Patriarch Kirill – Global Order to Destroy the Orthodox Church Implemented in Ukraine Source: Interfax (Russian) His Holiness, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, explained the actions of the Patriarchate of Constantinople as a global order to destroy the “island of freedom” in Ukraine, meaning the Orthodox Church. “The stakes are very high, and the order to destroy the unity of our Church is an order that has a global dimension. This is not just a fight for jurisdiction, this is a fight for the destruction of the only powerful Orthodox force in the world. When we’re talking about 150 million [Orthodox believers], this is truly so,” Patriarch Kirill said at a meeting with participants in the Faith and Word festival in Moscow on Tuesday. “Certainly, someone had to strike a blow to this island of freedom. Why do I call Orthodoxy an island of freedom? Because we are free from global brainwashing and the dominance of someone else’s thoughts over us,” the Primate added. Thus, in his opinion, “the tragedy of Ukraine goes beyond the boundaries of the political field, it has a mystical dimension”. His Holiness, Patriarch Kirill, also spoke about the preparation for his closed meeting with Patriarch Bartholomew in Istanbul on August 31, which he said was the last attempt to diplomatically resolve the conflict with Constantinople over Ukraine. According to the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, he suggested that Patriarch Bartholomew and he meet on neutral territory, such as the Swiss town of Chambesy, but Patriarch Bartholomew insisted on meeting in his residence in Istanbul. Patriarch Kirill said  some people in Moscow tried to talk him out of the visit, because they were certain it would be humiliating for him. “I realized that this was [Constantinople’s] desire to cut us down to size. But this is [only] humiliating to those who pay attention to such trifles. I am ready to walk anywhere in order to prevent such developments of events that we are witnessing today,” he admitted.

Sacred Sound And Sheer Beauty September 6, 2007 In 1917, the workers’ paradise that was the Soviet Union forcibly removed the monks of the Moscow Sretensky Monastery and converted the 14th-century building into a torture chamber, sending the residents either to prison camp or death for living their lives according to the word of God. Not until 1994 was the place re-established as a religious institution and the present a cappella choir founded. Concert at Avery Fishery Hall, photo by Michael Rodionov/Pravoslavie.Ru Concert at Avery Fishery Hall, photo by Michael Rodionov/Pravoslavie.Ru On the occasion of the reunification of the Orthodox Church within Russia to the greater Russian Orthodox Church, the 41-member choir is touring the world, singing primarily in sacred spaces but also taking some time out for public concerts. On Tuesday evening at Avery Fisher Hall, there was no room left for procrastinators, and the management had to provide seats on the stage to accommodate the overflow crowd. English was clearly not the first language of most of these listeners, and there were more than a few hirsute men wearing flowing black robes. What they experienced was a thrilling evening of highly disciplined music making. The sacred side was represented by chants that ran the gamut from ancient to modern. «Stichera on the Dormition of Theotokos» was an extended plain-chant, while «Now the Powers of Heaven» was dramatically ethereal, and featured a truly impressive ensemble sound with eloquent crescendos. Concert at Avery Fishery Hall, photo by Michael Rodionov/Pravoslavie.Ru Concert at Avery Fishery Hall, photo by Michael Rodionov/Pravoslavie.Ru «God Is With Us» had a 19th-century feel to it, with dramatic twists and turns like a sacred piece by Rossini or Verdi, while Piotr Dinev’s «It Is Truly Meet» harkened back to that timeless, hollow sound that, as a non-Russian, I can only compare to groundings in art, such as the music of the Old Believers in Modest Mussorgsky’s «Khovanchina.» Certainly there was a palpable sense of holiness that recalled many generations of martyrs.

This marks the beginning of a three-day long feast by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, celebrating not only the centennary, but also the 130th anniversary of St. Alexander Nevsky’s first foundational stone and the 98th birthday of Patriarch Maxim.

