Baptism, Chrismation, and the Eucharist (q.v.) are all administered together as Holy Mysteries (sacraments) that admit one into the membership of the Church, i.e., are rites of Christian initiation. Baptism is preceded by repentance and catechesis (qq.v.) in the case of adults, and assumes a continuous membership in a Christian community. Baptism of children occurs only in cases wherein the children are reared and taught in a Christian home and community, whether by parents or others. Baptism is not construed so much as a cleansing from “original sin” (q.v.), though it is for cleansing of sins as Paul teaches, but more especially as baptism into the death and resurrection of Christ. When the repentant sinner is immersed in the baptismal waters, he or she descends to death with Christ. When coming up out of the waters, the newborn Christian is resurrected with Christ, all in the name of the Holy Trinity (q.v.) ( Mt 28:19 ). Rudimentary instructions on the administration of Baptism are found in the Didache VII (q.v.). With regard to the Baptism of adults in the Church today, the following items are normative from Holy Tradition (q.v.): 1) After evangelism, reception into the catechumenate and the assigning of sponsors occurs and is followed by catechesis; 2) The inscription of names or naming service begins a series of exorcisms (q.v.) and a forty-day lenten preparation; and 3) The liturgical rites of Baptism, Chrismation (the Kiss of Peace), and the Eucharist (qq.v.) proceed to a postbaptismal catechesis and a deepened experience of life in the Church. In Acts the word is used of the apostles (q.v.) as witnesses of Christ’s ministry and Resurrection. Soon afterward, with the spread of persecution of Christians, the martyr became identified as one who bears testimony to Christ’s victory over death through the sacrifice of his or her own life. In the letters of Ignatius of Antioch (q.v.), particularly his “Epistle to the Romans,” one finds a certain identification of the martyr’s sufferings with the passion of Jesus Christ in imagery, which further recalls that of the Eucharist (q.v.). The martyrdom of one of Ignatius’s correspondents, Polycarp of Smyrna (q.v.), became the paradigmatic account of a martyr’s death and model for the many that would follow. This document, too, makes heavy use of imagery from the Gospel accounts of the Passion, and Polycarp’s prayer before his death bears striking resemblance to the eucharistic anaphora. Polycarp’s “Life” also provides the first witness to the cult of the martyr. The saint’s community gathers yearly on the anniversary of his “birthday” (i.e., into the Kingdom of Heaven) around the place where his relics are interred. Martyrs became the earliest heroes of the Church, to be followed on the cessation of state persecution with the conversion of Constantine, by the “bloodless martyrdom” of monasticism (qq.v.). Traditionally, martyrdom for the faith is automatic grounds for inclusion in the diptychs, recognition of saintliness-without any formal canonization process. The 20th c., especially in Soviet Russia, has given ample evidence that martyrdom is not an obsolete possibility. The Greeks, together with other Orthodox nations of the Balkans (qq.v.), have their “new martyrs” of the Turkish era. Remembering Shahbaz Bhatti: ‘He inspired minorities to peacefully take back their rights’ Islamabad, March 7, 2012 A candle light vigil held for Shahbaz Bhatti. I believe in Jesus Christ, who gave his own life for us and I am ready to die for a cause. I’m living for my community and I will die to defend their rights. These were the words of late Shahbaz Bhatti that echoed with 3,000-plus members of the minority communities and other supporters, who came en masse from around the country to mark his first death anniversary. They had gathered at the Jinnah Convention Centre on Tuesday for a vigil that was organised by the All Pakistan Minority Alliance (APMA). Remembering the former minorities’ minister who was shot dead in sector I-8 last year, APMA Sargodha Youth Coordinator Farrukh Tanveer Chaudry called him a “revolutionary, who at a time when Pakistanis thought their actions can’t bring any change gave everyone hope”. Chaudhry added, “He proved by example that conviction is a powerful tool for revolution.” Reverend Captain Munawar from Lahore noted that Christians have always been treated as second-class citizens, even though they have worked hard and tried their best towards achieving success for Pakistan. He said, “Christians fought in both wars between India and Pakistan, were active in opening the first colleges (FC College Lahore and Gordon College Rawalpindi), have been long associated with healthcare, and literally clean the streets of Pakistan.” Munawar further said that a Christian has never been found to be associated with terrorist acts in the country, but they still remain disempowered and on the fringe of society. Participants showed approval that Shahbaz’s brother Paul has taken over as chairman and is fulfilling the void left by Shahbaz’s untimely death. Paul Bhatti said, “With Shahbaz’s