The greatest and most influential Russian Athonites have been saintly examples of humility, poverty, and prayer. The foremost of these were St Antony Pechersky, who came to Athos shortly after 1051, and St Paisy Velichkovsky, who was there from 1746 to 1762. Both made their way via Kiev to the Holy Mountain on foot. They were tonsured after they had arrived; they lived there in extreme self-denial, and then they left to continue the Athonite tradition in monastic communities at home. St Antony, the founder of the great Kievan monastery of the Caves, is considered the father of Russian monasticism. In the seventeen short years St Paisy spent on Mount Athos he became spiritual father to monks of many nationalities, one of whom was Patriarch Seraphim I. St Paisy’s personal qualities transcended ethnic barriers. He knew that the ability to maintain harmonious inter-ethnic relations was a gift others did not have. He was in charge of ethnically mixed brotherhoods: in the Prophet Elijah skete of Athos, 370 and, once he had left for the Danubian principalities, in the monasteries of Neam and Secul. In all three houses his brethren were Slav and Romanian; divine office was read and sung in both languages. St Paisy knew that maintaining harmony in an ethnically diverse community was possible only with great cenobitic discipline, and that only leaders with exceptional gifts could enforce it. 371 On Athos, St Paisy was at the forefront of spiritual revival: he espoused the traditionalists’ side in the Kollyvades debate and resurrected ancient patristic texts hidden away on dusty shelves of Athonite libraries. A little over a decade after his departure, Sts Nikodimos of the Holy Mountain and Makarios of Corinth were instrumental in reviving Greek Orthodox patristic traditions, the Philokalia, and cenobitic monasticism on the Holy Mountain. All three saints were crucially influential in the latter half of the eighteenth century when feelings of revolutionary independence were stirring in all Greeks.

Yet, after the armed conflict had broken out, the situation of religious minorities in the country has sharply deteriorated. It is known that many radical extremists from various countries, whose aim is to “cleanse” the Middle East region from all non-Muslims, are among those committing terrorist attacks in Syria. As a result, Christians in Syria are facing persecutions which are becoming ever more threatening. According to Metropolitan Isaac of Apamea (Orthodox Church of Antioch), Syrian Christians see “something unthinkable happening after militants have appeared” in the country: churches are being destroyed, clergymen are being kidnapped, Christians are being evicted from their houses and being killed. In April, Bishop Luke of Saydnaya (Orthodox Church of Antioch) told the media that almost one hundred forty thousand Syrian Christians had been banished from their houses and Christian churches were being systematically destroyed. “They are killing people. Human life is of no value for them,” he said. On 22 April 2013, militants from an extremist group abducted Syrian Christian hierarchs: Metropolitan Paul of Aleppo (Patriarchate of Antioch) and Metropolitan Mar Gregorios Yohanna Ibrahim (Syriac Orthodox Church); the deacon who was driving the car was killed; the hierarchs are still held captive. As was reported on 11 May 2013, militants have destroyed the ancient Orthodox Monastery of St Elijah the Prophet near Al-Qusayr: they have plundered the abode, taken away all church utensils, blown up the belfry and destroyed the altar and the baptismal font.

