Seminary on the island of Halki may be restored in exchange for opening of a mosque in Thessaloniki Ankara, May 11, 2015 The Orthodox seminary on the island of Halki (Turkey) may be restored in exchange for opening of a mosque in Thessaloniki, Greece. This condition was laid down by the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.      According to Blagovest-info, this information was spread by the Hürriyet Turkish newspaper with the reference to editor-in-chief of one history journal who had discussed the matter with Erdogan in person. The Turkish President said that he was ready to give his consent on reopening of the Orthodox seminary on Halki; however, he added, Greece was not intending to open mosques on its territory at all. Later Metin Kulunk, Member of the Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party, specified that the President meant the Fethiye Cami Mosque in Athens, and not a mosque in Thessaloniki. Closure in 1971 of the Orthodox seminary on Halki (one of the Princes Islands in the Sea of Marmara near the coast of Istanbul) deprived the clergy of the Patriarchate of Constantinople of most of the theological preparation in Turkey. Lack of an Orthodox theological school on the territory of Turkey is worsening the position of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in general: according to the Turkish laws, only citizens of Turkey have a right to hold top posts in the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and now they can obtain a theological education only abroad. The seminary on Halki was founded in 1844 by the Ecumenical Patriarch German IV. For the period between 1844 and 1971 the theological school issued 930 certificates of degrees. Although the majority of its students were members of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, there were also Orthodox Christians from other countries among them, as well as Catholics and Protestants who attended postgraduate courses. In 1964 the authorities prohibited acceptance of foreign students to the seminary, and in 1971 the theological school was closed completely. 12 мая 2015 г. According to Greek newspaper “To Vima,” SYRIZA members associated with Mount Athos are trying to convince Archbishop Anastasios to become the next Greek President. So far, Anastasios is refusing, citing his social work and congregation in Tirana as the reason for his desire to remain in Albania. However, the report said, SYRIZA party members will continue their efforts to change the Archbishop’s mind. The new SYRIZA-led government is seeking to propose a non-political person for President after the refusal of European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos. The Archbishop of Tirana, Durres and All Albania Anastasios (last name Giannoulatos) was born on November 4, 1929, in Piraeus. His work was soon recognized as he was ordained Bishop of Androusa in 1972. During the award ceremony, an address of greetings was read out. It said, in particular: “In his capacity as chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion carries out the most responsible tasks entrusted to him by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and worthily represents the Russian Orthodox Church at the highest international forums and church assemblies. Apart from being a subordinate of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill and a permanent member of the Holy Synod, Metropolitan Hilarion is the rector of the Ss. Cyril and Methodius Theological Institute of Postgraduate Studies and the anchor of The Church and The World TV programme, in which he tells millions of viewers about Jesus Christ, the Divine Gospel and the Church. “It would take much time to enumerate all theological monographs, patrological works, lectures and presentations by His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion. He is a Professor and Doctor of Divinity Honoris Causa of many Russian and foreign universities. “Metropolitan Hilarion has many talents, which he devotes to God the Lord. As a gifted composer, he bears witness to Christ by his music as well. Blessed are the years of his archpastoral ministry in Hungary where he served from 2003 to 2009. In our country he found fresh inspiration for his theological and musical activities. “Metropolitan Hilarion was born in the country where Christians had been subjected to persecutions in the recent past, and as a bishop he takes the suffering of Christians living in foreign countries to heart. He was one of the first church hierarchs who raised his voice in defence of Christians and called upon state leaders to put an end to persecution and extermination of Christians.” DECR Communication Service /Patriarchia.ru Календарь ← 7 December 2023 year

Archive Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk speaks at global Christian youth forum in Manila 10 August 2019 year 11:23 On 8th – 10th August 2019, the Jesus Global Youth Day took place at the Mall of Asia Arena in the city of Manila, the Philippines, bringing together over thirty thousand participants from more than 100 countries.  With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, attended the forum. On 9th August, Metropolitan Hilarion addressed the audience of 30 thousand young people, speaking about the importance of the personality of the Lord Jesus Christ in the life of a Christian. The DECR chairman also told the young people from various continents who gathered together in Manila about the Orthodox faith, the Russian Orthodox Church and its history in the 20th century, making a special emphasis on the revival of church life in the recent thirty years. “Such upturn in religious life in the territory of the former atheistic empire cannot be caused by natural or socio-political factors alone, but clearly is of supernatural character. This revival does not spring from our human efforts. Its main reason is the personality of our Lord Jesus Christ – God Incarnate and Saviour of the world,” the DECR chairman said. Among those present at the meeting were Mr. Teodoro Locsin, Foreign Affairs Secretary of the Philippines; Mr. Igor Khovayev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of the Philippines; Metropolitan Sergy of Singapore and Southeast Asia, Patriarchal Exarch of Southeast Asia; Metropolitan Pavel of Khanty-Mansiysk and Surgut, acting administrator of the diocese of the Philippines and Vietnam; Mr. K. Mayorov, third secretary of Russia’s Embassy in the Philippines; Hieromonk Pitirim (Dondenko), secretary of the Exarchate; Hieromonk Alexy (Lapshin), cleric of the Iveron Church in Manila; and Mr. D.
