Participating in the meeting were the deputy chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate archpriest Nikolai Balashov, the rector of the Church of the Holy Martyr George archpriest Feodor Krechetov, the secretary of the DECR for inter-Orthodox relations archpriest Igor Yakimchuk, the spiritual counsellor of the Georgian diaspora in Moscow and cleric of the Georgian Orthodox Church archpriest Kakhaber Gogotishvili, the advisor to the department for the cultural heritage of the city of Moscow and interaction with religious organizations I. N. Kamenskikh, the deputy director of the non- commercial unified service of the Moscow Patriarchy in its capacity as commissioner priest Mikhail Titov and the head of the department for restoration and repairs under the directorate for finance and logistics of the Russian Orthodox Church Ye. G. Inasaridze. For a long time the church building was occupied by the Krasin State College for Technology, Economics and Law. During this period windows were put in the supporting walls of the church building and additional architectural elements were added in between the floors. No repair work has been carried out for several decades. Construction engineers have at present judged the state of the building to be “unsatisfactory and in places in danger of collapse.” In 2014 the church was transferred to the parish as its own property by order of the Moscow city government. The church has the status of Patriarchal Metochion. DECR Communication Service /Patriarchia.ru Календарь ← 7 December 2023 year

Archive His Holiness Patriarch Kirill celebrates Paschal Great Vespers at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour 8 April 2018 year 23:25 On 8 April 2018, the Feast of the Radiant Resurrection of Christ, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia celebrated Paschal Great Vespers at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. Concelebrating with His Holiness was an assembly of hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as representatives of the Local Orthodox Churches to the Moscow Patriarchal Throne, and abbots of the stavropegic monasteries. Praying at the service were hegumenesses of convents, deans of the Moscow church districts and rectors of Moscow churches, clerics of Moscow and the Moscow region, members of the Moscow parish councils, staff members of the Synodal departments, representatives of the Orthodox youth organizations, and many pilgrims and parishioners. By tradition, used during Great Vespers was the old Gospel Book that dates back to the time of the Empress Yelizaveta Petrovna. It was bequeathed by the late Metropolitan Pitirim (Nechayev) and transferred from the Monastery of St Joseph of Volokolamsk to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. With the blessing of the late Patriarch Alexy II, this Gospel Book is brought from the sanctuary only twice a year, during Great Vespers on the feast days of the Nativity of Christ and of Pascha. After the Paschal Vespers, Metropolitan Juvenaly of Krutitsy and Kolomna greeted His Holiness Patriarch Kirill on behalf of the Holy Synod, worshippers and the plenitude of the Russian Orthodox Church, saying in particular: “For two thousand years lies and slander have been spread about the Nativity and Resurrection of Christ. However, nowadays I, deeply touched, want to say that with your blessing the preaching of the Risen Lord reaches even small children. Yesterday I heard a moving story about a child who had returned home after a meeting with a priest and said to his parents, “Mom and dad, do not take offense, I love you, love you very much, but I love the Lord more.” “This, Your Holiness, is the result of the missionary preaching activitites entrusted by you not only to clergymen, but also to educators. Your Holiness, allow us to wish you God’s abundant help in your Primatial ministry. And may the faith of Christ flourish and never die down in our homeland.” Greeting His Holiness Patriarch Kirill were also representatives of the Orthodox youth organizations, hierarchs, representatives of the Local Orthodox Churches, clerics and laypeople. The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church delivered a Primatial homily and blessed the worshippers. After the service, a concert took place near the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, organized by the Moscow Orthodox youth. Patriarchal Press Service Календарь ← 7 December 2023 year

Some might point to certain Roman Catholic saints, or holiness movements within Protestantism—spurred by the likes of John Wesley or Jonathan Edwards—which perhaps acknowledge the primacy of purifying the heart—of holiness—in knowing God. While I would applaud such insight from western theologians and western saints where it occurs, separated from the wellspring of the life of the Church, and with epistemological and doctrinal foundations that are still rooted in scholasticism, this truth has only ever been fleetingly and dimly glimpsed in the post-schism west. The precise method for success is handed down by those who have attained the light, and it can’t be stumbled upon in its fullness apart from that living tradition. Met. Hierotheos also notes, writing about St. Gregory’s thought in distinction from Barlaam’s: The witness of the saints is not intellectual and conjectural, but empirical… Because they have freed their nous from reasoning, passions and environmental conditions, the nous has been illuminated by divine Grace and guided to the vision of God. ( St. Gregory Palamas as a Hagiorite, pg. 29) With such being the conditions for seeing God—and therefore for true knowledge about God—these are the means by which all the great Orthodox Saints obtained deification. Founded on principles foreign to the apostolic, patristic, living tradition of the Church, Barlaam’s approach to theology necessarily ends in agnosticism. Founded on Christ, the Apostles, and the undivided witness of the Orthodox Church, the teaching of St. Gregory Palamas provides the only way to come into direct, living contact with the “energies” of God—which are God himself. Without warning residential districts along Lenin Avenue near the central market, Pobedy (“Victory”) Avenue and Gagarin Street as well as Maysky Village and the modern house district were shelled with Grad missile launchers, reports the Horlivka and Sloviansk Diocese’s website. Residential houses were demolished, and roads and streetcar (tram) rails destroyed. In spite of the wartime situation in the city, the maternity hospital is operating in normal mode, the women in labor and babies have not been evacuated. Two more shells fired by the Ukrainian Army exploded on the territory of the 2 nd City Hospital: one in the yard between the maternity home and the morgue building, the other just in front of the entrance of the admissions office of the main hospital building. As a result of a shell hit, the Church of the Great-Martyr Panteleimon, situated at the 2 nd City Hospital, was partially damaged. According to the hospital church rector, Archpriest David Solomonishvili, the shell fell near the streetcar (tram) tracks in Gagarin Street near the church. The church façade on the side of the sanctuary as well as the