The Church Triumphant is above all the worshipping Church, her existence is a living participation in Christ " s office of intercession and his redeeming love. Incorporation into Christ, which is the essence of the Church and of the whole Christian existence, is first of all an incorporation into his sacrificial love for mankind. And here there is a special place for her who is united with the Redeemer in the unique intimacy of motherly affection and devotion. The Mother of God is truly the common mother of all living, of the whole Christian race, born or reborn in the Spirit and truth. An affectionate identification with the child, which is the spiritual essence of motherhood, is here consummated in its ultimate perfection. The Church does not dogmatize much about these mysteries of her own existence. For the mystery of Mary is precisely the mystery of the Church. Mater Ecclesia and Virgo Alater, both are birthgivers of the New Life. And both are orantes. The Church invites the faithful and helps them to grow spiritually into these mysteries of faith which are as well the mysteries of their own existence and spiritual destiny. In the Church they learn to contemplate and to adore the living Christ together with the whole assembly and Church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven (Heb. 12:23). And in this glorious assembly they discern the eminent person of the Virgin Mother of the Lord and Redeemer, full of grace and love, of charity and compassion – «More honorable than the cherubim, more glorious than the seraphim, who without spot didst bear the Eternal Word.» In the light of this contemplation and in the spirit of faith the theologian must fulfill his office of interpreting to believers and to those who seek the truth the overwhelming mystery of the Incarnation. This mystery is still symbolized, as it was in the age of the Fathers, by a single and glorious name: Mary Theotokos, the Mother of God Incarnate. Christian 19 января 2016, 22:00 I am happy for Easter to ebb and flow in harmony with Creation. Rdr Andeas Moran 19 января 2016, 22:00 I agree with Michael and Martin: the Orthodox Church must see these western innovations for what they are - part of the attempts by heretics to undermine Orthodoxy. The Holy Fathers determined how the date for Pascha should be fixed and we should stay with that. The western confessions are now so far removed from Orthodoxy that there is no reason to consider them. RICO 18 января 2016, 17:00 Martin, your hostile attitude goes nowhere in promoting good will. And ignored the reason for the different Pascha dates. All churches use the calculation of the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. So why the difference? Because the Orthodox determination of the vernal equinox is no longer accurate. The Western churches use the correct astronomical date for the vernal equinox. The Church Fathers used the best astronomical science available to them. And they would use the best available science today. Michael Warren 18 января 2016, 06:00 The Orthodox date or no go. Martin Kalyniuk 17 января 2016, 23:00 Such arrogance never fails to furnish fresh material for astonishment. They, Western schismatic/heretical Christians, invent a problem by playing with the calendar. Are perplexed that problem has arisen. Suggest solving the problem by playing around with the calendar some more. Will expect Orthodox Christians to acquiesce. You " d like to celebrate Holy Pascha on the same day? Then fall in line with the Second Ecumenical Council, calendar and all. His the Very Reverend first-among-equals, naturally will do what he likes. And I " m sure it will touch-off another devastating rupture in the already thoroughly riven with division Greek Church. Good luck with us. Russian Church has a history of not complying with Western projects to " fix " Christianity, even when the Greeks go along with it. I do feel for those poor businesses in the West though and all those people whose " social arrangements " are adversely affected.

Thy soul rejoices with the holy Apostles, O Father Grigol, crown of the martyrs. Through thy prayers make us worthy of everlasting joy! According to another account, the martyr entered the gas chamber in place of a Jewish man with a large family. This was reported by a former prisoner, who, after being liberated, visited Metropolitan Dionysius and gave him St. Grigol’s cross.   Archpriest Zakaria Machitadze For further information on the book THE LIVES OF THE GEORGIAN SAINTS by Archpriest Zakaria Machitadze contact St. Herman Press : St. Herman Press, P.O. The early church described another type of baptism when the catechumens were persecuted and suffered martyrdom in the name of Christ before their formal initiation. Those martyrs were said to have been admitted to Paradise by the baptism of blood. In the early Christian centuries most Christian catechumens were baptized in their adulthood. In the 4th century the fathers (such as St. Gregory the Theologian preaching Orations on the Lights in Constantinople in 380) had to encourage people not to leave their baptism until their deathbeds. Nevertheless, the baptism of infants was justified by all the early fathers. In 253 the Council of Carthage made it a recommended practice of the church. Baptism is never repeated. If a convert wishes to enter the Orthodox Church from another Christian communion it is the majority practice of the Greek and Russian traditions to chrismate a believer who has already been baptized by threefold washing in the name of the Trinity. If there is doubt over the form of liturgy that had been used, or if the convert is coming from no church background, the full service of baptism is always performed. Tweet Нравится Saint Arsen, Bishop of Ninotsminda (†1082) Memory 31 July (13 August) Arsen of Ninotsminda was an ascetic who labored in the 11th century. History tells us that he was a brilliant translator, writer, calligrapher, and theologian, and indeed one of the greatest Church figures of his time. St. Arsen