Archive Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk delivers a lecture at the University of Belgrade 20 February 2020 year 13:24 On 18 February 2020, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate department for external church relations (DECR), who is in Belgrade on a two-day visit with a blessing of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and invitation of Patriarch Irenaeus of Serbia, visited the department of Orthodox theology of the University of Belgrade to deliver a lecture on “Orthodox Liturgy as a School of Theology and Theonoesis”. The dean of the faculty, Rev. Dr Zoran Rankovic, addressed the high guest with a speech of greetings. The lecture was attended by a great number of professors and students of the University of Belgrade, of which Metropolitan Hilarion is an honorary doctor. Among the attendees were Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral, Metropolitan Porfirije of Zagreb and Ljubljana, Bishops Irenaeus of Bac and John of Shumadia, and Mr. D. Kruglov, cultural attache, Russian embassy in Belgrade. In his lecture, Metropolitan Hilarion noted in particular that the liturgy brings the faithful into mysterious communion with the Lord and imparts them the grace-giving gifts of the Holy Spirit. His Eminence also stressed that the Orthodox liturgy is a synthesis of arts as everything in it is intertwined and everything has its meaning. The church architecture and frescoes, icon-painting, liturgical texts and church music – all this is merged into a one service of God. Precisely for this reason the Orthodox liturgy does not allow of arbitrary interventions and interpretations. ‘I wish that we all could love and study our Orthodox liturgy and cherish this treasure given by our forefathers, that we could love our churches and adorn them and hand down our love of the Orthodox liturgy to the generations of the faithful to come – the generations of our children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren’, he said. After the lecture, Metropolitan Hilarion answered questions from the audience. His Eminence presented the theological department with his book “Liturgy. Historical and Theological Commentaries to the Liturgies of John Chrysostom and Basil the Great”. “In this book, I spoke about the history of the Liturgy, considered its text and tried to give a theological interpretation to each word,” he said and expressed hope that this study would be in demand to Serbian readers as well. After the lecture, Metropolitan Hilarion had a brief meeting with the dean and professors of the faculty. DECR Communication Service /Patriarchia.ru Календарь ← 7 December 2023 year

Archive Metropolitan Mitrofan detained by Ukrainian police 18 February 2019 year 20:12 On February 18, 2019, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church information-education department reported with reference to the website of the Gorlovka diocese that Metropolitan Mitrofan of Gorlovka and Slavyansk was detained at a checkpoint and convoyed to the Slavyansk municipal police office. According to the diocesan press service, one of the internal Ukrainian checkpoints carried out a regular inspection of documents after which it was announced that Metropolitan Mitrofan of Gorlovka and Slavyansk was detained ‘for identification’. To the question about the cause of the detention, the police officer answered that, according to the Ukrainian Law ‘On the National Police’, he had a right to detain anyone for a three-hour period without charge. The hierarch was searched and an operation squad was summoned to convoy him to the Slavyansk municipal police office. The investigator had to let Metropolitan Mitrofan go. ‘I believe it was an attempt of the authorities to put pressure on me’, the archpastor said. When his Eminence went out of the office, he saw a multitude of clergy and laity who came to support him. ‘I had a feeling that now I could put on my mantle and begin celebrating the liturgy. ‘I am very grateful to both the clergy and laity for the support and prayers they organized’, the ruling bishop of Gorlovka said. Metropolitan Mitrofan had been going back to the Gorlovka diocesan administration from the village of Stavka, Limansk district, Odessa region, where he had celebrated the Divine Liturgy on the patronal feast of the church of St. Theodosius of Chernigov. The day before, he chaired a meeting of the Gorlovka diocesan clergy and parish council chairpersons, at the St. Sergius Convent. The meeting expressed unanimous support for His Beatitude Onufriy, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine, and stated the desire of the communities to remain in the fold of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Many Christians think that Christians celebrate Christ’s birth on December 25th because the church fathers appropriated the date of a pagan