Archive DECR secretary for inter-Christian relations meets with representative of the Ethiopian Church 25 September 2021 year 12:20 On September 22, 2021, DECR secretary for inter-Christian relations Hieromonk Stephen (Igumnov) met with the deputy chancellor of the Ethiopian Church and dean of Addis-Ababa, Rev. Ueldejesus Sefugalato, at the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate. In attendance there were also Mr. Znabuzenge Zaisa, staff member of the Embassy of the Federative Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in the Russian Federation; Mr. Hailejesus Asefa, representative of the Ethiopian diaspora in Moscow, and Mr. D. Arakelian, an adviser of the DECR secretariat for inter-Christian relations. Rev. Ueldejesus Sefugalato came to Russia with the aim to discuss issues concerning further development of relations between the Ethiopian Church and the Moscow Patriarchate. The guest told Father Stephen about a difficult situation experienced today by Ethiopian Christians due to the continued civic conflict in Ethiopia. Quite often in the course of armed clashes, ancient Christian shrines run the risk of being damaged. He noted that the faithful of the Ethiopian Church pin special hopes on the support of the Russian State as the main defender of suffering Christians today and the Russian Orthodox Church. Hieromonk Stephen, in his turn, assured the guest of invariable support citing the actions of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia aimed to protect Ethiopian Christians and all the Ethiopian people. He stressed the historical nature of relations between the two fraternal nations of Russia and Ethiopia and informed the guest about the work plans for Ethiopia to be implemented through the Commission for Dialogue between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Ethiopian Church and the Interreligious Working Group for Defending the Rights of the Faithful against Discrimination and Xenophobia under the Presidential Council for Cooperation with Religious Organizations. The DECR secretary also added that the Russian Orthodox Church, traditionally restraining herself from making statements in support of particular political forces, is praying for an early restoration of sound peace and brotherly love in the Ethiopian society and for the strengthening of the Ethiopian statehood, one of the oldest in the African continent. Archive DECR representative attends 6th International Interreligious Youth Forum 30 September 2019 year 20:43 The 6 th International Interreligious Youth Forum began its work in Manas, Republic of Dagestan, on 30 September 2019.  It was organized by the Russian Orthodox diocese of Makhachkala, the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Republic of Dagestan (SAMRD) the Council of Jewish Communities in Dagestan, and the Ministry for ethnic policy and religious affairs of the Republic. Over one hundred and fifty religious leaders, statesmen and young representatives of religious communities from different regions of Russia and foreign countries attended.. Deacon Iliya Kashitsyn, a staff member of the DECR secretariat for interreligious relations, took part in the forum with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and read out the message of greetings from Metropolitan Hilarion at the opening session. The participants visited the religious and educational centre under construction by the SAMRD and planted trees. That same day representatives of the Synodal departments and Orthodox guests visited the Cathedral of the Dormition and were received by Archbishop Varlaam of Makhachkala and Grozny. On October 2, a conference on the ways leading to ethno-confession peace and accord was held. The DECR representative took part in the section ‘Experience of traditional confessions in the Republic in ideological countering extremism and terrorism in the context of the 1999 events in Dagestan.’ He told the audience about the grounds of successful propaganda of extremism among young people, noting the key role of religious education in the formation of true culture of interreligious relations. The conference continued its work at the Republican House of Friendship. Several hundred of students of the Dagestan leading educational institutions attended. Archive Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk meets with Pope Francis 20 October 2018 year 10:53 On 19 October 2018, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations (DECR), met with Pope Francis at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican. Attending the meeting were also Mons. Visvaldas Kulbokas from the Vatican Secretariat of State; Rev. Alexei Dikarev, a DECR staff member; and sub-deacon Ivan Nikolayev. Pope Francis warmly greeted Metropolitan Hilarion who attended the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops of the Catholic Church as an observer from the Russian Orthodox Church and brought greetings to the participants. Pope Francis thanked Metropolitan Hilarion for his speech. The DECR chairman conveyed greetings from His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia to Pope Francis. Discussed during the meeting held in the atmosphere of mutual understanding and amiability were topical issues pertaining to relations between the Moscow Patriarchate and the Roman Catholic Church. Metropolitan Hilarion shared his good impressions of the presentations he heard at the plenary session of the Synod and told Pope Francis about his working visit to Portugal last September and his meetings with Cardinal Manuel Clemente, Patriarch of Lisbon, and other high representative of the Roman Catholic Church in Portugal. The Summer institute has proved to be a perspective project of exchange of priests and students of theology for acquaintance with traditions and modern life of the Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox Churches. This project looks important in the context of the Assembly of the Synod being held in the Vatican on the theme “Young people, the faith and vocational discernment.” Special attention was paid to the church situation in Ukraine. Metropolitan Hilarion briefed Pope Francis on the decisions taken at the session of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church held in Minsk on October 15 pertaining to the uncanonical actions of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, explained the position of the Moscow Patriarchate and presented the statement adopted in Minsk. The DECR chairman noted that because of the actions of the Patriarchate of Constantinople the Russian Orthodox Church had to suspend its participation in the work of the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. 