In the early twentieth century the Serbian scholar L. Stojanovi discovered in a Slavic manuscript kept in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris an additional note revealing that the codex had been copied in the district Kakiplak beneath the peak of Mount Athos by a certain Dionysios, who was residing there with his spiritual father, Theoktistos, and the monks Simon and Thomas. The most intriguing element in this note is that Dionysios states that he was working at the instigation of a person he describes as ‘our father and master kyr [sir] Romylos, the spiritual instructor’. 179 The note bears no date. Nevertheless, it is clear that Theoktistos, Dionysios, Simon, and Thomas were living somewhere at the desolate southern end of the Athonite peninsula, and were under the spiritual jurisdiction of one Romylos, who had commissioned them to copy a Slavic manuscript. To commission the reproduction of a Slavic manuscript the spiritual superintendent of this small monastic group must have been Slavic-speaking. But was he to be identified with St Romylos of Vidin, the hesychast anchorite residing at the locality Melana near the monastery of Megiste Lavra? L. Stojanovi was the first scholar to suggest, as early as 1903, that the text of the note referred to St Romylos of Vidin. 180 A strong argument supporting his suggestion derives from the text of St Romylos’s Life. Being frequently disturbed by many monks who wished to benefit from his spiritual instruction, shortly before leaving Athos for good in 1371, the saint requested his spiritual son and biographer, Gregory, to find a place at the northern foot of Mount Athos, sufficiently lonely and solitary to become his next, more secluded abode. 181 Analysing the expression describing the location of St Romylos’s new hermitage – ες τ πρóποδα το θωνος/въ аонскаа – one must acknowledge that it is essentially identical with the phrase под аономъ used by the aforesaid scribe Dionysios. However, the evidence provided by this coincidence is not conclusive, so we must look for more arguments.

A film on the contemporary ascetic Schema-Monk Anthony of Zograf appears on YouTube Sofia, August 31, 2015 An amateur film on the modern Orthodox ascetic of piety from Holy Mount Athos, Schema-Monk Anthony of Zograf, who reposed on Mt. Athos in 2000 at a very young age, has appeared on YouTube, reports Dveri.bg .      The film’s author, Sonya Ankova, describes her work as “a modest amateur film on blessed Schema-Monk Anthony of Zograf.” According to S. Ankova, her aim is to provoke the interest of professional documentary film makers, so that they could examine the life of the monk, whose incorrupt relics (taking into account eyewitnesses’ evidence) were uncovered not long ago, and make a professional film on Fr. Anthony. The current film consists of reminiscences of friends and other people who knew Fr. Anthony and related stories of his life in Sofia and on Mt. Athos. The documentary comprises the reminiscences of Schema-Monk Cosmas of Zograf, Fr. John Chikalov, Rector of the capital’s Church of St. Parasceva, Nina Komarova, worker of the Church of the Holy Week in Sofia, Martin Ralchevsky, a writer and close friend of Schema-Monk Anthony, and Darin Alexiev, a teacher at the Sofia Theological Seminary of St. John of Rila. Monk Anthony (secular name: Todor Krystev Djambazov) was born on February 25, 1974, in the Bulgarian town of Tsarevo (formerly called Michurin). In 1992 he enrolled in the Faculty of Theology at the University of Sofia and graduated from this university in 1997. On August 6, 1996, he was tonsured a monk at the St. George’s Monastery of Pomorie in Bulgaria by Metropolitan Joannicius of Sliven, taking the name of Anthony. Upon completion of his theological education Fr. Anthony moved to Holy Mount Athos (he moved there as a layman so as to avoid problems with the Greek authorities). The Zograf Monastery’s community gladly accepted him. A month before his death on March 3, 2000, Fr. Anthony took the great schema. 2 сентября 2015 г. Tweet Нравится Newly-elected abbot of St. Panteleimon’s Monastery ordained as hieromonk Mt. Athos, October 14, 2016      The feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos was solemnly celebrated on October 14 at the Russian St. Panteleimon’s Monastery on Mt. Athos, reports Russian Athos . About 500 pilgrims from various countries around the world were able to participate that day in the festive Divine Liturgy and to venerate the relics of the monastery. Representatives of a number of Russian kellias on Athos were present as well. The atmosphere was festive and reverent. The festive Liturgy in the Protection Cathedral of St. Panteleimon’s Monastery was celebrated by three hierarchs: Met. Zinovy (Korzinkin) of Saransk and Mordovia, Abp. Jonathan (Tsvetkov) of Abakhan and Khakassia, and Bp. Barsanuphy (Stolyar) of Borodyansk, vicar of the Kiev diocese. During the Liturgy Abp. Jonathan ordained the newly-elected abbot of the monastery, Hierodeacon Evlogy (Ivanov) as a hieromonk.                