| Serbs in Montenegro look to erect monument to Tsar Nicholas II Moscow, May 4, 2017 Photo: TASS The Serb National Council (SNC) which unites Serbs from throughout Montenegro has filed a petition to erect a monument to the last Russian emperor in the old royal capital city of Cetinje. The monument would serve as a symbol of gratitude for the Russian Tsars’ many centuries of assistance to Slavic people, reports TASS . “We are turning to you with an initiative to erect a monument to Tsar Nicholas Romanov II of Russia,” the petition reads. A letter was also sent to Mayor Aleksandr Bodanovic and Cetinje city hall president Jovan Martinovic listing the historic landmarks in Monenegrin-Russian relations, beginning from 1711 when Russian emissaries arrived in Montenegro on behalf of Tsar Peter I. Russia’s permanent material and political support beginning in the 18th century eventually led to the rise of an independent Montenegrin state. Thanks to Russian aid, Cetinje Monastery became a spiritual and legislative center, the first general school and printing house were opened in the monastery in 1834, and the first Montenegrin calendar was printed in 1835, the petition reads. Furthermore, Russia played the decisive role in the international recognition of Montenegro’s status during the reign of Prince Daniel from 1852 to 1860. “Putting up a monument to Tsar Nicholas II in Cetinje would mark Montenegro’s permanent attitude to Russia as the centuries-old benefactor. Athos, and thirteen other defendants were acquitted last week in a case concerning a land exchange between the Greek government and the monastery. The case dragged on for many years and saw Elder Ephraim spending three months in jail from December 2011 to March 2012. A few days after the announcement of his acquittal, Tsargrad TV aired his commentary on the matter. In the monastic’s view, the entire case was a spiritual attack: “After taking the Holy Cincture to Russia 1 , because the people received such great benefit, as soon as we returned, the devil immediately showed his strength: we were summoned to an interrogation for preliminary questioning—we were put in jail like criminals.” “We endured this all with the help of God, reconciled ourselves to it and went to jail. We thank all our brothers who prayed with us, and who endured all of this with us. We are grateful to all who helped us bear this heavy cross which the Lord allowed because of our sins,” Archimandrite Ephraim continued, showing the humility that comes from years of ascetic labors. Archimandrite Joachim, spiritual father of the St. Mary of Egypt monastic brotherhood, including its Savior " s Desert Skete (Treadwell Abbey) and lower Manhattan " s Mercy House, a mission to the poor and needy which he founded in 1993, was also forbidden to wear the priestly pectoral cross and ordered to return the holy antimens and Chrism used in services at the abbey and at Mercy House. While the official reason for his suspension was not given, various questions about the details of Fr. Joachim " s life and practices at the monastery and mission center have been raised over the past few years. Fr. Joachim is perhaps better known in Russia, following a series of talks at various parishes and Church institutions in 2011 and the publication of several of his works in Russian. I have watched him on YouTube for years. He helped spirituality many people (l have seen it with my own eyes). I am russian, living in USA. I feel sorry for hierarchy of my country who made this wrong decision about Fr. Ioakim. But we all remember,when St. John Maksimovich was condemned, he said that was not people " s work, but devil " s. That what we " re seeing now again. После референдума вышел на поверхность и затаённый национализм, очень часто направленный против выходцев из Восточной Европы, переехавших сюда после расширения ЕС. Как историк предположу, что теперь Британия (возможно, даже и в усеченном виде) почувствует себя куда более " ненужными и беспомощными " на мировой сцене. Никиких предпосылок к тому, что Brexit вернет коренных британцев к христианству пока не наблюдается.
