Jerusalem’s Holy Sepulchre Church Water Bill Row " Resolved " Amman (Jordan), November 15, 2012 The conflict over unpaid water bills of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem has been resolved, the spokesman for Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia said. “The Holy Sepulchre Church’s water debts have been written off, not without the participation of the Russian Orthodox Church after Patriarch Kirill met with Israeli President Shimon Peres,” Deacon Alexander Volkov said on Wednesday while summing up the five-day visit by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church to the region. Volkov, who heads the Patriarch’s press service, added that the news was announced by Israeli Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov at his meeting with Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Russian Church " s Department of External Church Relations. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which has for centuries been one of the most important pilgrimage destinations for millions of Christians as the purported site of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, earlier in November threatened to close its doors as its bank account was frozen over a debt to an Israeli water company. The church had been exempt from water charges in a tacit agreement with Jerusalem authorities for decades but the Hagihon company, which took over water supply to Jerusalem in the late 1990s, recently demanded payment of a million bill dating back 15 years, including interest. Volkov said the Israeli authorities have written off the Holy Sepulchre Church’s water debt for the past seven years. Regarding the remaining water bills for previous years, a special commission will look into the issue, he said. From 2013, the church will have to pay water bills, but on favorable terms. Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III earlier in November wrote letters to the leaders of Russia, Israel, the United States, Greece, Cyprus and Jordan with an appeal to intervene with the standoff and put a stop “to this flagrant act against the church.” Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the presidential administration will thoroughly study Theophilos " s request for help . The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem shares control of the church with the Armenian Orthodox Patriarchate and the Roman Catholic Franciscan Order through complicated arrangements essentially unchanged for centuries. The site, located within the Christian Quarter of the walled Old City of Jerusalem, attracts more than 1 million pilgrims annually. Patriarch Kirill arrived in Jerusalem on November 9 . It was his first visit to the Holy Land since he was elected to head the Russian Orthodox Church in 2009. During his stay, the Patriarch visited Christian holy sites in Israel, the Palestinian territories and Jordan. He also met with Peres and Jordanian King Abdullah II. RIA Novosti 15 ноября 2012 г. ... Tweet Нравится Patriarch of Jerusalem: no sacrilege in opening Lord’s tomb; believer should not seek for signs Moscow, December 15, 2016      His Holiness Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem has responded to criticisms that restoring the Lord’s Sepulchre constitutes an invasion of a holy space and a sacrilege. Speaking in an interview with the press service of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem he stated, “The fact is that restoration has been ongoing in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for many years already; the only part of the church that remained untouched was the Edicule, which therefore was in need of restoration, particularly of the burial cave of Christ, that is the Holy Sepulchre.” He noted that restoration is being done on the entire complex, which therefore necessarily includes the very funeral bed of the Lord. Head of the restoration project Professor Antonia Moropoulou of the Athens Polytechnic University stated that the marble slab was removed to gain access to the historic masonry underneath which was swollen from decades of rainwater falling through a hole in the roof of the tomb. The walls were restored and water damage fixed. The patriarch further noted that the corroded drainage system, dating to Ottoman times, is also to be restored in the future, to prevent further water damage to the Edicule. Addressing circulating gossip of mysterious occurrences over Jerusalem—the blast of angels’ trumpets and supernatural phenomena in the sky—at the time of the opening of the Lord’s tomb, His Holiness denied such stories, saying, “This is nonsense. There were no such phenomena. Moreover, the Orthodox faith … is reasonable worship… Believers should not ask such questions—it is totally unacceptable.” The patriarch also noted that work is moving according to schedule and they expect to celebrate Pascha 2017 at the Sepulchre. 