In Corfu, western Greece, arrived at 11:00 am today Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who responded to the invitation of Archbishop Nektarios of Corfu, Paxos and Diapontia Islands to visit the island as part of the celebration of its patron saint, St. Spyridon, on this coming Friday, December 12. Photo: http://greece.greekreporter.com/ The head of the Orthodox Church was formally received by local authorities, church representatives and numerous citizens, schools and the island’s infamous municipal philharmonic band. Upon his arrival, the Ecumenical Patriarch expressed his feelings, saying that he was very moved, and highlighted that Corfu acts as crossroads of people and civilizations, neighboring to the west with Italy and to the east with Albania. He noted that the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s mission is vital for the entire world and not just for Orthodoxy, sending a message of “ecumenical rapprochement and cooperation.” Soon after his arrival, Bartholomew visited the St. Spyridon Cathedral, where the Saint’s sacred relics are being kept. Numerous events have been scheduled during the Ecumenical Patriarch’s four-day visit to the Greek island. The last official visit of the Primate of the Orthodox Church to Corfu took place 51 years ago, in 1963, by the late Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras. Verkhovnaya Rada Speaker Andrey Parubiy Verkhovnaya Rada Speaker Andrey Parubiy has invited Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to Ukraine. “I invite the Ecumenical Patriarch to Ukraine,” Parubiy said in Kiev on Friday at a meeting with Archbishop Daniel of Pamphylia from the United States and Bishop Hilarion of Edmonton from Canada, the exarchs of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Ukraine. He asked the exarchs to extend this invitation to the Ecumenical Patriarch. The visit of the Ecumenical Patriarch “would be a big sign, a big symbol for Ukraine and the Verkhovnaya Rada,” Parubiy said, adding that he hopes it is decided to grant the Ukrainian Orthodox Church autocephaly. The exarchs said the final steps remain to be made on the issue of granting a tomos and spoke in support of further cooperation with the Ukrainian parliament. “I think His Beatitude […] will visit Ukraine and will also be present in the Verkhovnaya Rada, which made this historical decision [the request to the Patriarch to grant the Ukrainian Orthodox Church autocephaly],” Bishop Hilarion of Edmonton said. In early September, the Ecumenical Patriarchate appointed two exarchs to Kiev to prepare for the granting of autocephaly to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. They arrived soon after. Some people accuse the Orthodox Moscow Patriarchate of hurriedly, artificially and, from the ecclesiological perspective, unjustifiably breaking off eucharistic communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, and later with the Churches of Greece and Alexandria which joined Constantinople, or at least with those bishops who consented to concelebrating with clerics from the schismatic communities of the Ukrainian Church. Those who accuse the Moscow Patriarchate do not recall or do not try to recall that the first teacher for it in this affair was in the Ecumenical Patriarch. We shall never forget the pompous parade at the Phanar, broadcast live to the whole world, attended by not only the Ecumenical Patriarch, but by the great multitude of metropolitans of the Ecumenical Throne and at which the archbishop of Athens Christodoulos of blessed memory was punished by having communion broken off with him. And for one reason only: the ever-memorable archbishop had dared to call a Council of the Church of Greece at which, without the Patriarch’s confirmation, there were elected three new metropolitans to the dioceses of the so-called “new lands”. The Moscow Patriarchate broke off eucharistic communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate because the latter had violated the holy canons, that is, as we have demonstrated above, he had unilaterally interfered in the affairs of the Ukrainian Church, which is not part of its canonical territory, and the icing on the cake of this violation was the uncanonical granting of the Tomos of autocephaly to the schismatic structure of Ukraine. Therefore, the decision by the Moscow Patriarchate to break off eucharistic communion with the three Churches of Constantinople, Alexandria and Greece was correct and justified, for it was based on the holy canons and is consonant with the centuries-old practice of the Church. What is most alarming of all in the events surrounding the Ukrainian church issue is the growing conviction that it will become an ecclesiological problem on a greater scale. The ambitions of the Ecumenical Patriarch today extend over the entirety of Ukraine: in essence, he is laying claim to the right to intervene in the internal life of all the Local Orthodox Patriarchates and autocephalous Churches. Unfortunately, the newly-appeared theory that the Primate of Constantinople is the head of all the Churches receives support and is aggravated by those closest to the Ecumenical Throne.