In the morning after the Liturgy a festive Moleben to the Most Holy Theotokos was also served.    The miraculous appearance of the Most Holy Theotokos in the monastery’s Protection Cathedral is remembered in the Athonite monastery on this day. As is known, the cathedral is connected with many signs and appearances of the Mother of God, for which it is often referred to as the Miraculous Church, like the cathedral of the Kiev Caves Lavra. Here, twice, in 1862 and 1863, the Most Holy Theotokos repeated the miracle she performed of old in Blachernae. According to a number of surviving eyewitness testimonies, in those years on the day of the Holy Protection the Mother of God was clearly seen by many worshipers in the monastery church with outstretched Omophorion. Recollections of it are preserved in the journals of many brothers, and even in that of Elder Jerome (Solomentsov). Translated by Jesse Dominick Pravoslavie.ru 15 октября 2016 г. Tweet Нравится Abortion is dreadful murder says Archimandrite Ephraim Holy Mount Athos, September 30, 2016      In the course of shooting the documentary “Athos – for Life!” the crew of Sobor.by had the opportunity to visit Holy Mount Athos and to talk with Archimandrite Ephraim, Abbot of the great Vatopedi Monastery. The elder answered a question about abortion. “You need to work hard and to do your best in order to live according to Church rules, if you want to seriously combat abortion. Today people easily kill each other – parents kill their own children. We are praying on Holy Mount Athos, and you should try and explain to people that abortion is dreadful murder. A heavy responsibility lies on the shoulders of those who allow abortions. A crime is committed by physicians, parents and the woman who gets an abortion. Abortions are prohibited in Muslim countries. But, unfortunately, in our countries where we keep the truth of Orthodoxy they are legalized – and that is very sad. That is why all of us must struggle with the murder which is called abortion,” he said. Translated by Dmitry Lapa Pravoslavie.ru 3 октября 2016 г. Tweet Нравится Sunday of Orthodoxy Liturgy and Procession at Vatopedi Monastery (VIDEO) Source: Pemptousia March 15, 2017 The first Sunday of Great Lent is known as the Sunday or Triumph of Orthodoxy, in which victory over the iconoclasts, who opposed the veneration of the holy icons, is celebrated. The Church teaches that we can depict Christ in iconography because He became incarnate, taking on a visible body. Thus the icons are a safeguard to the dogma of the Incarnation. On this Sunday we process with holy icons, professing the triumph of Truth over falsehood. This video presents highlights of the Divine Liturgy and procession with the holy icons on the Sunday of Orthodoxy, 2017, at the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi. Pemptousia 23 марта 2017 г. Elder Ephraim came to America in response to the pleas of the faithful to provide this guidance, but in doing so many questions have been raised concerning the nature of Orthodox monasticism and teachings. To assess his role and importance for American Orthodoxy it is helpful to investigate his life and spiritual development, which will provide insight into him whom Metropolitan Hierotheos Vlachos says “received fire, and ... has imparted this fire ... to the Church in America that has great need of it.” The Great and Holy Monastery of Vatopaidi The Great and Holy Monastery of Vatopaidi December 17/30 the holy Orthodox Church commemorates Sts. Elder Tikhon, spiritual father of St. Paisios the Athonite, proposed for canonization Moscow, March 30, 2017 Elder Tikhon (left) and St. Paisios (right). A fresco in the Church of All Athonite Saints at St. Panteleimon " s Monastery on Mt. Athos. Photo: afonit.info      The question of the glorification of the Russian Athonite elder Tikhon (Golenkov), the spiritual father of St. Paisios the Athonite, was recently discussed at the Moscow Theological Academy at the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra. The discussion occurred as part of the academy’s “Day of the Memory of Two Elders: St. Paisios the Athonite and Archimandrite Kirill (Pavlov),” in