Much more than half the lay members of the patriarchate, for example, now reside in North America, and many of the Greek Orthodox there are so thoroughly Americanized that some of them have forgotten their ancestral language. The Phanar continues to exercise jurisdictional oversight over several Slavonic rite dioceses in “exile,” Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, and Albanian, which put themselves under the patriarchal protection in the difficult times following the large flight westwards from communist oppression in the early part of the 20th century. The question of the continuing need for “exile” is a current point of interOrthodox tension. The patriarchate today continues a policy, evident among its leaders from the beginning of the 20th century, of encouraging the senior hierarchs of world Orthodoxy to meet regularly and intercommunicate on wide levels. It has sponsored Orthodoxy’s international dialogues with other non-Orthodox Churches, and despite frequent shrill cries from some of the most traditionalist Orthodox critics of its behavior, it has done so with enormous wisdom, charity, and reserve; never rushing into statements or deeds that it would have to regret or later withdraw. Its model in ecumenical communication has been to establish a “dialogue of love.” The present Patriarch Bartholomew I is an internationally renowned voice for preservation of the world’s ecosystem, and a strong and respected moral teacher of international stature on issues of compassion and justice. Proposal out to hold Pan-Orthodox Council in Geneva instead of Istanbul Istanbul, January 9, 2016      According to the Romfea agency, Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople says that there can be no justification for nonparticipation by any Local Orthodox Churches in the coming Pan-Orthodox Council. Romfea has also reported the Council’s previously planned venue of Istanbul, may be changed because representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church will probably not be able to come to Phanar after the Russian government recommended Russian citizens to refrain from going to Turkey due to the strain in relations between the Russian Federation and Turkey, reports Pravlife.org with reference to Sedmitza.ru . Meanwhile, Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens and All Greece, primate of the Church of Greece, will not be able to participate at the Council because he is currently at variance with primate of the Church of Constantinople Bartholomew I. There are also problems with participation by representatives of the Orthodox Church of Antioch in the Council inasmuch as Eucharistic communion between the Patriarchate of Antioch and the Patriarchate of Jerusalem was broken off due to the problem of Qatar. The Jerusalem Patriarchate has opened a church in Qatar, which traditionally falls under the canonical jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Antioch. After Jerusalem did not responded to Antioch’s requests to remedy the situation, Antioch broke off communion with Jerusalem. Pravoslavie.ru 12 января 2016 г. Although I am Greek, I firmly believe Moscow is the Third Rome. Russia is the largest Orthodox country and for centuries has been protecting Eastern Christians. Russia is the only great power that cares for Christians in the East and Moscow should be praised for seeking to defend the Christians of Syria. The Church of Constantinople is First Among Equals with primacy of honor. No one disputes this. The accusation that the Russians are trying to take over is a western tactic aimed at dividing the Greeks from the Russians. Read the books " The Orthodox Church and Independent Greece 1821-1852 " by Charles Frazee and " Orthodoxy and the West " by Christos Yannaras to see how the West has undermined the independence of Greece by attempting to destroy Greek-Russian relations. Many heroes of the Greek War of Independence such as Theodoros Kolokotronis who was the leader of the Pro Russian Party in Greece were imprisoned by the German King that was installed in Greece by the Western powers. The Orthodox need brotherhood and unity under the leadership of Russia which is defending Christianity from genocide in the Middle East. Ted

" The establishment of the Theological School of the Church of Cyprus comes at a time when our country is in need of shining examples, " said President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades who inaugurated the School together with Archbishop Chrysostomos II on the grounds of the Archbishopric. Archbishop Chrysostomos described a particularly glorious day for the Church of Cyprus, noting that the establishment of the Theological School serves a growing need of the Church of Cyprus to cultivate its own Theological Education. " We express joy and jubilation because we see our ardent desire, " he said, " fulfilled. " " The theological school will aim to promote religious beliefs, to educate about Christ and to instil in the hearts of the clergy the desired ethos, " he added. " It will promote scientific education and solemn life and the cultivation of critical thinking. " President Anastasiades said that the Theological School of the Church of Cyprus was " founded during a difficult and crucial time for the future of our country. " He said it comes at a time when our country is now in need of shining examples. It will remedy its moral standing and regain its freedom and dignity at all levels. The President pledged that the government will stand by the new school and support the Church of Cyprus in this effort. In his message, which was read during the ceremony, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew said that he was deeply moved and satisfied to be informed of the decision of the Church of Cyprus to found a theological school. The Ecumenical Patriarchate, as guardian of the living theological truth, looks forward to the efforts of the Theological School of Cyprus. He also congratulated Archbishop Chrysostomos and the Holy Synod and wished the school to become a centre of theological education and initiation of students in the spirit and ethos of the Orthodox Church. In his address, the Director of the Theological School, Deacon Kyprianos Kountouris, said it was imperative to establish a school which aims to maintain university-level standards. He noted that the school begins with a four-year undergraduate theology programme that was adopted by the competent bodies of the Ministry of Education and Culture and this year is offered to twenty-five students. During the first year of study there will be fourteen classes taught by ten teachers, two of whom will be visiting professors from theological schools of Greece and Lebanon as well as the wider academic world of Europe. Tweet Нравится St. Raphael’s seminary thesis now available in English: “The True Significance of Sacred Tradition and Its Great Worth” Moscow, February 3, 2017 The seminary theological thesis of St. Raphael (Hawaweeny) of Brooklyn, The True Significance of Sacred Tradition and Its Great Worth: A Nineteenth-Century Orthodox Response to Roman Catholic and Protestant Missionaries in the East , is now available for the first time in English. The site of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America notes that St. Raphael wrote the thesis