Stone of Scone and Coronation Chair at Westminster Abbey (engraving of the nineteenth century)      St. Fergus is venerated as the heavenly patron of Glamis and of the town of Wick in Highland, one of the northernmost towns of Scotland, where the holy bishop founded a church or a monastery. In Aberdeenshire there is a village called St. Fergus where this saint most probably preached. Finally, the village of Halkirk on River Thurso (Highland) is linked to our saint who built a church there. In ancient times there existed a cathedral in Halkirk, which in the thirteenth century was transferred to Dornoch. Today there is a ruined Halkirk Kirk in the village, which once was used as a chapel of the bishop’s palace. Its patron-saint was either St. Fergus or St. Catherine. John Anthony McGuckin Newly Revealed Saints JOHN A. MCGUCKIN The title of “Newly revealed” (Neophaneis) refers to those saints of the Orthodox Church whose relics have been discovered in relatively recent times, often after years of being lost or forgotten, and whose cult has accordingly revived. From the earliest times the concept of the “revelation of a saint” following a significant and wondrous event (thauma) or a dream in which the saint appears to an individual have been a commonly known part of the cult of saints in the Eastern Church. So it was that in the 5th century St. Cyril of Alexandria discovered the relics of Sts. Cyrus and John, Empress Eudoxia discovered the relics of St. Stephen the Protomartyr in Jerusalem, and the priest Nicholas Calligraphos discovered the relics of Sts. Andronikos and Junia at Constantinople. The cult of St. Phanourios of Rhodes developed in 1500 after an icon was discovered in a hidden chapel; and in 1798 a child’s visions led to the discovery ofthe relics ofthe Megara martyrs, whose cult became especially popular after the Greek War of Independence. The relics of St. Patapios and companions were discovered in a cave church at Geraneia in 1904 and became a focus of much pilgrimage. The New Martyr Ephraim (martyred in the 15th century) was found after a series of visions by a Greek nun in 1950 at Nea Makri. Unknown saints’ relics have also been discovered in the monasteries, such as St. Eudokimos found at Vatopedi in 1841, St. Basil of Akarnania found in 1923, and the relics found after a monk’s grave started one day to emit a fountain of water at Neamt in Romania, after the fall of the communist regime there (St. Paisy Velichovsky’s monastery). Archbishop Theophylact visits refugees in Yessentuki Yessentuki (the Stavropol territory), July 6, 2014      On July 4, 2014, Archbishop Theophylact of Pyatigorsk and Cherkessk met with refugees from the eastern regions of the Ukraine and volunteers, assisting the refugees. The meeting took place at the parish of Sts. Peter and Paul in the city of Yessentuki, one of the centers for rendering humanitarian aid, created in the Pyatigorsk Diocese in summer 2014, when the exodus of refugees increased from a handful of people to dozens and hundreds, reports the Pyatigorsk and Cherkessk Diocese’s website. “For us you are not mere guests, but friends and relatives,” stressed the hierarch, addressing to the refugees. People from Mariupol, Sloviansk, Yasynuvata were present at the meeting.      From spring till early July dozens of families arrived to the Caucasus from the Ukraine on their own; hundreds of refugees, mainly women and children, were transported in organized way. Centers of temporary accommodation have been arranged, but the people are also living independently. In the Pyatigorsk Diocese an appeal way made to those who wish to shelter the refugees. Over the course of ten days the database was increased by more than 50 addresses. “We assist those who have nowhere to return and would like to obtain permanent residence here with job placement,” noted Archbishop Theophylact. According to Irina Shonina, who is responsible for distribution and collection of aid in the parish of Sts. Peter and Paul, there is no shortage of people wishing to help. “First of all, the refugees today need personal hygiene supplies, but they are also in need of clothes and footwear, all necessary things for everyday life”.      