Archive On the Day of the Nativity of Christ, Patriarch Kirill celebrated Great Compline at the Church of Christ the Saviour 7 January 2018 year 21:28 In the evening of January 7, the Day of the Nativity of Our Lord God and Saviour Jesus Christ, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia celebrated Great Compline at the Cathedral Church of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. His Holiness was assisted by a great assembly of bishops and clergy. Among them were representatives of Local Orthodox Churches to the Patriarchal See of Moscow from the Orthodox Churches of Alexandria, Antioch, Serbia, Jerusalem, Bulgaria and the Czech Lends and Slovakia. Among the numerous worshippers were mothers superior of Patriarchal convents, Moscow clergy, members of parish councils of Moscow churches, and staff members of synodal departments. The service was broadcast live by the TV Center and Soyuz TV channels. Patriarch Kirill read the beginning of the Gospel from the old altar-Gospel of the time of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, which is brought out of the Church of Christ the Savour’s altar twice a year: during the Christmas and Easter Great Compline. After the service, Metropolitan Juvenaly of Krutitsy and Kolomna extended greetings to His Holiness on behalf of the plenitude of the Russian Orthodox Church. He spoke about new Christian martyrs who spilt blood in the last century of the Russian Orthodox Church, ‘And we can see that the Christian blood and prayers of new martyrs have proved to be capable of restoring the Russian Orthodox Church to her former magnificence’. He also praised Patriarch Kirill for his missionary efforts, saying, ‘We see the fruit of your missionary work in the Russian land, because since you became the Primate of the Russian land you have tirelessly repeated that our love, education and mission work should be addressed in the first place to the youth. May the Lord bless your Primatial ministry with many good years for the sake of the prosperity of the Russian Orthodox Church and our beloved Motherland’. Maria Antipova, student of Moscow State University, and Mikhail Kotelnikov, chief conductor of the Youth Synodal Choir, brought greetings to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill on behalf of the Orthodox youth in Moscow. Then His Holiness addressed himself to the congregation with a primatial homily. This was followed by traditional greetings extended to the patriarch by bishops, clergy and laity. Exactly five months after Fr. Johns death, on March 31, 1918 — by which time the number of murdered clergymen known to the Holy Synod had already reached fifteen — the first Memorial Liturgy for the New Hieromartyrs and Martyrs in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church in the twentieth century was served in the church of the Moscow Theological Seminary, by the Most Holy Patriarch Tikhon, four other hierarchs, and ten archimandrites and protopresbyters. At the Memorial Liturgy and Panikhida, when the supplicatory prayer was pronounced for the repose of the servants of God who have perished for the Faith and the Orthodox Church, following mention of the first slain hierarch, Metropolitan Vladimir, the first-slain Archpriest, Father John Kochurov, was remembered, who by his passion-bearing death ushered in the service offered by the confessors, the assembly of the Russian New-Martyrs of the twentieth century. 44 The Orthodox Church in America 13 ноября 2015 г. Archive ROCOR Synod of Bishops holds regular session 19 February 2020 year 11:41 On February 18, 2020, a regular session of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia took place under the chairmanship of the ROCOR First Hierarch, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York. Taking part in the meeting were Metropolitan Mark of Berlin and Germany, Archbishop Kyrill of San Francisco and Western America, Archbishop Gabriel of Montreal and Canada, Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, and Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan. Archbishop Peter of Chicago and Mid-America was unable to participate due to diocesan matters. The Synod members heard a brief report from Metropolitan Mark of Berlin and Germany on the activities of the ROCOR Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem, and considered an appeal from the Union of Descendants of the Russians of Gallipoli, seeking special prayers for the White Army soldiers on the centenary of their exodus from Russia. The Synod of Bishops blessed the prayerful commemoration on Saturday, November 21, this year. In view of the need to appoint a new ROCOR’s representative to the Church and Public Council for Commemoration of Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church under the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, the Synod designated Archpriest Nikolai Artemoff, secretary of the German diocese, as new representative. Having discussed the issues raised in a report of Archpriest Andre Papkov, president of the Synodal Liturgical Music Committee, the Synod decided to rename the school of church singing headed by him into the Metropolitan Laurus Synodal School of Church Singing. Noting the success of the recent conference held at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God in London, England, the Synod blessed the establishment of a special committee under the auspices of the Liturgical Music Committee with the view of coordinating events in Western Europe. The committee will work under the guidance of Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe. Acting on a request from Archbishop Peter of Chicago and Mid-America, the Synod of Bishops granted to the St John the Theologian Skete, formerly a metochion of the Holy Cross Monastery in West Virginia, the status of an independent monastery. The Synod of Bishops also deliberated on a number of disciplinary matters within the Church, and considered appeals from the ruling bishops for ecclesiastical awards to their