stone church fencing was partially damaged, the church windows were blown out by the explosion. The shock from the blast blew out the bell tower doors. One piece of shrapnel got into the altar. Michael Prokurat, Alexander Golitzin, Michael D. Peterson Скачать epub pdf SAINTS SAINTS. “Saint,” from the Latin sanctus (Greek, hagios; Church Slavic, sviatii), refers to a person recognized by the Church as having partaken during his or her lifetime of the quality of God’s holiness (q.v.), a “holy man” or “holy woman.” The expression, “the saints,” is used of Christians in general by Paul, and Orthodoxy (q.v.) maintains that all believers, by virtue of their having put on Christ in Baptism (q.v.), are at least potentially “holy ones,” temples and manifestations of God’s action in the world. The popular veneration of certain believers who had clearly manifested God’s holiness appears very early in the history of the Church. The veneration of the saints is at least as old as the cult of the martyr (q.v.), and was extended in the 4th c. to the monks, the “ascetics” in the current Orthodox categorization of saints, and to the great teaching bishops, who are called “illuminators” or “luminaries.” Other categories of saints were added later, among them: fools in Christ (q.v.) (saloi, iurodev’i), unmercenary physicians, equals to the apostles (meaning great missionaries), military saints (usually martyrs from the Roman army), and, uniquely in Russia, the “passion-bearers” (innocent sufferers). The saints are believed to be active members of the family of the Church, intercessors and protectors, though all of them derive their ministry in and through-and as witnesses to-the Risen Christ. They are omnipresent in Orthodox Church life. No child is baptized without receiving the name of a patron saint, and in most Orthodox cultures it is the child’s saint’s day that is celebrated as in the West one celebrates birthdays. The Synaxarion, or collection of saints’ lives for every day of the year, is read from at morning services in monasteries. The relics (q.v.) of the saints are venerated, the subject of pilgrimage (q.v.), and transferred or “translated,” when such occurs, with great pomp and ceremony. Metropolitan Hilarion celebrates the Day of All Saints at Moscow Representation of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria Moscow, June 8, 2015      On June 7, 2015, the Day of All Saints, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate department for external church relations (DECR), led the parishioners of the church of All Saint-at-Kulishki, the Moscow Representation of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria, in celebrating the Divine Liturgy. The liturgy was celebrated in Greek and Church Slavonic. After the liturgy the DECR chairman was greeted by Metropolitan Athanasios of Kyrenia, rector of the Representation, who said in particular, ‘The fact that you have accepted our invitation and our common celebration of the great Sacrament do not just point out the good relations between the Patriarchates of Alexandria and Moscow but, more important, make it visible that the holy Churches of God are bound up by inseparable unity, comprising One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church’.      In his response, Metropolitan Hilarion spoke about the Day of All Saints as a feast commemorating hundreds of thousands of people who, following Christ, took the path of sanctity. The Lord Jesus Christ, he said, came out against the understanding of sanctity as one’s isolation from society and the need to observe a whole bulk of prescriptions and statutes. The Lord told very simple things to people: ‘the kingdom of God is within you’, and the spiritual struggle for sanctity is waged within a person. Speaking about martyrs and confessors who followed Christ on the way to sanctity in times of persecution against the Church, Metropolitan Hilarion pointed to the fact that the Church has again become persecuted today in the Middle East, where Christianity was born and in North Africa, where Christians have become a persecuted minority. ‘We pray every day that the Lord may give us peaceful times. We pray for all Local Orthodox Churches and especially for such old Patriarchates as that of Alexandria founded by St. Mark, asking the Lord that He may preserve and multiply Christian faith in the countries in which it is subjected to oppression and persecution today’. Addressing Metropolitan Athanasios, His Eminence Hilarion thanked him for the opportunity to celebrate together and to pray for His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodore, saying, ‘ We know and love him. He used to serve in Odessa as representative of the Patriarch of Alexandria to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. He has covered a long and difficult path and founded a great number of church communities in various African countries… I rejoice in the fact that the spiritual ties between our two Churches are developing and strengthening today including through your efforts’. 8 июня 2015 г. Fragment A , Dura Europos (circa AD 235) Despite being separated in time by at least two centuries, the anaphoras of both the apostolic Church in the first century, and that of this Syrian house church in the 3rd century are strikingly similar. They certainly reflect the same tradition of the Eucharist, and, as Irenaeus has asserted, the Eucharist is where the heart of our faith and theology begins (and ends). Similarities between these and the Judaic blessings for food and wine should be noted, as well. The Christians of both the Didache and 3rd century were certainly assembling in the large homes of wealthy believers, but the detailed instructions for the rites of Baptism and the Eucharist in both sources indicates a community gathering for a purpose that is quite distinct from a simple Bible study, lecture, and sing-along. So while evangelical groups in our present day might be attempting to emulate the house churches of the “New Testament” church, it can be demonstrated with great clarity that these ancient Christian communities were gathered together primarily for the celebration of the Mysteries of Christ: Baptism and the Eucharist. Incidentally, I wouldn’t expect to find any Iconography in a present day house church, either. If a Christian today wants to assemble in a way that is comparable to these ancient and “New Testament” era house churches, the best way to do so is within the apostolic Church itself, where these traditions have been preserved for centuries; and that church is the Orthodox Church. It is hampered by remarks such as these: " a seemingly obvious reference to the Eucharist " , " demonstrated with great clarity " This kind of evidence suggests and hints, no more. George Mims 14 января 2014, 06:00 Frankly, this is an essential NEW look to an OLD way of doing the Body of Christ assembled to teach, baptize, preach, celebrate the Holy Communion.....and in spaces designed for each of these VERY DIFFERENT gatherings. We " ve been talking about this in the Episcopal/Anglican Church for a LONG time and done little to activate this in our building of new church " s where there " s no absolute tie to the past edifices and ways of gathering.

