Redkova The article seeks to investigate the exegetic literature of the first half of the 12th century in order to understand how the City of God was imagined and understood in the monastic theology of this time. A particular flowering of exegesis was taking place in Europe at this time, theologians have engaged with the understanding the world and God, the idea of Jerusalem was often associated in the theology with the Church Reform. The interpretation of the Bible became an important tool to perceive the process that shaped the monastic communities of this time. The research is going to explore how the «modem» exegesis of the City of God and the reception of the Augustine " s teaching both elucidate and conceptualize the idea of the reform in the 12th century. The analysis of the history of exegetical interpretation of the City of God is to be combined with the search for the paradigm shift in the monastic conception (f.e. Jerusalem as civitas Dei, Bethelem as civitas Dei). The principal questions are how do different but fixed by the Augustine " s authority ways of interpreting Scriptures give rise to different concepts of the civitas Dei, how have theologians of the reform gone about interpreting the City and in what ways might the chosen strategies of interpretation connect local and universal, earthy and spiritual, material and imagined spaces, a small cloister Stella and glorious city of Jerusalem, elucidating their own vision of the City of God.

DECR chairman reads lecture on Orthodox-Catholic relations at Moscow theological schools November 2, 2010 On November 1, 2010, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relation, read a lecture on relations between Orthodoxy and Catholicism at Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary as part of the course on External Church Relations taught by DECR staff beginning from this academic year. His Eminence pointed to the priorities in relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church at the time of Vatican II. ‘As you know, East and West made up one Church for the first ten centuries of Christianity in spite of the fact that there were certain differences in theology and liturgical practice. The Church in East and West was united. The developments which took place in the mid-11 th century led to a sad division between Christian East and Christian West. Those were events of ecclesio-political nature, but there were also a number of other factors including disagreements on various points in the doctrine and church practice. In the subsequent almost ten centuries of our separate existence, these differences grew considerably and today they are quite substantial in various areas of theology and church life’, he said. During the second millennium up to the mid-20 th century, the key point in relations between Orthodoxy and Catholicism was the notion of heresy, the DECR chairman said and explained, ‘The Orthodox looked at the Catholics as heretics, and the Catholics looked at the Orthodox as heretics. Therefore, any talk on cooperation and the rule of co-existence in a particular territory was out of question’. A stable improvement in the relations between the two Churches has become visible in the recent years with the election of Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. According to the DECR chairman, there is a need today for dialogue between the Russian and the Roman Catholic Churches for defending Christian values in the secular world. Both the Orthodox and the Catholics seek to defend traditional views on the family, bearing and raising children and to protect the integrity of marriage. They believe abortion to be a sin and euthanasia unacceptable. ‘We should develop this cooperation regardless of successes and failures of the theological dialogue’, Metropolitan Hilarion believes. 70,000 Christians killed for their faith in 2013 Vatican City, January 1, 2014 At least 70,000 Christians were killed in 2013 for their faith, reports Sedmitza.ru with the reference to the interview of Massimo Introvigne, an Italian sociologist and coordinator of Observatory on Religious Liberty, with the Vatican Radio . According to the statistics of the previous year, 100,000 Christians were killed in 2012. The situation in 2013 has not become less dramatic. Persecutions of Christians in Africa have not been included in the statistics, as the main motive of persecutions here usually belongs to an ethnic group, rather than a religious community. The contradictory information from the African continent needs additional research. Specifically, the following question needs to be answered: are the Christians killed in the Congo and South Sudan victims of persecutions for their faith or not? All this looked like an attempt of seizure of the Lavra,” reads the address of His Eminence.      Your Excellency! Dear Petro Alexeyevich! Showing our sincere respect, we are addressing ourselves to you with the following question. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church is continuously exerting every effort to preserve peace and inter-faith accord between churches and religious organizations in the Ukraine. But, unfortunately, in spite of all these efforts, we have seen attempts to break the inter-faith (fragile as it is) peace in the state lately. First of all, we mean the cases of attacks on churches of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and attempts to set them on fire. Thus, recently there have been arsons of churches in Kiev and other regions of the Ukraine, acts of vandalism have taken place as well as attempts of seizure of churches and other premises that belong to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. We are especially concerned about the fact that on June 22, 2014, a large number of armed people with aggressive behavior gathered near the Kiev Caves Lavra. All this looked like an attempt to seize the Lavra. By the mercy of God and thanks to the actions of the law-enforcement agencies, the situation was settled. However, events could have developed differently, which would have caused human victims and aggravated the split in society. We are outraged by the fact that recently messages have more than once appeared in media, substantially misrepresenting our Church’s stance on the situation in the Ukraine. The news coverage around the Kiev Caves Lavra was no exception. We regard all this as attempts to contrast the Ukrainian Orthodox Church with society artificially. Such actions pose a threat to inter-faith relations and public peace. In view of the above-mentioned facts, we apply to you for your personal intervention in the situation, and ask you to pursue all appropriate means in order to prevent attacks and seizures of churches and monasteries of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Archive Representatives of Moscow Patriarchate take part in the meeting with President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue 1 December 2021 year 10:59 On November 26, 2021, the “Pokrovskie Vorota” Cultural Center in Moscow hosted a thematic meeting on “The Relevance of Interreligious Dialogue.” Cardinal Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and Prefect of the Commission for Religious Relations with Muslims, spoke at the meeting. The Moscow Patriarchate was represented by hieromonk Grigory (Matrusov), chairman of the Patriarchal Experts’ Council for cooperation with the Islamic world; and D.I.Menyailov of the DECR secretariat for interreligious relations. Taking part in the meeting on the part of the Roman Catholic Church were Archbishop Paolo Pezzi, Ordinary of the Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow; Mons. Lucio Sembrano of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue; and Mons. Peter Tarnavsky, Apostolic Nunciature adviser.  