40th anniversary of autonomous status of the Orthodox Church of Japan is celebrated in Osaka October 10, 2010 On 10 October 2010, the 40 th anniversary of canonization of St. Nicholas of Japan, Equal-to-the-Apostles, and the granting of the autonomous status to the Orthodox Church of Japan by the Russian Orthodox Church were celebrated at the Church of the Intercession in Osaka, Japan. His Eminence Daniel, Archbishop of Tokyo and Metropolitan of All Japan, officiated at the celebration. Taking part in the celebration, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, was a delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church led by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations (DECR). The delegation consisted of Archbishop Theognost of Sergiev Posad, abbot of the Lavra of the Holy Trinity and St. Sergius; the DECR deputy chairman archpriest Nikolai Balashov; DECR staff members hierodeacon Ioann (Kopeikin), L. Sevastianov and S. Petrovsky; and clerics and laymen of the Russian Orthodox Church. Metropolitan Daniel of Tokyo, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, Archbishop Theognost of Sergiev Posad, Bishop Seraphim of Sendai, and many clergymen celebrated the Divine Liturgy, after which Metropolitan Daniel warmly greeted Metropolitan Hilarion and his suite. E. John Sullivan. The high guest was accompanied by second secretaries of the U.S. Embassy Mr. Arshia Benam and Mr. Michael Cline. Participating the in the meeting was also Archpriest Sergey Zvonarev, DECR secretary for the affairs of the diaspora, and Archpriest Daniil Andreyuk, representative of the Orthodox Church in America to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. Metropolitan Hilarion welcomed the guest to the synodal department and expressed condolences on 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. The DECR chairman told the ambassador about the service of the Russian Orthodox Church in the situation of the pandemic of a new coronavirus infection and about the peculiarities of celebration of divine services in the period of isolation. His Eminence also shared his story about his latest trip to the USA for the International Religious Freedom Summit in Washington. At a request of the head of the American diplomatic mission, Metropolitan Hilarion spoke about the difficult pages in the history of the Russian Church in the situation of atheistic ideology and about the church revival which began in our country 30 years ago, the restoration of ruined churches and construction of new ones, about today’s church life, pastoral care for compatriots residing abroad and the state of inter-confessional and interreligious dialogue in Russia. Archive His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon of All America and Canada completes his visit to Moscow 10 December 2019 year 12:41 On 10 th  December 2019, the Primate of the Orthodox Church in America completed his visit to Moscow.  The delegation accompanying His Beatitude on his visit included Archbishop David of Sitka and Alaska; Archimandrite Andrei (Hoarte), bishop-elect of Cleveland, auxiliary to the archbishop of the Romanian Episcopate; Archpriest Alexander Rentel, chancellor of the OCA; Archpriest Daniel Andrejuk, rector of the OCA Representation in Moscow; and Protodeacon Joseph Matusiak, secretary to the OCA Primate. Attending the events held during the OCA Primate’s visit was also Protopresbyter Daniel Hubiak, first rector of the Moscow Representation. On 7 th  December 2019, His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon and His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine In-the-Fields – the Moscow Representation of the Orthodox Church in America. The day before Metropolitan Tikhon had met with the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church. In the evening of 7 th  December, His Beatitude visited the Church of the ‘Joy of All Who Sorrow’ Icon of the Mother of God in Bolshaya Ordynka Street in Moscow. The next day the OCA Primate celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Holy Hieromartyr Clement the Pope of Rome in Zamoskvorechye district in Moscow and visited St. Tikhon’s Orthodox University of Humanities to preside over the symposium on the life of the Orthodox Church in America. On 9 th  December His Beatitude and the OCA delegation visited the Donskoy Stavropegic Monastery, the Church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachi and the State Tretyakov Gallery. Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia. Participating in the meeting from the Croatian side were Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Croatia to Russia Tomislav Car, secretary of the Cabinet of Ministers Lara Romano, head of the Eurasia and Oceania section of the foreign affairs department of Croatia Dunja Sicaja, and press secretary of the minister Lovorka Šimievi. From the DECR there were Archpriest Sergiy Zvonarev, secretary for the affairs of the diaspora and Rev. Andrey Titushkin, a staff member of the secretariat for the affairs of the diaspora. Metropolitan Hilarion welcomed the head of the Croatian foreign policy department to the synodal establishment responsible for international relations of the Russian Orthodox Church. He informed the guest about the working agenda of the department, which includes interaction with Local Orthodox Churches, non-Orthodox confessions, traditional religious communities, foreign states as well as relations with compatriots residing abroad. Mr Grli-Radman, on his part, greeted the archpastor and asked him to convey his words of gratitude to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and Russia for the warm expression of condolences upon the earthquake, which happened in late 2020 in Croatia. The DECR chairman told the high-ranking diplomat about the relationships between the Russian and the Serbian Orthodox Churches, including in the territory of Croatia. Metropolitan Hilarion expressed profound satisfaction with the fact that the Russian Church can take part in restoring Orthodox churches in Croatia, which were affected by the earthquake. Archive Metropolitan Hilarion visits Dormition Cathedral in Budapest 7 September 2019 year 13:54 On 7 th  September 2019, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, who had arrived in Hungary with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia to take part in the Budapest Forum for Christian Communications, visited the Cathedral of the Holy Dormition in Budapest, where restoration works are under way. The DECR chairman was accompanied by Archpriest Sergy Zvonarev, DECR secretary for far abroad countries; Rev. Svyatoslav Bulakh, advisor-assistant to the ruling hierarch of the diocese of Hungary; Rev. Iliya Kosykh, head of the DECR Communication Service; and Subdeacon Vyacheslav Lee.  In 2007, at the request of Bishop Hilarion, administrator of the diocese of Hungary and Budapest, LUKOIL Company allocated funds for the restoration of the stone base at one of the cathedral’s towers destroyed during World War II. The base was restored in 2008. On 24 th  October 2016, an agreement was signed to provide a subsidy to the diocese of Hungary of the Russian Orthodox Church for the restoration of the Dormition Cathedral and other cultural heritage objects. The subsidy was given by the Hungarian state. In the beginning of 2019 a tender was organized for the exterior and some of the interior repair works. At this point, the roof has been repaired, 90% of repair works at the façade of the church have been completed, and the northern tower has been restored. The extensive exterior repair works are planned to be completed by early October. The first two tiers of the iconostasis and other interior decoration repair works are to be completed by next March. All restoration works are expected to be concluded in late December 2019 – February 2020. Metropolitan Hilarion acquainted himself with the restoration progress, climbed the scaffolding and inspected the restored tower which is now crowned with the gilded cross. Archive Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk visited Hungary 3 June 2022 year 13:28 On June 1-3, 2022, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, with a blessing of His Holiness Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, visited Hungary. On June 2, the DECR Chairman met with Cardinal Péter Erd, Archbishop of Esztergom–Budapest. In their talk, they dealt with a wide range of issues concerning the cooperation between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church at the present stage. After the conversation, Metropolitan Hilarion present the cardinal with the Hungarian version of his book Catechesis. In his turn, the head of the Archdiocese of Esztergom–Budapest presented his guest from the Russian Orthodox Church with the papers of the 52nd Eucharistic Congress of the Catholic Church, which took place in 2021 and at which the DECR Chairman presented a paper on the Orthodox understanding of the Eucharist. On the same day, Metropolitan Hilarion met with the Deputy Prime Minister of the Hungarian government, Mr. Zsolt Semjén. The DECR Chairman expressed gratitude to Hungary on behalf of the Russian Orthodox Church for the country’s firm position on the inadmissibility of including His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia in the EU sanction list. As Metropolitan Hilarion stressed, in an epoch of political crisis, the voice of the Church should not be artificially supressed. They discussed a number of issue of mutual concern. On the same day, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation, E. A. Stanislavov gave a dinner in honour of the Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate. Present at the dinner were Rev. Svyatoslav Bulakh, secretary of the Moscow Patriarchate Diocese of Hungary, and V. Li, an aide to the DECR chairman. Archive Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk speaks at global Christian youth forum in Manila 10 August 2019 year 11:23 On 8th – 10th August 2019, the Jesus Global Youth Day took place at the Mall of Asia Arena in the city of Manila, the Philippines, bringing together over thirty thousand participants from more than 100 countries.  With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, attended the forum. On 9th August, Metropolitan Hilarion addressed the audience of 30 thousand young people, speaking about the importance of the personality of the Lord Jesus Christ in the life of a Christian. The DECR chairman also told the young people from various continents who gathered together in Manila about the Orthodox faith, the Russian Orthodox Church and its history in the 20th century, making a special emphasis on the revival of church life in the recent thirty years. “Such upturn in religious life in the territory of the former atheistic empire cannot be caused by natural or socio-political factors alone, but clearly is of supernatural character. This revival does not spring from our human efforts. Its main reason is the personality of our Lord Jesus Christ – God Incarnate and Saviour of the world,” the DECR chairman said.
