Archive Metropolitan Tikhon of All America and Canada presides at the Divine Liturgy at St. Nicholas Russian Cathedral in New York City on the day of its patronal feast 20 December 2021 year 18:22 On Sunday, December 19, 2021, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, and at the invitation of His Grace Matthew Bishop of Sourozh and Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA & Canada, His Beatitude  Metropolitan Tikhon  presided at the Divine Liturgy at New York City’s Saint Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral on the day of the Cathedral’s patronal feast. Concelebrating with His Beatitude were Archpriest George Konyev, Chancellor of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, Archpriest Alexander Golubov, Igumen Nikodim, Dean of the Cathedral and Secretary of the Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes of the USA, and Priest Alessandro Margheritino, Secretary of the Orthodox Church in America. Metropolitan Tikhon’s delegation included Deacon Peter Ilchuk, Executive Secretary to the Metropolitan. After the Divine Liturgy, Igumen Nikodim shared the greetings of Bishop Matthew who welcomed His Beatitude, and noted his regrets for not being able to participate in the celebration. Metropolitan Tikhon offered his greetings to both His Holiness Patriarch Kirill and Bishop Matthew, thanking them for the opportunity to celebrate the Divine Liturgy on such beautiful and joyous day in which we honor the beloved Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia. His Beatitude also thanked Father George and the Cathedral’s clergy for their hospitality and love. In his homily at the end of the Divine Liturgy , His Beatitude pointed out that, “In today’s Gospel, we read that the crowds gathered around the Lord Jesus Christ and ‘sought to touch him, for power went out from him and healed them all.’ Perhaps, hearing this, we wish that we, too, could have seen Jesus with our eyes, touched him with our hands, and have received healing for the wounds of our bodies, our souls, our hearts. But of course, the Lord is always present to us, not just spiritually, in our inner being, but physically, through the saints.” Metropolitan Tikhon then remarked that, “Wherever there is sanctity, there is Jesus Christ. And in some cases, in accordance with God’s providence, the holiness of a person is so great that, even after his death, his body remains with us, visibly full of God’s healing grace, always making Christ’s power present in our lives. This is the case with Saint Nicholas.” At the conclusion of the liturgical celebration, His Beatitude and his delegation were welcomed to the parish hall to share a festal meal with the Cathedral’s community in honor of their patron saint. During the meal, Metropolitan Tikhon and Bishop Matthew were able to speak on the phone and exchange greetings of the feast. New Romanian saints to be officially proclaimed in May Moscow, April 24, 2017 Photo: Basilica.ro      The Romanian Orthodox Church has announced that the official proclamation of four new saints will take place on May 14 at Putna Monastery in Suceava County. The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church announced last year on June 6 that Metropolitan Jacob Putneanul of Moldova, and the Venerable Fathers Silas, Nathan, and Paisios of Sihstria Putnei Monastery were to be added to the calendar of the Romanian Church’s saints. Their canonization was earlier proposed by the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rduiits and approved by a session of the Synod of Moldova and Bukovina on May 20 at Neam Monastery. Metropolitan Jacob (1719-1778) was the most distinguished bishop and pastor of the Moldovan Church of the eighteenth century. In 1731 he entered into the monastic ranks at Putna Monastery, being elected abbot in 1744. He served as Bishop of Radauti from 1745 to 1750, and of Moldova from 1750 to 1760, during which time he labored tirelessly to increase the spiritual level of his flock, printing spiritual literature for all ages and establishing spiritual schools. In 1760 he retired again into monastic simplicity for the remaining eighteen years of his life The holy fathers of Sihstria lived in the eighteenth century and labored at Sihstria Putnei during a time of great spiritual flowering. Burning with love for God and silent prayerful contemplation, St. Silas served as abbot from 1753 to 1781 and oversaw the founding of the Church of the Annunciation; St. Nathan served from 1781 to 1784 during a time when many monasteries of the region were being abolished; and St. Paisios, a spiritual child of St. Nathan, labored as a fervent defender of Orthodoxy and clairvoyant guide for countless souls, falling asleep on December 16, 1784. Their fragrant relics were discovered in 1990 during restoration work at Sihstriei Putna, two hundred years after the monastery had been abolished. Until today they prayerfully protect the inhabitants and pilgrims of their monastery through the grace of their relics, and have long been considered saints of God. 24 апреля 2017 г. Venerable Simeon Of Pângrai Venerable Saints Simeon and Amphilochius Of Pângrai      Venerable Simeon was born at the beginning of the fifteenth century in a village close to Piatra Neam city, at the time of the pious ruler Prince Alexander the Kind (1400-1432). From his youth he was a very religious man, choosing to live the monastic life and joining the community of Bistria Monastery. After much ascetic practice and obedience, in 1432 he retired together with two of his disciples on the left bank of Pângrai creek. There he