Archpriest Mikhail Satsiuk, October 12, 1998 The rector of St. Nicholas Church was killed on October 12, 1998, in Brest.  The same day his corpse was found in an automobile on an exit road from the city. The investigation concluded that the motive for the murder was financial; the murderer pursued the purpose of robbery. Hieromonk Dimitry (Rasstegayev), January 1998 The Old Rite priest,  was atrociously murdered in January 1998, in the Yaroslavl region. The motive of his death was his flat in Yaroslavl, which the young priest was going to sell, leaving for a new parish in Belaya Krinitsa.  A gang of burglars, which settled in the Yaroslavl region under the guise of the real estate firm “Partner”, killed the clergyman, dismembered his body, and threw it into the basement of the house, where a drunken party began. The criminals were caught only after three years. Archpriest Boris Ponomarev, July 16, 1999 The rector of the Church of the Prophet Elijah, was killed on July 16, 1999, in the Ilyinsk settlement, Mozhaisk district of Moscow region.  The police solved the murder rather quickly. It turned out that the priest was murdered by three repeat criminals. They were parishioners of his church and the archpriest sometimes invited them to come to see him. The criminals noticed several ancient icons at his home and decided to rob the priest. In the night they broke into Ponomarev’s home, tied up his wife and a female relative, and killed the priest himself. Archpriest Peter Sukhonoso v, March 28, 1999 The rector of the Holy Protection Church in the Cossack station Sleptsovskaya (Ingushetia), was kidnapped on March 28, 1999, by four bandits, who attacked the church in which he had served for more than forty years. He died in captivity.   Hieromonk Simeon (Anosov) , August 23, 2000 The rector of the Church of St. Andrew the First-Called in Barnaul (Altai territory) was killed on August 23, 2000.  The murderer was the former hieromonk’s driver, Konstantin Shlenkov, who had been previously convicted several times.

Value of VasilyPoznyakov walking lies in richness in legends and news heard by the travelers when visiting monasteries and churches of the Orthodox East. Some legends date back to the biblical plots, such as the one about the Prophet Elijah, about the deeds of the prophet Moses and others; there also are a lot of mentions and people from New Testament Apocryphal stories take significant place in the walking. One of the plots, the miracle with the Patriarch of Alexandria Joachim, was included as a separate story into the Russian Chronograph and Old Russian collections of XVII–XVIII centuries. The same task, financial assistance to the Middle East Orthodoxy, was completed in 1583 by Ivan Mishenin and aforementioned TrifonKorobeynikov and Mikhail Ogarkov and the same TrifonKorobeynikov in 1593. However, in these both cases Russian tsars themselves had a need for spiritual communication: “Moscow merchant, and there is a speculation that he also was a clerk, Trifon Korobeynikov… was a participant of the Embassy of Ivan IV to Constantinople and Mount Athos, sent in 1582 in remembrance of soul of the murdered prince John Ivanovich. In 1593–1594 years Korobeynikov visited Constantinople and Jerusalem with the clerk M. Ogarkov, sent again with alms, but grace, for the birth of princess In 1603 the Jerusalem delegation from Patriarch Sophronius IV headed by Archimandrite and oncoming Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophan III made a return visit to the court of Boris Godunov. Theophan III, already being the Patriarch, visited Moscow for the second time in 1619 in connection with the enthronement of Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Philaret. In 1585–1586 years Patriarch of Antioch Joachim V took a trip to Russia and became the first representative of Eastern Orthodoxy, who personally visited Moscow. He was forced by plight of his throne, which had big debts. His visit was used by Tsar Feodor Ivanovich to start negotiations on establishment Patriarchate in Rus. Joachim agreed to intercede for it after returning to the East. As a result, in 1590 the Metropolitan of Moscow Job was exalted in the rank of Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia.

Archive Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk: We have supported and will support the canonical Church of Montenegro 4 August 2020 year 13:32 In the evening of August 2, 2020, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate department for external church relations, took part in the live stream of the Internet-Litija Montenegro program. – Your Eminence, first of all allow me to thank you on behalf of Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral and other hierarchs of the Serbian Orthodox Church, whose jurisdiction extends to Montenegro, for having found a possibility, despite all your high duties as chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, to meet with us on this festive commemoration day of the Prophet Elijah in the Internet-Litija program.   After the adoption of a law on the freedom of faith and legal status of the religious communities, whereby the state can confiscate the property of the Montenegro dioceses of the Serbian Orthodox Church, people in Montenegro took to streets in protest against the injustice imposed on our Church. Our Church and our people have come out against the anti-Church law peacefully marching with dignity and prayer in procession with the cross. For several months, each Thursday and Sunday, our people called upon our authorities with love and prayer to revoke this contradictory law or change its most disputable articles. In connection with the COVID-19 measures, the prayer processions were suspended and moved to the internet space. We know that you are well aware of the process, which was going on in Montenegro for many years and which intensified last year as a law was unilaterally adopted in the end of 2019 that infringes on the rights of the Serbian Orthodox Church.  The best testimony of your awareness of this problem is your public addresses and the statements made by the highest bodies of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Holy Synod and His Holiness Patriarch Kirill.