festival. Almost no one minds, except for a few groups on the fringes of American Evangelicalism, who seem to think that this makes Christmas itself a pagan festival. But it is perhaps interesting to know that the choice of December 25th is the result of attempts among the earliest Christians to figure out the date of Jesus’ birth based on calendrical calculations that had nothing to do with pagan festivals. Rather, the pagan festival of the “Birth of the Unconquered Son” instituted by the Roman Emperor Aurelian on 25 December 274, was almost certainly an attempt to create a pagan alternative to a date that was already of some significance to Roman Christians. Thus the “pagan origins of Christmas” is a myth without historical substance. From this piece, should you be interested in the details you can access the academic literature. But returning to the Telegraph piece, there are some fascinating things raised in the pope’s new book — and smart fellow that he is it came out just in time for Black Friday. There is an interesting historical and religious debate mentioned by the Telegraph story, the location of Jesus’ birth: Nazareth v. Bethlehem, but that is passed over in favor of the “striking” news about the calendar question. Given the excitement over the women bishops’ vote in the Church of England the reporter may have needed to “sex-up” his story to find space in the newspaper for another religion news item. Whatever the reason, the story is a disappointment. The Telegraph is supposed to be a “quality” newspaper, but this story is worthy of the tabloids. Get Religion 24 ноября 2012 г. Pristina: Orthodox chapel turned into public restroom; Bishop: Lack of basic civilization norms      A recently renovated and cleaned cemetery chapel in Pristina was turned into a public restroom and garbage dump, and several Orthodox graves are overgrown with weeds, said the Dioceses of Raska and Prizren. Such a situation exists despite the fact that a municipal community service is allegedly in charge of taking care of the cemetery and that a paid cemetery guard is provided, says the Diocese. “During the course of the visit to the Orthodox cemetery in Pristina, priest Sasa Mitrovic encountered a sad and sickening picture. The recently renovated and cleaned cemetery chapel was turned into a public restroom and garbage dump, and several graves are overgrown with weeds,” says the diocese’s statement. These photographs show a similar situation as in the Temple of Christ the Savior in the city center, where the Diocese of Raska and Prizren has recently decided to clean its temple, to which the municipality of Pristina and sent responded with an inspection (without a warrant) which banned further cleaning of the temple. “Given that Mitrovdan Memorial ay is near and that numerous believers from Pristina, of which most are not able to live freely in their home town and return to it, will visit their graves. The diocese will have to organize the cleaning of both the cemetery chapel and the cemetery,” says the statement. The diocese raises the question whether the mayor of Pristina will once again be eager to send an inspection and prevent the cleaning of the temple as he was so far in not undertaking any measures to have Christian Orthodox buildings used as public restrooms. Bishop Teodosije said that it is painful and difficult that in the “capital city of Kosovo” in the 21st century Christian buildings are used as public restrooms. “It is a frightening reflection of neglect and lack of basic civilization norms. " Mayor of Pristina Shpend Ahmeti recently said in an interview with KiM radio that the municipality is not responsible for checking whether places of worship are desecrated and damaged, so nothing was done during the desecration and arson in the Temple of Christ the Savior. However, as Ahmeti said, the municipality has responsibility to prevent any kind of work in these facilities (including cleaning and painting). Such abuses of religious freedoms are a disgrace for Kosovo society,” said Teodosije, stressing that no one can prevent the Church from preserving the dignity of its facilities from those who persistently desecrate them. Another Christian killed and five wounded in Egypt/Православие.Ru Another Christian killed and five wounded in Egypt Cairo, January 12, 2010 On the same day that Egypt recalled its ambassador to the Vatican over the Pope " s declaration of solidarity with Copts, another attack, in all likelihood inspired by Islamic fundamentalism, has resulted in the death of one Christian and the injury of five others, reports Asia News .  