Archive “For the Unity of the Church” by Metropolitan Daniel of Vidin is published in four languages 18 January 2022 year 11:26 The book offers the original of the letter by Metropolitan Daniel of Vidin to His Holiness Patriarch Neophyte of Bulgaria and members of the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church written in the Bulgarian language and the Russian, English and Greek versions sent out to the heads and hierarchs of some Local Orthodox Churches, including the Patriarchates of Alexandria, Jerusalem and Romania, and the Orthodox Churches of Cyprus, Greece, and Albania. The letter is a short historical and canonical study in which the actions of Phanar are thoroughly analyzed on the basis of the documents about the transfer of the Metropolis of Kiev to the Moscow Patriarchate in 1686, canonical rules as well as the tomoi published by the Patriarchate of Constantinople. In the preface to the book, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, points out that Metropolitan Daniel shows in his work that the actions of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in Ukraine, which break the two-thousand-year-long canonical tradition, have been caused by dogmatic distortions, such as negation of the conciliarity principle and claims to the primacy in the Orthodox Church of the Patriarch of Constantinople instead of Jesus Christ. The edition prepared by the Poznanie Publishers in cooperation with the Foundation for Support of Christian Culture and Heritage is the third in the series of ten books on the international and inter-Orthodox relations. Among the authors of the next publications are Bishop Antonije of Moravica (Serbian Orthodox Church) and Protopresbyter Anastasios Gotsopoulos (Orthodox Church of Greece). Metropolitan Daniel’s letter will undoubtedly make it into the history of the Church. The reason for its writing in March 2019 was a discussion in the Bulgarian Orthodox Church about the tragic situation in Ukraine, the interference of the Patriarchate of Constantinople into the Ukrainian church issue, its involvement in the formation of the so-called Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), and ‘the tomos of autocephaly” granted to the newly-established schismatic structure. Have you been able to see many of the Orthodox churches in Japan? I lived in the churches of Tokyo and Kyoto. We used to visit the churches in Osaka and Kobe, since they were close to our church in Kyoto. I have been to the church in Sendai three times: once, I accompanied a delegation headed by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, who visitied Japan in 2012 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the repose of St. Nicholas of Japan, Equal-to-the-Apostles. The visit of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill to the Cathedral Church of Sendai Eparchy, September 15, 2012.      It was the second Patriarchal visit in the history of the Japanese Church. How long have you been in Russia? I've been living in Moscow for two years now. I'm in the second year of the Master's program of SS. Cyril and Methodius General Church Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies, created in 2009 by the decision of the Holy Synod and on the initative of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill. The rector of this school is Metr. Hilarion of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department of External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate. The program we have is substantial and intensive. Special attention is paid in our courses to the study of foreign languages, in particular, English. The professors of General Church Postgraduate Studies work at the Department of External Church Relations. The subject Inter-Orthodox Relations especially interests me. The professors of this discipline are people working in DECR, who are acquainted with the most pressing issues in this area. Besides the study of the required subjects, I am writing my Master’s thesis on Vladimir Lossky’s book Outline of the Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church.” In my work I wanted to show to what extent this book has interest and is topical for the Orthodox faithful of Japan. Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokalamsk and Fr. Nikolai (Ono) after his tonsure.      Where do you serve? Being a hierodeacon, I serve in the Moscow church named after the icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” on (Great) Ordynka (Street). 3 After my arrival in Russia I became the subdeacon of the dean of this church, Vladyka Hilarion. And there, on April 30, 2013, I was tonsured a monk by His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill; and on May 5, 2013, on the day of Holy Pascha, I was also ordained by him to the rank of hierodeacon. The priests, helpers, and parishioners of this church are good, kind people. The Synodal Choir sings splendidly. For me, this church in honor of the icon of the Mother of God is beloved and dear, and holds a most important place in my heart.