was tonsured a monk in Jerusalem, and after some time he returned to Georgia, where he was consecrated bishop of Ninotsminda. But the venerable Arsen longed to lead a life of solitude, so he approached King Davit Kuropalates for permission to resign from the bishopric and settle at a monastery. The king honored Arsen’s request, and the pious man set off for the monastery with Ioane Grdzeslidze, a man of letters and another great figure in the Church. When the news of his decision reached the Iveron Monastery on Mt. Athos, Sts. Ioane and Ekvtime invited the fathers to Mt. Athos, and the next year Arsen and Ioane arrived at the Holy Mountain. There they assisted St. Ekvtime in his translations of the Holy Scriptures and many theological books. St. Arsen labored fruitfully at the Iveron Monastery for many years and reposed peacefully at an advanced age. He was buried on Mt. Athos at the monastery’s church of St. Simeon the Stylite. St. Giorgi of the Holy Mountain later translated his relics to the ossuary of the monastery’s catholicon. Outstanding in virtue and a fulfiller of Christ’s commandments, O Holy Father Arsen, pray to God for us! Most Christians, including Protestants, claim to believe the Nicene Creed, and the Nicene Creed is unambiguous on this point, and its statement that Christ " Kingdom shall have no end " is taken straight from Scripture. Some early fathers, who did not have the benefit of the instruction of the Second Ecumenical Council, have some excuse for being mistaken on this point; but now we have no such excuse. The problem with premillennialism is that it tended to feed into other heresies, such as Montanism, which believed that Montanus was the Holy Spirit incarnate, and which believed that the Kingdom of God was soon to come to be established in Phrygia. We have seen similar heresies with millenialist eschatology in more recent times, with the Jehovah " s Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists , Mormonism , the Jim Jones Cult, and Branch Davidians. Given the excesses this view has tended to produce, the Church felt it necessary to clearly define the matter. Fr. John Whiteford " s News, Comments, & Reflections Fr. St. John Chimchimeli the Philosopher Commemorated on February 10 Little information about the life of Saint John of Chimchimeli has been preserved, but we know that he was a great translator, philosopher, and defender of the Georgian Christian Faith. John received his education in present-day Bulgaria, at the literary school of the famous Petritsoni (now Bachkovo) Georgian Monastery. One historian writes: “In his eulogy on the death of Saint Demetre the King, John the Philosopher of Chimchimeli brilliantly describes the glory, honor, and heroism of this holy man’s life.” Saint John translated many exegetical compositions, including two commentaries on the Book of Ecclesiastes, one by Metrophanes of Smyrna (Metropolitan of Smyrna (857-880). His Commentary on Ecclesiastes is preserved only in Georgian.) and the other by Olympiodorus of Alexandria. (A 6th-century deacon who wrote a series of commentaries on the books of the Bible, not to be confused with the neoplatonist philosopher also of the 6th century.) He also translated An Explanation of the Gospel According to Saint Mark and An Explanation of the Gospel According to Saint Luke , both by Blessed Theophylactus of Bulgaria. The works of our Holy Father John of Chimchimeli are fundamental to the canon of Georgian theological literature. In his work Pilgrimage , the eminent eighteenth-century historian Archbishop Timote (Gabashvili) mentions John of Chimchimeli among the holy fathers portrayed in the frescoes at the Holy Cross Monastery in Jerusalem. In the second half of the 19th century the historian Mose Janashvili wrote, in his History of the Georgian Church , that John of Chimchimeli directed a literary school in the village of Gremi in Kakheti. According to Janashvili, students at Saint John’s school were instructed in philosophy and theology as well as in the Greek, Syrian, and Arabic languages.      In the context of today’s society, marked by secularization, uncertainty and a lack of mobilizing ideals, His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania, underlines the importance of the mission of the Church, which has to harmonize the word of preaching and catechesis with charity work, by practical helping, and an active and consolatory presence among the people. The Romanian Patriarch also highlighted the necessity of co-responsibility and co-operation of clergy and lay people in the dynamic mission of the Church. These can be supported today by modern means of communication – television, radio, social networks, written and online press – instruments by which the ministry of the Church can reach those who are not acquainted with or have forgotten the joy of communion in God’s love. Although today’s secularized society is more critical with the servants of the Church, asking that the Church help the society as much as possible, even if the secularized society, in its turn, does not help the Church, but often shows hostility to her, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel urges Orthodox clergy and believers to be faithful to Christ and His Church. His Beatitude notes that some of those who are troubled and disoriented today will change for the better, especially when they find spiritual peace and joy bestowed by Christ in the servants and the faithful of the Church. Facing the contemporary challenges related to the phenomena of secularization, migration and all types of violence which generate different feelings and attitudes for and against the Church, as servants of our Saviour Jesus Christ among men, we must mainly resort to spiritual patterns represented by the Holy Fathers of the Church and by the Romanian Spiritual Fathers, who went through many trials and tribulations, but, by prayer and patience, wisdom and hope, conveyed to us a dynamic missionary work and a peaceful, lively and luminous Romanian spirituality.
