| Archive Metropolitan Hilarion celebrated Divine Liturgy at the church of the Elevation of the Cross in Geneva 3 June 2019 year 11:12 On June 2, 2019, the 6 th Sunday after Pascha, the Blind Man, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate department for external church relations (DECR), celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the church of the Elevation of the Cross in Geneva, Switzerland, the cathedral church of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia diocese of Western Europe. His Eminence was assisted by Bishop Alexander of Vevey, vicar of the diocese Western Europe; Archpriest Pavel Tsvetkov, the church’s ecclesiarch; Archpriest Peter Perekrestov, ecclesiarch of the Cathedral of our Lady the Joy for All the Afflicted in San Francisco; and Hieromonk Ioann (Kopeikin), pro-rector for development, Ss Cyril and Methodius Institute of Post-Graduate Studies (CMI). In the church, there was a shrine with a part of the relics and belt of St. John, Archbishop of Shanghai the Wonderworker of San-Francisco. The shrine had been brought to Swiss parishes with a blessing of Archbishop Kirill of San Francisco and Western America and Bishop Irenaeus of Richmond and Western Europe, on the occasion of the 25 th anniversary of the glorification of the saint. After the Prayer of Fervent Supplication, Metropolitan Hilarion lifted up a prayer for peace in Ukraine. In his sermon after the service, His Eminence Hilarion conveyed to the congregation a blessing from His Holiness Kirill, Patriarchate of Moscow and All Russia. Then he spoke about the Gospel’s story about the healing of a man born blind, stressing that the Lord healed the blind man not only physically but also spiritually, bringing him to faith in Christ not just as man but as God Incarnate. “Every Gospel’s story speaks of Jesus Christ as God”, His Eminence said, “And He continues to live in our midst, with us and in us, for when we partake of the Holy Communion, the Lord Jesus Christ comes to dwell in us entering into our human essence”. Speaking about the difference between Christianity and other religions, he said that the difference between the life of a Christian and that of a non-believer is the same as the life of a blind one and a sighted one. “Externally, everything in our life as Christians seems to be similar to the life of other people, but inwardly our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ makes us aware of the meaning of our life and all that happens in it”. His Eminence concluded his sermon with the traditional exclamation “Christ is Risen!” Then Bishop Alexander of Vevey greeted Metropolitan Hilarion and presented him with an Icon of All Saints in memory of the common prayer and a leaflet about the restoration of the church of the Elevation of the Cross. | Protomartyr and Archdeacon Stephen Commemorated on December 27 The Holy Protomartyr and Archdeacon Stephen was the eldest of the seven deacons, appointed by the Apostles themselves, and therefore he is called “archdeacon.” He was the first Christian martyr, and he suffered for Christ when he was about thirty. In the words of Asterias, he was “the starting point of the martyrs, the instructor of suffering for Christ, the foundation of righteous confession, since Stephen was the first to shed his blood for the Gospel.” Filled with the Holy Spirit, Saint Stephen preached Christianity and defeated Jewish teachers of the Law in debate. The Jews maligned Saint Stephen, saying that he had uttered blasphemy against God and against Moses. Saint Stephen came before the Sanhedrin and the High Priest to answer these charges. He gave a fiery speech, in which he recounted the history of the Jewish nation, and denounced the Jews for persecuting the prophets, and also for executing the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ (Acts ch. 7). During his speech, Saint Stephen suddenly saw the heavens opened and Jesus Christ standing at the right hand of God. The Jews shouted and covered their ears, and rushed at him. They dragged him out of the city and stoned him, but the holy martyr prayed for his murderers. Far off on the heights stood the Mother of God with the holy Apostle John the Theologian, and She prayed fervently for the martyr. Before his death Saint Stephen said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. O Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.” Then he joyfully gave up his pure soul to Christ. The body of the holy Protomartyr Stephen, left to be eaten by beasts, was secretly taken up by the Jewish teacher Gamaliel and his son Habib, who buried Stephen on his estate. They both believed in Christ, and later received holy Baptism. Saint Stephen is also commemorated on August 2 (Translation of his relics) and on September 15 (Uncovering of his relics in the year 415). | Archive On the Day of the Nativity of Christ, Patriarch Kirill celebrated Great Compline at the Church of Christ the Saviour 7 January 2018 year 21:28 In the evening of January 7, the Day of the Nativity of Our Lord God and Saviour Jesus Christ, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia celebrated Great Compline at the Cathedral