“Sensationalism, headlines, and an obsession with the end of times, with the apocalypse—these are the topics that captivate the heart of man today,” says Priest Andre Paez of Saint John the Evangelist Mission here. “We live in a time of fear, in which people suffer from stress, depression and anxiety due to the fear of an unknown future, volatile economic markets, political turmoil, global wars, terrorism, and more. We are faced and surrounded with a seemingly ever increasing darkness. Yet, in the midst of this darkness and shadow of death, there is hope, as Jesus Christ has been victoriously shining forth since the day of His glorious resurrection.” It is precisely this hope that Father Andre and the faithful of Saint John’s, one of the Orthodox Church in America’s five fledgling missions currently receiving Planting Grants through the Department of Evangelization, are attempting to proclaim and share. Saint John’s was planted in February 2005 to bring Orthodox Christianity to Tempe, home to one of the largest state universities in the US. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the community today has grown to embrace some 80 faithful and a steady stream of enquirers from a variety of backgrounds, religious and ethnic. About half of the faithful are converts to the faith. The parish strives to maintain a multi-generational, “kid-friendly,” and welcoming atmosphere that fosters fellowship, while it promotes discipleship by encouraging the faithful to recognize—and use—their spiritual gifts for “the building up of the Body of Christ.” “Above all, we strive to manifest the love of God in ourselves, first to our family members, then to our friends, co-workers, and neighbors, to transform lives by being a holy place where people can experience the forgiveness and love of God through the services and sacraments, educational classes, and community outreach ministries,” Father Andre adds. “As we anticipate celebrating our patronal feast on September 26, we are reminded that Saint John uses the Greek term apokalypsis in his book of Revelation not to refer to the destruction of the world, but rather to the manifestation of Christ Himself. The apokalypsis truly is now, as our Lord reveals in John 16:33 when He says, ‘These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.’” 18 сентября 2015 г.

Archive Metropolitan Timotheos of Bostra: Hierarchs, clergy, monastics, seminarians and ordinary faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church subjected to ruthless persecutions 5 May 2023 year 11:04 In the Paschal message of greeting addressed to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, Metropolitan Timotheos of Bostra, Exarch of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem in Cyprus, writes in particular about the tragic situation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church enduring persecutions today. “The Church of Christ, going through various persecutions and severe trials, has not for a minute ceased to believe that the glorious Resurrection of our Saviour Jesus Christ is the obvious highest degree of the invariable God’s mercy for the fallen human and the crown of His redemptive sacrifice for the sake of the world’s life and salvation. And we draw hope, patience and power from this soul-saving event”, the hierarch stated stressing, “the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, too, is going through similar trials, and we see with indignation that our brothers - hierarchs, clergy, monks, seminarians and ordinary believers - are subjected to ruthless persecutions by Orthodox “brothers” and “compatriots”. According to him, the persecutors have made use of the military conflict “in order to punish “as traitors” all those who remain faithful and committed to their Mother Church in whose bosom they, just as their ancestors, were baptized and raised in the spiritual teaching of her admonitions, prayers and ascetic works”. “Despite the fact that all these actions arise in our souls deep sorrow and pain, the call of the Risen Lord, But take heart! I have overcome the world, continues to give inspiration and consolation to the plenitude of the Church”, Metropolitan Timotheos reminded, “And so in the end we have the hope that He Who has trampled down the devil, Who has abolished his kingdom and has Risen in glory from the dead, our God Christ will give consolation to those who grieve and suffer, bring to repentance those who threaten the salvific path of His Church and strengthen those who are enduring manifold and severe trials”. Therefore let us open our eyes while there is still time. Let us firmly believe that the final victory will not belong to the devil and his angels, but to our King and Leader Christ. So let us hasten to take up the victory-bearing weapon blessed by our King for battle—Great Lent; a weapon that is for us bright and glorious, and for our adversary terrible and fatal. Let us abstain from gluttony and drunkenness, that they might not burden our hearts (cf. Lk. 21:34) and not bury them in corruption and darkness. Let us abstain from gathering up earthly