Exhibition, " Overcoming: Russian Church and Soviet authorities " opens in Yaroslavl/Православие.Ru Exhibition, " Overcoming: Russian Church and Soviet authorities " opens in Yaroslavl Yaroslavl, October 8, 2013 The exhibition of exclusive historical materials, " Overcoming: the Russian Church and the Soviet authorities " began its work on October 8 in the gallery of the Dormition Cathedral, reports Sedmitza.ru . The exhibition with this name twice amazed the visitors both in Moscow and Italy and now it has come to Yaroslavl. From October 8 to 22, residents of Yaroslavl will be able to familiarize themselves with the exploits of Orthodoxy during the difficult Soviet period. Unique archival documents, displayed on the exhibition stands, are supplemented with local materials as well—extant items and documents of clergymen and their family members. The exhibition displays the objects that tell exclusively about the earthly life of the New Martyrs and Confessors of the Yaroslavl land. The materials that underlie the exhibition were prepared by St. Tikhon " s Orthodox University and the Museum of modern history of Russia. “Fortunately, the time of persecution of the Church in our country is now in the past. But that difficult time is still remembered by those few people who survived beyond repressions, after exiles in labor camps and prisons, together with their descendants. Our duty is to tell the story it in its true colors, " noted Archbishop Veniamin of Rybinsk and Uglich at the press-conference the day before opening of the conference in the Dormition Cathedral. “This exhibition enjoyed great success last autumn in Moscow: it was visited by more than 7,000 people, and it even had to be prolonged three times,” said a co-author of the " Overcoming " exhibition, senior researcher of the Modern Church History department of St. Tikhon " s University Lidia Golovkova. “In August of this year, in Rimini, the Italian version of this exhibition was presented and it broke all attendance records. And this is symbolic: " a time to gather stones " has come, and it means that interest in culture and history is growing in our society.

Orthodox cathedral in Nice opens after restoration Nice, January 19, 2016 © RIA-Novosti/Daniel Nizamutdinov.      One of the most beautiful Russian Orthodox churches outside Russia, the St. Nicholas Cathedral in Nice is opening on Tuesday after restoration which lasted more than eighteen months, reports a spokesman of RIA-Novosti . On Tuesday morning the clergy celebrated the lesser consecration of the church, served the Divine Liturgy and performed the Great Blessing of Waters. An official ceremony with participation by officials of the Executive Office of the Russian Federation’s President, local authorities and Russian diplomats was scheduled for 14.00 Moscow time on Tuesday. The St. Nicholas Cathedral is one of the main sights of Nice and one of the most popular historic monuments of Cote d’Azur (a coastal area of south-eastern France). Thus, according to the Nice-Matin French local daily newspaper, 273,000 people visited it in 2010. The history of the Russian St. Nicholas cathedral of Nice began early in the 20th century, when around 150 wealthy and powerful Russian families lived in the city. The community became so large that the small church in Rue Longchamp could no longer accommodate all the parishioners, so it was decided to build a new one. The funds used for building the new church went from the treasury of the Holy Emperor Nicholas II, from the local community, and the Russian nobility. The construction of the cathedral near Boulevard du Tzarewitch began in 1903 and was finished nine years later, in 1912. Built according to a design by architect Mikhail Preobrazhensky in the style typical for 16th century churches of Moscow and Yaroslavl, the cathedral has five domes. The distinctive feature of the cathedral is its decoration for which local materials were partially used: thanks to the combination of light brown bricks, milk-white capstone and blue-green ornamented tiles the cathedral, not losing its originality, blends well with the characteristic Mediterranean landscapes. The restoration work has been carried out not only in the cathedral, but also in the St. Nicholas Chapel built in 1869 on the site of the Villa Bermont where Cesarevitch Nicholas Alexandrovich, son of Emperor Alexander II, had died in 1865 of tuberculous meningitis. From 1923 the cathedral was managed by the Orthodox Association of Nice (ACOR) which has been under the Patriarchate of Constantinople since 1931. In 2013, after a long procedure, the court of cassation of France upheld the Russian Federation’s ownership of the cathedral. At that time it was it was it a nearly dangerous condition. St. Ephraim the Bishop of Pereyaslavl, Kiev Caves, Far Caves Commemorated on January 28 Photo: Days.Pravoslavie.Ru Saint Ephraim of the Caves, Bishop of Pereyaslavl, before his tonsure into monasticism, was treasurer and steward of household affairs at the court of the Kiev Great Prince Izyaslav (Demetrius) Yaroslavich (1054-1068). Weighed down by this noisy and bustling