clergymen and laity. The meeting concluded with the singing of “It is Truly Meet,” website of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia reports. Tweet Нравится Life of St. Innocent of Irkutsk, head of Chinese mission, to be published in Chinese Moscow, February 6, 2017 Photo: http://pravoslavie.fm/      On February 14, 1721, Hieromonk Innocent (Kulchitsky) was consecrated as Bishop of Pereslavl in preparation for his assignment as head of the Russian Church’s mission to Beijing and representative of the Russian government. He journeyed to Selingin on the Chinese border but was refused entry into China due to his ecclesiastical status. He spent three years in limbo and deprivation in Selingin until he was named as first bishop of the new Diocese of Irkutsk and Nerchinsk in 1727. Now the St. Innocent of Irkutsk Brotherhood and the Hong Kong parish of Sts. Peter and Paul hope to acquaint Chinese Orthodox Christians with the life and labors of this holy hierarch, reports. Pravoslavie.fm . “The Life of St. Innocent for China” aims to expand the base of Orthodox literature in the Chinese language and to facilitate the revival of the Chinese Autonomous Orthodox Church to which the Russian Orthodox Church is currently dedicating much effort. The brotherhood and parish believe the life of this missionary who was originally sent to preach in China, but then moved to the largest Siberian diocese could strike a chord in the hearts of Chinese Orthodox Christians. A fundraising site has been established to finance the translation and distribution of St. Innocent’s life. The Hong Kong parish earlier published a prayer book and a Book of Hours in Chinese, which proved to be very popular. 6 февраля 2017 г. Archive New Russian Orthodox church consecrated in Spanish Torrevieja 27 March 2018 year 14:28 March 25, 2018 – Bishop Nestor of Korsun, administrator of the Korsun diocese, celebrated the Grand Consecration of a new parish Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God in Torrevieja, Alicante Province, Spain. During the consecration, the relics of the Holy Unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian were placed at the holy altar. After a procession with the cross, Bishop Nestor, after anointing the holy relics with myrrh, placed them together with the consecration deed into a reliquary and seal it with reliquary wax. This placement of a part of holy relics at the basis of the altar means that the Universal Church in the period of persecution was established on the bones of martyrs. In the newly consecrated church, the archpastor celebrated the Divine Liturgy. He was assisted by Archpriest Yaroslav Dybach, rector of the Parish of St. George in Valencia, Archpriest Sergiy Prosandeyed, Hiero-schema-monk Nicholas (Serbian Church), Deacon Roman Onika, and other guests of the parish in holy orders. There were some 400 worshipers including parishioners, pilgrims and guests of the community from various parishes in Spain. After the liturgy, Bishop Nestor delivered an archpastoral homily, congratulated the community with the opening of a new church and presented laudatory diplomas to churchwardens and parishioners who proved to be the most active participants in the purchasing and adorning of the new church building. The building to be later arranged according to the canons of the interior decoration of the Orthodox church, was bought in autumn 2017. At the same time, the community bought an adjacent plot of land next to the picturesque Park of Europe 400 meters from the Mediterranean coastline. According to a report from the diocese of Korsun, the purchase of a new church facility became possible thanks to the active actions of the clergy and parishioners who managed in a short time to raise the sum necessary to continue financing the project. Beside two member of Sretensky Monastery, the competition’s jury consisted of well-known Moscow architects and art experts. Below we publish all the designs that were submitted: readers can correlate for themselves the creative and technical challenges set by the terms of the competition with the creative solutions proposed to us. Выставка проектов. Фото: И.Правдолюбов/Православие.Ru Following review and discussion, the jury selected three designs, including the winning design submitted by the studio of Dmitri Smirnov. The jury’s decision was quickly confirmed by our monastery’s Superior, His Holiness, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. What distinguished this work compared to all the others? The competition’s primary objective was to create an image of a Memorial-Church, a church showing the triumph of the victory of Christ and His disciples, the New Martyrs – and it was here, in the jury’s opinion, that the author of the winning design succeeded better than the others. The image of the church it presented is unusually luminous and majestic. That the author placed the church on a stylobate (continuous base) visually emphasizes the idea of a memorial. ИП Смирнов Дмитрий Михайлович. Победитель конкурса We were truly pleased that the author of the design was able to find an eschatological image of the Church’s victory, an image of the Heavenly City – the New Jerusalem – at the center of which is the Lamb, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the triumph of His victory. And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from Whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them (Revelation 20:11). The artists embodied this idea by placing on the external wall of the church an iconographic representation of the enthroned Savior surrounded by New Martyrs. Incidentally, for some reason it was just this that elicited the harshest criticism, right up to accusations of modernism. However, we can see just such a design on the façade of the main cathedral of the Pskov-Caves Monastery. In this case, this artistic parallel was significant to us, inasmuch as the Sretensky Monastery in Moscow and the Pskov-Caves Monastery have a special spiritual relationship.