built a cell of fir beams in a beautiful meadow where he stayed together with his disciples in permanent prayer, so that his place became known as “Simeon’s Hermitage.” Having heard of him, Right-believing Prince Stephan the Great (1457–1504) helped him raise a small wooden church dedicated to Great Martyr St. Demetrius the Myrrh-Gusher. When Metropolitan Teoctist I consecrated it, Venerable Simeon was ordained priest, becoming the founder and igumen of Pângrai Monastery, called “Simeon’s Skete” until 1508. There he gathered many disciples around him, growing in self-denial and prayer and receiving the gifts of healing and of prophecy. The faithful benefited from his blessings, as well as high officials, and even Right-believing Prince Stephan the Great, who used to ask for his advice for him and for the country. In 1476, when the Turks invaded Moldavia and won the battle of Rzboieni, Venerable Simeon prayed for the country and for the ruling prince to rid them of the invaders, and took his disciples to settle at Cava Monastery, in Mure region. There he passed away the same year in the autumn, being buried in that monastery. Towards the end of 1484, when peace was reigning again in the country, Right-believing Prince Stephan the Great placed his relics in a shrine and kept them in his treasury, in great honor. Then he took parts of the relics and placed them in a shrine for veneration, burying the rest of them in the Citadel of Suceava. On March 6, 2008 the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church canonized Venerable Simeon and Amphilochius , to be celebrated on September 7/20. Through the prayers of the venerable Saints Simeon and Amphilochius, Lord Jesus Christ our God have mercy on us. Amen. Troparion, tone 3: Oh, Venerable Fathers Simeon and Amphilochius, you who did enlighten the Carpathian woods through your prayers and filled the whole valley of Bistria with a spiritual aroma, close advisers of the ruling princes and radiant torches of the monastics and pious faithful, pray to God for us, who celebrate with love your holy commemoration. 20 сентября 2016 г. Eugene Zakrjevsky 25 марта 2017, 08:00 This of course is absolutely wonderful that such a task is being undertaken. Glory be to God. And judging by the pictures posted,it is wonderful that the youth are being involved. The two girls pictured at the head of the article are undoubtedly following in the steps of their Orthodox grandmothers/great- grandmothers who undoubtedly would have been married women and hence would have worn head coverings in church. And the two girls are to be commended for their efforts to embrace Orthodoxy. They show an understanding for the need to practice piety. However what they are unaware of is that in the Russian Orthodox Church before the revolution it was only married women who wore head coverings, girls and unmarried women didn " t. 42 Martyrs of Ammoria in Phrygia Commemorated on March 6 Photo: Days.Pravoslavie.Ru The Holy 42 Martyrs of Ammoria: Constantine, Aetius (Aetitus), Theophilus, Theodore, Melissenus, Callistus, Basoes and the others with them. During a war between the Byzantine Emperor Theophilus (829-842) and the Saracens, the Saracens managed to besiege the city of Ammoria (in Galicia in Asia Minor). As a result of treason on the part of the military commander Baditses, Ammoria fell, and forty-two of its generals were taken captive and sent off to Syria. During the seven years of their imprisonment they tried in vain to persuade the captives to renounce Christianity and accept Islam. The captives stubbornly resisted all their seductive offers and bravely held out against terrible threats. After many torments that failed to break the spirit of the Christian soldiers, they condemned them to death, hoping to shake the determination of the saints before executing them. The martyrs remained steadfast, saying that the Old Testament Prophets bore witness to Christ, while Mohammed called himself a prophet without any other witnesses to support his claim. They said to the soldier Theodore, “We know that you forsook the priestly office, became a soldier and shed blood in battle. You can have no hope in Christ, Whom you abandoned voluntarily, so accept Mohammed.” But the martyr replied, “You do not speak truthfully when you say that I abandoned Christ. Moreover, I left the priesthood because of my own unworthiness. Therefore, I must shed my blood for the sake of Christ, so that He might forgive the sins that I have committed against Him.” The executioners took each one separately and led him off to be beheaded, then threw the bodies into the River Euphrates. In the service to them, these holy passion-bearers are glorified as: the “All-Blessed” Theodore, the “Unconquered” Callistus, the “Valliant” Constantine, the “Wondrous” Theophilus and “the Most Strong” Basoes. The betrayer Baditses did not escape his shameful fate. The enemy knew that it is impossible to trust a traitor, and so they killed him. Troparion — Tone 4 Your forty-two holy martyrs, O Lord,/through their sufferings have received incorruptible crowns from You, our God./For having Your strength, they laid low their adversaries,/and shattered the powerless boldness of demons./Through their intercessions, save our souls! Kontakion — Tone 4 Forty-two holy martyrs of Ammoria,/you contended for the sake of Christ on earth;/you were revealed as crown-bearing martyrs,/and have been received into the life of the joy of heaven./Since you overthrew all the wiles of the enemy/by your sufferings and the blood of your wounds,/you continually send down from on high remission of sins