Metropolitan Hilarion meets with Syrian delegation led by Supreme Mufti of Syria September 7, 2012 On September 6, 2012, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations, received a delegation of religious leaders from the Syrian Arab Republic. It included Sheikh Ahmed Badreddin Hassoun, Supreme Mufti of Syria, and Bishop Luke of Seidnaya (Orthodox Church of Antioch). They were accompanied by Syria’a Ambassador to Moscow Dr. Riad Haddad, and Mufti Farid Salman Khaidarov, chairman of the Council of Ulamas of the Russian Association of Islamic Accord (All-Russia’s Muftiate). The DECR was represented by Archpriest Sergiy Zvonarev secretary for the far abroad, and Deacon Dimitry Safonov of the DECR secretariat for the far abroad. Metropolitan Hilarion welcomed the guests and conveyed them a greeting from His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. Addressing the guests, His Eminence stressed that there were people of various religions living in Syria. Until recently, this country showed to the world an example of interreligious harmony, but at present it has plunged into an inter-community and interreligious conflict. He emphasized that terrorism was a common threat for our two countries. Metropolitan Hilarion expressed special concern for the continued violence in Syria where it has already victimized scores of thousands of people. Extremists have destroyed churches and Christian institutions and eliminated shrines significant for the whole Christendom. The Supreme Mufti of Syria noted that his visit was an expression of gratitude for the visit His Holiness Patriarch Kirill made to Syria and for the position Russia has taken with regard to Syria and her people. Bishop Luke spoke about the suffering the Orthodox Christians had to endure in the bloody war but their refusal to leave the country. In conclusion, Metropolitan Hilarion assured his guests that the Russian Orthodox Church would do all that is possible for her to relieve the situation of Syria’s Christian population and to help the sister Church, which is the Patriarch of Antioch. Patriarch Kirill made a special appeal and lifted up a special prayer for peace in Kazakhstan; the people of Kazakhstan were also addressed by Metropolitan Alexander, head of the Metropolis of Kazakhstan, and the Supreme Mufti of Kazakhstan. “On the part of the Church and traditional religious confession everything possible was made to appease the situation, to reconcile people”. Metropolitan Hilarion stressed. According to the DECR chairman, “In our time such mass disorders usually do not begin without instigation from outside, including from abroad”. “As Russian ambassador in the USA Anatoly Antonov noted, it is quite probable that it is interdepended: the events in the Middle East and the grown of terrorism observed in various countries, including Afghanistan. All this cannot but tells upon the situations in adjacent states”. Metropolitan Hilarion said adding that the Kazakhstan authorities are to carry out a very serious investigation, the results of which will make it clear what stood behind the January events in the republic. The protest actions began in Kazakhstan on January 2 amid a double-digit increase in the prices for liquefied petroleum gas used by many people of the republic to refuel their cars. The protests grew into disorders as marauders and radicals became active. The country authorities introduced the state of emergency until January 19 and later appealed for help to the Collective Security Treaty Organization, which sent peacemakers to Kazakhstan. On January 13, after the situation stabilized, it was announced that the SCTO mission was successfully completed and the military would return stage by stage to their permanent places of deployment. According to the latest information, during the disorders in Kazakhstan 225 people, among them 19 law-enforcement military, were killed. Archive His Holiness Patriarch Kirill’s talk with Primate of Serbian Orthodox Church 27 April 2022 year 19:23 On April 27, 2022, a talk took place between His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia through remote video communication. Participating in the talk from the Russian Orthodox Church were also Metropolitan Hilarion, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations (DECR), and Archpriest Nikolay Balashov, DECR vice-chairman. From the Serbian Church, there also was Bishop Irinej of Baka. The Primates of the two Churches exchanged Paschal greetings and cordial acclamations of the Bright Resurrection of Christ. During a prolonged brotherly talk, they discussed the events going on in Ukraine. Special attention was given to the humanitarian situation in Donbass. Patriarch Kirill thanked the Patriarch of Serbia for the support and solidarity of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church. “There is the firm belief that in this grave time the Serbian Church is with us”, His Holiness said. In particular, he noted with gratitude the church aid to refugees from Ukraine coming to the country spiritually nourished by the Patriarch of Serbia. He mentioned specially the fundraising organized in Serbian churches with a blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije to be them conveyed to the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church and her Primate, His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy. Metropolitan Hilarion venerated the shrines at St. Sergius of Radonezh chapel and was welcomed by Metropolitan Tikhon and the OCA administration staff. The DECR chairman greeted His Beatitude and his fellow workers on behalf of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill and presented a panagia to His Beatitude. Taking part in the meeting of His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon with Metropolitan Hilarion were OCA chancellor Archpriest Alexander Rentel, OCA director for external affairs and interchurch relations Archpriest Leonid Kishkovsky, secretary to the Metropolitan Archdeacon Joseph Matusiak, Hegumen Nikodim (Balyasnikov) and Rev. Sylvie