IOCC Delivers Relief To Hurricane Joaquin Survivors In The Bahamas Source: International Orthodox Christian Charities Baltimore, November 4, 2015      International Orthodox Christian Charities ( IOCC ) is responding with emergency relief to Hurricane Joaquin survivors on one of the hardest hit islands in the Bahamas. Working in cooperation with Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, in Nassau, Bahamas, a parish of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, and with local relief partner, HeadKnowles, IOCC is providing building supplies for residents of Long Island who have started to repair their homes. Blankets, hygiene kits, school kits, and cleanup buckets are also in transit to the Bahamas and being delivered to families in need on the affected outer islands. More than 3,000 people live on Long island in the Bahamas, but not a single one escaped the wrath of 130 mph winds or nearly 24 inches of rain. Hundreds of families were stranded without shelter after forceful winds ripped roofs from their homes or reduced them to rubble. Powerful waves surged over the hard hit island, flooding the islands and washing a freighter and numerous smaller boats inland. Four weeks after the storm, electricity is just starting to be restored. IOCC US Country Representative Dan Christopulos was on the ground last week to assess the immediate and long-term needs of the survivors. " Parts of the island were obliterated, with standing water still evident, " said Christopulos. " So many of the houses have been badly damaged or destroyed. While we help those residents who have been able to go back and undertake some of the more minor repairs, we realize that long term recovery will be needed to help Long Island families rebuild their homes and their lives after suffering so much loss from this disaster. " IOCC has also been in contact with relief partners, United Methodist Committee on Relief and Bahamas Methodist Habitat, about collaborating on rebuilds in the future with IOCC Orthodox Action Team volunteers from the US and Bahamas providing volunteer labor.

IOCC Responds to Flooding by Hurricane Joaquin Source: Orthodox Christian Network Baltimore, October 6, 2015 Firefighters rescue a child from floodwaters–a scene that has been repeated hundreds of times since devastating floods swept across South Carolina this weekend. IOCC is in contact with Orthodox Church communities in South Carolina and has called on members of the IOCC Emergency Response Network who live in the affected area to prepare to respond as the needs emerge. Photo: City of North Charleston      While the US East coast was spared the destructive force of Hurricane Joaquin reaching land, overwhelming levels of rainfall in its wake have deluged South Carolina. At least 15 people are dead and tens of thousands more people are without shelter, power, or drinking water. International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) has been in contact with Orthodox Church parishes in the most impacted areas of Columbia, Charleston, Myrtle Beach and Florence, South Carolina, and with ecumenical partners to determine the best response in the aftermath of the record rain and subsequent flooding. Members of the IOCC Emergency Response Network, known as Frontliners, living in the affected area have been called on for possible deployment as the needs emerge. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have lost loved ones to a storm that has claimed lives from the Bahamas up through the Carolinas,” stated IOCC US Country Representative Daniel Christopulos. “We also pray for those who have suffered loss and damage to their homes and businesses and are committed to working with our Orthodox Church and ecumenical partners to do our part in helping those impacted.” In the Bahamas, IOCC has also been in contact with Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Nassau and is formulating the most effective response to the devastation caused there. Although Nassau and Grand Bahamas islands were unaffected, neighboring islands in the chain are reporting extensive damage. HOW YOU CAN HELP Assemble emergency kits. IOCC also anticipates the need for Emergency Clean-Up Buckets which are in low supply. For directions on how to assemble Emergency Clean-Up Buckets, please visit iocc.org/kits .

Orthodox Patriarch Kirill Ends Historic Latin American Tour in Sao Paulo Source: Latin American Herald Tribune Natalya Mihailova 22 February 2016 SAO PAULO – The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, ended on Sunday his 11-day, four-country Latin American tour by celebrating a Mass and visiting a church. Photo: REUTERS/ Alexandre Meneghini The head of the Russian Orthodox Church had held a historic meeting in Havana with Pope Francis early in his trip, but on Sunday he presided at Mass in the Antioquina Metropolitan Orthodox Cathedral in Sao Paulo. At the three-hour ceremony, Kirill said that Brazil can successfully build a just society, but only if it unites the power of knowledge, education and technology with that of prayer and faith to end poverty and raise the public’s quality of life. The patriarch also once again expressed his concern about Christians currently being persecuted in the Middle East and warned that a lasting peace is linked to justice and not to violence. “War and violence will never achieve lasting peace. Lasting peace is always associated with justice,” he said in his sermon on Sunday. Before departing for Moscow from Sao Paulo with his delegation, Kirill had been scheduled to visit the Russian Orthodox Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation, located in the Ipiranga neighborhood. Brazil, which has between 3,000 and 4,000 Orthodox faithful, most of them immigrants who have settled in Sao Paulo state, was the final stop on Kirill’s Latin American tour, which also took him to Paraguay, Chile and Cuba, where on Feb. 12 he held an historic meeting with Pope Francis and also met with former Cuban President Fidel Castro. Tweet Нравится Saint Patriarch Tikhon - His Missionary Legacy to Orthodox America Fr. Alexey Young Saint Tikhon, 11th Patriarch of Moscow and of All Russia Most of what has been written about St. Patriarch Tikhon since his repose on the Feast of Annunciation in 1925, has centered on the short years of his patriarchate. Although this coincided with the most complex and difficult time in all of Russian Church history, all who take up the pen in his regard agree that he was the " right " man, chosen by God, for that critical hour. The Saint's English language biographer Jane Swan, has written: " It is difficult to assess the greatness of Tikhon....His spiritual growth was far beyond that of the ordinary mortal. " This finds agreement with the opinion of the Saint's contemporary, Prof. Pavel Zaichenko: " in speaking about Bishop Tikhon, I am seized with reverent trepidation This was a giant among Russian Orthodox hierarchs; he was truly worthy of the honor and respect of the entire Christian world.' The key to St. Tikhon's greatness lies in his personality, his character. Prof. Zaichenko recalls: " By nature Bishop Tikhon was kind, responsive and unusually sensitive. In his character he was quiet, merciful, good-natured and always tried to preserve in himself serenity, a serenity which he transmitted to the souls of all those around him. " Elsewhere it has been said that " he had a strong sense of duty and responsibility...moreover, he was possessed of an iron like self-possession and circumspection'' These were the qualities on which he built his fruitful activity as a missionary hierarch in North America. It was during these seven years, in the crucible of a pluralistic spiritual wilderness, that he refined and honed his insights into human nature and arch-pastorship. This period of Patriarch Tikhon's life and personal development has received little attention. Yet, his " years in America were not only extremely productive, as far as successful administration of his diocese was concerned, but for Tikhon personally, they were years of useful experience which served him well later on. Later in life, he mentioned the fact that his American sojourn not only widened his ecclesiastical horizon but also his political outlook...[since he] was thrust into a completely new environment including freedom of religion, no censorship, [and] the hurrying business-like American bustle...''

