Besides any skills John had acquired, he undoubtedly would have had help; even the most literate normally used scribes, 862 and Josephus " s staff included style editors to improve his Greek. 863 John would have been an unusual writer if he published the work entirely by himself. One scholar even uses this final factor to account for the stylistic differences between the Fourth Gospel and Revelation; exiled on Patmos, John wrote the latter «in his own idiosyncratic Greek.» 864 But finally, John " s Greek is not particularly «literate» Greek anyway; it would demand far less proficiency than the Greek of Luke-Acts, James, Hebrews, 1 Peter, or even the Pastorals. John s age could be cited as a problem. After all, a fisherman who began following Jesus around 27 C.E. would now have been in his eighties or nineties. A guess in the eighties is reasonable. John and most of the disciples were probably somewhat younger than Jesus when they followed him (13:33; 21:5, though these terms apply to any students regardless of age), though none of them would have been younger than adolescents. 865 Both fishermen working with their fathers and disciples of teachers could be in their teens. Unlike Peter ( Mark 1:30 ; cf. 1Cor 9:5 ), no wife for John is mentioned in the Gospels (though one cannot put much weight on this silence). Further, his father, unlike Peter " s father-in-law, remains alive at John " s calling ( Mark 1:20, 29–30 ). If he was in his mid-teens ca. 27 C.E., he would be in his early eighties in the mid-nineties of the first century. It is true that most people did not live this long, then as today. 866 But inscriptions attest that some people did live this long, and life expectancy increased considerably if one survived childhood. That one disciple of the Twelve should survive to the end of the first century, and then be prevailed upon to preserve the memoirs which he had been preaching, is not inherently improbable. 867 That he, like some other Judean Christians, might have followed the Hellenist Diaspora in fleeing Palestine in the wake of the revolt, is no less probable than the widely-attested tradition that Peter ministered in Rome after Paul " s death. 868

As an example let us look at a few verses from the Gospel according to Luke 8:19–21 where it reads, Now Jesus» mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. Someone told him, «Your mother and brothers are standing outside, waiting to see you.» He replied, »My mother and brothers are those who hear God " s word and put it into practice.» As I understand it, Muslims would expect the true Gospel to include only the words in boldfaced type which would be considered the words of God through Jesus. Then in another book there would be a Hadith saying, According to James the half-brother of Jesus (may God be pleased with him) the occasion for the revelation of Luke 8:21 was as follows, Now my mother and brothers and myself came to see Jesus, but we were not able to get near him because of the crowd. Someone told him, «Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.» And then the verse was revealed, »My mother and brothers are those who hear God " s word and put it into practice.» This Hadith was transmitted by Luke and Mark in their books, which (along with those of Matthew and John) are the most valuable among the collections of Hadiths.) (Material in Italics arranged or added) As a second example we might take Jesus» teaching on food as found in Mark 7:15 where he said, «Nothing outside a man can make him by going into him. Rather it is what comes out of a man that makes him This would be considered Quranic type material and then in some other book we would find the following Hadith. According to Peter, one of the twelve closest disciples (may God be pleased with him and with them), Jesus» teaching about food as found in Mark 7:15 and 20–23 was revealed in the following manner. The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem...saw some of us eating food with – that is ceremonially unwashed – hands... So the Pharisees and teachers...asked Jesus, «Why don " t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with hands?»... Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, «listen to me, everyone, and understand this. Nothing outside a man can make him by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him After he had left the crowd, we entered the house, and we asked him about this parable. «Are you so dull?» he asked. «Don " t you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him For it doesn " t go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body»... Then he went on and the whole saying was revealed: What comes out of a man is what makes him For from within, out of men " s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man This Hadith was transmitted by Mark who wrote it down from Peter, Matthew also transmitted it.

Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards. Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake. Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice (Jn. 13:36-38). St. John Chrysostom also states quite clearly the magnificent transformation of Thomas, and his great courage: “Now they all feared the attacks of the Jews, but Thomas above the rest; wherefore also he said: Let us go, that we also may die with Him . Some say that he desired himself to die; but it is not so; the expression is rather one of cowardice. Yet he was not rebuked, for Christ as yet supported his weakness, but afterwards he became stronger than all, and invincible. For the wonderful thing is this; that we see one who was so weak before the Crucifixion, become after the Crucifixion, and after having believed in the Resurrection, more zealous than any. So great was the power of Christ. The very man who dared not go in company with Christ to Bethany, the same while not seeing Christ ran well nigh through the inhabited world, and dwelt in the midst of nations that were full of murder, and desirous to kill him” (St. John Chrysostom, sermon on St. John’s Gospel, verse 21:12). Question And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst ... Then saith he to Thomas ... and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God (Jn. 20:26-27 (parts), 20:28). What is the theological meaning of St. Thomas’s expression of worship? Answer An Old Believer Sermon, based mostly on the writings of St. John Chrysostom and Blessed Archbishop Theofylact of Bulgaria, among others, explains that the expression “My Lord and my God” indicates the dual nature of Christ. As a man, He is called Lord, as an earthly king might be, and also is God.

