Michael Prokurat, Alexander Golitzin, Michael D. Peterson Скачать epub pdf SACRAMENTS SACRAMENTS. The Latin word, sacramentum, finds its equivalent in the Orthodox use of the term, “mystery” (Greek, mysterion). The “mysteries” in the Orthodox Church are usually numbered seven as in the Roman Catholic Church (q.v.) as a result of the latter’s influence in the 13th c.: Baptism (q.v.), Chrismation (anointing of the newly baptized), Communion or Eucharist (q.v.), Ordination (q.v.) (of bishop, priest, and deacon), Matrimony, Confession (q.v.), and Unction (the solemn anointing of the sick). While seven has been the usual count since the 15th c., reinforced by the conciliar decision at Bethlehem (1692) presided over by Patriarch Dositheus, earlier numbering was considerably more fluid. The 4th c. Church Fathers (q.v.) usually speak of Baptism, Chrismation, and Eucharist. In the 5th c. or early 6th c., Dionysius the Areopagite (q.v.) added ordination, monastic tonsure, and Christian burial to the latter three. In addition, his chapter devoted to the Chrism concentrates on the consecration of the oil itself, the Holy Myron, used both to administer the post-baptismal anointing and to consecrate the altar. The latter, consecration of a church, together with the great blessing of water on Theophany (6 January), are included among the sacraments in some early medieval lists. Orthodox monks follow Dionysius with enthusiasm, still insisting on monastic tonsure as a sacrament. Thus, the list of seven that generally prevails cannot be said to be as fixed in Orthodoxy as in Roman Catholicism. Orthodox theologians sometimes quip that the sacraments may be numbered variously as one, two, three, seven, nine-or 232. Finally, the notion of sacrament (mysterion) as that which pertains to the one mystery of Christ, and as communicating that mystery, extends into the worshiping Church’s every action: the painting of icons (q.v.), blessings of different objects, etc. Far more important, then, than any enumeration is the idea of sacrament as that which manifests Christ and enables the participant to partake of him. From this the Eucharist, a collective action in cooperation with the Holy Spirit (q.v.) fully manifesting the Church, is the only sacrament to which Orthodox refer without qualification as “the mysteries.” In this sense it is the Church itself that is finally the sacrament par excellence. Panteleimon of Congo-Brazzaville and Gabon celebrated the consecration of the newly-built Church of St. John the Baptist-St. Nicholas in Impfondo, a town in the north eastern Republic of the Congo with a population of around 20,000. The church is the first in northern Congo, reports Romfea . The parish was founded by His Grace on November 21, 2013 to serve the general liturgical and spiritual life of Orthodox faithful in Impfondo, including the Bantu tribe and Pygmy race, and as a springboard for the further development of Orthodoxy in the region. The consecration was immediately followed by the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, during which Deacon Timothy Ndzebe was ordained to the priesthood. Bp. Panteleimon addressed the new rector with paternal advice and exhortations, highlighting the importance and tremendous responsibility of serving at the sacred altar, and of serving all the people in a spirit of humility, love, and understanding. He also conveyed the affection of His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria, by whose blessing the consecration and ordination were celebrated. Bp. Panteleimon also expressed gratitude on behalf of the local parish to the Thessaloniki Missionary Association of St. Kosmas of Aitolos which funded the erection of the parish. Serbian patriarch visits Albania, nationalists protest Tirana, June 2, 2014 Patriarch Irinej (Tanjug, file) Leaders of Orthodox Christian churches - including a delegation of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) headed by Patriarch Irinej - were in Albania on Sunday. They consecrated the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in the country " s capital, Tirana. The consecration service - a major event for all Orthodox churches - was led by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, Albania " s Balkanweb reports. Also taking part in the service were the patriarchs of Jerusalem and Serbia, the archbishops of Cyprus, Athens, Warsaw and Tirana, as well as representatives of the patriarchs of Moscow, Bulgaria, Georgia and Antiochia. According to a statement of the Albanian Orthodox Church, the consecration of the cathedral is not only a special blessing for Albania " s Orthodox Christians, but also a reaffirmation of Orthodox Christianity worldwide. The complex of the new Resurrection of Christ Cathedral, situated in downtown Tirana, includes the Chapel of the Nativity of Jesus Christ, a bell tower and the Cathedral center, and symbolizes the rebirth of the autocephalous Albanian Orthodox Church. A youth festival concert outside the cathedral, scheduled for Sunday evening, will be attended by Albanian President Bujar Nishani, Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta, Prime Minister Edi Rama and opposition leader Lulzim Basha, who is also mayor of Tirana. Basha is scheduled to receive the leaders of the Orthodox churches on June 2. Nationalists protest Members of Albania " s nationalist Red and Black Alliance on Sunday gathered in protest against the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) delegation that attended the ceremony on Sunday. The delegation, headed by Patriarch Irinej, also included Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral, who is also the archbishop of Cetinje. The police arrested several protesters, detaining six of them, Albania " s Balkanweb reported quoting Alliance activists. Alliance activists opposed the participation of the SPC dignitaries as they said the church " ignores Albanian history and considers Kosovo to be part of Serbia, " and also believes that " Serbia is better off without European Union membership than without Kosovo. " They particularly blame Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama for inviting SPC representatives to attend the consecration of the cathedral, which they see as " an unprecedented move. " The nationalist Red and Black Alliance advocates " a uniform Albanian state where everyone is equally Albanian by ethnicity and there are no divisions into a majority and minority, " Tanjug reported. The Alliance has maintained close ties with Kosovo " s radical Self-Determination movement, led by Albin Kurti, Albanian media have reported. 