The linguistic preparation of Chinese students as a form of missionary activity was examined in her presentation by Ye.A. Vasina (senior lecturer at the department of theory and methodology of translation at Moscow State University, senior lecturer at the department of the Chinese, Vietnamese, Burmese, Thai, Lao and Khmer languages at the Moscow State Institute for International Relations), while the study of Chinese at the Russian spiritual mission as the foundation for the translating of theological texts was touched upon by A.V. Lebedeva (senior lecturer at the department of Chinese philology at the faculty of Eastern Studies at Saint Petersburg State University). Also giving presentations were Chinese postgraduate students at Moscow State University Konstantin Tchou Jutsi (department of church history at the faculty of history) and Yulia Tjan Siuaniu (department of the philosophy of religion and religious studies at the faculty of philosophy). Konstantin touched upon the distorted notions of Orthodoxy within Chinese society, while Yulie informed the audience with a comparison of the concepts of equality in Confucianism and Christianity. Priests carrying out their pastoral service in various parts of China Father Ioann Scholokov (Shanghai), Father Andrei Bukhteyev (Dalian) and Father Kirill Shkarbul (Taipei) shared their experience of the modern-day life of the Orthodox communities in China in their online presentations. Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk warmly congratulated all those present on the 10 th  anniversary of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Theological Institute of Postgraduate Studies, saying in particular: “Our task is to not only graduate educated people, but also give to all our students an opportunity to be introduced to the treasury of the Holy Tradition of the Church. It refers not only to those who will dedicate their life to serving the Church, but also to those who come to us from secular institutions of higher education and may after graduating from our institute continue working in a secular field. “We should not only provide our students with the bulk of knowledge, but also help them make the life of the Church their own life. Among those enrolling in the Theological Institute of Postgraduate Studies are bishops, clergymen and devout laypeople, as well as those who are only making their first steps in church life. At the same time they are making the first steps in the field of theological education. “Among our tasks is to increase educational attainment of our students and graduates. To do that, we should pay attention to such matters as lecture attendance and teaching theology and other disciplines to a high standard. “We have attained a certain level, but should constantly raise it. It requires efforts from all the faculty and, of course, the administration of the Theological Institute. Our task is to be an exemplary educational institution, in some sense a leader in theological science, since it so happened that for over these ten years the Theological Institute of Postgraduate Studies has been a driving force helping promote theological education at various levels, including secular institutions. “It is important to offer high quality theological education. That is why, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, we have been working to upgrade the whole corpus of study materials for theological schools. It refers not so much to postgraduate and master’s programmes, as to bachelor’s programmes, that is, to the first level of higher education. The task given us by His Holiness the Patriarch and the Supreme Church Council is to upgrade, as quickly as possible, the whole corpus of course books for theological schools. According to my estimate, we have to write and publish at least sixty new course books. About ten books have already been written; some twenty books are being compiled; and we still have some thirty more to write. The books will be written by individual and collective authors. I hope very much that this work will bear its fruit and we will be able to provide our theological schools with good quality study materials.”

According to the testimony of the Head of the DER, ‘one of the aims of the reforms to theologian education in the Russian Church is to bring it into conformity to the standards of secular academic studies in Russia and also of Western academic theology’. The Archpastor emphasized that St Tikhon’s is ahead in the reforms to theological education and has set an example for other educational institutions. In particular, the experience of St Tikhon’s was used when the Church set up its St Kyrill and Methodius Postgraduate and Doctoral Courses, under the Chancellorship of Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk. Today there is close collaboration between the two educational institutions: the Master’s programme and a strategy for future development are being worked on. Metropolitan Hilarion expressed the hope that collaboration between the Church’s Postgraduate Courses and St Tikhon’s University will develop further, that there will be exchanges of experience and tutors and that graduates of the University will apply for the Postgraduate Courses. In Metropolitan Hilarion’s words, modern society lacks witness to the values of the Gospel because there are psychological and even linguistic barriers between the Church and society. ‘The Church lives according to concepts, thoughts and experiences that are very far from many of our contemporaries. And it is quite complex for people to cross the frontier that separates this world from the world of the Church. To take this step people need guides which they lack. We do not have enough bridges between the world of the Church and secular society’. “You may become those bridges, those guides, you who study in an Orthodox University, but are acquiring a wide range of knowledge in various fields’, continued Metropolitan Hilarion, talking to his student audience. ‘One of the missionary challenges of the Church is the education of those who will be able, living in society and working in secular jobs, to carry out the great and vital missionary task bequeathed to us by the Lord Himself’.

After 1922 and the population exchanges between Greece and Turkey, the area was declared a restricted military zone and the church survived as an ammunition depot. However, while this designation served as protection for as long as the area remained a military zone, the Izmir Municipality’s plans for the construction of a new highway have now put its very existence in danger. In 2011, Doay Korkmaz, a postgraduate student of architecture at the Izmir Institute of Technology, presented his master thesis, titled “Investigation of Conservation Problems of the Prophet Elias (Elijah) Church in Izmir,” the only known study of the church so far. The potential destruction of Profitis Ilias will erase all hope for future research on the structure and remnants from previous eras that might still exist on the ground. This would have a negative impact on the study of Christian Smyrna and most of all on the history of the Greeks of Asia Minor, whose places of worship continue to vanish at an alarming rate after 90 years of neglect.
