Kimzha: Outpost of tradition in the Russian north Hodegitria Church, Kizhma The village of Kimzha in Arkhangelsk Region, is one of the most significant surviving traditional settlements in the Russian north. Kimzha is situated close to the Arctic Circle, near the point where the small Kimzha River flows into the Mezen, one of many waterways that drain northern Russia. The mouth of the Mezen River is flanked by two towns, Kamenka and Mezen, both about 5,000 in population. Mezen is the regional administrative center, Kamenka has the region " s largest employer, a lumber factory. The population of Kimzha varies between winter and summer: a couple of hundred in the winter, with a hundred or so more at various times in the summer, when relatives return to visit parents and grandparents. Its primary landmark is a church, dedicated in 1763 to the Hodigitria Icon of Mary. For much of the year, Kimzha lies buried under severe winter conditions, stiff wind and treacherous snow drifts. At one time, there was limited scheduled transportation by water from Arkhangelsk, but that ceased to exist long ago. Today year-round transportation option by small plane is available from Arkhangelsk’s Vaskovo airport to Mezen, and from there by car (and boat) to Kimzha. During the winter there is a temporary road, or zimnik, but this is an exhausting, nerve-wracking route, whose usefulness has been curtailed in recent years by the ever earlier spring thaws. An year-round dirt road is nearing completion and will, in theory, open the way to Arkhangelsk. The place has a certain magic perhaps best represented by the aquamarine shimmer of the aurora borealis that can be seen from here. And the village itself makes an extraordinary impression, with its massive log houses built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although some houses have been abandoned or shuttered for the winter, and others have been modified with plank siding, this is not an open-air museum with a few reconstructed log buildings. The cross had been pulled out, removed and thrown away,” Pogorelov, a researcher at the regional center for the protection of historical and cultural heritage, told Interfax on Monday. “It is an outrageous act of hooliganism, or a provocation,” the archaeologist said. After the royal family was executed at Ipatyev House in Yekaterinburg in 1918, the bodies were moved to an abandoned mine, Ganina Yama, not far from the city and thrown into a well. The well was not deep enough to hide the bodies, so they were lifted to be moved to another place. As the convoy was moving it got stuck in a marshy area, called Porosyonkov Log, where the Bolsheviks dug a pit, and dumped the bodies into it after pouring sulfuric acid onto them. Nine of the 12 bodies were buried in the same place, and the two others, those of Crown Prince Alexey and his sister Maria, were buried separately in a forest. The first remains were discovered back in 1978, but excavation work had not been done until 1991. Alexey’s and Maria’s remains were found much later, in 2007. All bones were put through numerous laboratory tests, historical, archaeological and archive studies have been conducted, and anthropologists, dentists and genetics scientists examined them, which led to the conclusion that the remains found were those of members of the royal family.

For centuries the monastery consisted of log structures. Work began in 1750 on a new main church dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin, yet the monastery continued on the brink of destitution, exacerbated in 1764 by Catherine the Great " s secularization of monastery holdings. By the end of the 18th century, however, the monastery and its attractive location gained the attention of a Church hierarch, Platon, the Metropolitan of Moscow and Kaluga. His support led to a revival, including the construction in 1802-1806 of a large bell tower and flanking cloisters. Throughout the 19th century there followed other churches, chapels and monastery buildings, including a large refectory with imposing murals and ceiling paintings that have survived.    Of special significance was the monastery " s hermitage, or skete (retreat), devoted to a more strict form of spiritual observance. Dedicated to John the Baptist, the skete at Optina Pustyn was established in 1821 at its own compound a short distance to the east of the main monastery walls. The center of the skete remains the Church of the Nativity John the Baptist, built in 1822. Surfaced with red plank siding, the attractive wooden structure is accented with a white neoclassical portico. Other buildings at the skete include small residences and a library housed in a graceful structure that served as a museum during the late Soviet period. During the 19th century the hermitage became widely known for its sages who achieved the designation starets, or " elder " . Although the concept of starchestvo was brought to the monastery by the Church hierarchy in the 1820s, the starets designation came primarily through popular respect for certain monks who led an ascetic existence at the hermitage and in whom charisma merged with deep spiritual wisdom. The Church venerates all 14 monks known as " starets " at Optina Pustyn. The Optina Pustyn Monastery attracted all levels of society, including Russia " s intellectual and artistic elite. Nikolai Gogol, Ivan Turgenev, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, the brothers Ivan and Konstantin Aksakov, Konstantin Leontiev – these are but a few of the major artists and thinkers who visited Optina Pustyn. But the monastery is best known for its encounters with Fedor Dostoevsky and Leo Tolstoy – encounters that in each case involved a severe personal crisis.

Putin Urges Tighter Control over Totalitarian Sects Russian President Vladimir Putin called for tightening control over the activity of totalitarian sects. Totalitarian sects “constitute a threat to society, to individuals – it’s a hunt not only for people’s souls, but also for their property,” Putin said at a meeting with Samara region governor Nikolay Merkushkin and representatives of public organizations. Putin agreed that “regional and federal government bodies should consider how to improve the legislative base for work on that front and ensure its practical implementation”. “We will do it by all means,” he promised. The issue was brought up by Yelena Belchikova of the Samara Regional Institute for Professional Retraining. She said that a more effective struggle against totalitarian sects was needed and proposed creating a database containing brief information about such organizations for regional education authorities and schools. On Tuesday, February 3, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. EST, the Archdiocese of Western Pennsylvania will present a free webinar devoted to helping parishes understand the positive impact of college ministry on both the parish and students. “Few actions can ‘heat up a lukewarm parish’ better than reaching out to college students to help them find a worship ‘home away from home.’” said Joseph Kormos, Archdiocesan Parish Development Ministry leader.  “The webinar, one of the ongoing ‘Building Vibrant Parishes’ series, will feature a panel of youth leader experts.  It is specially geared to parish outreach ministry leaders, council members, and clergy.” Topics to be explored include stories of the positive impact of college ministry on parish life, examples of the formative impact on students and tips for finding, connecting and communicating with college students.
