Blessing of St. Vladimir Statue in Smolensk August 31, 2015 Photo: Patriarchia.ru      The Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill consecrated a statue of Kievan Prince Vladimir in Smolensk in western Russia on Sunday. The statue, which now adorns the picturesque embankment of the Dnieper River, reminds Smolensk residents of the year 990 when the local population was baptized by Prince Vladimir, which is evidenced by historical chronicles. The ceremony of unveiling of the statue was attended by Russian Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Central Federal District Alexander Beglov and acting head of the Smolensk Region Alexei Ostrovsky. The monument is a 4-meter bronze statue mounted on a 5-meter base. Prince Vladimir of Kievan Rus who presses an Orthodox cross to his chest overlooks the Dnieper River. With his right hand, the Prince points to the river in whose waters Smolensk residents were baptized. The statue was made by member of the Russian Artists’ Union, Smolensk resident Valery Grashchenkov. His project was endorsed personally by Patriarch Kirill. The Monument to Prince Vladimir in Moscow Another monument to Prince Vladimir is set to be opened in Moscow. However, heated debates have erupted over the place of the statue’s location. The Moscow city authorities have announced plans to unveil the Prince Vladimir monument on the bank of the Moskva river on November 4, when Russia marks People’s Unity Day. The 25-metre statue featuring the Prince with an Orthodox cross in his hands was supposed to overlook Moscow from Sparrow Hills, the capital’s highest point, with its back to one of the famous Stalin skyscrapers, Moscow State University. However, the Russian Military-Historical Society urged the Moscow authorities to find a different location for the statue, commemorating 1,000 years since Prince Vladimir’s death. The society said that plans to unveil the statue on Sparrow Hills “raised public concerns” and could be dangerous as the land in this area was unstable. More than 50,000 Muscovites signed an online petition against the statue’s construction, fearing the 330-ton monument could slide down the hill, a popular tourist site. Meanwhile, over one-third of Muscovites have voted that the huge statue of Prince Vladimir of Kiev should be unveiled in a square next to the Kremlin, according to information earlier posted on the Active Citizen project’s website. “A total of 34.67% [of Muscovites] voted for Borovitskaya Square,” the statement said. Lubyanka Square, the former home of a famous statue of Bolshevik revolutionary “Iron” Felix Dzerzhinsky, got 32.12% of the votes. More than 234,500 Muscovites took part in the vote. 31 августа 2015 г. Смотри также Комментарии Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку

Over 75,000 believers venerate relics of St. Vladimir in Belarus Moscow, July 9, 2015      O n July 7, 2015, the visit of relics of the Holy Prince Vladimir, Equal-to-the-Apostles, to the cities and towns of Belarus ended. The itinerary included five Belarusian cities: Brest, Grodno (Hrodna), Minsk, Mohilev, and Vitebsk (Vitsebsk), where around 75,000 believers venerated the shrine, reports the Synodal Information Department of the Moscow Patriarchate. Bringing of the St. Vladimir’s relics to the cities of Russia and Belarus was organized on the Russian Orthodox Church’s initiative with support of the St. Basil the Great Charitable Foundation. It is timed to coincide with the 1000th anniversary of repose of the Holy Prince Vladimir, the Baptizer of Russia (Rus’), which is widely celebrated this year. The visit of the shrine to many cities and towns of Russia and Belarus began on May 27 in Tula and is to finish on December 1 in Kaliningrad. The scheme of the relics’ journey is divided into seven itineraries (stages) and includes 51 cities of Russia and 5 cities of Belarus. The full information on the event and the itinerary of bringing of the relics can be found on the St. Basil the Great Foundation’s website. Reference Prince Vladimir (feast: July 28) is one of the most venerated saints in the Russian Orthodox Church. The role of his personality in the present-day Russia is crucial. Not only was the holy prince the pioneer of Christianity in Kievan Russia, but he also was the embodiment of an ideal and wise ruler. Prince Vladimir was buried on July 15, 1015, in a marble sarcophagus inside the Church of the Tithes (of Dormition of the Mother of God) in Kiev. Later the Mongols destroyed the original church, and the sarcophagus with relics of the holy prince remained for a long time under the ruins, until in 1635, by order of Metropolitan Peter (Mohyla) of Kiev and Halych (now venerated as a saint), the area was cleared and the sarcophagus discovered. Then a portion of the relics of St. Vladimir was sent to Moscow, to Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov and they remained at the Moscow Kremlin’s Dormition Cathedral. In the Soviet era and until recently the relics were kept in the Moscow Kremlin museum treasuries. In 2010, the relics in the original reliquary were solemnly given to the Russian Orthodox Church and placed inside the Patriarchal Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. 