August 31, 2018 – During a meeting with journalists, which took place at the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, the DECR chairman Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk told them about the meeting of the primates of the Church of Constantinople and the Russian Orthodox Church. The meeting has taken place today at the building of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in the Phanar quarter in Istanbul. As Metropolitan Hilarion reported, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, having come to Phanar, venerated the shrines in the Patriarchal Cathedral dedicated to the Holy Protomartyr George, including the relics of Ss Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom. At the Patriarchate, the primate of the Russian Church was welcomed by His Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew. The first part of the meeting took place in the official format. Present at it were all the members of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. His Holiness Patriarchate Bartholomew greeted the guest after which His Holiness Patriarch Kirill delivered brief remarks in response. Then the two primates withdrew to Patriarch Bartholomew’s office where a confidential private talk took place. Present at this talk, from the Patriarchate of Constantinople, was Metropolitan Emmanuel of France and from the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk. ‘The talk lasted in total about two and a half hours. It was very frank, very cordial; it really was a talk from heart to heart’, the DECR chairman stressed. His Eminence reminded the journalists that Patriarch Bartholomew and Patriarch Kirill met in 1977 and they have a very long and rich history of personal relationships; as far back as before their election to the Patriarchal ministry, they worked much together for achieving a consensus on very diverse topics on the pan-Orthodox agenda. ‘This meeting was important first of all for the strengthening of personal relationships between the two patriarchs and, of course, for strengthening bilateral relations between our two Churches’ the archpastor said, ‘the interlocutors touched upon a wide range of issues including those on the agenda of the bilateral relations, as well as problems of pan-Orthodox unity. The talk, which began in a very sincere atmosphere, ended on a very friendly note, and the patriarchs exchanged gifts’. Metropolitan Hilarion expressed hope that the meeting would become another important event in the already ages-long history of bilateral relations between the two Churches.

The church is a part of the Patriarchal Chernigov Metochion, which houses the CMI. During the Litany of Fervent Supplication, petitions were offered up for deliverance of the coronavirus infection. After the Litany, Metropolitan Hilarion lifted up a prayer recited at the time of the spread of baneful pestilence. In his sermon at the end of the divine service, Metropolitan Hilarion said the following: “In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit! On the first Sunday after the Pentecost, the Church commemorates all the saints. On the feast of the Pentecost, we remembered how the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles, and they spoke in tongues, and everyone from different nations began to recognize their dialect; how the illiterate Galilean fishermen became bold preachers of the Resurrection of Christ. And today, on the 1st Week after Pentecost, we remember how the Holy Spirit continued to work in the Church throughout the two thousand year period of its history. The Holy Spirit descended on the disciples of the Savior and inspired them to preach Crucified and Risen Christ. During the following centuries, up to the present time, the Holy Spirit has been acting and will continue to act in the Church. Thanks to His action and the assistance of people, the Church has never become impoverished and will not become impoverished in saints.

Cookie policy Head of Russia’s MFA Sergey Lavrov’s interview towards DECR chairman Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk’s 55th birthday The minster of the foreign affairs of the Russian Federation’s interview with Rossiya 24 TV channel. -    Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk will soon mark his fifty-fifth birthday. He is often described as your church ‘counterpart’. Do you think the Russian Orthodox Church needs her own MFA these days? -   The designation ‘Department for External Church Relations’ speaks that Metropolitan Hilarion is engaged in contacts with his numerous counterparts. The canonical territories of the Russian Orthodox Church are much larger than those of Russia. For instance, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church enjoys a broad autonomy. Even contacts with her demand skills of dealing with external partners.  This post is manifested in relations with Local Orthodox Churches and other Christian Churches (including the Vatican, with which His Eminence Hilarion maintains regular contacts), as well as with non-Christian religions. We not just welcome such dialogue but also actively support it. There is quite a number of inter-state and inter-government mechanisms called to promote the dialogue of civilizations. There is even a special structure in the UN - the UN Alliance of Civilizations headed by the former minister of foreign affairs of Spain. It is engaged in organizing contacts for promoting inter-confessional and inter-ethnic accord. In these efforts, the Russian Orthodox Church has something to offer. She is one of the most active parties in this field of inter-civilization and inter-confessional accord.  There is another example of interaction between secular and ecclesial representatives - the World Conference on Inter-Faith and Inter-Ethnic Dialogue held every two years by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the UN Secretary-General. The next one is to be held in May 2022 in Sankt-Petersburg. We will actively cooperate with the Russian Orthodox Church to ensure the right approach to defining the agenda and for this forum to be used to the maximum for promoting the values reflecting Orthodox ideals so much in demand today.

