The textbook considers achievements of historical and philosophical knowledge in a wide sphere of the Byzantine philosophy. It is designed for lecturers, undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Faculties of Philosophy.

Archive Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk and Archbishop Antony of Vienna and Budapest consecrate the Church of Archangel Michael in Laa an der Thaya in Austria 1 October 2018 year 10:06 On 30 September 2018, 18 th  Sunday after Pentecost, afterfeast of the Elevation of the Cross, commemoration day of the Holy Martyrs Faith, Hope, Love and their Mother Sophia, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, while in Austria upon the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, and Archbishop Antony of Vienna and Budapest, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Administration for Institutions Abroad, consecrated the Church of Archangel Michael in the town of Laa an der Thaya in Austria. The church was built at the burial place of the Soviet soldiers who had died there during World War II.  The hierarchs celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the newly consecrated church. Concelebrating with them were Archimandrite Agafor (Markevich) from the Lavra of the Holy Trinity and St. Sergius; Archpriest Vladimir Tyschiuk, rector of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Vienna; Hieromonk Ioann (Kopeykin), pro-rector for advancement of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Theological Institute of Postgraduate Studies; and Archdeacon Viktor Shilovsky, a cleric of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Vienna. After the Liturgy Archbishop Antony of Vienna and Budapest cordially greeted Metropolitan Hilarion who had laid the foundation of the Church of Archangel Michael while serving as the ruling hierarch of the diocese of Vienna and Austria. Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk expressed his joy over an opportunity to visit Austria and take part in the consecration of the church, saying in particular: “Today we have prayed for all those buried here, for our soldiers buried in this land. There are over 200 military graves in the Austrian land, and over 4 thousand in the neighbouring Germany. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers laid down their lives here so that we could have the peaceful skies above our heads. We believe that through their heroic deeds they gained the everlasting life, and pray for them as for heroes who laid down their lives for the sake of others, thus fulfilling the commandment of our Lord Jesus Christ.

His Holiness mentioned an educational project of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Theological Institute of Postgraduate Studies – the Summer Institute that offers hospitality to representatives of various Churches who want to learn more about the life of the Russian Orthodox Church. Participating in the Summer Institute programme in Moscow last June was a delegation of the OCA clerics and laypeople led by Bishop Daniel of Santa Rosa. Having noted an important role of the Moscow Representation of the Orthodox Church in America and the Russian Orthodox Church’s Representation in New York, Patriarch Kirill pointed out that the year 2019 marks the 25th anniversary of the OCA Metochion in Moscow. His Holiness expressed his willingness to endorse a project of restoration of the church of the OCA Moscow Representation by contacting representatives of the Moscow city authorities. “We have also received your request concerning the canonization of Archpriest Pyotr Postnikov who had served at this church and had been executed at the Butovo shooting range,” His Holiness added, “We will refer this case to the Canonization Commission which will examine the circumstances surrounding the death of Archpriest Pyotr. We will share with you all the information and I hope nothing will prevent us from complying with your request.” “I am satisfied with the work of our Representation in New York,” Patriarch Kirill also said and noted that Bishop Matthew of Sourozh, the acting representative, had been given a lofty, honourable and important responsibility to maintain and promote brotherly relations between the two Churches. “It is gratifying to see that the Orthodox Church in America is developing. May it continue – God willing,” His Holiness Patriarch Kirill said. His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon of All America and Canada expressed his joy over an opportunity to take part in the celebrations marking the 10 th  anniversary of the 2009 Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church that elected the 16th Patriarch for the Moscow Throne. “I had a privilege, along with His Eminence Archbishop Benjamin of San Francisco to represent the Orthodox Church in America at those enthronement ceremonies. And it as, therefore, a double joy for me to be here this week,” Metropolitan Tikhon said.