15 декабря 2016 г. Restoration of Holy Sepulchre completed Moscow, March 21, 2017 Photo: The Times of Israel      The restoration work on the edicule over the Lord’s tomb has been completed according to the previously announced schedule. Earlier, His Holiness Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem stated that the tomb would open to pilgrims sometime between March 22 and 25. The iron cage built around the Holy Sepulchre in 1947 by British authorities has been removed, as the walls of the edicule have been reinforced to be self-sustaining, reports The Times of Israel . The black soot on the stone façade from years of pilgrims’ candles was also cleaned as part of the first restoration work in 200 years. “If this intervention hadn’t happened now, there is a very great risk that there could have been a collapse,” Bonnie Burnham of the World Monuments Fund, which gave the initial million for the million project, said Monday. “This is a complete transformation of the monument.” King Abdullah II of Jordan and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas also donated about 150,000 euros each. The shrine, standing in the middle of the ancient church, was in bad condition after years of water, humidity, and candle smoke. The National Technical University of Athens’ restoration team removed the stone slabs from the edicule’s façade, and cleaned and replaced them, reinforcing the walls with tubes of grout and titanium bolts. Restorers also cut a small window through the edicule’s marble walls for pilgrims to see into the tomb itself, where Christ was laid after His Crucifixion and death on Holy Friday. While historians believed the original remnants of the tomb had been destroyed over the centuries, with the original church being destroyed in 1099 by order of the Fatimid caliph of Egypt, researchers in fact found a limestone slab with a cross carved into it that dated to the fourth century, to the time when Sts. Constantine and Helen had the original Holy Sepulchre Church built. Further restorations are planned to consolidate the underground drainage and sewage pipes and to stabilize the shrine’s foundation. The restoration team’s worksite is being dismantled in preparation for a ceremony on Wednesday to mark the end of the restorations to be led by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic confession. 21 марта 2017 г. Jerusalem Meets Russian Patriarch Kirill Jerusalem, November 10, 2012 The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, who arrived in Jerusalem on Friday, was accompanied by a solemn procession of clerics and laypeople on his way from the Jaffa Gate to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre inside the Old City. Thousands of believers gathered in front of the church, which is the holiest site for Christians across the world, to greet Patriarch Kirill and Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III, who met him. The two patriarchs held a short divine service. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre has for centuries been one of the most important pilgrimage destinations for millions of Christians as the purported site of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Patriarch Theophilos III addressed Patriarch Kirill, for whom it is the first visit to the Holy Land since he was elected to head the Russian Orthodox Church in 2009, with a solemn speech, in which he noted the importance of brotherly relations between the two Orthodox Churches. Patriarch Kirill said each Christian dreams of visiting the Holy Land. “For the first time I have come to the Holy Land to offer prayers on behalf of the entire Russian Church that chose me as its Primate,” the patriarch said, adding that he will in particular pray for peace around the world. During his six-day stay, Patriarch Kirill is expected to visit Christian holy sites in Israel, the Palestinian territories and Jordan. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre earlier in November threatened to close its doors as its bank account was frozen over a debt to an Israeli water company. The church had been exempt from water charges in a tacit agreement with Jerusalem authorities for decades but the Hagihon company, which took over water supply to Jerusalem in the late 1990s, recently demanded payment of a million bill dating back 15 years, including interest. Leonid Beliaev Institute of Archaeology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow Space as relic: on the symbolic meaning of carved stone icons of the Holy Sepulchre This article is devoted to an analysis of certain functions of Old Russian carved stone icons representing the Holy Sepulchre, which were widespread throughout the 13 th –15 th centuries. The number of such icons in the Old Rus’, especially in Novgorod, was notably greater than in Byzantium or in the West. The reason for this is that they served various functions: as amulets for travelers, as insignia for holy orders, or as eulogia, invoking the Holy Places. The author proposes to study these icons as relics related to a special type, namely the architectural copies of the Holy Sepulchre which were especially popular in Europe during the 12 th century. The empty Chamber of the Holy Sepulchre seems to have become the main relic of Christianity. There is no way to portray the emptiness, yet it can be represented with the images of its architectural forms: the outer structure (the Anastasis Rotunda) and the inner structure (the Aedicule). In the medieval Christian world a tradition existed of reproducing one or two of the main characteristics of these structures (their size, round plan, etc.) in order to transfer the sacredness of the Jerusalem shrine to another place. It i s no surpri se that these few details were usually copied with great accuracy and precision.