About 35,000 New Martyrs included in database of St. Tikhon " s Orthodox University/Православие.Ru About 35,000 New Martyrs included in database of St. Tikhon " s Orthodox University Moscow, July 8, 2014      The martyrs for the faith in the 20th century included in the database of Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox University of Humanities (Moscow) number currently about 35,000 people, reported rector of the university Archpriest Vladimir Vorobiev on Tuesday to RIA-Novosti . “Information not only on canonized New Martyrs is being gathered for the database, but also on all those who suffered for Christ and for the faith. There are around 35,000 such individuals at the moment. These are not just their names but also all information that could be found: biographical information, details from investigations, photographs, their works of authorship, letters,” said Fr. Vladimir. According to him, this database is a part of a larger work that is being carried out at the university. “We have a department of contemporary history of the Russian Orthodox Church. The history of the 20th century is the principal area of work,” the archpriest added. The first wave of repressions against clergy (1918-1920) alone swept away about 9,000 lives. Over 10,000 clergymen were found guilty during the confiscation of church treasures campaign, launched in 1921. 2,000 of them were executed by shooting. During industrialization the authorities led a campaign of recasting bells. From 1930 to 1934 the number of churches decreased by nearly one third. Naturally, the clergy could not be silent seeing this. In summer 1937, the order was issued to shoot within several months all confessors of faith, kept in communist camps and prisons. Throughout 1937 and 1938, 200,000 believers were repressed, half of them being executed. 11 июля 2014 г. Предыдущий Следующий Смотри также Living in the Spirit. Archive Clergy of the Northern Deaneries of the Eastern American Diocese of ROCOR call for the protection of the persecuted Ukrainian Orthodox Church 24 March 2023 year 19:33 On Wednesday, 22 March, 2023, the Great Lenten Pastoral Retreat of the northern deaneries of the Eastern American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia concluded with the celebration of the Liturgy of Pre-Sanctified Gifts at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY. The services were led by His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of ROCOR, along with His Grace Bishop Luke of Syracuse, the brethren and a multitude of diocesan clerics. Singing at the services was a unified choir of monastics and students of Holy Trinity Seminary under the direction of Deacon Nicholas Kotar and Priest Efrem Willmarth. The gathering issued a resolution calling for the protection of the persecuted Ukrainian Orthodox Church.  The resolution  states: " Having gathered in Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, New York, for the Lenten retreat and conference of clergy of the northern deaneries of the Eastern American Diocese, we, clergy and monastics, having bowed down in worship before the Cross, communed of the Holy Mysteries, and honored the memory of the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste, raised up our prayers for the flock entrusted to us. We prayed especially for our persecuted brothers and sisters of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, led by His Beatitude Onuphry, Metropolitan of Kiev & All Ukraine. As citizens of the United States – founded 250 years ago on the principles of religious rights and freedoms – we ask all of the Orthodox Christians living in this country, as well as its politicians, representatives of various governmental institutions and social organizations, to raise their voices in defense of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, her archpastors, clergy, monastics, and the millions of parishioners who have been subjected to years of persecution by their own government. Having learned of the closure of the Near and Far Caves of the Kiev Caves Lavra – the cradle of Orthodoxy in Rus’ and the looming eviction of all of its monks and inhabitants, including the students of the Kiev Theological Schools we express our vigorous protest against the actions of the Ukrainian government toward the canonical Church, which nourishes the overwhelming majority of that country’s citizens " . What material will be used in the exterior and interior finishing of the church, what iconographic technique, and which specific subjects will be depicted on the bas-reliefs, dedicated to the New Martyrs, on the facades of the stairs – this we do not yet know. All this remains the object of serious work and discussion. With regard to another extremely important component of the project, the necessity of creating an architectural concept for the new church that integrates the existing monastery structures, here I call upon professionals to speak on this subject. Academician V. D. Shmykov (architect and restorer; head of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise architectural design studio, the “Special Project Restoration” Institute; member of the Academy of Architectural Heritage): “The architectural-artistic image created by the artists contains the idea of the spiritual triumph of the New Martyrs in the name of Christ and of the Orthodox Church; it meets the lofty spirituality of the Russian Orthodox people; and it supports the monastery’s lofty status. At the same time, it fits well into the existing urban setting and the surrounding historical buildings.” Professor Timur Bashkaev of the Moscow Architectural Institute: “Overall this is an impressive work, precisely reflecting the requirements and self-awareness of the contemporary Church, but requiring careful examination of the urban and space planning solutions of the complex while maintaining the vivid authorial style of the façade designs.” I appeal to our parishioners with a request for their prayers, that the Lord might bless this endeavor and allow us to complete the construction and adornment of the church on time: by February 2017. Below we present photographs of all the designs submitted in the competition. The relics of holy Hieromartyr Athanasius have been translated several times. The Monastery of St. Simeon suffered a fire in 1815; the relics were found to be intact and reinterred beneath the altar when the church was rebuilt, eventually moved into the sarcophagus so the parishioners could pray over the relics. In 1893, the relics were transferred to the church named in the hieromartyr’s honor in Grodno; and some of the relics were subsequently moved to an Orthodox convent in the bordering province of Lublin; when the nuns were relocated first to Siberia and then to Paris, the relics of St. Athanasius went with them, before being restored to Lublin in 1996. The courage, the steadfastness in the faith, and the love for the persecuted by which the holy monk lived his life are virtues for which all Orthodox Christians should strive; and St. Athanasius of Brest-Litovsk remains a beloved source of inspiration for Russian and Polish Orthodox Christians alike.