After 1922 and the population exchanges between Greece and Turkey, the area was declared a restricted military zone and the church survived as an ammunition depot. However, while this designation served as protection for as long as the area remained a military zone, the Izmir Municipality’s plans for the construction of a new highway have now put its very existence in danger. In 2011, Doay Korkmaz, a postgraduate student of architecture at the Izmir Institute of Technology, presented his master thesis, titled “Investigation of Conservation Problems of the Prophet Elias (Elijah) Church in Izmir,” the only known study of the church so far. The potential destruction of Profitis Ilias will erase all hope for future research on the structure and remnants from previous eras that might still exist on the ground. This would have a negative impact on the study of Christian Smyrna and most of all on the history of the Greeks of Asia Minor, whose places of worship continue to vanish at an alarming rate after 90 years of neglect. After that, His Beautitude inspected the Great Mosque in Arbin, which was completely destroyed with only the minaret left standing. Patriarch John X then headed to  Harasta  at the head of a church delegation to inspect the Church of the Prophet Elijah, which was completely destroyed. He regretted what had been done to it by the hand of terror and the language of destruction, which has nothing to do with religion or morals. His Beatitude affirmed, however, that in the end, everything will return– churches, mosques and homes– and that this return will be realized through the love and mutual support of the people of Harasta, both Christians and Muslims. His Beatitude then inspected the tombs that had been defiled by the hand of terror. Patriarch John X likewise inspected the al-Zahra Mosque, observing the extent of the destruction to which it had been subjected. New persecutions followed and the Prophet of God fled to the mountain of Choreb. There Elijah experienced the presence of God as a voice of thine air (III Kings 19:11-12). Elijah was taken to Heaven on a chariot of fire (IV Kings 2:11), and gave to his disciple Elissaios his blessings to have twice the portion of God’s Grace which he himself received (IV Kings 2:9). Elijah is one of the holiest prophets and greatest personalities of the Old Testament. He never left any writings behind. His zeal to preserve the true faith in God made him well known throughout the centuries till today. In the Books of the Prophet Malachi (4:4) and the Wisdom of Sirach (48:1-15) his second coming foretells that he shall prepare the world of the coming of the Messiah. And, behold, says the Lord, I will send to you Elijah the Thesbite, before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes; who shall turn again the heart of the father to the son, and the heart of a man to his neighbour, lest I come and smite the earth grievously (Malachi 4:4). In the New Testament the Prophet Elijah appeared with Moses on Mount Tabor at Christ’s Transfiguration (Matth. 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-13; Luke 9:28-36). According to the Book of Revelation, before the Second Coming of Christ, the two Prophets Enoch and Elijah will come again and they will prophecy for three and a half years (Rev. 11:3). When they finish their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them (Rev. 11:7). After three-and-a-half days the breath of life from God shall enter them, and they shall come back to life, and great fear shall fall upon those who killed them. They will ascend into heaven in a cloud (Rev. 11:12). In the New Testament Christ Himself used the Prophet Elijah as an example to describe the zeal of St. John, the Baptist. He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord (Luke 1:17). When our Lord was asked by His disciples: Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first? He replied saying: Indeed, Elijah is coming first and will restore all things. But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished (Matth. 17:12). For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come (Matth. 11:13-14).

The Lord consoled Elijah and said that among the Israelites there were still 7,000 men who did not worship idols, and that after him He would raise up among them the Prophet Elisha, whom He commanded Elijah to anoint. This appearance of the Lord showed Elijah that the Lord not only is punishing and stern Judge, but a merciful Father. It also prefigured the coming to earth of Jesus Christ, Who would come not to judge and punish, but to forgive and save people. Elijah, in accordance with God? direction, anointed Elisha as a prophet, who then became his disciple. Once when they were together, Elijah said to Elisha, «Ask what I shall do for thee before I am taken away from thee,» Elisha replied, «I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.» Elijah said, ?hou hast asked a hard thing; nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, then shall it be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.» They went on further. Suddenly there appeared a chariot of fire with horses of fire, and Elijah was taken up into Heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha, seeing this, cried, «My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof!» These words of the Prophet Elisha meant that the holy Prophet Elijah, by his prayers, protected the kingdom of Israel from its enemies better than all the Israelite forces, the chariots and horses. At this time the mantle, that is, the outer garment of Elijah, fell at Elisha? feet. Elisha lifted this up and with it received the double gift of prophecy. Note: See I Kings, chaps. 16–19; II Kings, chaps. 1, 2:1–15. The Prophet Elisha. The holy Prophet Elisha was the son of a farmer named Shaphat (I Kings 19:19). God made the Prophet famous by many miracles. After Elijah was taken up into Heaven Elisha had to cross the river Jordan. He struck the water with the mantle of Elijah. The water parted, and he crossed on the dry river bed. When Elisha came to the city of Jericho, the inhabitants of the city said to him, «Our water is bad, and because of this the ground is barren.» Elisha threw salt into the spring of water and the water became tasty and healthful.

