Preparations begin for 800th anniversary of St. Alexander Nevsky Moscow, March 14, 2017 Photo: RIA-Novosti      His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky will participate in an upcoming meeting at Christ the Savior Cathedra’s hall of Church councils dedicated to preparing the events surrounding the 800th anniversary of the birth of the Holy Prince St. Alexander Nevsky, which will be celebrated in 2021. According to RIA-Novosti , the session will also be attended by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the St. Andrew Foundation and the Center for National Glory Vladimir Yakunin, the rector of the Moscow State Conservatory Alexander Sokolov, rector of the Moscow Architectural Institute Dmitry Shvidkovskii, and the president’s assistant Andrei Fursenko. “The Church attaches special importance to the person of Alexander Nevsky as an historical figure and as a saint of the Russian Church, and one of the most beloved and revered amongst our people. The celebration of his jubilee, the preparations for which have already begun, will undoubtedly be a very important milestone for both the state and Church in the formation of the national consciousness of our compatriots,” stated the patriarch’s press secretary Fr. Alexander Volkov. Since December 2006 the Moscow Patriarchate and St. Andrew’s Foundation have ran the “Alexander Nevsky” program, which has brought the holy prince’s relics to cities of Russia, Latvia, Belarus, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, built temples in his honor, and arranged “Alexander Days” in many regions throughout Russia. Prince Alexander Yaroslavovich was born in 1221, and at different times of his life bore the titles Prince of Novgorod, Prince of Kiev, and later Grand Prince of Vladimir. His major military victory was won in his youth. He later became more famous as a politician and diplomat. St. Alexander was canonized by the Church as a Right-Believing monarch, glorified for his righteous life, but not becoming a martyr or passion-bearer. The Grand Prince spread Christianity in the northern lands of Pomerania and in the Golden Horde, and received the monastic schema before he died. His veneration began immediately after his death, and in 1724 his relics were festively relocated to St. Petersburg, to the St. Alexander Nevsky Lavra, by order of Tsar Peter I.

Ancient Russian chroniclers called Prince Vladimir equal-to-the-apostles, for his podvig was on the same scale as that of the apostles: an entire, vast country was enlightened with the light of the Christian faith through his efforts. Nevertheless, then as now there are those who aren’t pleased with Prince Vladimir’s choice. They suppose that if Vladimir had chosen not Orthodoxy, but for example Judaism or Islam, life would be easier for the Russians. A correspondent for Pravoslavie.ru asked Archpriest Artemy Vladimirov and Archimandrite Alypy (Svetlichny) what they thought it would be like if St. Vladimir has chosen a different faith. For him the faith became something unlike anything else. It was more precious than air, the sun’s rays, food or drink Archpriest Artemy Vladimirov, head priest and father confessor of the St. Alexy Convent, Moscow, and member of the Russian Writer’s Union. —Today’s people, who have resigned themselves to the name, “consumer” and “average person”, cannot even imagine what Prince Vladimir’s heart lived by when he was in his phase of a torturous search for faith, desiring to find some meaning for his life, and he sought out spiritual teachers to follow. Very few know that even from his earliest years, as he listened to the stories of his pious grandmother, St. Olga, the future Grand Prince of a great nation became lost in thoughts about service to the almighty Creator of heaven and earth. Apparently the time had not yet come. Faith for him became something unlike anything else. It was more precious than air, the sun’s rays, food or drink. As an ingenious ruler, strategist, and merciful master responsible for thousands of souls, it became clear to him at a certain moment that a sovereign nation could not develop and Kievan Rus’ could not become strong upon the foundation of paganism accompanied by its unbridled passions and division into many different tribes. Therefore Prince Vladimir, as is stated in his Life, listened attentively as each preacher and teacher of different faiths stated his respective case.

Having said that, Pravmir provides daily articles from an autonomous news service, weekly wall newspaper for churches, lectorium, photos, videos, hosting and servers. About Pages Проекты «Правмира» Raising Orthodox Children to Orthodox Adulthood The Daily Website on How to be an Orthodox Christian Today Twitter Telegram Parler RSS Donate Navigation St. Vladimir’s Choice Indeed, Christianity, unlike the pagan way of life – be it in deep antiquity or at the present time – requires work on oneself, the struggle with one’s passions, the constant training of the spirit and will, and ascending above. Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia 28 July 2014 I cordially great you all on this great feast day: the Day of the Baptism of Russia and the feast day of our Baptizer: the Holy, Right-Believing, and Equal to-the-Apostles Grand Prince Vladimir. At this majestic monument, with a marvelous view of the Dnieper, one cannot but help but imagine the great feat that the Right-Believing and Equal-to-the-Apostles accomplished here. The Baptism of Russia was preceded by years of cautious study of all the religious choices that were then available. From all this variety, Prince Vladimir made the fateful choice of accepting the Orthodox Faith. And inasmuch as the Prince’s Baptism was not just a private matter – after all, the head of the nation was being Baptized – his choice became that of the entire nation. We cannot even imagine how difficult this step would have been for the Holy Prince Vladimir. Each of us knows from personal experience how difficult it is to resist entrenched traditions and customs, even if they are bad customs. They get into people’s flesh and blood; they create a kind of external culture, breaking with which is an act of courage, an act that is undoubtedly viewed negatively by others. So it was in the time of Prince Vladimir. For many, the paternal pagan faith was near and dear. It indulged human passions; it liberated human instincts; it was accompanied by both stormy feasts and bloody sacrifices. This faith formed not only the national character of the people, but also a kind of visible culture; however, the great Right-Believing and Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince took a decisive step in the opposite direction.

Photo: S. Vlasov/http://www.patriarchia.ru/ Known for being cruel and unjust, Prince Vladimir was transformed by baptism so much that people called him the Red Sun, the Church leader said. “You don’t call someone like that out of fear, but only out of love,” the patriarch said, adding that the prince “transformed not only himself, but also ancient Russia into a powerful unified state.” “Prince Vladimir must be an example for all rulers, both ours and possibly the world over,” Patriarch Kirill said. “Especially today, when infighting and terrible conflicts accompanied by manifestation of cruelty and human malice are taking place across Prince Vladimir’s historical Russia, it is very important for the rulers who are thinking of the need to unite people regardless of their various views and beliefs, to be guided by love, Christian wisdom, so that their personalities, to use modern parlance, and there policies were appealing to the people. And in saying this I think above all of Ukraine,” the patriarch said. The Epiphany Cathedral was not big enough to admit everyone who came. Several hundred people watched the church ceremony broadcast live onto a video screen in a nearby park. Volunteers from Epiphany Family, a regional Christian Orthodox youth movement, were there to help believers find their way around the place and give them water. All visitors were given pocket-sized icons of the Saint Prince Vladimir with a patriarchal blessing on the reverse side.