treasures, that through them satan cannot separate us from Christ and force us to surrender. And when we fast, let us fast not for the sake of human praise, but for the sake of our soul’s salvation and to the glory of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Whom with the Father and the Holy Spirit the angels and saints in heaven and the righteous on earth sing hymns of praise—to the Trinity One in Essence and Indivisible, now and ever, and to all ages, and unto the ages of ages. Archive Statement by the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad on the appointment of exarchs of the Constantinople Patriarchate to Kiev 10 September 2018 year 12:30 The Synod of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad made a statement concerning the appointment of exarchs of the Constantinople Patriarchate to Kiev. Standing before God in prayerful solidarity with our long-suffering brethren of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, headed by His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry of Kiev and All Ukraine, who, being revered and respected throughout the whole of the Orthodox world, is primate of the only recognised canonical Orthodox Church of Christ in Ukraine, we, the members of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, which carries out its ministry in the lands of North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and other nations of the West, ministering to numerous emigres from the lands of historic Russia and their descendants, express our profound indignation at the blatant violation of the Holy Canons by the Orthodox Church of Constantinople. The decision of its hierarchy to send its ‘exarchs’ into the canonical territory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, without the agreement and permission of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry of Kiev and All Ukraine, is a gross and unprecedented incursion by one Local Church into a distant canonical territory, which has its own Local Church that is alone responsible for the Orthodox flock of that country. This action, taken by His Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew and his fellow archpastors, threatens the unity of Holy Orthodoxy. In light of these developments, we call upon the clergy and flock of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, together with the other Local Orthodox Churches, to redouble their holy and ardent prayers for peace in Ukraine, and unfailingly to oppose the evil presently befalling our persecuted brothers and sisters, the children of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. May the Great and Supreme Head of the Church, the Good Shepherd Jesus Christ, grant strength to His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry and to the Episcopacy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which all those who have departed should repentantly and in appropriate manner approach for canonical reception into the Orthodox Church; and may the Lord grant His Beatitude, together with his clergy and flock, long-suffering patience, a multitude of His mercies, blessings, and consolation in the tribulation that now befalls the faithful of Christ in the land of Ukraine. Amen. Календарь ← 7 April 2024 year

St. Flavian the Confessor the Patriarch of Constantinople Commemorated on February 18 Photo: Days.Pravoslavie.Ru Saint Flavian the Confessor, Patriarch of Constantinople, occupied the patriarchal throne of Constantinople under the holy Emperor Theodosius the Younger (408-450) and his sister the holy Empress Pulcheria (September 10). At first he was a presbyter and caretaker of church-vessels in the cathedral. He became Patriarch after the death of holy Patriarch Proclus (November 20). During this time, various disturbances and heresies threatened church unity. In the year 448, Saint Flavian convened a local Council at Constantinople to examine the heresy of Eutyches, which admitted only one nature (the divine) in the Lord Jesus Christ. Persisting in his error, the heretic Eutyches was excommunicated from the Church and deprived of dignity, but Eutyches had a powerful patron in the person of Chrysathios, a eunuch close to the emperor. Through intrigue Chrysathios brought Bishop Dioscorus of Alexandria over to the side of Eutyches, and obtained permission from the emperor to convene a church council at Ephesus, afterwards known as the “Robber Council.” Dioscorus presided at this council, gaining the acquittal of Eutyches and the condemnation of Patriarch Flavian by threats and force. Saint Flavian was fiercely beaten up during the sessions of this council by impudent monks led by a certain Barsumas. Even the impious president of the Robber Council, the heretic Dioscorus, took part in these beatings. After this heavy chains were put upon Saint Flavian, and he was sentenced to banishment at Ephesus. The Lord, however, ended his further suffering, by sending him his death (+ August 449). The holy Empress Pulcheria withdrew from the imperial court. Soon the intrigues of Chrysathios were revealed. The emperor dismissed him, and restored his sister Saint Pulcheria. Through her efforts, the relics of holy Patriarch Flavian were reverently transferred from Ephesus to Constantinople. Разделы портала «Азбука веры» Православные молитвы Song 1. Tone 6 Eirmos: When Israel walked on foot in the sea as on dry land, on seeing their pursuer Pharaoh drowned, they cried: Let us sing to God a song of victory. Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me. Troparia: Now I, a burdened sinner, approach Thee, my Lord and God. But I dare not raise my eyes to Heaven. I only pray, saying: Give me, O Lord, the sense to weep bitterly over my deeds. Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me. O woe is me, a sinner! Wretched am I above all men. There is no penitence in me. Give me, O Lord, tears to weep bitterly over my deeds. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: Foolish, wretched man, you are wasting your time in idleness! Think of your life and turn to the Lord God, and weep bitterly over your deeds. Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Theotokion: Most pure Mother of God, look upon me, a sinner, and deliver me from the snares of the devil, and guide me to the way of repentance, that I may weep bitterly over my deeds. Song 3 Eirmos: There is none holy as Thou, O Lord my God, Who hast exalted the power of Thy faithful, O Good One, and strengthened us on the rock of Thy confession. Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me. Troparia: When the thrones are set at the dread judgment, then the deeds of all men will be exposed. Then alas for the sinners sent to torment! And knowing that, my soul, repent of your evil deeds. Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me. The righteous will rejoice, but the sinners will weep. Then no one will be able to help us, but our deeds will condemn us. Therefore, before the end dawns, repent of your evil deeds. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: Woe is me, a great sinner, who have defiled myself by my deeds and thoughts. Not a tear-drop do I have, because of my hard-heartedness. Now raise yourself from the earth, my soul, and repent of your evil deeds. Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

His Holiness Patriarch Kirill’s Condolences Over Mass Killing Of Christians In Libya His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia sent condolences to the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and His Holiness Patriarch Tawadros II over the murder of over twenty Coptic Christians in Libya.      His Excellency Mr. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi President Arab Republic of Egypt Your Excellency, dear Mr. President, Please, accept my deep condolences over the atrocious murder of Coptic Christians, Egyptian citizens, in Libya. The crime committed by extremists deserves everyone’s condemnation. Radicals’ attempts to justify violence by religious motives provoke utter rejection. Following the path of terror, these devil’s servants try to disrupt the balance, maintained for centuries, of good neighborly relations between Christians and Muslims in the Middle East. I am convinced that the tragedy that has befallen the Egyptian people will leave nobody indifferent. A priority task of the whole world community today is to combine the efforts to oppose the inhuman ideology and give a resolute rebuff to this evil. Terrorism has no future, because people will never put up with violence, no matter what slogans it might use as a cover. I offer my condolences to the relatives and friends of those killed, I prayerfully empathize with all Egyptian people and wish them fortitude and spiritual strength in opposing extremism and terrorism. With respect and condolences, +KIRILL PATRIARCH OF MOSCOW AND ALL RUSSIA His Holiness Theodoros II Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St Mark in All Africa and the Middle East Your Holiness, With deep pain in my heart I have learnt about the terrible murder of over twenty Christians of your flock in Libya. No goal can justify this horrible crime. Using religious rhetoric as a cover, extremists commit atrocities unprecedented in their cruelty, seeking to sow panic in people’s hearts and to bring a split into the good relations between Christians and Muslims, which prevailed in the Middle East for centuries. It is my conviction that it is especially important today for the whole world community to unite and undertake most resolute actions to oppose extremism and terrorism. We as Christians should together bear witness to the Risen Lord Jesus Who has conquered evil and death. Then futile will be all attempts of those who serve the devil using the holy name of God to justify their criminal actions. In this grave hour, I stand in prayer with the Egyptian people. My sincere condolences go to your Holiness, the clergy and flock of the Coptic Church, and the relatives and love ones of those who were killed. May the Lord give rest to the souls of the deceased in the dwellings of the righteous. With love in Christ, + KIRILL PATRIARCH OF MOSCOW AND ALL RUSSIA 20 февраля 2015 г.