[Esref.Ucar/Panoramio] Plans for a new highway are threatening one of the last surviving Greek Orthodox churches in the region of Izmir (Smyrna) in Turkey. Profitis Ilias (named after the Prophet Elias/Elijah, a revered figure for both Christians and Muslims) is a three-aisled basilica commissioned in 1846 by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Anthimus VI. Its dimensions are 10 by 19 meters and it has a quadrilateral rooftop. It lies on a prominent spot on the road to the suburb of Budjah, 2 kilometers southeast of the city center, in St Anne’s Valley, where the Meles River (Yeildere) flows under the Sirinyer and Yesildere aqueducts, which date to Roman times. Profitis Ilias is set to be demolished at a time when the ambitious plans of the Izmir Municipality to revive lost city monuments are in full swing. Recently an entire neighborhood near the slopes of Mount Pagos and the Kadifekale fortress was razed to the ground in order to allow for the excavation of the scant remains of an ancient Roman theater. The authorities plan to reconstruct the theater and put it to use. Today, the church lies dilapidated, as Achilleas Chatziconstantinou, a Greek geographer and researcher of the historical topography of Izmir, says. The external porch is completely missing and there is a huge hole on the western side where the main entrance was. The interior of Profitis Ilias has been ransacked. Because of its size and the fact that it was built far from the town, some describe it as a monastery, but the absence of other structures suggests otherwise. There are many postcards from the pre-1922 era that show the church in an idyllic location among tall trees, the river and the aqueducts. In fact, it was a popular countryside destination for the inhabitants of Smyrna. In his books, Christos Solomonides also names the last priests who served there in 1922: Aristarchos and Agathaggelos.

In what follows I will point to another strand of interpretation, which is much less explored in scholarship and somewhat muted in Church preaching. According to St. Irenaeus of Lyon, Tertullian, St. Anastasius the Sinaite, and the Byzantine hymnographic tradition, the Transfiguration account set forth in the Gospel of Matthew is not only a “vision” (Matthew 17:9) that the disciples have of Christ, but, so to speak, a vision of a vision: a vision granted to Moses and Elijah, witnessed by the disciples. This interpretation is ancient, going back to at least the second century; moreover, as its hymnographic and iconographic reception attests, this interpretation enjoyed unsurpassed popularity during the first Christian millennium. The Vision on Tabor and the Vision on Sinai Moses with the Lord on Sinai, receiving the Law. Winchester Bible folio 5r, 12th century; Photo by Dr.John Crook, Winchester The connection between Tabor and Sinai is first and foremost suggested by the very readings assigned for the Vespers of the Transfiguration. To understand Christ’s appearance on Tabor, we read from Exodus 24 (the appearance of the Lord to the seventy elders on Sinai), Exodus 33 (of which more presently), and 3 Kingdoms/1 Kings 19 (Prophet Elijah’s vision on the Mountain of the Law). In Exodus 33, in response to Moses’ request to see the divine glory more intimately, God states that He will indeed manifest Himself to his prophet by parading in his glory, by proclaiming the divine name, and by showing Moses His back parts. But God insists on the impossibility of a more complete revelation: “You shall not be able to see my Face, for no man shall see my Face and live …. You shall see my hind parts; but my Face will not appear to you (Exodus 33:20, 23). Some early Christians interpreted this to mean that the vision face to face, refused to Moses, was being postponed for a later time. The great theologian of the second century, for instance, St. Irenaeus of Lyon, writes in his treatise Against Heresies 4.20.9:

Members of the Patriarchal delegation were also presented with high church awards. Then Patriarch Kirill had a talk with Archbishop Hieronymus and members of the Greek Church’s Holy Synod. Later that day, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill met with Greece’s President K. Papoulias and Prime Minister. A. Samaras. From Athens Patriarch Kirill went to Thessaloniki. In the evening, Metropolitan Anthimos of Thessaloniki gave a reception in honour of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. The next day, after venerating shrines in Thessaloniki, Patriarch Kirill went by water to Holy Mount Athos. Upon his arrival there, he went to Karyes, the administrative center of Mount Athos, for a thanksgiving in the Cathedral of Protaton. He also met with the members of the Epistasia of Holy Mount Athos. In the Russian Monastery of St. Panteleimon, Patriarch Kirill venerated its shrines and inspected the monastery buildings restored after a fire. He also said a prayer for the dead brethren of the monastery and visited the place where St. Silouan of Athos performed his feats. On June 5, Patriarch Kirill celebrated the liturgy at the Monastery of St. Panteleimon. During his pilgrimage to Athos, Patriarch Kirill visited the Great Laura of St. Athanasius of Athos, monasteries Iveron and Pantocrator, the hermitage of the Prophet Elijah founded by St. Paisius Velichkovsky, monasteries Zograf, Hilandar, Vatopedi, Xilourgou Skete, and the Hermitage of St. Andrew, and inspected the restoration work at the Old Roussik monastery.