Church of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. His Holiness was assisted by a great assembly of bishops and clergy. Among them were representatives of Local Orthodox Churches to the Patriarchal See of Moscow from the Orthodox Churches of Alexandria, Antioch, Serbia, Jerusalem, Bulgaria and the Czech Lends and Slovakia. Among the numerous worshippers were mothers superior of Patriarchal convents, Moscow clergy, members of parish councils of Moscow churches, and staff members of synodal departments. The service was broadcast live by the TV Center and Soyuz TV channels. Patriarch Kirill read the beginning of the Gospel from the old altar-Gospel of the time of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, which is brought out of the Church of Christ the Savour’s altar twice a year: during the Christmas and Easter Great Compline. After the service, Metropolitan Juvenaly of Krutitsy and Kolomna extended greetings to His Holiness on behalf of the plenitude of the Russian Orthodox Church. He spoke about new Christian martyrs who spilt blood in the last century of the Russian Orthodox Church, ‘And we can see that the Christian blood and prayers of new martyrs have proved to be capable of restoring the Russian Orthodox Church to her former magnificence’. He also praised Patriarch Kirill for his missionary efforts, saying, ‘We see the fruit of your missionary work in the Russian land, because since you became the Primate of the Russian land you have tirelessly repeated that our love, education and mission work should be addressed in the first place to the youth. May the Lord bless your Primatial ministry with many good years for the sake of the prosperity of the Russian Orthodox Church and our beloved Motherland’. Maria Antipova, student of Moscow State University, and Mikhail Kotelnikov, chief conductor of the Youth Synodal Choir, brought greetings to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill on behalf of the Orthodox youth in Moscow. | Therefore, if earthly kingdoms and civil societies in general wish to attain and establish the peace brought to earth by the King of righteousness, peace, and love—our Lord Jesus Christ, then they should be closely united with the kingdom of the Lord, or His holy Church on earth; they should submit themselves to the commandments of Jesus Christ and the rules of His Church. Should these commandments be broken, they should quickly straighten themselves out, after a sincere admission of their mistakes and iniquity. Members of a state that confesses the Christian faith should be kind, honest, and sincerely dedicated members of the Church. Disruption of this union between the Church and state, that is, its citizens, neglect of faith, the commandments, and the Gospels give birth to unbelief and all social disorder and vice, cause moral or political impotence in that society, and deprive it of the blessing of heaven. Russia as a great nation was always closely tied with the Church; and only within this union was it able to grow, strengthen, and ascend to the heights of its might and glory. May God grant that this union of the state and the Church—this kingdom of peace—always continue! Then Russia will be a kingdom of peace, and God " s blessing will be upon it. Then no sedition will be frightening, because it will not find a place to settle in. May our Lord Christ reign in our hearts, and may peace and blessing reign with Him! Amen. This monastery is under the Moscow Patriarchate. Thus, it is monitored by monks and clergy of Sretensky Monastery, who are answerable to the the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. | Patriarch Kirill: the Lord visited Fr. Kirill with illness, which he bore with humility and meekness Moscow, February 22, 2017 Photo: Pravmir.ru “In the last years of his life the Lord visited Fr. Kirill with an illness, which he bore with humility and meekness, showing an example of fortitude of spirit, patience, and wholehearted hope in God,” in the words of Patriarch Kirill. His Holiness expressed his condolences to the deputy abbot of the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra, Archbishop Feognost of Sergiev Posad, the monastery brotherhood, and all the family and friends of the newly-departed Archimandrite Kirill (Pavlov), who served many years as the confessor of the monastery. The letter has been published on the site of the Moscow Patriarchate. Fr. Kirill died on Monday evening, February 20, at ninety-eight years of age. His funeral will be celebrated tomorrow, February 23, in the Dormition Cathedral at the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra by Patriarch Kirill. The primate offered his sincere condolences in the letter for the repose of the “well-known and revered elder in the Orthodox world.” He recounted Fr. Kirill’s life, growing up in the Ryazan region, and coming to faith after finding a Gospel book after the brutal WW2 Battle of Stalingrad, which opened his eyes to the reality of God. Fr. Kirill studied at the Moscow Theological Seminary and then the Theological Academy, and became a monk in 1954 at the lavra, where the remainder of his life was centered. “Goodwill, and