On Misogyny and Anti-Semitism The questions of anti-Semitism and misogyny require circumspect comment. The patristic writers are perceived by some to be incurably anti-Semitic or misogynous or both. 1 would like to briefly attempt a cautious apologia for the ancient Christian writers, leaving details to others more deliberate efforts. I know how hazardous this is, especially when done briefly. But it has become such a stumbling block to some of our readers that it prevents them even from listening to the ancient ecumenical teachers. The issue deserves some reframing and careful argumentation. Although these are challengeable assumptions and highly controverted, it is my view that modern racial anti-Semitism was not in the minds of the ancient Christian writers. Their arguments were not framed in regard to the hatred of a race, but rather the place of the elect people of God, the Jews, in the history of the divine-human covenant that is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Patristic arguments may have had the unintended effect of being unfair to women according to modern standards, but their intention was to understand the role of women according to apostolic teaching. This does not solve all of the tangled moral questions regarding the roles of Christians in the histories of anti-Semitism and misogyny, which require continuing fair-minded study and clarification. Whether John Chrysostom or Justin Martyr were anti-Semitic depends on whether the term anti-Semitic has a racial or religious-typological definition. In my view, the patristic texts that appear to modern readers to be anti-Semitic in most cases have a typological reference and are based on a specific approach to the interpretation of Scripture – the analogy of faith – which assesses each particular text in relation to the whole trend of the history of revelation and which views the difference between Jew and Gentile under christological assumptions and not merely as a matter of genetics or race. Even in their harshest strictures against Judaizing threats to the gospel, they did not consider Jews as racially or genetically inferior people, as modern anti-Semites are prone to do. Even in their comments on Paul’s strictures against women teaching, they showed little or no animus against the female gender as such, but rather exalted women as “the glory of man.” Compare the writings of Rosemary Radford Ruether and David C. Ford10 on these perplexing issues. Ruether steadily applies modern criteria of justice to judge the inadequacies of the ancient Christian writers. Ford seeks to understand the ancient Christian writers empathically from within their own historical assumptions, limitations, scriptural interpretations and deeper intentions. Orthodox publications in Chinese presented at Beijing Book Fair Beijing, September 2, 2012 As part of the International Book Fair in Beijing there was a roundtable " The Russian book in China: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. " The round table was devoted to the translation and publication of Russian literature in China. The round table was attended by G.M. Gupalo, chief editor of " Dar " [ " Gift " ] publishing house; by Fr. Dionisy Pozdnyaev, parish priest of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul Church in Hong Kong; and by Zhang Baichun, professor of Beijing Normal University. The discussion covered various aspects of the history of Russian books in China — the events of the early period associated with the interaction of Russia and China during the Qing Dynasty, publications undertaken by the Beijing Mission, the publication of works of Russian Sinologists in China. Roundtable discussion topics touched the little explored period of publishing by the Russian emigration in Beijing, Harbin and Shanghai during the " 20- " 40 of the last century, the question of the interrelation of the cultures of China and Russia, as reflected in the literary experience of the Russian emigration in China. And systematic research of this layer of culture is an important and interesting challenge for both Chinese Russianists, and for Russian Sinologists. Topical issues of modern translations of Russian literature into Chinese, publishing trends, current directions in the development of interests of Chinese readers were discussed by roundtable participants. The discussion also touched upon the problems facing the promotion of Russian literature in China, among which the main ones are: specialists-interpreters, the need to increase the level of professionalism of literary critics, translation of Russian classics of modern literature. A separate and interesting direction of the round-table discussion was the discussion of issues of translating and publishing in China books which introduce the reader to Orthodoxy in the Chinese language. During the roundtable publications by Orthodox parish in Hong Kong were presented. Roundtable participants and book fair guests were given tens of titles of books, the publication of which is of interest to a wide range of Chinese readers, and responds to the academic demands of Chinese scholars. St. Ambrose censured judges who issued the death penalty, St. Basil excommunicated soldiers who killed in battle, and St. John Chrysostom demanded that the political establishment redistribute its wealth on behalf of impoverished laborers and refugees who had no legal standing. Not only do these issues remain with us today, these interventions bear witness to the fact that the saints did not jettison their moral convictions for the sake of political expediency or predetermined alliances. It was during St. Ambrose " s tenure as bishop that the emperor Theodosius first declared Christianity the official religion of the empire. Theodosius was also responsible for orchestrating the Second Ecumenical Council. But neither endeavor did anything to deter St. Ambrose from repeatedly condemning the emperor for behavior and policies that contravened the Gospel. The political, social, and economic setting of Orthodox Christian history is certainly different than our contemporary context. And, of course, we face a great number of political and social questions for which there is no unambiguous answer from Christian thought or practice. But there are some important lessons from the Orthodox Christian experience that would benefit all American Christians who hope to be active in the public arena. Most importantly, we learn that the engagement in politics should be motivated by a concern for the public good for its own sake. We also learn that the most significant Christian thinkers were those who maintained their moral credibility rather than strike deals with the politically powerful. Although the political right supports the death penalty, the left not only supports abortion but abortion as a means of birth control. This women " s " right " should be up until the baby is born is the equivalent of murder. At least in the death penalty the accused as a trial and several years of appeals before the sentence is carried out. The number of those who are executed are few. Those who have been murdered in the womb number in the millions. I oppose the death penalty but I think I " ll stick with the political right that by the evidence alone values human life more dearly than the left.