The Prophet Elijah      One of God’s greatest Prophet in the Old Testament is the Prophet Elijah. He lived and prophesied, according to the Books of Kings (III Kings 17:1 – IV Kings 2:18), during the days of Achaab (873-854 B.C.) and Ochozia (854-853 B.C.). His zeal for the true faith in the one and only God of Israel led him to resist against the evil queen Jezabel, who abandoned the true God and ordered the Israelites to worship the false god Baal (III Kings 16:29-33). King Achaab and the wicked Queen Jezabel persecuted the prophets and the priests of God, and many of them were inprisoned and put to death. God foretold Elijah, that Jezabel seeked to kill him and he fled into the desert, at the torrent of Chorrath (today: Badi Jiambis), near the river Jordan. God provided that a raven visit and feed His Prophet bringing him bread in the morning and flesh in the evening (III Kings l7:2-6). But when the stream of Chorrath dried, Elijah left to Sarepta of Sidon. There he was welcomed into the house of a poor widow and through his prayers God blessed the oil and flower jars, so that they will never be empty. In that period the widow’s only begotten son died and Elijah prayed to God of Israel to bring back the soul of the young man. The miracle took place and the Prophet of God gave the widow her son in full health (III Kings 17:7-24). Elijah appeared to King Achaab and chalenged the false prophets to prove who is true God, the God of Israel or Baal (III Kings 18:16-40). Four hundred and fifty priests of Baal gathered at the mountain of Carmelos (III Kings 18:22). Elijah order that two altars should be built and two bulls should be sacrificed. Whichever god would send flames of fire from heaven and burn the offerings, He is the true God. They all agreed. The priests of the false god Baal prayed from sunrise to sunset and nothing happened (III Kings 18:24-28). When Elijah prayed he ordered that the sacrificial bull be placed on the altar and that water be poured over the altar three times, fire immediately came from heaven and burnt everything (III Kings 18:36-38). Nothing was left, even the ground sorrounding the altar with the rocks was burnt. After this miracle Elijah order the people to slaughter the false prophets of Baal (III Kings 18:40).

In the Judean kingdom all the kings came from the line of David, but few of them were kind or pious. The people, imitating the impious kings, sinned much before God. To make the Hebrew people, both the Judeans and the Israelites, come to their senses, the Lord sent many prophets. Note: See I Kings, chaps. 12–15; II Chron., chaps. 10–13. 37. The Prophets The prophets were people who, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, prophesied, that is, foretold what would be in the future, especially about the coming Saviour of the world. They announced the will of God, taught the people true faith and piety, and performed various signs and miracles. They exposed the idolatry of the Hebrews and called them to repent. Some of them preached only orally, and others, in addition, left behind sacred books, written by them under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The most famous of the prophets living in the Israelite kingdom were, Elijah, Elisha and Jonah, and of the prophets living in the Judean kingdom, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Micah, Ezekiel and Daniel. The Prophet Elijah. The Prophet Elijah lived during the reign of the impious Israelite King Ahab, who worshipped the idol Baal and also forced the people to do so. Elijah came to Ahab and in the name of God announced to him, eBecause of your godlessness, there will be neither dew nor rain during these years except by the word of my mouth.» So it came to pass. A terrible drought began. Even the grass died and there was a famine. Elijah, by God? will, settled in the desert by a stream where ravens brought him bread and meat, and he drank the water from the stream. When the stream dried up, God ordered the Prophet to go to the pagan town of Zarephath in Sidon to a poor widow and live with her. This widow, who lived with her son, had only one handful of flour and a little oil. Going to Zarephath, Elijah told her to bake bread for him and promised that the flour and oil would not diminish as long as the Lord did not send rain to the earth. The woman trusted the Prophet of God and did as he told her, her flour and oil did not diminish. Soon this widow? son fell ill and died. The Prophet Elijah for three days prayed to God for him and the boy came back to life.