Flame of faith: Stillwater, OK church welcomes holy fire from Jerusalem Source: Stillwater News Press May 21, 2017 Ukrainian Orthodox worshipers light candles from the Holy Fire brought from Jerusalem in St. Volodymyr Cathedral during the April 15 ceremony of the Holy Fire in Kiev, Ukraine. Photo: AP/Sergei Chuzavkov      Each year, thousands of Christians gather at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem to witness a miracle that sparks a flame of faith they share with believers around the world. The members of St. Nino Equal to the Apostles Orthodox Christian Church in Stillwater are sharing in that miracle this year. It begins in a unique church complex located in the Old City of Jerusalem that surrounds two of the holiest spots in Christianity: Golgotha, the hill where Jesus of Nazareth is said to have been crucified and the rock tomb where he was buried. The site is shared by the Greek Orthodox, Armenian Apostolic, Roman Catholic, Coptic Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox and Syrian Orthodox churches in a sometimes uneasy partnership. The Holy Fire is said to appear miraculously in the tomb of the resurrected Jesus each year on the Saturday before Pascha or Easter, as celebrated according to the Orthodox calendar. The Patriarch of Jerusalem, one of the leaders of the Eastern Orthodox Church, enters the tomb, prays and waits until the Holy Fire manifests itself on the stone where the body of Jesus was wrapped. The faithful light candles from the flame to carry to their homes and churches. They say the flame doesn’t burn when you touch it for about the first 30 minutes and photos taken in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher show smiling people holding their faces and hands in the flame. The flame then begins its journey around the world. Jerusalem clerics slam " brutal " police acts at Easter/Православие.Ru Jerusalem clerics slam " brutal " police acts at Easter Jerusalem, May 12, 2013 Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Metropolitan Theophilos (C) leads Easter service in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem " s Old City May 5, 2013. REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun The heads of Jerusalem " s Orthodox churches on Sunday spoke out against the " brutal treatment " meted out by Israeli police to both priests and pilgrims during an ancient Easter ritual in the Old City. The incident occurred during the centuries-old sacred Holy Fire rite which takes place the day before Easter in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, with police allegedly hitting a priest and several Egyptian diplomats. It sparked a diplomatic incident with Cairo which promptly summoned the Israeli ambassador to protest, with Israel " s deputy foreign minister confirming he had apologised. " We, the Heads of Churches in Jerusalem, watched with sorrowful hearts the horrific scenes of the brutal treatment of our clergy, people, and pilgrims in the Old City of Jerusalem during Holy Saturday, " said a statement from the Orthodox patriarchs and church leaders. " A day of joy and celebration was turned to great sorrow and pain for some of our faithful because they were ill-treated by some Israeli policemen who were present around the gates of the Old City and passages that lead to the Holy Sepulchre. " Footage posted on the Internet showed police manhandling a Coptic priest, with one officer locking the priest " s head in his arm. Police said they had opened an investigation. Although the church leaders acknowledged the need for police to keep order among the thousands of pilgrims and visitors who flock to the annual ceremony, they accused police of " indiscriminately and brutally " beating people. " It is not acceptable that under pretext of security and order, our clergy and people are indiscriminately and brutally beaten, and prevented from entering their churches, monasteries and convents. " The statement called on the Israeli police and the interior ministry " to seriously consider our complaints, to hold responsibility and to condemn all acts of violence against our faithful and the clergy who were ill-treated by the police. " Among the signatories were Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III and Latin Patriarch Fuad Twal, as well as the leaders of all the other Orthodox churches in Jerusalem.