Peter and Paul for 6 weeks as I was a Lutheran looking to convert to Orthodox Christianity. Yes, the church is crowded and the children run around--which makes it hard to pay attention to the service. It is not nearly as nice and organized as the video depicts. If you are interested in following Antiochian Orthodoxy exactly how Fr. Justin views it, then this is your church. If you want your individual needs met and your individual circumstances taken into account, then this is not your church. Interesting, that the video shows all of the homeless removed from the front lawn of the church where they are usually encamped. Yes, they do need a larger church. This is a Russian website so you should know that there is a Russian Orthodox church, St. George Russian Orthodox, in a nearby city, West Jordan. They greatly need your support, too, including financially. It is there that I was ultimately baptised into the Orthodox Church. Fr. Michael will address your individual needs and give you his time when you request it. The services are beautiful and the parents mind their children. It is a wonderful Orthodox community. The parable of the ten virgins shows that only a man " s earthly life in God, in accordance with the testaments of Christ and therefore consonant with the Kingdom of Heaven, will justify him both at the particular judgment (after death) and at the general Dread Judgment. But all " formal " Christians, who live out of contact with God and care not about their salvation, prepare for themselves rejection. " No one mounts to heaven while only living, " teaches St. Isaac the Syrian. Neither formal faith, without a life according to Christ " s commandments (Lk. 6:46; Jas. 1:22; Rom. 2:13), nor prophecies in Christ " s name or many miracles worked by His Name, as is evident from the Savior " s words (Mt. 7:21-23), are sufficient for inheriting the Kingdom of Heaven. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his, says the Apostle Paul (Rom. 8:9), and it will be natural for such to hear the words of the Son of God: " Verily I say unto you, I know you not " (Matthew 25:12). Holy and Great Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday The services of Passion Week are a musical feast for the ears and the soul. Russian liturgical tradition is rich in special melodies for certain hymns of this most important week of the liturgical year, and if the services are also sung by a good choir, they are that much more memorable. The Sretensky Monastery in Moscow is fortunate to have a world famous male choir singing at all of these beautiful services. We would like to share some highlights of this singing with our English language readers, and have therefore provided the English texts to match the hymns. Holy Monday. Holy Tuesday Fr. The theme of Monday is that of the barren fig tree which yields no fruit and is condemned. On Tuesday the theme is on the vigilance of the wise virgins who, unlike their foolish sisters, were ready when the Lord came to them. Apostle Herodion of the Seventy, and those with Him Commemorated on April 8 Saints Herodion (Rodion), Agabus, Asyncritus, Rufus, Phlegon and Hermes are among the Seventy Apostles, chosen by Christ and sent out by Him to preach (Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles: January 4). The holy Apostle Herodion was a relative of Saint Paul, and his companion on many journeys. When Christianity had spread to the Balkan Peninsula, the Apostles Peter and Paul established Saint Herodion as Bishop of Patara. Saint Herodion zealously preached the Word of God and converted many of the Greek pagans and Jews to Christianity. Enraged by the preaching of the disciple, the idol-worshippers and Jews with one accord fell upon Saint Herodion, and they began to beat him with sticks and pelt him with stones. One of the mob struck him with a knife, and the saint fell down. But when the murderers were gone, the Lord restored him to health unharmed. After this, Saint Herodion continued to accompany the Apostle Paul for years afterward. When the holy Apostle Peter was crucified (+ c. 67), Saint Herodion and Saint Olympos were beheaded by the sword at the same time. The holy Apostle Agabus was endowed with the gift of prophecy. He predicted (Acts 11:27-28) the famine during the reign of the emperor Claudius (41-52), and foretold the suffering of the Apostle Paul at Jerusalem (Acts 21:11). Saint Agabus preached in many lands, and converted many pagans to Christ. Saint Rufus, whom the holy Apostle Paul mentions in the Epistle to the Romans (Rom. 16:11-15), was bishop of the Greek city of Thebes. Saint Asyncritus (Rom. 16:14) was bishop in Hyrcania (Asia Minor). Saint Phlegon was bishop in the city of Marathon (Thrace). Saint Hermes was bishop in Dalmatia (there is another Apostle of the Seventy by the name of Hermas, who was bishop in the Thracian city of Philippopolis). All these disciples for their intrepid service to Christ underwent fierce sufferings and were