This article is an attempt at a systematic reconstruction of the doctrine of st. Nicholas Cabasilas on the Eucharist as Sacrifice. In the work of st. Nicholas «Commentary on the Divine Liturgy», the Eucharist appears as a God-Human Sacrifice, in which the Church as a whole, and every Christian in particular, under the guise of gifts (bread and wine), offers itself, its life as a sacrifice to God. God responds to this gift and gives back Life itself, Himself. An important discovery was the definition of the semantic relationship between the stages of the Eucharistic Sacrifice, the stages of the Old Testament sacrifices, and the stages of The Economy of Salvation, accomplished by Christ. It was established that every sacrifice is made at the moment of state change: when a «gift» (δρον) becomes a «sacrifice» (θυσα). If the Sacrifice of Calvary was made by crucifixion, when Christ from the «Gift» to God became the «Sacrifice» to Him, and blood sacrifices in the Old Testament were made by slaughter, when the sacrificial animal from the gift became the sacrifice to God; then the Eucharistic Sacrifice is performed by the transformation (μεταβολ), when the gifts (bread and wine) become the true Sacrifice, i.e., the Body and Blood of the Lamb of Christ.

“I believe that our meeting in Cuba gave a fresh impetus to the development of Orthodox-Catholic relations in various spheres. An Orthodox-Catholic working group was established within the framework of the Civil Society Dialogue Forum. As for the cultural cooperation, we have been developing a project of Summer Institute for students of Pontifical universities in Rome. For instance, at the premises of our Ss. Cyril and Methodius Institute of Postgraduate Studies various scholarly meetings and events take place. Besides, during summer months we provide an opportunity to representatives of the Roman Curia and educational institutions of Rome to come to Moscow and learn more about our academic activities and the life of our Church.” “I would also like to thank the Italian Episcopal Conference for their goodwill towards the Russian Orthodox Church’s presence in Italy. Today, as you know, many Russian and Russian-speaking people live in Western Europe. Our pastoral work in various countries, including Italy, is aimed, first of all, at these people, and I would like to thank the Italian bishops for providing church buildings for our liturgical activities.” “Once again I would like to cordially greet you, thank you for the visit, and ask you to convey to His Holiness my brotherly love and joy over this opportunity to meet with you.” Cardinal Angelo De Donatis thanked His Holiness Patriarch Kirill for the opportunity to visit the Lavra, saying, “The place of St. Sergius’ repose is a place where our hearts open up to see the light of the Resurrection.” Cardinal Angelo De Donatis also conveyed to the Primate of the Russian Church greetings from Pope Francis. Science Meets Religion Half-Way One of the most recognized Russian technical schools, The National Research Nuclear University “Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute” or “MEPhI” is introducing a new department which departs from traditional physics and delves into metaphysics: the Theology Department. Its head is Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, who, upon his appointment, immediately traveled overseas in the official capacity. Izvestia talked with Archpriest Vladimir Shmaliy, vice-rector of the Church Postgraduate Studies, who explained that it was the university which came up with the idea – in fact, it was born back in 2010 after the visit of Patriarch Kirill. MEPhI has previously hosted advanced training courses for professors of Orthodox seminaries, which included lectors on astronomy, physics and chemistry. Now religious scholars will pay back by teaching history of the Church, religious dogma, Orthodox culture and Orthodox worship to students willing to take the courses – these will be strictly voluntary. At first a student won’t be able to major in Theology, only take electives as part of humanitarian courses. However, MEPhI’s branch in Sarov Phisical and Technical Institute graduates scholars since 2001. The daily states that the Russian Orthodox Church is preparing a document “Balance of faith and science”, discussion the complicated relationship of the two in modern times: contrary to clichés like “faith versus knowledge” and “faith denounces evolution and nuclear physics”, the real state of things in not so black and white and the Theology department will help students realize that. Besides, the department does not prohibit critical thinking and students do not have to share beliefs of the teaching staff in order to take courses.   Source: Voice of Russia Code for blog Since you are here… …we do have a small request. More and more people visit Orthodoxy and the World website. However, resources for editorial are scarce. In comparison to some mass media, we do not make paid subscription. It is our deepest belief that preaching Christ for money is wrong.