At the beginning of the meeting Cardinal Guixot recalled how the idea of interreligious dialogue emerged in the Roman Catholic Church and pointed out the major landmarks of the development of dialogue since the 1960s. Pope Paul VI instituted a Council for Interreligious Dialogue and issued the Nostra Aetate Declaration. Pope John Paul II set up a Committee for Relations with Islamic World within the Council for Interreligious Dialogue and organized a meeting in Assisi. Pope Benedict XVI used to devote due attention to interreligious dialogue and speak about the necessity for establishing contacts with other faiths with respect to their identity, but in full awareness of our own identity.  Cardinal Guixot told the participants about his vision of interreligious dialogue: it should not be about disagreements and contradictions, but be based on the “rich diversities” and on striving to do good which all traditional religions proclaim. “Such dialogue is far from proselytizing, but is based on openness and mutual respect. Religious variety could be likened to different notes or various voices which together create music.” At the end of Cardinal Guixot’s presentation the participants had an opportunity to ask him a few questions.    The meeting at the “Pokrovskie Vorota” Cultural Centre was held in the framework of Cardinal Guixot’s visit to Moscow during which he had talks with Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations. S. Devyatov has stressed that the Moscow Kremlin is under the protection of UNESCO, so any reconstructions on its territory require negotiations. “The following question is currently being resolved: whether “the Building 14” is to remain within the Kremlin or the monastery and convent are to be restored,” noted the Federal Protective Service’s representative. According to TASS, in his new monograph S. Devyatov relates the history of these monastic communities in detail and for the first time publishes their photographs and layout plans. Devyatov, referring to the researches’ results, noted that “a half of the areas of the monasteries are currently in the same condition as they were at the time of explosions.” This refers to the underground churches and other monastic buildings. He has admitted that the surviving archives contain relatively little materials on the monastery and convent. “But the archive search is progressing very actively,” he accentuated.

Archive Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk: Preparation of Pan-Orthodox Council should take into account real needs and interests of Churches 14 February 2022 year 12:41 “In the foreseeable future, the conducting of a Pan-Orthodox Council is not planned, since serious differences have arisen in the family of Orthodox Churches also over the issues concerning by whom and how Councils can be convened”, Metropolitan Hilarion, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate said answering a question from a TV viewer at the Church and the World program. His Eminence reminded the audience that Councils, known in the history of the Church as Ecumenical, were convened by Byzantine emperors who also chaired them. In total, there were seven Ecumenical Councils in the period from the 4th to the 8th centuries. After a rupture took place in the 11th century between the Eastern Church and the Western Church, Councils continued to be convened in the West, with the Pope of Rome chairing them. It was not the case in the East. An attempt to convene a Pan-Orthodox Council was made as late as the mid-20th century, and its preparation lasted for over fifty years. Eventually, in 2016, a Council of ten Churches took place in 2016 in Crete, which cannot be called Pan-Orthodox because four Local Orthodox Churches did not take part in it out of the fourteen universally recognized Local Orthodox Churches. In addition, the decisions of the Council of Crete were not accepted by all the Churches. However, the need to hold a Pan-Orthodox Council does exist, the DECR Chairman believes. “But before holding this Council, it should be thoroughly prepared”, His Eminence stressed, “The fifty odd years allotted to prepare it proved to be not enough because literally in the last weeks before the Council, which was planned as Pan-Orthodox, a few Churches refused to attend it, and every one of them had her own reasons for it. Accordingly, to prepare a new Council it is necessary to prepare it more thoroughly”. At the same time, His Eminence does not think the preparation should be extremely long, as it is most important that “it should take into account the real interests and real needs of Local Orthodox Churches” - something that was not done in preparing the 2016 Council of Crete. Dr Pantelis Kalaitzidis, Director of the Volos Academy for Theological Studies, spoke on “Ecclesiology and Globalization: In Search of an Ecclesiological Model Relevant to the Time of Globalization (After the Previous Contextual Models: Local, Imperial, National).” The starting point of his presentation was Fr Alexander Schmemann’s distinction between three types of ecclesiological paradigms and relationships between the churches—in other words, three levels of canonical tradition in the history of the Church: the local, the imperial, and the national. Fr. Schmemann correlates these types to specific historical periods with their respective cultural and political forms, as well their models of the relationship between Church and state. Thus, the local ecclesiological paradigm is connected to the pre-Constantinian period, with the early Christian communities scattered throughout the ecumene, the imperial ecclesiological paradigm with the Roman/Byzantine Empire, and the national ecclesiological paradigm with the emergence of nationalism in the Enlightenment era and the creation of nation states. After a brief theological reflection on the relationship between the local Church and the universal Church, and the relationship between the One and the Many, the speaker turned his attention to the question of which ecclesiological paradigm the Orthodox Church will employ in the age of globalization, when national borders are quickly being transcended and geographical boundaries are evaporating. At the end of the session, as with all the sessions, there was sufficient time for a very interesting and lively discussion among the participants.