found worthy of a martyr’s crown. Archive ROCOR Synod of Bishops holds regular session 19 February 2020 year 11:41 On February 18, 2020, a regular session of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia took place under the chairmanship of the ROCOR First Hierarch, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York. Taking part in the meeting were Metropolitan Mark of Berlin and Germany, Archbishop Kyrill of San Francisco and Western America, Archbishop Gabriel of Montreal and Canada, Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, and Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan. Archbishop Peter of Chicago and Mid-America was unable to participate due to diocesan matters. The Synod members heard a brief report from Metropolitan Mark of Berlin and Germany on the activities of the ROCOR Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem, and considered an appeal from the Union of Descendants of the Russians of Gallipoli, seeking special prayers for the White Army soldiers on the centenary of their exodus from Russia. The Synod of Bishops blessed the prayerful commemoration on Saturday, November 21, this year. In view of the need to appoint a new ROCOR’s representative to the Church and Public Council for Commemoration of Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church under the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, the Synod designated Archpriest Nikolai Artemoff, secretary of the German diocese, as new representative. Having discussed the issues raised in a report of Archpriest Andre Papkov, president of the Synodal Liturgical Music Committee, the Synod decided to rename the school of church singing headed by him into the Metropolitan Laurus Synodal School of Church Singing. Noting the success of the recent conference held at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God in London, England, the Synod blessed the establishment of a special committee under the auspices of the Liturgical Music Committee with the view of coordinating events in Western Europe. The committee will work under the guidance of Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe. Acting on a request from Archbishop Peter of Chicago and Mid-America, the Synod of Bishops granted to the St John the Theologian Skete, formerly a metochion of the Holy Cross Monastery in West Virginia, the status of an independent monastery. The Synod of Bishops also deliberated on a number of disciplinary matters within the Church, and considered appeals from the ruling bishops for ecclesiastical awards to their clergymen and laity. The meeting concluded with the singing of “It is Truly Meet,” website of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia reports. NY court lets woman refuse vaccine made with aborted baby tissue/Православие.Ru NY court lets woman refuse vaccine made with aborted baby tissue New York, September 3, 2015      An Orthodox Christian woman has won the right to refuse a vaccine developed using aborted babies " tissue, based on her religious beliefs. The vaccine is for measles/mumps/rubella and is required by New York City law for all schoolchildren. It was developed from fetal tissue procured from abortions, hence the moral dilemma for practicing Christians. The woman, who remains anonymous, said her Christian beliefs against abortion compel her to have nothing to do with vaccines made using aborted fetal tissue. " Abortion is clearly a mortal sin and is [an] abhorrent act to any Christian, " the New York mom said in her petition for exemption, according to the New York Post. " The vaccine manufacturers " use of aborted fetal cells in its products and research means that I cannot associate with them or support them financially (by buying their products), for such support would make me complicit to their sin. " New York State Department of Education Commissioner Mary Ellen Elia concluded in the woman " s favor, explaining, " The weight of the evidence supports petitioner " s contentions that her opposition to the MMR vaccine stems from sincerely held religious beliefs. " Christianity has always opposed abortion, from the time of the New Testament. The Bible teaches that from conception, the womb holds a human person, calling pregnancy " to be with child " (Isaiah 7:14). Many biblical individuals are explicitly described as called or known from the womb, such as Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:4-5), Isaiah (Isaiah 44:2; 49:1), Job (Job 10:8-12), Paul (Gal. 1:15), and John the Baptist (Lk. 1:15). The New Testament also condemns abortifacients (Galatians 5:20; Revelation 9:21, 18:23, 21:8, 22:15). Other early Church documents condemning abortion include the Didache, the Epistle of Barnabas, the Epistle to Diognetus, the Apocalypse of Peter, St. Athenagoras " s writings, the letters of St. Clement of Alexandria, the Apostolic Constitutions, Tertullian, Hippolytus " s Apostolic Traditions. Additionally, every early Church council says likewise.