The Holy Synod discussed in particular and at length, the ecclesiastical mater of Ukraine in the presence of His Excellency Archbishop Daniel of Pamphilon and His Grace Bishp Ilarion of Edmonon, Patriarchal Exarchs to Ukraine, and following extensive deliberations decreed: “ First , to renew the decision already made, that the Ecumenical Patriarchate proceed to the granting of autocephaly to the Church of Ukraine; “ Second , to reestablish at this moment the stavropegion of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Kiev—one of its many starvorpegion in Ukraine that existed there always; “ Third , to accept and review the petitions of appeal of Philaret Denisenko and Makary (Maletich) and their followers who found themselves in schism not for dogmatic reasons, in accordance with the canonical prerogatives of the Patriarchate of Constantinople to receive such petitions by hierarchs and other clergy of all the autocephalous Churches. Thus, the above mentioned have been canonically reinstated to their hierarchical or priestly rank, and their faithful have been restored to communion with the Church; “ Fourth , to revoke the legal binding of the Synodal letter of the year 1686, issued for the circumstances of that time, which granted the right through economia to the Patriarch of Moscow to ordain the Metropolitan of Kiev elected by the clergy-laity assembly of his eparchy, who would commemorate the Ecumenical Patriarch as the first hierarch at any celebration, proclaiming and affirming his canonical dependence to the Mother Church of Constantinople;

The Divine Liturgy, marking the Dormition of the Theotokos, was held at the historic Sümela Monastery in the northern province of Trabzon on Saturday, with Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I praying for an end to the recent violence in the country. Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I officiated a service at the historical Sümela Monastery in the northern Turkish province of Trabzon on Saturday. (Photo: Cihan) “It is our biggest and primary wish that no more blood is shed, no more young people die and no more mothers, fathers, spouses and children come to grief,” Bartholomew said following the service. Violence has dramatically escalated in Turkey over the past weeks. Turkey launched strikes against Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) targets in Syria and terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) targets in Turkey and northern Iraq as part of what it calls a two-pronged war against the terrorist groups. Dozens of troops and police officers were killed in the recent violence. The violence has effectively shelved a settlement process that got under way in 2012 and an accompanying cease-fire. This is the sixth time that a religious service has been held at the Sümela Monastery in the history of the Turkish Republic. Since 2010, the government has allowed a church service to be held there once a year in a gradual loosening of restrictions on religious expression. The service was officiated by Patriarch Bartholomew I — as in the past five years. Code for blog Since you are here… …we do have a small request. The reconstructed church of Agios Voukolos is the only Christian Orthodox church of the big city of Izmir (Smyrna) in Turkey that survived the destruction of 1922. The church will reopen to the public as a place of worship and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has been scheduled to perform a liturgy in the church on Friday, February 6. Agios Voukolos – the patron Saint of Izmir – is celebrated on February 6. The church is located in the district of Basmane and it was recently renovated by the Izmir municipality. Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia says plans to visit Abkhazia with Ecumenical Patriarch Tbilisi, May 23, Interfax – Constantinople recognizes the jurisdiction of the Georgian Orthodox Church in Abkhazia, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia said on Thursday. “We had a meeting with the Ecumenical Patriarch. We considered various issues and accord emerged on everything. I am grateful to His Holiness for this support. He said repeatedly that Constantinople recognized the jurisdiction of the Georgian Orthodox Church in Abkhazia and, with God’s help, everything will end peacefully,” the Georgian Patriarch said. Patriarch Ilia II said that it was planned to organize his visit to Abkhazia in the company of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. The Georgian patriarch will also introduce during his visit to Sukhum his personal representative among clerics, natives of Abkhazia. “All local Orthodox Churches and the entire world recognize Abkhazia as a part of the Georgian Church, a canonical part. Everyone admits this and so all issues existing in