5 июня 2014 г. First Russian church in honor of St. Paisios to be built in Crimea Moscow, May 18, 2017 Photo: cdn.shopify.com Construction on the first Russian church in honor of the great Athonite elder St. Paisios will begin this summer in Crimea, project curator Sergei Kirsanov told Interfax-Religion on Thursday. “With the blessing of Metropolitan Lazar of Simferopol and Crimea, the community of the future church in the village of Muromskoe in the Belogorsk region of Crimea has already been created,” Kirsanov reported. The ceremony of consecrating the future church’s foundation stone will be celebrated on July 25, on St. Paisios’ birthday. Representatives of Russian and foreign clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church, Crimean authorities, Duma deputies, diplomats, and Russian, Greek and EU public figures are expected to participate in the event. The site of the future church was not chosen randomly, Kirsanov said. The picturesque spot by the lake in Muromskoe was historically inhabited by Greeks. The new church of St. Paisios is also to become a podvoriye of a Greek monastery, and the church complex will include a baptismal church, a bell tower, and a pilgrimage center with a hotel. While the Crimean temple will be the first built in honor of St. Paisios in Russia, an altar was consecrated to St. Paisios in March in the Church of the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Vladimir in the northwestern Moscow district of Mitino. With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, the dean of the Spassky deanery, Hieromonk Daniel (Bushuev), celebrated the consecration of the St. Paisios side altar in the Church of St. Vladimir within the Church complex of the Elevation of the Lifegiving Cross, which is under construction. A Presanctified Liturgy was served following the consecration. The foundation stone of the first Belarusian church in honor of St. Paisios was blessed on October 2, 2016 in Slutsk in central Belarus, by Archpriest Nikolai Labynko, the secretary of the Slutsk Diocese. His Beatitude Patriarch John X of Antioch consecrated a parish dedicated to St. Paisios in Jaramana, Syria on February 3, 2017. Numerous churches throughout Greece and Cyprus have already been dedicated to the great twentieth-century ascetic. St. Paisios was canonized on January 13, 2015 by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and added to the calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church on May 5, 2015. 18 мая 2017 г. Patriarch Irinej said that the celebration of 17 centuries since the adoption of the Edict of Milan is an opportunity for Orthodox nations to come closer to each other, and also to extend their “brotherly hand to other close churches and religions.” Patriarch Kirill said that the Milan Edict celebrations in Serbia are also an opportunity to analyze all issues of importance to the Russian and Serbian Orthodox Churches. Patriarch Kirill said that the Edict of Milan defines the relationship between the church and state, which is the Christian foundation for the development of European civilization, and pointed to the need to constantly remind everyone about it when they try to deny the importance of the Edict of Milan. The Russian Orthodox Church is the largest Orthodox church in the world and an Old Calendarist just like the Serbian Orthodox Church. Tanjug.rs 5 октября 2013 г. ... And the bodily senses themselves, in accordance with the more divine inward essences befitting them, may be said to provide the faculties of the soul with information, since they gently activate these faculties through their own apprehension of the inward essences (logoi) of created things; and through this apprehension the divine Logos is recognized as if in a written text, by those clear-sighted enough to perceive truth. This understanding is clearly opposed to the view of the evolutionary paradigm that the only true knowledge of reality is sense data supported by mathematics. Interestingly, the valuation of the senses in the evolutionary paradigm is actually lower than the role of the senses in the sacred cosmology of Maximos, as is clear from the text just quoted. The relevance of the cosmological vision of St. Maximos the Confessor for our time is significant precisely because it is refractory to the all-pervasive doctrine of evolution. It offers a hope of overcoming the hypnosis of rationalism and relativism in which the world at present languishes. The cosmology of St. Maximos reveals a world grounded in the Sacred, in which everything that happens is spirit motivating matter through form, a world in which everything created lives and moves and has its being in the uncreated being of the Logos. Finally, it is a vision of the world in which the universe is transfigured as a sacrament of love. In the sacred cosmology of St. Maximos the Confessor, the world is truly a cosmic liturgy in which the inner essences of all things may be heard to sing the words of the faithful at the consecration of the Eucharist in the Orthodox divine liturgy: “Only One is holy, only One is Lord, Christ in the glory of God the Father.” Vincent Rossi 26 августа 2015 г. Cyprus’ first Russian-style Church to be consecrated March 27 Moscow, March 9, 2017 Photo: RIA-Novosti      The consecration and grand opening of Cyprus’ first Russian-style Orthodox church, named in honor of St. Andrew the First-Called, will take place on March 27, RIA-Novosti reports. “This is the first church on the island built in the Russian style for the spiritual nourishment of the Russian-language faithful of the Metropolis of Tamasos of the Cypriot Orthodox Church, which is why it’s unique. In short, this is a truly great event which will contribute to the strengthening of the friendship between our Churches and people,” reflected Archpriest Igor Yakimchuk, the head of the Secretariat for Inter-Orthodox Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Affairs (DECR). There are already several Russian parishes in Cyprus, but they “operate in parishes of the Cypriot Church, built in the Greek style,” the priest stated. According to him, it is expected that Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, the chairman of the DECR, will attend the opening of the new temple. Metropolitan Isaiah of the Tamasos diocese studied at the Moscow Spiritual Academy and is a long-time friend of the Russian Orthodox Church. The head of the Republic of Cyprus, the choirs of the St. Petersburg Spiritual Academy and of Sretensky Monastery, and the honored builder of the Russian Federation, the president of the social-cultural foundation “Creative World” Vyacheslav Zarenkova are also expected to attend. As previously reported , the new church boasts five gold domes from St. Petersburg. The central dome, weighing nearly eight tons, was placed on the church on July 7, 2016. The church will hold 400 people and is to be surrounded by a large hillside garden, pavilions, a reception area, a park for disabled children with special games for those with mobility problems. 9 марта 2017 г.