life and wishing to become a monk, he was accepted by Saint Anthony of the Kiev Caves and was tonsured by Saint Nikon (March 23). The enraged prince demanded that Ephraim return, threatening to lock him up in prison and to destroy the Monastery of the Caves. Saint Anthony and the brethren left the monastery and decided to go to another place. Izyaslav, however, feared the wrath of God. He took his wife’s advice and withdrew his forces from the monastery in disgrace. Saint Ephraim wished to go on pilgrimage to the holy places abroad. With the blessing of Saint Anthony, he journeyed to Constantinople and settled there in one of the monasteries. While in Constantinople, Saint Ephraim made a copy of the Studite monastic Rule, and took it to Kiev at the request of Saint Theodosius. As soon as he received the Rule, Saint Theodosius implemented it in his monastery. After the year 1072 Ephraim was made bishop in Pereyaslavl, with the title of Metropolitan. He adorned Pereyaslavl with many beautiful churches and public buildings, and he built stone walls around the city in the Greek manner. He built free hospices for the poor and travelers, and constructed several public bath-houses. In the year 1091, Saint Ephraim participated in the opening and solemn transfer of the relics of Saint Theodosius. A Life of Saint Ephraim existed in former times, but it has not survived. We find an account of him both in the Life of Saint Theodosius, and in the Russian Chronicles. A tale and encomium for Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker is ascribed to Saint Ephraim. Saint Ephraim died in the year 1098. He was buried in the Antoniev (Far) Caves of the Kiev Caves monastery. His memory is also celebrated on September 28 and on the second Sunday of Great Lent. Specifically, several media outlets drew attention to the fact that the cross was missing from the flag. The Moldovan leader, who is also the President of the republic’s chess federation, participated in the opening ceremony of the Women World Chess Championship in Iran last Friday, reports Sedmitza . Behind the president was the Moldovan flag, but noticeably absent was the cross in the eagle’s beak and the scepter. Journalists have accused the president of profaning the national symbol, recalling that he won in the recent presidential elections under promises of defending Orthodoxy and Christian values. Others, however, have noted that, in fact, the hosting side is responsible for supplying its visitors’ flags. “For reasons of political correctness, the leadership of Muslim countries remove crosses and other Christian symbols from the flags of other states. This is practiced in many states professing Islam, and, of course, the president has no relation to this practice,” notes the pro-president site “Notebook-Moldova.” A similar picture was published from a previous trip to Antalya, Turkey as well, also with the cross removed from the flag. President Dodon wrote on a social network page, “The president does not answer for the flag during a visit, but the receiving country. As a rule, the embassy deals with these issues, but Moldova has no embassy in Teran. We’re working it out. I’m going to have a meeting with the president of Iran. Nevertheless, Russian officials are discussing the possibility of opening Russian branches of Tatarstan traditional banks, which would operate under Islamic rules. In April, Chaplin congratulated Tatarstan " s government on their incorporation of Islamic banking and expressed hope for the creation of a similar Orthodox Financial System. Individual Approach The Orthodox Church believes the process of giving loans should be based on an individual approach, said Surmilo of the Moscow Patriarchate. " Now banks give loans to everybody and expect all of them to be returned in time without taking into account people " s financial situation or their personal circumstances, " Surmilo said. " The Orthodox Financial System sees social wealth as more important than personal wealth. " " A bank providing low-interest loans can compensate for lost profit, for example, by operations on the foreign exchange market or through investment, " Surmilo said. Vyalkin of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry said it was too early to predict how Orthodox banking would fare in Russia, as " so far the project has more questions than answers. Archive 24th International Theological Conference on Gospel and Mission According to St. Paul 4 July 2018 year 10:06 On June 26-28, 2018, the 24th International Theological Conference on Gospel and Mission According to St. Paul took place in Veria, Greece. The conference traditionally brings together prominent Orthodox theologians from around the world. With a blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the conference was attended by Archbishop Tikhon of Podolsk, administrator of the Diocese of Berlin and Germany. It was also attended by representatives of Local Orthodox Churches including Metropolitan Ambrose of Korea (Patriarchate of Constantinople), Metropolitan Seraphim of Zimbabwe and Angola (Patriarchate of Alexandria), Bishop Demetrios