Archive His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and His Holiness Patriarch Neophyte of Bulgaria meet with Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov 4 March 2018 year 02:00 On 3 March 2018, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and His Holiness Patriarch Neophyte of Bulgaria met with Mr. Boyko Borissov, Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria. The Prime Minister met the Primates at the entrance to the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bulgaria. Mr. Borissov warmly greeted His Holiness Patriarch Kirill and His Holiness Patriarch Neophyte and noted that the Russian and the Bulgarian Orthodox Churches had made an enormous contribution to the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman yoke during the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-78. “Our peoples have excellent relations, and your visit confirms this fact,” the Prime Minister said, addressing the Primate of the Russian Church. As His Holiness Patriarch Kirill emphasized during the meeting, the history of the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman yoke and the participation of Russia and the Russian soldiers in the hard struggle for national liberation proves that the Orthodox faith, uniting the two fraternal peoples, is a great spiritual force. His Holiness Patriarch Kirill also noted with satisfaction that these days the relationships between the Russian and the Bulgarian Orthodox Churches are developing within the same tradition which united the peoples of Russia and Bulgaria for centuries. “Having come to Bulgaria and having been to Shipka today, I could see with my own eyes how this tradition continues. I saw flags of Bulgaria and Russia on Shipka. I did not see other flags. I think that this tradition, which originated in the depths of people’s life, is a great force. May, by the will of God, this force always unite the peoples of Russia and Bulgaria, preserving them in peace and like-mindedness, and may the relationships between the two countries develop in view of the real moods of people,” His Holiness said. “I was happy to see joy on people’s faces today, to feel the amazing spiritual atmosphere, and to hear the wonderful words which truly show that Bulgaria cherishes grateful memory of the sacrificial heroic deed of the Russian people,” Patriarch Kirill added. The Bulgarian Prime Minister noted that the government devotes much attention to developing church life and gives grants to restore monasteries and churches in the country. “We restore and build many churches which were blown up, and we see that our activities inspire respect among people,” Mr. Borissov said. Archive ROCOR Synod of Bishops holds regular session 19 February 2020 year 11:41 On February 18, 2020, a regular session of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia took place under the chairmanship of the ROCOR First Hierarch, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York. Taking part in the meeting were Metropolitan Mark of Berlin and Germany, Archbishop Kyrill of San Francisco and Western America, Archbishop Gabriel of Montreal and Canada, Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, and Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan. Archbishop Peter of Chicago and Mid-America was unable to participate due to diocesan matters. The Synod members heard a brief report from Metropolitan Mark of Berlin and Germany on the activities of the ROCOR Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem, and considered an appeal from the Union of Descendants of the Russians of Gallipoli, seeking special prayers for the White Army soldiers on the centenary of their exodus from Russia. The Synod of Bishops blessed the prayerful commemoration on Saturday, November 21, this year. In view of the need to appoint a new ROCOR’s representative to the Church and Public Council for Commemoration of Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church under the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, the Synod designated Archpriest Nikolai Artemoff, secretary of the German diocese, as new representative. Having discussed the issues raised in a report of Archpriest Andre Papkov, president of the Synodal Liturgical Music Committee, the Synod decided to rename the school of church singing headed by him into the Metropolitan Laurus Synodal School of Church Singing. Noting the success of the recent conference held at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God in London, England, the Synod blessed the establishment of a special committee under the auspices of the Liturgical Music Committee with the view of coordinating events in Western Europe. The committee will work under the guidance of Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe. Acting on a request from Archbishop Peter of Chicago and Mid-America, the Synod of Bishops granted to the St John the Theologian Skete, formerly a metochion of the Holy Cross Monastery in West Virginia, the status of an independent monastery. The Synod of Bishops also deliberated on a number of disciplinary matters within the Church, and considered appeals from the ruling bishops for ecclesiastical awards to their clergymen and laity. The meeting concluded with the singing of “It is Truly Meet,” website of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia reports. Tweet Нравится Metropolitan of Veroia: Law allowing abortion is destroying mankind Athens, October 15, 2016      Metropolitan Panteleimon of the Greek Orthodox Church spoke to the film crew of sobor.by about his stance towards the initiative to ban abortion in Russia. “Regarding the law allowing abortion—this law is destroying mankind. Our Local Church, and every Church of Christ has always stood against the legalization of abortion. And although the government has legalized abortion, we do not believe it is legitimate. We honor the law of God, and according to the law of God, abortion is murder. Inasmuch as this action is murder, it destroys human life, and the Church stands against it. The Church always clearly expresses its position, and can do so in every homily. But, unfortunately, these laws, especially those which have come to us from the West, ruin our people. Abortion is condemned by the fathers of the Church and is condemned by Church canons. But firstly, it is condemned by God. But despite the Church’s ban, unfortunately, a law allowing abortion was passed. May God grant that one day this law here and in Russia would be abolished. And, truly, abortion is not just a spiritual sin, but it is the destruction of the state itself, which is weakened by it. Therefore in Greece, as many believe, within a few years there will be only the elderly, and the young will be quite few, because there are so many abortions. They kill thousands and thousands of people, like in war.” Translated by Jesse Dominick Pravoslavie.ru 15 октября 2016 г. Wonderworking Icon from Romania’s Sihstria Monastery Carried in Procession against Coronavirus and Drought Source: Basilica.ro On Bright Tuesday, the wonderworking Axion Estin (It is Truly Meet) Icon of the Mother of God from Romania’s famous Sihstria Monastery was carried in procession, with the monks entreating God for relief from the coronavirus pandemic and drought.  The procession took place after the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, with the monks stopping at six points to offer prayers and litanies for the driving away of the pandemic, the healing of the sick, and for rain. The procession began and ended at the monastery cathedral, with stops at the cemetery, the agricultural fields, the cell of the greatly-revered Elder Cleopa (Ilie), the guesthouse, and the old church. The holy march was held, “To ask for God’s help and the mercy of the Mother of God in order to get through these difficult times, to get out of this state of sorrow, to pray more together, and to get out of the monotony of the present situation through a more intense prayer, with more hope,” explained the abbot, Archimandrite Arsenie Popa. The Sihstria Axion Estin Icon was painted by a Romanian monk on Mt. Athos in the early 20th century. It is normally housed in the nave of the old church at the monastery. Elder Cleopa was witness to a number of miracles worked by the Mother of God through her precious icon. Code for blog Since you are here… …we do have a small request. Sectarianism in Orthodoxy and Orthodoxy in Sectarianism It is erroneous to think that all Orthodox are in reality not sectarians and that all sectarians are in reality not Orthodox. Not every Orthodox in name is so in spirit, and not every sectarian in name is so in spirit, and, especially at the present time, it is possible to meet “Orthodox” who are in fact sectarians at heart: fanatic, unloving, narrow minded, persistent in human precision, not hungering or thirsting after God’s truth, but gorged with their own presumptuous truth, strictly judging others from the summit of this their imaginary truth dogmatically correct from the outside, but lacking origin in the Spirit. And, conversely, it is possible to meet a sectarian who apparently does not understand the meaning of the Orthodox worship of God in Spirit and in Truth, who doesn’t “recognize” this or that expression of ecclesiastical truth, but who in fact conceals within himself much that is truly divine, who is truly filled with love in Christ, truly a brother to his fellow man. And the existence of such variety in Christian society does not allow a shallow approach to the problem of interfaith relations. Sectarians sin in their failure to understand Orthodoxy, but we Orthodox also do not follow our own Orthodox teachings in not understanding sectarians who are at times surprisingly fervent and pure in their persistent pursuit of the Lord towards a life in Him alone. The narrow, arrogant, ailing reason of mankind, not transfigured in the Spirit of God, aspires identically to division and seeks a cause for it, whoever this reason might belong to – Orthodox or sectarian. We Orthodox believe and see in spirit that we possess the fullness of the truth as can be humanly expressed. But that does not mean at all that we are already following that fullness of truth and that completeness has filled us. We sometimes possess it only on our lips, or think that it should replace in our eye the beam of our spiritual sloth. But all that is far from what should be. We possess the truth, and in its fullness, but we do not know how or refuse to live it, and often simply do not aspire to live it, because it overly places too many restriction on our “old self”. Yet we are not against taking pride or glorying in our orthodoxy.