which the new book Athonite Elder Tikhon (Golenkov) (in Russian) was presented. The hope was expressed that the Church would support the glorification of this great twentieth-century elder, reports a correspondent of the site Russian Athos . The new book dedicated to Elder Tikhon was published with the blessing of the abbot of Koutloumousiou Monastery Archimandrite Christodoulos, who was the confessor and co-struggler of the great St. Paisios the Athonite. The book has been recommended for distribution by the publishing house of the Russian Orthodox Church. Meanwhile, according to Russian Minister of Justice Alexander Konovalov, Metropolitan Zenobius of Saransk and Mordovia and the head of the Russian Church’s committee for canonization Bishop Pankraty of Troitsk have introduced an initiative to glorify Elder Tikhon as a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church. “We are hoping for Church-wide support for the initiative,” the minister stated. Interest in the person of Fr. Tikhon has grown since the canonization of his most famous disciple St. Paisios the Athonite in 2015. As noted by Konovalov, “In 1,000 years of the presence of Russian monks on Mt. Athos, only one of the Russian ascetics has been glorified by the Church of Constantinople—St. Silouan the Athonite… In this regard, we found it reasonable to also publish a book about the teacher and co-struggler of St. Pasios, who was the Russian elder Tikhon.” Elder Tikhon was born in 1884 in the Russian Empire, in the village of Novaya Mikhaylovka (in present-day Volgograd). At the age of 24 he arrived to Mt. Athos where he spent the remaining sixty years of his life in unceasing prayer and repentance. He is an example to all of a true Christian and monk who already in his lifetime acquired the Holy Spirit, and his relics have been shown to be incorrupt. 30 марта 2017 г. Russian monastery on Mt. Athos commemorates deceased soldiers of WWII Holy Mount Athos, May 11, 2015      On May 9, 2015, the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory over fascism, a litia for repose of the deceased Orthodox soldiers was served at the Russian St. Panteleimon’s Monastery on Mt. Athos. According to the report by the Afonit.info website, a memorial service was celebrated in the monastic chapel of rest, where monks departed this life who served in the Great Patriotic War (Second World War) are especially commemorated. According to Schema-Archimandrite Jeremiah (Alekhin), Abbot of the St. Panteleimon’s Monastery, in 1941 fascism threw a challenge to the whole of the human race. Nazism is the greatest evil invented by the demonic mind in order to destroy all of what is good and pure in the world, to profane and annul the basics of the Christian love. That is why the war into which the Russian people entered in 1941 was a great heroic deed that cannot be overestimated. The Russian Orthodox Church then called upon all its faithful members to stand up staunchly to defend not the Soviet government, nor the Communist regime or atheism, but to defend their motherland which was baptized in the Dniepr [River] by Holy Prince Vladimir, defended from the German invaders by Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky, and called upon for struggle with Mamai by Holy Prince Dimitry Donskoy. We should not forget that the Victory Day in 1945 virtually coincided with the feast of the Resurrection of Christ. Such coincidences cannot be meaningless. So it is appropriate to address you on this day with the Paschal greetings: Christ is Risen! Happy Victory Day! Schema-Archimandrite Jeremiah knows what fascism is like by his own experience and well knows the price of victory. In 1941 he was forcibly taken to Germany where he underwent backbreaking labor, starvation, and inhuman living conditions. In captivity, 28-year-old Yakov Alekhin learned to pray. According to him, prayer comes to a man in trouble, when it seems that hope itself is dying; then prayer becomes the only thread of salvation from despair. There he decided to become a monk, should the Lord vouchsafe to keep him alive. Father Abbot recalls the generosity of common German people, how German women gave them bread through the barbed wire. Fr. Jeremiah says he will remember the taste of that bread forever. In his view, the monstrous ideology made the German people instruments of infernal, misanthropic aims. But this nation is kind-hearted by nature. According to Schema-Archimandrite Jeremiah, Victory Day is not the day marking the victory over the German nation, but the victory over the evil, hatred, diabolical pride, and death. 13 мая 2015 г.