of Safita (Patriarchate of Antioch), Archbishop Theophylactus of Jordan (Patriarchate of Jerusalem), Metropolitan Gerasim of Zugdidi and Tsaish (Patriarchate of Georgia), Bishop Arsenije of Nis (Patriarchate of Serbia), Bishop Siluan of Gyula (Patriarchate of Romania), Metropolitan Panteleimon of Veroia, Naousa and Campania (Greek Orthodox Church). On the opening day June 26, Archbishop Tikhon read out a message of greetings sent to the conference by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Department for External Church Relations, on behalf of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill. The conference completed its work on June 29 with the festive Liturgy presided over by His Beatitude Theodoros, Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, who was assisted by hierarchs of Local Orthodox Churches and clergy of the Metropolis of Veroia of the Greek Orthodox Church. The festive event was also attended by Metropolitan Luka of Zaporozhe and Melitopol, who, in his talk with the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria, spoke about the church affairs in Ukraine. Patriarch Theodoros II stressed that the problems involved in this situation should be solved through fraternal discussion since it is only a common agreement that can help settle them. ‘We will pray to God, Who does everything for our benefit, that He may bring everybody to reason for the solution of these problems. If schismatic Denisenko wants to return to the fold of the Church, he should appeal to there from where he has departed. What has fallen away should come back to there from where it has fallen away. God is merciful towards those who repent. In the same way, the Church forgives and embraces all those who repent’, the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria said. Когда много детей возвращалось на обед из школы домой, молодой человек из-за нарушения скорости , не справился с управлением , выехал на пешеходную дорожку , как раз в этот момент. Дети успели разбежаться, только одна девочка не успела. Позднее она скончалась в госпитале. Теперь мы все плачем и многие говорят , где был Бог? Я сказала , если мы так говорим, значит у нас нет веры и мы не видим себя , свое духовное состояние, мы слепы. К сожалению , меня никто не поддержал. Этой девочке исполнилось недавно 8 лет и она была уже здесь ангелом. К сожалению , не знаю была ли она крещенная, скорее была католичка. Прояснившееся постперестроечное помутнение в сознании показало, что мое мировоззрение немного перекошено. Читая ваши статьи вижу, что знаний у меня никаких нет и все мое мирровозрение перевернуто с ног на голову. Слава Богу что появился свет в конце тоннеля,правда шагать до него ещё долго.

St. Tikhon’s Choirs Perform Russian Orthodox Sacred Music at Eastern University      On Sunday, November 6th, a combined choir — led by Benedict Sheehan of St. Tikhon’s Monastery and Seminary — including St. Tikhon’s Seminary Mission Choir and members of the St. Tikhon Monastery Choir, offered a concert of Russian Orthodox sacred music exploring the biblical foundations of Orthodox Christian Liturgy. The concert was co-hosted by St. Tikhon’s Seminary and the Center for Orthodox Thought and Culture at Eastern University Christian College. The choir made a dramatic entrance into the McInnis Auditorium by singing the Opening Psalm (103/104) of Vespers from memory as they took the stage. The program included a variety of settings of the Psalms and hymns from Vespers, Matins, and the Divine Liturgy. The program of Psalms and Hymns was augmented by a brief series of comments by both Archpriest Steven Voytovich, Seminary Dean, and Seraphim Danckaert, Director of Mission Advancement. Fr. Steven quoted from the journal of the 4th century pilgrim, Egeria, as she witnessed liturgical services at the Holy Resurrection Church in Jerusalem: “What I found most impressive about all this was that the psalms and antiphons they used are always appropriate, whether at night or in the early morning, at the day prayers at the sixth and ninth hours, or at vespers. Everything is suitable, appropriate, and relevant to what is being done.” Seraphim Danckaert, Director of Mission Advancement, reflected that the Psalms are shared both in the church and at home as part of the earliest texts that form one’s spiritual life in the Orthodox Faith. Dr. Cyril Gary Jenkins, a member of St. Paul Antiochian Church in Emmaus, PA who has taught history at Eastern University for 20 years, was instrumental in developing and launching the Center for Orthodox Thought and Culture at the Univesity. He oversees a minor, by the same name, offered at the school. Dr. Jenkins was present for the concert and shared in the fellowship and conversation after the concert, as was Dr. Timothy Becker, also from Eastern University, who offered one of the evening lecture series presentations at St. Tikhon’s in October. The concert benefitted St. Tikhon’s Seminary. The seminary, in turn, is grateful for the many sponsors who made this performance possible, including The Philadelphia Trust Company, and Renovation Angel as presenting sponsors!