In a statement, the Vatican said it " fully supports " the will of the Egyptian government to " avoid an escalation of tensions for religious reasons ... and appreciates the governments efforts in this direction. " The statement follows a meeting between the Vatican’s " foreign minister " , Msgr. Dominique Mamberti, and the Egyptian ambassador, Lamia Aly Hamada Mekhemar, who in turn said she was " expressing the concerns of his government in this difficult time. " Meanwhile, another serious incident occurred on the railway line linking Cairo to Assiut. A police officer, Amer Abdel Zaher Ashur, took the train to Salamut, about 200 km south of Cairo, and opened fire with his police weapon. He killed a 71-year-old Coptic Christian, Fathi Said Ebeid, and wounded his wife of 61 and four others. Medical sources say that all the wounded, two of them in serious condition, are Christians. The police officer, who was not in uniform, tried to flee but was arrested in the station.   He was questioned about the motives for his attack, but the investigators are maintaining secrecy on the outcome of the interview. Ayman Mohyeldin, Cairo correspondent for Al Jazeera, said that the authorities do not seem eager to disclose the reasons for the attack. " The bombing of Alexandria is on everyone’s mind. There will be many questions about whether the Salamut attack has religious roots. " Bishop Morcos, bishop of the Coptic Church in Salamut, claims to have spoken to some witnesses of the attack. " This madman went back and forth on the train looking for Christians. Seeing a group of women and girls who were not wearing a veil, he thought they were Christian and fired, shouting " Allahu Akbar " (God is great).  " Following the incident, a few hundred Copts gathered in front of the Good Shepherd Hospital in Salamut, where the injured are hospitalized, and clashed with police, who responded with tear gas. 13 января 2011 г. ... Tweet Нравится Sunday of Orthodoxy Liturgy and Procession at Vatopedi Monastery (VIDEO) Source: Pemptousia March 15, 2017 The first Sunday of Great Lent is known as the Sunday or Triumph of Orthodoxy, in which victory over the iconoclasts, who opposed the veneration of the holy icons, is celebrated. The Church teaches that we can depict Christ in iconography because He became incarnate, taking on a visible body. Thus the icons are a safeguard to the dogma of the Incarnation. On this Sunday we process with holy icons, professing the triumph of Truth over falsehood. This video presents highlights of the Divine Liturgy and procession with the holy icons on the Sunday of Orthodoxy, 2017, at the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi. Pemptousia 23 марта 2017 г. Elder Ephraim came to America in response to the pleas of the faithful to provide this guidance, but in doing so many questions have been raised concerning the nature of Orthodox monasticism and teachings. To assess his role and importance for American Orthodoxy it is helpful to investigate his life and spiritual development, which will provide insight into him whom Metropolitan Hierotheos Vlachos says “received fire, and ... has imparted this fire ... to the Church in America that has great need of it.” The Great and Holy Monastery of Vatopaidi The Great and Holy Monastery of Vatopaidi December 17/30 the holy Orthodox Church commemorates Sts. In Alekseev’s view, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate today has the maximum freedom possible, possessing “the fullness of a self-governing Church.” Even bishops elected by the UOC-MP are not formally confirmed by the Moscow Synod. “It is, in fact, basically an independent Church,” he said, adding that such freedom would never happen under Constantinople. According to the foundation head, there are two autonomous Churches under Constantinople—the Finnish and Crete Churches—but in practice they exist in a rigid, centralized system where even the smallest questions are approved in the Phanar. Alekseev noted that the policy and desire of obtaining an autocephalous Church, which has existed in Ukraine since the first president, Leonid Kravchuk, is used politically in the geopolitical sphere to attract global players, “primarily the United States.” For their part, the representatives of the Constantinople Patriarchate have earlier declared that they will not recognize Ukraine’s autocephaly without the permission of the Moscow Patriarchate. The international public Foundation for the Unity of Orthodox Peoples was formed in April 1995 with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexey II of Moscow, with Patriarch Kirill as the current Chairman of the Board. The foundation “was established and operates in order to strengthen the ties of the spiritual brotherhood of nations professing Orthodoxy, and to consolidate and revitalize the efforts of the international Orthodox community in works of cultural and social cooperation.” 31 марта 2017 г. скрыть способы оплаты скрыть способы оплаты Смотри также Комментарии Asterix 1 апреля 2017, 12:00 At least what comes to Orthodox Church of Finland under Constantinople, this article misses the mark badly.