The hierarch has thanked everybody for aid to the refugees, noting that all churches of the Russian Orthodox Church are praying for establishment of peace and cessation of bloodshed in the Ukraine. 10 июля 2014 г. Third edition of “Everyday Saints” in Serbian released Belgrade, August 12, 2014 The new, now third edition of the book, Everyday Saints and Other Stories by Archimandrite Tikhon (Shevkunov) , has appeared in Serbian. The new translation and publication have been prepared by the Prizren Seminary of Sts. Cyril and Methodius. This is the first publishing project of this educational establishment, which three years ago resumed its work in the historic city of Prizren, situated in the south of Kosovo and Metohija. In addition to the author’s welcome address, the edition contains an introductory article by Bishop Athanasius (Yevtich) and an afterword written by Bishop Teodosije of Raska-Prizren. According to the publishers’ plan, the new edition has become a small token of gratitude to the author and the Sretensky Monastery for their assistance in restoration of the Prizren Seminary. There is a small photo album at the end of the book dedicated to a trip to Russia of Serbian seminary students who stayed at the Moscow Sretensky Monastery in summer 2013.      According to the author’s decision, all the funds received from the sale of the book will be used for repair and restoration works in the seminary building, damaged during the pogrom by Albanian extremists in 2004. The first Serbian edition, prepared by the “Informatika” publishing house, was launched at the 57th international book fair in 2012. The second Serbian edition appeared a year later, on the threshold of the 58th international book fair in Belgrade and was produced by the “Chuvari” publishing house. The Seminary of Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Prizren is one of the oldest educational institutions in the Serbian Orthodox Church. After the war of 1999, the students and teachers left the historical seminary building in Prizren, and in 2004 it was burned down during the pogrom. In autumn of 2011 the seminary in Prizren resumed its work in a difficult financial situation. In spite of all difficulties, the educational process is going on. The seminary’s work is of a special importance for existence of the Serbian Church and people on the territory of Kosovo and Metohija.      13 августа 2014 г. Moscow church celebrates memorial service for those who die on the streets Moscow, March 28, 2017      On Saturday, March 26, a traditional Pannikhida memorial service was celebrated in the Church of the Holy Unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian “on Shubin” in downtown Moscow for all those who have lived and died on the streets. The service was arranged by volunteers who work with the homeless, reports rublev.com . The service of remembrance for all those who did not survive the winter gathered volunteers of the “Friend of the Street” movement, as well as the homeless friends of the departed, and other concerned residents of the city. “People with no roof over their heads die from cold already from the first autumn frosts. Winter 2016 was severe, which means there were quite a number of victims of freezing nights this year,” the organizers commented. The first such memorial was held eleven years ago in memory of Lily Zueva, a young woman who died of cold and sickness on the streets in 2006. Since then all the homeless departed known by “Friends on the Street” have been commemorated annually in the Church of Sts. Cosmas and Damian. Photo: Miloserdie.ru      “People of various ages and incomes pray side by side, those with homes, and those without, and then they sit down to eat together, to share a prepared memorial meal with love,” the “Mercy” charity organization stated, adding that the purpose of the event is “so that people would not be forgotten but would find, perhaps, the final dignity—to depart to the other world with a name.” A similar memorial service for those who died on the streets was served on March 4 in the Kiev Church of All Saints by Bishop Barsanuphius of Borodyanka, followed by a memorial meal.