After the Liturgy, His Eminence Hilarion addressed the worshippers with an archpastoral homily: “Dear reverend fathers, brothers and sisters, I congratulate you on the commemoration day of the patrons of our church – St. Varlaam of Khutyn, a Novgorod miracle-worker, and the holy martyr Konstantin, a Moscow presbyter. St. Varlaam of Khutyn has always been a patron of this church. Even before the ‘ ‘Joy to All the Afflicted’ miracle-working icon of the Mother of God was brought here, a church dedicated to St. Varlaam of Khutyn had been standing at this place. This church is now a side-altar. The icon of St. Varlaam reminds us of this Novgorod miracle-worker who had been venerated throughout the great Rus’ and in the capital city of Moscow. This church was built in his honour, rebuilt many times and extended; new side-altars were added, including the one in honour of the ‘Joy to All the Afflicted’ icon. The main side-altar in honour of the Transfiguration was added in the 19 th century.

After the divine service the archpastor addressed the worshippers with a homily: “Dear Fathers, brothers and sisters, I greet all of you on this Sunday which coincides with the commemoration day of the Holy Venerable Anthony the Roman, Wonderworker of Novgorod. “Last week the Lord vouchsafed me to visit the sites associated with the life and ministry of this saint in the land of Novgorod, as well as the Convent of St. Barlaam of Khutyn, where the heavenly patron of our holy church, St. Barlaam, had performed his ascetic deeds. “Of course, you know that the church, initially built on this site, was dedicated to St. Barlaam of Khutyn. It stood in the place of today’s right side-chapel consecrated in the name of the Venerable Barlaam. “As time went by, the church was gradually rebuilt and enlarged, and the construction of the main chancel in honour of the Transfiguration of the Lord and of the side-chapel in honour of the ‘Joy of All Who Sorrow’ Icon was completed. Yet, St. Barlaam has always been venerated in our church thanks to the revered icon in the right side-chapel.

Cookie policy Metropolitan Hilarion: To create an environment favorable for immigrants is a common task for the Church and the state On February 8, 2015, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk as anchorman of the Church and the World program on Russia-24 NV network hosted the head of the Federal Migration Service Directorate for Promoting Integration, Ms Tatiana A. Bazhan. Metropolitan Hilarion: Good afternoon, dear brothers and sisters! You are tuned to the Church and the World program. Today we will talk about cooperation between the Church and the state in the work with immigrants. I have as a guest today the head of the Russia’s Federal Migration Service Department for Promoting Integration, Ms Tatiana Bazhan. Good afternoon, Ms Bazhan!   Ms Bazhan: Good afternoon, Your Eminence! The problem of the work with immigrants and the problem of church-state of cooperation are very vital today. In recent years, Russia has proved fairly attractive for people from a number of countries. There is a great number of immigrants in our country. A few years ago, in 2010, the Federal Migration Service realized that it was not enough to deal only with documenting immigrants and to take only restrictive measures by prohibiting entrance to some or deporting and fining, etc., others. What is important is the humanitarian component precisely in adaptation and integration.   When considerably large groups of people who speak a different language and adhere to a different culture find themselves in our country, it is important that they should have an opportunity for merging into our spiritual, cultural and social space. To do it, titanic work is needed to be carried out. And the FMS began this work for promoting the integration a few years ago. We were aware that this work was still devoid of the necessary legislative support. For this reason, contacts with the civil society proved to be very important.