Bermann, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the French Republic to the Russian Federation, accompanied by two staff members of the Embassy. Metropolitan Hilarion warmly greeted the guests and at the request of Ms Bermann told them about the current situation in Ukraine and the ministry of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church which finds herself under the pressure of politicians and nationalists. He said: “We exert all possible efforts for saving the unity of our Church.” DECR chairman explained the current situation of the Russian Orthodox Church which is the Church of Russia and also of other countries on her canonical territory. He told the French Ambassador about the thirty recent years of the revival of the Church that can be seen in the restoration of the old churches and monasteries and construction of the new ones, and about the experience of spiritual care for compatriots living abroad. Another topics of the talk were a dialogue of the Russian Orthodox Church with traditional religious communities at home through the activity of the Interreligious Council of Russia and the relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church, the main event having been the meeting of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill with Pope Francis in Havana in February 2016. Metropolitan Hilarion touched upon such topics as sociology of religion pertaining to the number of Orthodox Christians in Russia; the work in the sphere of catechization and religious education aimed at the increasing in the number of people with the experience of church life; as well as cooperation between the Church and the state; and the attitude of the Church to sects and destructive religious structures. Russian Orthodox Church gives Orthodox Encyclopedia to Iranian cultural center in Moscow Moscow, September 23, 2010 On September 22, 2010, Rev. Sergiy Zvonarev, DECR secretary for far-abroad countries, and D. Safonov, a DECR staff member, met with the director of the cultural representation at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr. Abuzar Ebrahimi Torkaman, to present him with a set of the Orthodox Encyclopaedia volumes as a special gift from the Orthodox Encyclopaedia Center. Father Sergiy explained the purpose of this edition and the work of the academic team working on it. Dr. Ebrahimi thanked him for the gift and told his guests about the publications on the Russian Orthodox Church and Russian sights he helped to prepare. He also spoke about many-volume publication projects devoted to Islam carried out at present in Iran. They also discussed the trip a Russian Orthodox delegation is to make to Teheran in October 2010 for the 7 th sessions of the Joint Russian-Iranian Commission for Dialogue. The session will discuss the theme ‘The role of religion in the life of the individual and society’. Father Sergiy spoke of the great importance attached in the Russian Church to interreligious dialogue including the Church’s dialogue with the Islamic community of Iran, which has lasted for already 15 years now. ‘Our dialogue does not depend on political changes. It is beyond politics. It is a guarantee of its sustainability’, he said, adding that in spite of the difficulties arising from the international sanctions imposed on Iran, the respectful dialogue between religious communities in the two countries can and must develop further. Using the experience of the Orthodoxy-Islam commission, the Russian Church seeks today to conduct dialogue with traditional Muslim communities in other countries as well, in Turkey and Egypt in particular. Dr. Ebrahimi agreed with the need to continue and deepen dialogue in the joint Russian-Iranian commission and stressed its importance for the two nations. Archive Metropolitan Hilarion meets with Catholic Archbishop of Madrid 17 September 2019 year 19:44 On September 17, 2019, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate department for extern church relations (DECR), who is on a visit to Spain with a blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, met with Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra, Archbishop of Madrid.  Present at the meeting, which took place at the Archbishop’s Palace in Madrid, were also Archbishop Nestor of Madrid and Lisbon; Archpriest Andrey Andrey Kordochkin, secretary of the diocese of Madrid and ecclesiarch of the church of St. Mary Magdalene Equal-to-the-Apostles; Hieromonk Stephan (Igumnov), DECR secretary for inter-Christian relations; Prof A. Riccardi, secretary of Sant’Egidio Community; and Subdeacon V. Li. Cardinal Osoro Sierra warmly welcomed Metropolitan Hilarion and expressed delight at His Eminence’s another visit to Madrid, where he had already met in 2014 with Cardinal Osoro Sierra’s predecessor, Archbishop Rouco Varela. Cardinal Osoro Sierra asked the metropolitan to convey special greetings to His Holiness Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, saying that he admired the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church. Metropolitan Hilarion recalled the important event which took place in the last years in the bilateral relations and which gave a considerable impetus to them – the meeting between Pope Francis of Rome and Patriarch Kirill in Havana. The Pope and the Patriarch signed a Joint Declaration touching upon the basic topics of the bilateral dialogue, which opened a new page in its history. Among the important events, His Eminence Hilarion said, was also the bringing of a part of the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker to Russia. The Havana meeting also dealt with the need for supporting Christians who are subjected to persecution in various regions in the world. After that, the Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church worked out a number of joint initiatives in support for suffering Christians in Syria and other countries of the Middle East. As Metropolitan Hilarion stressed, some of these initiatives are implemented together with the Catholic Kirche in Not foundation.