Those who are seizing temples are warring against the Church of Christ, a priest in Kiev says/Православие.Ru Those who are seizing temples are warring against the Church of Christ, a priest in Kiev says Kiev, October 10, 2014      “The seizure of Orthodox churches, temporarily halted late in 1990s, has started again,” wrote Archimandrite Alipy (Svetlichny), Rector of the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul in the Nyvky neighborhood of Kiev on his “Facebook” page, reports Interfax-Religion . “What does it mean? Beyond a doubt it means that civilized laws are not working in the country, that the state system and the people who became a part of it have no real influence on the country, and that the executive authority is in crisis. Jungle law has set in, and so if you do not help yourself, no one else will”. “The opinion that, ‘if the Ukrainian Orthodox Church had become autocephalous no one would have touched It’, is completely wrong,” Father Alipy writes. “The point is that today churches are being seized by vandals for “the Kyiv Patriarchate.” If the situation takes a favorable turn, they will be seized by Uniates, then by sectarians (today we see that various kinds of sectarians are very bloodthirsty and aggressive, with their pastor Turchinov at the head), and next it will be the turn of pagans and other evil scum. This is the natural jungle law, by which the Ukraine is living today. “Each time the supporters of transfer (to “the Kyiv Patriarchate”) will have to change their orientation in order to keep churches. That is why I say: neither autocephaly nor union will help. They want the Church dead! The very Church of Christ”. 13 октября 2014 г. ‘A Beautiful Problem’: Packed Salt Lake City’s Sts. Peter and Paul Launches New Orthodox Christian Church in Utah County Salt Lake City – A decade of growth has more than tripled the worshipers at Sts. Peter & Paul Orthodox Christian Church, leaving parishioners shoulder-to-shoulder for Sunday services – and overflowing down the stairs and outside for holidays and major feast days. The solution, following an 18-month search for suitable property, was the purchase of a 5.5-acre rural plot of land in Payson. Sts. Peter & Paul, having gained the blessings of the Utah County town’s planners and city council, hopes to begin construction in mid-June. “It’s a beautiful problem,” says the Rev. Fr. Justin Havens, pastor of Sts. Peter & Paul, “and for many years we have been looking for a solution; it became apparent that would be building a new, sister church.” The nave of Sts. Peter & Paul, the historic, Moorish Revival style, red brick and wood church at 355 South 300 East in Salt Lake City, regularly packs in more than 200 for Sunday liturgies; some 400 Orthodox Utahns call Sts. Peter & Paul – which began as a Jewish synagogue in 1903 – their spiritual home. Tentative plans are for His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America, who has enthusiastically blessed the new church project, to consecrate the new Payson church in late fall or early winter of this year. (More specific information on his visit will be provided when finalized). Fr. Havens says the choice of Payson is perfect for his rapidly-growing congregation, half of which is comprised of converts – including former Catholics, Protestants and Latter-day Saints, as well as Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, atheists and agnostics – as well as a rich, multi-ethic mix of Russian, Greek, Serbian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Bulgarian, and Middle Eastern Christians. “Among them are many families who have been driving in, sometimes up to an hour away, from the southern Salt Lake Valley and Utah County. We decided our second church should be in Utah County, a more convenient location for those folks,” Havens explains.

Fire Destroys Main Building with the Church of St. Peter Convent in Pavlodar Photo: mitropolia.kz A fire broke out at Sts. Peter and Paul Convent in the Pavlodar region on April 14, 2021. It destroyed the old building of the convent, in which there was the church in honor of Sts. Peter and Paul, a refectory, a library and monastic cells. The building was founded in 1953, reports  mitropolia.kz . Photo: mitropolia.kz The fire in the convent was reported to the firefighters at 21:40 local time. However, the first unit arrived at the scene only 40 minutes later, and there was not enough water in the car. It was possible to liquidate the fire only at three o’clock in the morning. The fire completely destroyed the convent’s building with the church. None of the residents and staff of the monastery were hurt. The causes of the fire are now being established. Photo: mitropolia.kz In connection with the incident, Bishop Barnabas of Pavlodar and Ekibastuz asked the faithful to pray for the abbess of the convent, Mother Seraphima and the sisters of the convent. For its part, the Pavlodar diocese appealed to all those who would like to help in eliminating the consequences of the fire and carrying out the restoration work. The Sts. Peter and Paul Convent is located in the village of Pavlodarskoe, located 10 km from Pavlodar and since 1998 has been part of the city. The Sts. Peter and Paul parish in the village was established in 1997. On June 9, 1998, by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, Sts. Peter and Paul Church was transformed into Sts. Peter and Paul Pavlodar Convent. At the moment there are eight nuns working in the convent.