The Russian Orthodox Church considers it to be an important and timely initiative of Lithuania, the current chairman of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), to hold a special meeting dedicated to the position of Christians in the OSCE region. We value highly also the endeavours of the Holy See, which has taken an active part in organizing the event. We believe that the time has come to discuss openly the violation of the rights of Christians and respond to this challenge through our common efforts. For decades now the encroachment upon of the rights of religious minorities has been widely discussed on the European continent. Yet, practice shows that the position of the majority, which is comprised of traditional Christians in almost all the OSCE participating states, is far from being the best guarantee of their rights. The most convincing example of this was the way the European Court of Human Rights conducted the Lautsi v. Italy case on the question of the presence of crucifixes in Italy " s schools. The resolution of this problem in favour of Christians was possible thanks only to the united efforts of a whole number of countries that spoke out against the Court " s original decision. Among the countries united in support of Christian identity in Europe were Russia, Armenia, Bulgaria, Greece, Lithuania, Malta, and others. This was an unprecedented for our times fact of multilateral cooperation on the grounds of common Christian values.

Статья посвящена вопросу цели жизни христианина и путей его подвига. Данный вопрос успешно раскрывает один из наиболее значимых представителей христианского наследия – святитель Феофан Затворник Вышенский . Делает он это в своих письмах к разным мирским лицам, среди которых большинство составляют его духовные чада. Эту проблему, без сомнения, можно отнести к одной из самых важных в жизни любого православного христианина. Среди адресатов святителя встречаются как мирские, так и духовные лица. Епископ Феофан в полной мере раскрывает обозначенные проблемные вопросы духовной жизни. Путь раскрытия – четкое и ясное разграничение целей, методов и средств достижения заявленных вопросов. Святитель делает анализ причинно-следственных связей действий православного христианина в земной жизни. В конце каждого своего доказательства епископ Феофан старается делать небольшой вывод. Безусловно, святитель, как ревностный пастырь и верный сын Православной Церкви, обращается к тексту Священного Писания , а также к своему личному духовному опыту. The article is devoted to the question of the purpose of a Christian’s life and the ways of his feat. This question is successfully solved by one of the most significant representatives of the Christian heritage – St. Theophan the Recluse of Vyshensky. He does this in his letters to various lay people, among whom the majority are his spiritual children. This problem, without a doubt, can be attributed to one of the most important in the life of any Orthodox Christian. Among the addressees of the saint there are both lay and spiritual persons. Bishop Theophan fully reveals the identified problematic issues of spiritual life. The way of disclosure is a clear and clear delineation of the goals, methods and means of achieving the stated issues. The saint makes an analysis of the causeand-effect relationships of the actions of an Orthodox Christian in earthly life. At the end of each of his proofs, Bishop Theophan tries to draw a small conclusion. Of course, the saint, as a zealous pastor and faithful son of the Orthodox Church, refers to the text of the Holy Scripture, and also, to his personal spiritual experience. The article presents the conclusions of researchers who turned to the legacy of St. Theophan with regard to practical issues of the life of an Orthodox Christian.

In this vein, Fr. Dmitry Smirnov, chairman of the Patriarchal Commission for Family and Protection of Motherhood and Childhood, noting IVF’s low success rate, terms it “absolutely unacceptable,” in that spare embryos are created and destroyed. He also speaks against surrogacy as “an affront to the human dignity of the hired mother,” and against the practice of donating sperm: “Marriage is a mystery of the two, in which there is no place for a third party.” In this point, Fr. Dimitry follows the Holy Synod’s 2000 document “The Basis of the Social Concept of the Russian Orthodox Church,” which states , The Church cannot regard as morally justified the ways to childbirth disagreeable with the design of the Creator of life. If a husband or a wife is sterile and the therapeutic and surgical methods of infertility treatment do not help the spouses, they should humbly accept childlessness as a special calling in life. In these cases, pastoral counsel should consider the adoption of a child by the spouses’ mutual consent. Among the admissible means of medical aid may be an artificial insemination by the husband’s germ cells, since it does not violate the integrity of the marital union and does not differ basically from the natural conception and takes place in the context of marital relations. However, the document goes on to state, “Manipulations involved in the donation of germ cells do violate the integrity of a person and the unique nature of marital relations by allowing of a third party to interfere… The use of donor material undermines the foundations of family relationships, since it presupposes that a child has, in addition to the “social” parents, the so-called biological ones” (XII.4). “In the end, every person, caught in some situation, is faced with the question of what is moral or immoral,” Met.