the ability to empathize and rejoice with others attracted many to Archimandrite Kirill, and he, justifying their trust, attended to their sorrows, aspirations, and hopes with unwavering attention,” the letter reads. Patriarch Kirill recounts how he gained the respect of his contemporaries through his years of service to God and the Church, diligently celebrating the Divine services, and lovingly and modestly always attending to his spiritual children. “In the last years of his life the Lord visited Fr. Kirill with an illness, which he bore with humility and meekness, showing an example of fortitude of spirit, patience, and wholehearted hope in God. | Metropolitan Hilarion celebrates the Day of All Saints at Moscow Representation of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria Moscow, June 8, 2015 On June 7, 2015, the Day of All Saints, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate department for external church relations (DECR), led the parishioners of the church of All Saint-at-Kulishki, the Moscow Representation of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria, in celebrating the Divine Liturgy. The liturgy was celebrated in Greek and Church Slavonic. After the liturgy the DECR chairman was greeted by Metropolitan Athanasios of Kyrenia, rector of the Representation, who said in particular, ‘The fact that you have accepted our invitation and our common celebration of the great Sacrament do not just point out the good relations between the Patriarchates of Alexandria and Moscow but, more important, make it visible that the holy Churches of God are bound up by inseparable unity, comprising One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church’. In his response, Metropolitan Hilarion spoke about the Day of All Saints as a feast commemorating hundreds of thousands of people who, following Christ, took the path of sanctity. The Lord Jesus Christ, he said, came out against the understanding of sanctity as one’s isolation from society and the need to observe a whole bulk of prescriptions and statutes. The Lord told very simple things to people: ‘the kingdom of God is within you’, and the spiritual struggle for sanctity is waged within a person. Speaking about martyrs and confessors who followed Christ on the way to sanctity in times of persecution against the Church, Metropolitan Hilarion pointed to the fact that the Church has again become persecuted today in the Middle East, where Christianity was born and in North Africa, where Christians have become a persecuted minority. ‘We pray every day that the Lord may give us peaceful times. We pray for all Local Orthodox Churches and especially for such old Patriarchates as that of Alexandria founded by St. Mark, asking the Lord that He may preserve and multiply Christian faith in the countries in which it is subjected to oppression and persecution today’. Addressing Metropolitan Athanasios, His Eminence Hilarion thanked him for the opportunity to celebrate together and to pray for His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodore, saying, ‘ We know and love him. He used to serve in Odessa as representative of the Patriarch of Alexandria to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. He has covered a long and difficult path and founded a great number of church communities in various African countries… I rejoice in the fact that the spiritual ties between our two Churches are developing and strengthening today including through your efforts’. 8 июня 2015 г. | Archive Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk speaks at global Christian youth forum in Manila 10 August 2019 year 11:23 On 8th – 10th August 2019, the Jesus Global Youth Day took place at the Mall of Asia Arena in the city of Manila, the Philippines, bringing together over thirty thousand participants from more than 100 countries. With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, attended the forum. On 9th August, Metropolitan Hilarion addressed the audience of 30 thousand young people, speaking about the importance of the personality of the Lord Jesus Christ in the life of a Christian. The DECR chairman also told the young people from various continents who gathered together in Manila about the Orthodox faith, the Russian Orthodox Church and its history in the 20th century, making a special emphasis on the revival of church life in the recent thirty years. “Such upturn in religious life in the territory of the former atheistic empire cannot be caused by natural or socio-political factors alone, but clearly is of supernatural character. This revival does not spring from our human efforts. Its main reason is the personality of our Lord Jesus Christ – God Incarnate and Saviour of the world,” the DECR chairman said. Among those present at the meeting were Mr. Teodoro Locsin, Foreign Affairs Secretary of the Philippines; Mr. Igor Khovayev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of the Philippines; Metropolitan Sergy of Singapore and Southeast Asia, Patriarchal Exarch of Southeast Asia; Metropolitan Pavel of Khanty-Mansiysk and Surgut, acting administrator of the diocese of the Philippines and Vietnam; Mr. K.