Abkhazia are to be definitely considered by the Georgian Orthodox Church and its Synod. We have agreed that the Georgian Church would do everything so priests came there. I am Metropolitan of Tskhum-Abkhazia and Bichvinta and I have to go there as well to calm down the situation there,” Patriarch Ilia II said. “We have agreed with the Ecumenical patriarch that he would help us with this and everything would be fine. The Russian Church recognized Abkhazia as part of the Georgian Church. The church problems of Abkhazia are the result of political issues. And we have to do everything so that political fights and disagreements do not reflect on church life. On the contrary, Church should do everything so that peace comes to our country,” the Georgian Patriarch said. Georgian Minister for Reintegration, Paata Zakareishvili, commented on the patriarch’s statements on Thursday. “The state should not interfere with the issue of Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia’s visit to Abkhazia. His Holiness is in Constantinople, where he has met with the Ecumenical Patriarch. Naturally, it would come to Abkhazia and he probably reached an agreement. The visit of the Patriarch to Abkhazia will take place upon a certain agreement. This is not a political structure. They have their own relations. If this happens, I will welcome this and state channels should not be involved to interfere with the church activities,” the minister said.

NEW YORK – The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America has received today the text of an important announcement from the Ecumenical Patriarchate about the Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church, which is presented below: ECUMENICAL PATRIARCHATE Communiqué An extraordinary session of the Sacred Endemousa Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate took place today under the presidency of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in order to review the progress of the Holy and Great Council to be convened by the grace of God in just a few days. The Sacred Endemousa Synod was informed with surprise and wonder of the positions and opinions expressed recently by some sister Orthodox Churches and, after evaluating these, ascertained that no institutional framework allows for the revision of the Synodal process already under way. Therefore, it is expected that the Primates of the most holy Orthodox Churches will bring, in accordance with the Organization and Working Procedure of the Holy and Great Council, any “proposals to amend, correct, or append the Synodal texts that were unanimously approved by the Pan-Orthodox Preconciliar Meetings and by Synaxes of the Primates pertaining to the agenda topics” (see Article 11) for final formulation and decision during the sessions of the Holy and Great Council, with the invocation and inspiration of the All-Holy Spirit. The Ecumenical Patriarchate, which bears the first responsibility for safeguarding the unity of Orthodoxy, calls all to rise to the occasion and participate, on the pre-determined dates, in the sessions of the Holy and Great Council, as was decided and signed on a pan-Orthodox level both by the Primates during the Sacred Synaxes, as well as by those authorized by each Delegation during the entire lengthy preparatory process of the Council. At the Ecumenical Patriarchate, on the sixth of June, 2016 From the Chief Secretariat As it is evident from the Announcement of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Holy and Great Synod of all the Autocephalous Orthodox Churches will take place as scheduled, with the possibility for discussion and decision on the various views that were recently raised.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, who holds a primacy of honor in Eastern Orthodoxy, recalled the 50th anniversary of Blessed Paul VI’s historic visit to Istanbul—the first visit by a Roman Pontiff to the See of Constantinople in over a millennium. Photo: http://www.thetablet.co.uk Blessed Paul VI and Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras had first met in Jerusalem in January 1964. Three years later, on July 25, 1967, Pope Paul visited the Phanar (Fener), where the patriarchal cathedral is located, setting a precedent followed by subsequent popes. Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, in turn, visited the Vatican in October 1967. “Although their initiatives have not had a great impact on the media, they remain revolutionary milestones for the development of Christianity,” Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew wrote in an essay published on the front page of  L’Osservatore Romano.  He added that the meetings “remind us of the enduring power of charity and dialogue.” Code for blog Since you are here… …we do have a small request.