death, the community felt abandoned and rudderless. We have tried to pick up from where he left off to continue his mission.” He added, “At the beginning, I did not think I could succeed him and was very concerned, but now the concerns are fading away and I am increasingly aware of the importance of this duty.” While talking about the ceremony, Ruby Naeem John told The Express Tribune, “I have never attended such a demonstration before and I think the speakers are very right in demanding that we move out of our comfort zone and peacefully elect leaders who can communicate our needs.” John, a teacher at St Mary’s Academy in Lalazaar, spoke on the importance of education for empowerment especially if the youth are to become the leaders of tomorrow. Fittingly, one of the Shabaz Bhatti Foundation’s main objectives is to fight poverty by promoting education and contributing to interfaith dialogue. John Anthony McGuckin Dormition JOHN A. MCGUCKIN The term refers to the “Falling Asleep” (death) of the Mother of God. Icons of the Dormition are traditionally placed over the western interior wall of Orthodox churches, so that they are the last thing believers see as they leave. A superlative example is the mosaic panel still surviving in the Savior in Chora Church in Constantinople. They are a didactic icon about the death of the elect believer. Christ, in glory, attends the bier of the Virgin and catches up her soul (depicted as a little child in swaddling clothes) while the attending apostles and ancient fathers (such as James of Jerusalem and Dionysius the Areopagite) surround her, grieving. After receiving her soul, Orthodox tradition states that three days later the Lord resurrected her body in antic­ipation of the End Day, and took it also into heaven. The Feast of the Dormition is one of the solemn festivals of the liturgical year, and observed in the Orthodox world on August 15 with a two-week fasting period preceding it. Saint Simeon also learned about the death of Usphazanes, and he gave thanks to the Lord. When they brought him before the emperor a second time, Saint Simeon again refused to worship the pagan gods and confessed his faith in Christ. The enraged emperor gave orders to behead all the Christians in the prison before the saint’s eyes. Without fear the Christians went to execution, blessed by the holy hierarch, and they bent their heads beneath the sword. Saint Simeon’s companion, the Priest Habdelai, was also beheaded. When they came to the Priest Ananias, he suddenly trembled. Then one of the dignitaries, Saint Phusicus, a secret Christian, was afraid that Ananias would renounce Christ, and he cried out, “Do not fear the sword, Elder, and you will see the divine light of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Saint Phusicus betrayed himself by this outburst. The emperor gave orders to pluck out his tongue and to flay the skin off him. Along with Saint Phusicus, his daughter Askitrea was also martyred. Saint Simeon was the last to go before the executioner, and he placed his head on the chopping-block (April 13, 344). Executions continued all during Bright Week until April 23. Saint Azates the Eunuch, a close official to the emperor, also received the crown of martyrdom. The sources indicate that 1,150 Martyrs perished because they refused to accept the Persian religion. When a local Chechen diaspora wanted to build a mosque in that city and were collecting signatures, the Yazidi did not support the building of a mosque, and it in fact was never built. Of course, here, just as in any mission, it is important to have the Holy Scripture and prayers in their native language. With regard to the former, the Institute of Bible Translations in Moscow has already translated and published the New Testament and Pentateuch into the Kurdish language (Kurmanji). As for the latter, so far we have only translated a few of the main Orthodox prayers, and there is much more work yet to do. It is important that more missionaries would come from amongst the Orthodox Kurds themselves, and extremely important that there be Orthodox priests who are Kurds; but I believe that the Lord will bring this to pass when it be pleasing to Him. The sincere fatherly attention that Patriarch Kirill has given to the needs of Orthodox Kurds when the Lord vouchsafed me to meet with His Holiness is very dear to me personally. It is also very meaningful to me that I was able, if only briefly, to learn from a remarkable missionary, Fr. Daniel Sisoev, who was my spiritual instructor, and who, as you know, was murdered in his own church—he accepted death for the name of Christ. I believe that the time will come when the light of Christ will shine over Kurdistan. Missionarism among the Yezidis is very unfair as it misuses their impoverished status and effectively destroys their unique cultural heritage. Yezidis need real help to empower their presence in their traditional domiciles and preserve their vanishing oral literature. The last thing Yezidis need is Bibles and brainwashing -- they have already been enough exposed to proselytic pressures from Muslims.