to those who praise you. It is believed Bede’s remains were removed from Jarrow in the 11th Century and taken to Durham, where they were placed in a linen bag in the coffin of St Cuthbert. One of the Raine casts was given to John Thurnam, an asylum doctor and antiquarian who built up a collection of skulls, some from excavations. At the time it was thought that skulls could provide information on brain function, racial characteristic and the nature of past people. The Thurman collection ended up in the Duckworth Laboratory in the Leverhulme Centre for Human Evolutionary Studies at the University of Cambridge, where Prof Story made her discovery. The new Jarrow exhibition explores the medieval devotion to Bede, and the discovery, preservation, and fierce debate about the authenticity of the skull in the mid-19th century. Prof Story said: “The story of the skull of Bede is one that takes us to the heart of 19th-Century ideas about race and the peopling of the British Isles in antiquity. “It traces the thread of evidence that links the cast in the Cambridge cupboard back to the excavation of Bede’s tomb in Durham Cathedral in 1831, and from there back to the destruction of the medieval shrines of saints in Reformation England, the devotion to the memory of Bede throughout the Middle Ages, to the creation of Durham Cathedral in early 12th century Norman England.” Matt Storey, of Bede’s World, said: “Not only is it exciting that we have been able to acquire a cast of the skull of Bede for permanent display at the museum, but the story behind the cast opens up a number of fascinating questions about what happened to Bede’s bones after his death along with the celebration of his cult in medieval Europe. “The project has been a very successful collaboration between Bede’s World, the University of Leicester and the University of Cambridge and I hope that there will be further opportunities for us to work together in the future. 8 сентября 2015 г. At such a time it is necessary to be with the people of Hajnówka and express our solidarity,” said Robert Tyszkiewicz, member of Polish Parliament. The Belarusian Orthodox simply wanted to peacefully pray on Forgiveness Sunday, while what occurred is being considered basically a violation of the constitution right to worship. The route the organizers chose is not random, Tyszkiewicz explains. Last year one of the marchers was photographed with a smile on his face on the ashes of the homes of one of “Brown’s” victims. “This is not accidental. This is a vile, disgusting act, full of hatred, aimed at intimidating and dividing the people,” he concluded. 1 марта 2017 г. Feminism and Tradition deals head-on with the questions and challenges which feminism presents to the traditional Orthodox Faith, in a way which is irenic, straightforward, and comprehensive. 25 мая 2012 14 мая 2012 How did the sense of the individual arise in European culture? And why did this sense develop more strongly in the Latin West than in the Greek East, in spite of the fact that some of the earliest reflections on the nature of the person belong to the Orthodox Christian world? In this searching investigation, Stelios Ramfos explores the roots of the modern debate on the person and concludes that the preoccupation of the Byzantine Greeks with eternity inhibited them from developing a fruitful sense of interiority. He argues that, nevertheless, a figure such as Leontius of Byzantium can suggest a way forward if Byzantine theological thinking is revisited in the light of insights derived from the Western philosophical tradition. События 11 мая 2012 Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia examines the teachings of St Gregory of Sinai (1255-1346) on the Jesus Prayer. Describing both the form of the Prayer and the inward and outward techniques of prayer of the heart, Metropolitan Kallistos also touches upon the question of possible parallels or influences from other religions on the Jesus Prayer in Eastern Christianity. We are left with a clear impression of the extraordinary saint who, with St Gregory Palamas, initiated the renaissance of hesychasm. Father Oleg Mumrikov (Doctor of Theology, lecturer at St Tikhon’s Orthodox Humanities University, teacher at the Moscow Theological Academy), asks a rather important question for the field of theology in a report presented during the session " On the Origin of the World and of Man " at the Moscow Theological Academy 20th International Educational Christmas Readings on 24 January 2012: how should one understand the array of facts, supporting evolutionary anthropogenesis, which have been gathered in anthropology? We often regard the author of the Gospel of Mark as an obscure figure about whom we know little. Many would be surprised to learn how much fuller a picture of Mark exists within widespread African tradition, tradition that holds that Mark himself was from North Africa, that he founded the church in Alexandria, that he was an eyewitness to the Last Supper and Pentecost, that he was related not only to Barnabas but to Peter as well and accompanied him on many of his travels. In this provocative reassessment of early church tradition, Thomas C. Oden begins with the palette of New Testament evidence and adds to it the range of colors from traditional African sources, including synaxaries (compilations of short biographies of saints to be read on feast days), archaeological sites, non-Western historical documents and ancient churches. The result is a fresh and illuminating portrait of Mark, one that is deeply rooted in African memory and seldom viewed appreciatively in the West.