Patriarch Kirill’s condolences over the death of Patriarch Shenouda III of the Coptic Church Moscow, 20 march 2012 To the Holy Synod of the Coptic Church Your Eminences and Graces, Dear Brothers in Christ: With profound grief I have learnt about the demise of His Holiness Patriarch Shenouda III who has carried out zealous service as Patriarch of the Coptic Church for over forty years. The entire Christian world has been bereaved of an outstanding theologian and inspired preacher who for so long headed the confessor Church. The deceased First Hierarch has rendered truly great services both to the Coptic Church and to the entire Christendom. His tireless efforts to build the church life of the Coptic diaspora and to struggle for the rights of the Christian minority in Egypt, his sincere search for mutual understanding with other Christian Churches, his numerous theological works and sermons have gained him well-deserved authority throughout the world. We give a high value to the works of the deceased Patriarch Shenouda III. Remembering with love and warmth our last meeting during my visit to Egypt in April 2010, I testify to the sincere and cordial attitude of the deceased to the Russian Orthodox Church. Our Church, on her part, has invariably and consistently supported Egyptian Christians who have been systematically subjected to persecution and respectfully recognized the contribution of the Coptic Church to the preservation of traditional Egyptian monasticism and spiritual culture. I am convinced of the need to continue our cooperation for the sake of establishing peace and justice in the Middle East and in the world and protecting the rights of Christians wherever they are violated. May the All-Merciful Lord give rest to the soul of His servant His Holiness Patriarch Shenouda. Eternal memory be to him! Archive His Holiness Patriarch Kirill and Primate of Orthodox Church in America hold telephone conversation 22 December 2020 year 09:41 On December 21, 2020, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia spoke on the phone with His Beatitude Tikhon, Archbishop of Washington, Metropolitan of All America and Canada. The Primates exchanged greetings on the occasion of the upcoming feast of the Nativity of Christ, which the Orthodox Church in America will celebrate on December 25, according to the Revised Julian calendar. During the conversation, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill shared with His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon warm memories of his visits to America, including Alaska. As His Holiness noted, the year 2020 marks a jubilee: fifty years ago, on April 10, 1970, Patriarch Alexy I of Moscow and All Russia, of blessed memory, signed the Tomos of Autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in America. His Holiness Patriarch Kirill invited His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon to visit Russia when the sanitary and epidemiological situation allows it. Having expressed condolences over the demise of the former OCA Primate, Metropolitan Theodosius (Lazor), who fell asleep in the Lord on October 19, 2020, the Primate of the Russian Church shared recollections of his meetings with Metropolitan Theodosius over the years. His Holiness also offered condolences to His Beatitude Tikhon over one more loss that had befallen the Orthodox Church in America: Archbishop David of Sitka and Alaska passed away in November 2020. His Holiness mentioned, in particular, that this hierarch had been among those accompanying His Beatitude Tikhon on his visit to Moscow in 2019. His Beatitude Tikhon expressed condolences over the demise of Metropolitan Feofan of Kazan and Tatarstan, with whom he had been personally acquainted. During the conversation, His Holiness Kirill noted with gratitude the position of the Synod of the Orthodox Church in America on the situation in Ukraine. The Primates discussed how the Russian Orthodox Church and the Orthodox Church in America were coping with the restrictions caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Among other issues raised during the conversation was the completion of restoration works at the Church of St.Catherine the Great Martyr in-the-Fields – the OCA Representation in Moscow. However, it does not mean that Alexandrian Patriarch Theodoros has entered upon the path of ecumenism—nothing is said about Orthodoxy having union with other Christian communities in Africa.