13 июля 2015 г. “This new monument,” the president noted, “is a tribute of respect to our distinguished ancestor, an especially revered saint, statesman and warrior, and spiritual founder of the Russian state.” “Prince Vladimir has forever entered into history as a gatherer and protector of the Russian lands, as a visionary politician, having created the foundation for a strong, united, centralized state, thus incorporating various peoples, tongues, cultures, and religions into one great family. Photo: kremlin.ru His era knew many achievements, the most important and determinative, of course, and pivotal of them being the Baptism of Rus’. This choice became the common spiritual fountain for the peoples of Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, and laid the foundation of moral values which define our lives even till now. Precisely this sturdy moral support, cohesion, and unity helped our ancestors overcome difficulties, and live and triumph for the glory of the Fatherland, strengthening from generation to generation its power and greatness. And today our duty is to stand together against modern challenges and threats, leaning on our spiritual precepts, on the priceless tradition of unity and harmony, to move forward, ensuring the continuity of our thousand-year history,” emphasized Vladimir Putin. Following the opening ceremony Patriarch Kirill blessed the monument. Earlier that day the president and patriarch laid flowers at the monument to Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky on Red Square. Representatives of the various churches and confessions represented in Russia, as well as youth movement activists and representatives of public national-cultural organizations were present at the flower-laying ceremony. Passion-Bearer Gleb, in Holy Baptism David      The Holy Prince Gleb, in Holy Baptism David, was one of the first Russian martyrs called “Passion-Bearers.” He suffered together with his brother Prince Boris (Roman in Holy Baptism). After the murder of St Boris, Svyatopolk the Accursed sent to his younger brother Prince Gleb a messenger with false information about their father, Great Prince Vladimir, who had died from illness, thereby using deceit to murder another possible claimant to the Kievan throne. The deceived Prince Gleb hastened off to Kiev with a small company. His apprehensive brother Yaroslav, having caught up with him at Smolensk, was unable to delay the saint, who did not suspect such wickedness on the part of his brother Svyatopolk. Not far from Smolensk the assassins came upon the boat of St Gleb, who made no resistance, but asked meekly that they should spare him because of his young age. At the command of the murderers Gleb’s cook slit his throat. The body of the prince was buried in a desolate place not far from Smolensk, “between two tree-trunks,” i.e., in a simple wooden coffin (+1015). In the year 1019-1020 his brother Yaroslav found the grave of St Gleb. The body, being incorrupt, was transferred to Vyshgorod near Kiev and buried beside holy Prince Boris. Later on, the relics of the brothers were transferred (May 2) into the church of St Basil the Great, and there at the crypts of these holy Passion-Bearers many miracles were worked. Metropolitan John of Kiev compiled a service to the Passion-Bearer princes and also established a feastday for them together on July 24, which dates from the first half of the eleventh century. The Russian Church from of old has venerated these brothers, who unceasingly have rendered prayerful assistance to their native land, particularly in years of grievous tribulation. Thus, just before the Battle of the Neva in 1240, the Passion-Bearers Boris and Gleb appeared in a vision to one of the soldiers of holy Prince Alexander Nevsky (November 23, August 30, and May 23), and they aided the Russians during the combat. The chronicles are filled with the accounts of the various manifestations of mercy, witnessed at their tombs, and of the victories gained through their help. Many churches and monasteries were built throughout Russia in honor of the holy Passion-Bearers Boris and Gleb. The Orthodox Church in America 16 сентября 2016 г. The year of St. Theodore’s death is unknown, but it is probable that he died in the second half of the fifteenth century at a great old age (S. M. Soloviev in his History of Russia gives the year of his death as 1483). The saint was buried in the Far Caves of St. Theodosius (He is also commemorated on the Synaxis of the Monastic Fathers of the Far Caves, August 28/September 10). His glorification apparently took place at the end of the sixteenth century, since in the year 1638 the hieromonk Athanasius Kal’nophysky testified that, “St. Theodore rests in the Theodosiev Cave, where his body was discovered incorrupt.” (From OCA.org ). St. Yaropolk, prince of Vladimir, Volhynia Also Commemorated November 22/December 5 St. Yaropolk Holy Prince Yaropolk Izyaslavich, in Holy Baptism Peter, was the grandson of Yaroslav the Wise, and great-grandson of St. Vladimir. He shared the sad fate of his father, the Kievan Great Prince Izyaslav, expelled by his brothers from Kiev. Yaropolk journeyed on various missions for his father to the Polish king, the German emperor, and the Bishop of Rome St. Gregory VII (1073-1085). Upon the death of Great Prince Svyatoslav in 1078, Prince Izyaslav was restored to his principality, and Yaropolk received Vyzhgorod. After the death of his father, he was given as his appanage the city of Vladimir-Volhynia, from which the Rostislavichi attempted to displace him. On the way from Vladimir to Zvenigorod-Galitsk, Yaropolk was treacherously murdered by Neryadets, one of his retainers (+1086). The murderer had been bribed by the Rostislavichi. The body of Yaropolk was transferred to Kiev and on December 5 was buried at the monastery of St. Demetrius in the Church of St. Peter, which he himself had begun to build. Many Church memorials, beginning with the Chronicle of St. Nestor, testify that the murdered Prince Yaropolk is to be venerated in the rank of saints well-pleasing to God.