while a student at the Theological School of the Ecumenical Patriarchate at Halki. The saint is much loved in America as a great missionary, becoming the first Orthodox bishop consecrated in North America. He founded numerous parishes and struggled to raise the level of parochial education in America, to keep the faithful within the saving enclosure of the Church. Orthodox Christians of St. Raphael’s time (1860–1915) in the Ottoman Empire were constantly exposed to the proselytization efforts of Catholic and Protestant missionaries. St. Raphael’s thesis is a response to their efforts and claims and represents “an interesting and active dialogue with Western Christianity.” His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew writes in his foreword: Much of the cause for our personal delight in receiving and reading this book derives from the wonderful and moving insights that it provides in returning our memory and heart to a time when this unique Theological School still vibrantly functioned, when the value of learning classical and foreign languages was held in high regard, and students of theology engaged with sources both inside and outside of their traditions. The volume, translated from Greek by Fr. Patrick Viscuso, also includes the seminary’s 1874 regulations and a contemporary account of life at the school. St. Raphael was canonized in 2000 at St. Tikhon’s Monastery in Waymart, PA. 3 февраля 2017 г. Подпишитесь на рассылку Православие.Ru Рассылка выходит два раза в неделю:

Serbian patriarch visits Albania, nationalists protest Tirana, June 2, 2014 Patriarch Irinej (Tanjug, file) Leaders of Orthodox Christian churches - including a delegation of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) headed by Patriarch Irinej - were in Albania on Sunday. They consecrated the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in the country " s capital, Tirana. The consecration service - a major event for all Orthodox churches - was led by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, Albania " s Balkanweb reports. Also taking part in the service were the patriarchs of Jerusalem and Serbia, the archbishops of Cyprus, Athens, Warsaw and Tirana, as well as representatives of the patriarchs of Moscow, Bulgaria, Georgia and Antiochia. According to a statement of the Albanian Orthodox Church, the consecration of the cathedral is not only a special blessing for Albania " s Orthodox Christians, but also a reaffirmation of Orthodox Christianity worldwide. The complex of the new Resurrection of Christ Cathedral, situated in downtown Tirana, includes the Chapel of the Nativity of Jesus Christ, a bell tower and the Cathedral center, and symbolizes the rebirth of the autocephalous Albanian Orthodox Church. A youth festival concert outside the cathedral, scheduled for Sunday evening, will be attended by Albanian President Bujar Nishani, Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta, Prime Minister Edi Rama and opposition leader Lulzim Basha, who is also mayor of Tirana. Basha is scheduled to receive the leaders of the Orthodox churches on June 2. Nationalists protest Members of Albania " s nationalist Red and Black Alliance on Sunday gathered in protest against the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) delegation that attended the ceremony on Sunday. The delegation, headed by Patriarch Irinej, also included Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral, who is also the archbishop of Cetinje. The police arrested several protesters, detaining six of them, Albania " s Balkanweb reported quoting Alliance activists. Alliance activists opposed the participation of the SPC dignitaries as they said the church " ignores Albanian history and considers Kosovo to be part of Serbia, " and also believes that " Serbia is better off without European Union membership than without Kosovo. " They particularly blame Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama for inviting SPC representatives to attend the consecration of the cathedral, which they see as " an unprecedented move. " The nationalist Red and Black Alliance advocates " a uniform Albanian state where everyone is equally Albanian by ethnicity and there are no divisions into a majority and minority, " Tanjug reported. The Alliance has maintained close ties with Kosovo " s radical Self-Determination movement, led by Albin Kurti, Albanian media have reported. 5 июня 2014 г. Sliding into ecumenism is becoming more dangerous, Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus warns/Православие.Ru Sliding into ecumenism is becoming more dangerous, Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus warns Piraeus, July 1, 2015 Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus has once again harshly criticized the ecumenical initiatives of primate of the Roman Catholic Church. His statement on this subject was published by the Greek Romfea portal:      “Sliding into ecumenism is becoming more dangerous. Now there are attempts to abrogate the Holy Canons. Heretics are suggesting the variants of our destruction, while some of our clerics holding high positions of authority are, unfortunately, discussing them! A new “bomb” was recently exploded by heresiarch of the Vatican, Pope Francis I, who suggested to establish a common date for celebrating Easter by all Christians: Orthodox and heretics. And this has been the subject of extensive discussion in the society since then! This spiritual paralytic from the ancient and noble See of the Patriarch of the West is suggesting “to throw into the rubbish bin” the holy decree of the First Oecumenical Council (held in 325) which unequivocally established the method of calculation the date of Easter, the Feast of the Feasts. This canon does not provide for any further changes, but, instead, is to obeyed precisely. According to the information that we have, Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople has given an interview to the journalist Andrea Tornielli (the La Stampa Italian newspaper) in which, among other things, the patriarch comments on the encyclical of Pope Francis I on ecology. But the journalist’s final question on the unified date for celebrating Easter was a true revelation. Here it is: “Pope Francis has also proposed to agree on the concrete common date of Easter. Do you agree with this?” And the First Hierarch of Constantinople replied: “For already more than half a century the Orthodox Church has been discussing the possibility of a common date of Easter, the Feast of the Feasts. But in reality as part of the preparation for holding the All-Orthodox Meeting, scheduled for next year in Istanbul, various variants on the scientific and liturgical levels have been examined. Nevertheless, in recent years, and especially following the fall of “the iron curtain”, certain forces in some of national Local Orthodox Churches, are, unfortunately, opposing this idea of the reform. Beyond doubt, this agreement on the concrete and unified date for celebration of Easter would be important especially for Christians living in America, the Western Europe and Oceania. But no matter whether you personally encourage this idea or disagree with it, this proposal must be accepted by all the Autocephalous Orthodox Churches, that we may not endanger the unity of the Orthodox world”.
