All the three were involved in contesting contemporary heresies. All the three combined serving the Church in episcopal rank with literary activity, and it is precisely their literary legacy which secured for them the paramount place that they occupy in Christian Tradition. All the three were victims of ecclesiastical intrigues. Their posthumous glory, however, exceeded any expectations their contemporaries might have had, and their significance for the entire Christian Church in East and West cannot be overestimated. | Your Eminence Archbishop Mark of Berlin, Germany and Great Britain: I send my heartfelt greetings to you on your 75 th birthday. Having converted to Orthodoxy in your younger years, you devoted the rest of your life to bear witness to the eternal Gospel truths and the undying glory of the Name of Christ. You were faced with many difficulties in your effort to “grow and multiply the Word of God” (Acts 12:24 ), as a result of which the Church received new devoted members seeking salvation. Your spiritual maturity was bolstered by your relationship with renowned elders of Mount Athos, studying the legacy of the Holy Fathers, Slavic languages and literature. Sensing the calling forty years ago, you made your monastic vows and were able to receive the Grace of the Holy Spirit, which joined you to the servants at the altar of the Lord. Since then, you painstakingly perform every obedience that the Church lays upon your shoulders. Of these is the thirty-five years of archpastorl service you have borne. Ruling the dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in Germany, Great Britain and Ireland, you have through the coordination of your efforts strived to bear witness to your contemporaries of the transformative power of “faith which worketh by love” (Galatians 5:6). It gives me joy to note the special attention you always paid to educational efforts and preaching, including that aimed at younger generations. This mission is especially important today, when spiritual and moral values and ancient Christian traditions are being squeezed out of social life. In recognition of your zealous service and your 75 th birthday, I deem it just to grant to you a memorial panaghia. | A handwritten letter of St. Seraphim to Archimandrite Anthony In 2006, a photographic copy of a manuscript was published containing spiritual counsels written by the hand of St. Seraphim of Sarov († 1833) to the then young Hieromonk Anthony (1792-1877), who regularly visited and sought advice from the Saint. In 1831, St. Philaret, Metropolitan of Moscow, chose Father Anthony as his spiritual Father and appointed him Rector of the Holy Trinity Lavra near Moscow (the Metropolitan was then Abbot of the Monastery). Father Anthony, as Archimandrite, worthily served the renowned Lavra, and Russian monasticism more generally, for more than forty years, until his saintly repose. It seems that the original text was found among the personal archives of Father Anthony at the Lavra. We do not have further information regarding either the original or the photographic copy; nevertheless, the Grace-filled spiritual admonitions of the text are wholly consistent with the well-known “Brief Teachings” of St. Seraphim. A copy of the original handwritten letter and an English translation of the text follow. Father Seraphim: words written by his own hand. 1. Learn noetic prayer of the heart as the Holy Fathers teach it in the Philokalia; for the Jesus Prayer is a light on our path and a star leading us to Heaven. 2. Learn to practice the Jesus Prayer while breathing in through your nose, with your lips shut; this technique is a scourge against the flesh and carnal desires. 3. Add “through the Theotokos have mercy on me” to the usual Jesus Prayer. 4. Outer prayer alone does not suffice, for God is attentive to the mind. Thus, monks who do not unite outer prayer with inner prayer are not monks, but little black heads. 5. Fear like the fire of Gehenna those painted ravens [women]; for they often transform soldiers of the King into servants of Satan. 6. Keep in mind that the true mantiya of a monk is patient endurance of slander and disparagement with joy; where there are no sorrows, neither is there salvation. 7. I experience much better reading comprehension with ESV than KJV. No sooner have I heard KJV read in church I have already forgotten it. With KJV there " s a messy jumble of antique words which make no sense to a dyslexic mind. With ESV I recall the scriptures more clearly. |

| Patriarch Kirill greets 5th International Russian-Georgian Poetry Festival Moscow June 6, 2011 The 5 th International Russian-Georgian Poetry Festival is held from June 6-15, 2011, in the Georgian cities of Batumi, Poti, Kutaisi and Tbilisi. About 100 authors from over 30 countries attend. His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia has sent following message of greetings to the organizers, participants and guests of the festival: Dear Brothers and Sisters, I cordially greet the poets, people of letters and all the guests of the 5 th International Russian-Georgian Poetry Festival. Holy Fathers of the Church would present the most sublime theology in the form of verses and the greatest of poets would praise the Creator in their works, admiring His creation. The human soul has always sought to embody things good, beautiful and eternal in the word, and poetry as the art that gives the fullest expression to the potential of language offers a master a multitude of resources for expressing the subtlest tinges of emotions. Sharing their permanent love of the human word and devout desire to serve the Word of God, the great Russian and Georgian cultures have given the world literature a whole pleiad of remarkable poets and artists of the thought. Now you as posterity of Pushkin and Rustaveli, Lermontov and Baratashvili, are to continue these glorious traditions in a worthy way. United by the faith of Christ, our peoples are tied by the bonds of spiritual brotherhood which cannot be broken by any hardships, troubles or trials, for there is no more solid foundation for friendship than common prayer and love of the truly beautiful.
