Archive Synod of Ukrainian Orthodox Church reports pressure put by Ukrainian state authorities on episcopate, clergy and faithful of canonical Church 8 December 2018 year 11:34 Ukrainian state bodies are carrying out groundless criminal prosecutions and putting pressure on the episcopate, clergy and faithful of the canonical Church with the aim to make them attend the so-called uniting council, the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church stated at its meeting on December 7, 2018 at the Kiev-Pechersk Laura of the Dormition. In its decisions, the Synod also stated that such actions represent ‘a violation of the constitutional rights of the Ukrainian citizens to freedom of faith’.  The Bishops’ Council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church on November 13, 2018, has been followed by quite a number of events that can be explicitly interpreted as facts of pressure put on representatives of the canonical Church. In particular, bishops have been summoned for ‘talks’ to the Ukrainian Security Service and obstacles have been created for crossing the state border. On November 23, 2018, the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice revoked its decision on the state registration of the right to own buildings at the Pochaev Laura – the Cathedral of the Dormition, Cathedral of the Trinity, monastic cells, belfry, Bishop’s House and Holy Gates. A few days later, the Cabinet of Ministers revoked its Instruction of July 17, 2003, ‘On Exclusion of the Pochaev Laura of the Holy Dormition as a part of the Kremenets-Pochaev State Historical-Architectural Preserve’. On November 28, for the first time in 30 years, a Ukrainian Ministry of Culture commission inspected the cultural valuables kept in the Kiev-Pechersk Laura of the Dormition. Two days later, law-enforcement bodies carried out a search in the territory of the Kiev-Pecherks Laura’s farm at the village of Voronkov, Borispol district, Kiev region. On December 1, summons for questioning at the Ukrainian Security Service were received by twenty clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church diocese of Rovno and Sarny.

Remembering Our Leaders: 1957–1983 Скачать epub pdf Содержание Coming to the seminary The seminary Metropolitan Leonty Fr Schmemann and Prof Verhovskoy Dr Arseniev, Dr Kesich and Fr Meyendorff Others of our leaders     As St Vladimir " s celebrates its 60 th Anniversary in 2003, Dean Erickson asked me to reminisce about my firsthand experience of the seminary " s middle years. I do so, gladly and gratefully, inspired by the scriptural command to «remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God; consider the outcome of their life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever» (Hebrews 13:7–8). by Fr Thomas Hopko, Dean Emeritus 2003 is a landmark year for St Vladimir " s Seminary in several respects. Most significant is that October of this year marks the 65 th anniversary of the seminary " s founding. Other momentous anniversaries marked by 2003 are: the 20 th anniversary of both the consecration of the seminary " s chapel (in May) and Fr Schmemann " s death (in December). It is coincidentally the 40 th anniversary of the first class to graduate at the seminary " s Crestwood location, a class of which I was a member in June of 1963. Coming to the seminary I heard about St Vladimir " s in 1956 from a friend, Frank Kulik, now a psychiatrist in Jackson, Mississippi and a staunch seminary supporter. Frank was a freshman at Drew University in New Jersey while I was enrolled at a small college in upstate New York. He phoned to tell me of a seminar he attended at Drew on the theme of Russian Orthodoxy. He was particularly impressed by one of the speakers, a young priest named Fr Alexander Schmemann, a teacher at St Vladimir " s Seminary in New York City. He suggested that we travel to find out more about St Vladimir " s during our Easter vacation in 1957. Driving to New York City in my father " s black and white Chevy, (which unfortunately, by the conclusion of our trip, needed a new clutch) we approached the seminary " s neighborhood, Morningside Heights, looking for golden cupolas. Instead we found a six-story tenement on the corner of Broadway and 121 st street. The seminary was housed in several apartments while its classes were held in rooms (usually the boiler room) at Union Theological Seminary. After locating the office and chapel on the second floor, we found Fr Schmemann " s apartment on the fourth and rang his bell. A gray-haired woman with black wire frame glasses informed us that Father would be back later. I said to Frank, «I thought you said that Fr Schmemann was young. His wife sure looks old!» However this wasn " t his wife, but a woman named «Vava» who helped the Schmemann household -- its young working «matushka,» three children and several seminarians.

In Memory of His Beatitude Patriarch IV of Antioch and All the East His Beatitude Patriarch Ignatius IV (Hazim) of Antioch and All the East was born in 1920 in the village of Muharda, near the city of Hama, Syria. In 1936, he moved to Beirut, where he became an altar server. Years later, upon taking monastic vows, he became a hierodeacon. In 1945 he graduated from the American University of Beirut, and from 1949 to 1953 studied at the Saint Sergius Theological Institute in Paris. On his return to Lebanon, the young theologian with a master " s degree was ordained hieromonk. In 1942, he became one of the founders of the influential Orthodox Youth Movement in Lebanon and Syria, which has done much to renew youthful participation in Church life. In 1953, His Beatitude became one of the organizers of Syndesmos, the worldwide Brotherhood of Orthodox Youth. In 1961 he was ordained Bishop of Palmyra and Patriarchal Vicar, and in the following year, he was sent to the monastery of Balamand as superior and as dean of the Theological Seminary, which in 1988 was transformed into an Orthodox University—the first in the Middle East. His Beatitude published a series of theological books and numerous articles. He held an honorary doctorate from the Sorbonne, and from the St. Petersburg (1981) and Minsk (2003) Theological Academies. In 1970, the future Patriarch was appointed Metropolitan of Latakia (Laodicea). On 2 July 1979, he was elected Primate of the Church of Antioch and enthroned on 8 July of the same year. His Beatitude Patriarch Ignatius IV of Antioch and All the East suffered a stroke and reposed in the Lord on December 5, 2012. In honor of his memory, here are portions of his sermons, talks, and writings. Orthodoxy and Original Roots We must know that we are not the offshoot of an institution or tradition coming from outside. We are not the last memory of a historical period that our neighbors regard with antipathy. Certainly, they do not like some things about us, just as we do not like some things about them. As the Antiochene See strives towards its original roots, we shall move towards resolving these matters. To the Orthodox person we say “You are Orthodox because you are here in your faith. You represent no more than an upright, correct faith. You do not represent a nation, people, or state, nor do you represent merely a set of customs. You do not derive your Orthodoxy from anyone, even if sometimes you pray in various languages. Any language may be sanctified if the divine word is translated into it.”