Greek Orthodox Community Member Arrested as Suspect in Shooting of Fr Nikolaos Kakavelakis in Lyon Pravmir.com team 02 November 2020 Fr Nikolaos Kakavelakis. Photo: Facebook French police have arrested a suspect after a gunman shot and seriously injured Greek Orthodox priest Nikolaos Kakavelakis twice, leaving him seriously injured in the stomach at 4pm local time Saturday, reports Neos Kosmos . Newspaper reports point to police reports that say the 52-year-old priest – a father of three –  was closing the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Lyon when he was shocked by a hunting rifle. The Lyon public prosecutor’s office said he had opened an investigation for attempted murder and was liaising with the national anti-terrorism prosecutor, however the shooting was not declared a terrorist attack but a ‘personal dispute’. Le Monde newspaper said there was a hypothesis that this was linked to a long-running conflict within the city’s small Greek Orthodox community with allegations of fraud against Kakavelakis which were rejected by a Lyon court earlier in the year. The priest had a long-running legal dispute with a monk, reported French media reports. A disgruntled community member was later detained as the main suspect, though Lyon local media had earlier reported that a man was arrested after 7pm in a kebab shop in the city though he was later released.   Tweet Donate Share Code for blog Greek Orthodox Community Member Arrested as Suspect in Shooting of Fr Nikolaos Kakavelakis in Lyon Pravmir.com team French police have arrested a suspect after a gunman shot and seriously injured Greek Orthodox priest Nikolaos Kakavelakis twice, leaving him seriously injured in the stomach at 4pm local time Saturday, reports Neos Kosmos. Restoration work in Suprasl, Poland awaits specialists Suprasl, Poland, August 8, 2012 A scientific seminar with regard to the relations between Podlyashsky Region and Orthodox Balkans was held in late July in the Suprasl Annunciation Monastery in Poland. A five hundred-year-old witness of these relations, the 16th century frescoes, were almost entirely lost in 1944 with the destruction of the main temple of the Suprasl monastery. The restoration of the Annunciation Cathedral brings back the necessity of Byzantine tradition frescoes being painted in the church, reports Sobor.by website. The end of July marks sad date for Suprasl Monastery—the anniversary of the destruction of the Annunciation Cathedral by the retreating Nazi invaders. In the summer of 1944, the ancient history of the monastery soared into the air together with the cathedral. The icon Museum in Suprasl is a home to the remaining 1 percent of the original frescoes painted in 1536 by the Serbian monk Nektarios. Frescoes are still the most important evidence of the connection between Orthodox Podlyashshye and the Balkans, namely Serbia and Athos. Even though these region are far away from each other geographically, they are spiritually close. This was discussed at the seminar. At present, new secrets of the Suprasl paintings are being revealed. The Polish Orthodox Church has restored the ruined Annunciation Cathedral; and for many years, the temple remains without plaster, not due to financial problems, but to the long search for artists who would be able to recreate the 16 th century work. Such frescoes need to be painted directly onto the wet plaster. The search for painters working in the Byzantine tradition continues. The original 16th century frescoes are now being restored and will soon return to the Icon Museum. However, even the photocopies of the frescoes greatly impressed the Serbian guests. The Constantine Choir from Nis has recently stayed in Suprasl. The Serbian ambassador has also visited the museum. It is yet unknown from which country the specialists will be chosen to restore the frescoes, but the citizens of Podlyashye hope that the cultural and spiritual ties with the Balkans will continue. 10 августа 2012 г. ...
