and his family, former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura, U.S. Senators and Congressmen, and leaders who had participated in the 1965 events. After thanking everyone for their participation and before departing, President Obama embraced Archbishop Demetrios and noted the significance of faith in the Civil Rights Movement. Congressman John Lewis, who walked the bridge on Bloody Sunday 50 years prior, asked Archbishop Demetrios to offer a prayer for the people of Selma and for the Nation. At the conclusion of the events Archbishop Demetrios made the following statement to the Press: “Today we remember the fight, the faith, the persistence and the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and we also remember the courage of Archbishop Iakovos of blessed memory and their time together here in Selma. It is a very significant and moving day, a day of deep emotions, thankfulness to God for what was achieved, and fervent prayer for the work that lies ahead.” As the Archbishop of America and the successor of Archbishop Iakovos, a staunch supporter of the Civil Rights Movement and the highest-ranking religious leader to march alongside Dr. King in Selma in 1965, Archbishop Demetrios continues the longstanding legacy of the Orthodox Church to fight against racism and to defend human rights. Archbishop Demetrios of America is the leader of the Greek Orthodox Church in America and the Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He is also the Chairman of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America. 9 марта 2015 г. Смотри также Комментарии J Clivas 13 марта 2015, 16:00 Cool it, Tzimi. priest Dmitry Ermakov (священник Димитрий Ермаков) The inner meaning of Tradition Orthodox history is marked outwardly by a series of sudden breaks: the capture of Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem by Arab Muslims; the burning of Kiev by the Mongols; the two sacks of Constantinople; the October Revolution in Russia. Yet these events, while they have transformed the external appearance of the Orthodox world, have never broken the inward continuity of the Orthodox Church. The thing that first strikes a stranger on encountering Orthodoxy is usually its air of antiquity, its apparent changelessness. He finds that the Orthodox still baptize by threefold immersion, as in the primitive Church; they still bring babies and small children to receive Holy Communion; in the Liturgy the deacon still cries out: ‘The doors! The doors!’ – recalling the early days when the church’s entrance was jealously guarded, and none but members of the Christian family could attend the family worship; the Creed is still recited without any additions. These are but a few outward examples of something which pervades every aspect of Orthodox life. When the Orthodox are asked at contemporary inter-Church gatherings to summarize what they see as the distinctive characteristic of their Church 1 , they often point precisely to its changelessness, its determination to remain loyal to the past, its sense of living continuity with the Church of ancient times. At the start of the eighteenth century, the Eastern Patriarchs said exactly the same to the Non-Jurors 2 : “We preserve the Doctrine of the Lord uncorrupted, and firmly adhere to the Faith he delivered to us, and keep it free from blemish and diminution, as a Royal Treasure, and a monument of great price, neither adding any thing, nor taking any thing from it. ” 3 This idea of living continuity is summed up for the Orthodox in the one word Tradition. “We do not change the everlasting boundaries which our fathers have set,” wrote John of Damascus, “but we keep the Tradition, just as we received it. ” 4
