For our God-bearing Fathers deemed to the practices of every church to be observed, and the bishop of Cyzicus is subordinate to the Primate of the aforementioned Justinianopolis following the lead of all the other bishops subordinate to the aforementioned most God-pleasing Primate John, by whom, once it is needed, let the bishop of Cyzicus himself be appointed”. In keeping with this consideration let them make ordinations of different orders of clergy according to the rules and take full advantage of presiding according to their precinct, and let every regulating action taken by them be deemed valid and legal. Для всех них владыка находил время и возможность побеседовать, наставить на путь истинный, дать нужный совет в должное время… English Edition [Theology] Alexei Ilyich Osipov The methodical development of imagination is based in the experience of one of the pillars of Catholic mysticism, the founder of the order of Jesuits and great Catholic saint Ignatius of Loyola (sixteenth century). His book Spiritual Exercises enjoys great authority in Catholicism. Ignatius himself said of his book that if one reads it, it could replace the Gospels. He tells the reader to imagine the crucified Christ, to attempt to penetrate the world of Christ’s feelings and sufferings, to mentally converse with the Crucified One, etc. All this contradicts in principle the basics of spiritual ascetic labor as it has been given to us in the lives of the saints of the Universal Church. Thousands to walk Via Dolorosa today in Jerusalem with prayer for Ukraine Moscow, April 14, 2017 Photo: ibtimes.co.uk      Orthodox believers from Ukraine and various corners of the earth will walk the Via Dolorosa, or Way of Sorrow, bearing copies of famous wonderworking icons of the Mother of God from Ukraine, reports the site of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. “Every year, on Holy Friday in Jerusalem they have a cross procession along those streets where the feet of Christ the Savior stepped, Who bore His heavy Cross. The rite of this procession is celebrated every year, headed by His Beatitude the Patriarch of Jerusalem and All Palestine,” said Met. Anthony (Pakanich), Chancellor of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. “The mission ‘The Way of the Lord in Prayer for Ukraine’ is a large-scale procession organized by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. This procession is a doubly-special prayer for our much-suffering Ukraine,” the hierarch continued. The idea for the mission first appeared in Eastern Ukraine, where war has continued unabated for three years already. “This is a special prayer that unites Jerusalem and Ukraine. Parishioners of our Eastern dioceses took the initiative for such a procession. His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry blessed this prayer. Icons from all corners of Ukraine are brought to Jerusalem. At the same time, prayers are offered at these icons in northern, southern, eastern, western, and central Ukraine. We, faithful people, place all of our hope in God, and therefore we believe that the Lord, Who suffered during these days in Jerusalem, and the Mother of God, who was present, will certainly help,” said Met. Anthony. Following the procession along the Way of Sorrow, organizers will present the icons to Patriarch Theophilus III of Jerusalem in his residence on the eve of Holy Saturday, with a request for prayer for Ukraine. 14 апреля 2017 г. Natural love, i.e. fallen love, heats a person " s blood, excites his nerves, and arouses daydreaming; holy love cools the blood, calms both soul and body, draws the inner man towards prayerful silence, and immerses him in rapture through humility and spiritual delight. Many ascetics, having taken natural love for Divine love, excited their blood, and excited their daydreams also. The condition of excitement passed very easily into a condition of frenzy. Many took those who were in a state of excitement and frenzy for persons filled with grace and holiness, while they were actually unfortunate victims of self-delusion. There were many such ascetics in the Western Church from the time it fell into heresy, in which Divine properties are blasphemously ascribed to a man, and veneration which is due and fitting to God alone is given to a man. Many of these ascetics wrote books from their excited condition in which frenzied self-delusion seemed to them to be Divine love, in which their disordered imagination painted for them a multitude of visions which flattered their self-love and pride. Son of the Eastern Church! Shun the reading of such books, avoid following the precepts of those who are self-deluded. Guided by the Gospel and the holy fathers of the true Church, ascend with humility to the spiritual height of Divine love by the means of fulfilling Christ " s commandments in deed. Know firmly that love for God is the highest gift of the Holy Spirit, and a person can only prepare himself, through purity and humility, for the receiving of this great gift, through which mind and heart and body are changed. In vain is the labor, fruitless is it and harmful, when we seek to discover in ourselves high spiritual gifts prematurely: merciful God gives them in His own time, to the constant, patient, humble fulfillers of the Gospel commandments. as Martyr, you have unwavering courage; as the Lord’s brother, you have forthrightness; as Hierarch, intercession. —Dismissal hymn The circumcision of Christ is then celebrated (Jan. 1), not only as a fulfillment of the ceremonial Torah and the transition of God’s revelation to mankind (after the fall) from shadow (Heb. 8:5) to reality, but also for naming the child Jesus (which means “Savior”). We too receive a new name through the Church in the mystery of Baptism—the Christian fulfillment of circumcision—following the example of both Christ and our forefathers. Through this sacramental act, a Christian’s whole life is dedicated to Christ through the intercession of Saints (Heb. 12:1; Rev. 8:4) and the protection of angels (St. Matt. 18:10; Jude 1:9). The holy prophet Malachi On January 3rd, the holy prophet Malachi is commemorated. Malachi prophesied from within the Persian court of Artaxerxes that a “Sun of Righteousness” would enter the world with “healing on his wings” (Mal. 4:2; ca. 5th century B.C.). On the following day, the original seventy apostles are commemorated (cf. Luke 10:1-16), being first sent into the world with the Gospel message. These men and women remind us that, as we have received the infant Christ in his Nativity, it is now our turn to share him (as did Mary) with the rest of the world. We take this message of an infant King of Kings, along with the good news of his life, death, and resurrection, into all creation (Mark 16:15), just as these first apostles and disciples of Christ did. And finally, we conclude the 12 Days of Christmas with the Great Feast of Theophany (sometimes called Epiphany) on January 6th. In the baptism of Christ, by the hands of John the Forerunner, the divinity of Christ and the full mystery of the Trinity are made manifest. Theophany means “divine manifestation,” and we are reminded continually, in the life of the Church and her worship, of this manifestation of Christ as the God-Man, along with the unique and incomprehensible mystery of the Trinity. In fact, the abundance of our rituals regarding the sanctification of this created order—including within our churches—is a reflection of this incarnational mystery:

The entire country, and the Church in particular, languished under the yoke of Mongol oppression. The Georgian people were once again faced with a terrible choice: to preserve their temporal flesh or attain spiritual salvation. Most would not yield to the temptation of the enemy and chose instead to die as martyrs for Christ. At that time a monk named Pimen, a fool-for-Christ, labored in the Davit-Gareji Wilderness. His ancestral roots were in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia. Pimen rebuked kings and condemned the unjust and immoral acts of the nobility. The pious monk Anton Meskhi labored with him. Enlightened by divine grace, the fathers recognized that the Georgian people were following their king’s poor example. Thus, the monks began a struggle for the spiritual salvation of the nation’s people that demanded the censure of the king. In addition to their labors of foolishness and censuring of kings, the saints preached Christianity among the Dagestani. For their great spiritual achievements and struggles on behalf of godly purity, the Christian Faith, and the spread of the Gospel among the Dagestanis, the Georgian Church has counted Pimen the Fool-for-Christ and Anton Meskhi worthy to be numbered among the saints. Filled with theological wisdom and bearing the yoke of foolishness- for-Christ, O Holy Saints Pimen and Anton the Georgian Sun, pray to God for us!

Subjecting any other text to such treatment – even a text by Tolstoy himself –would be considered highly dishonorable and, quite obviously, would not be accepted by the author’s admirers. It should hardly come as a surprise, then, that the Church could not accept such an arbitrary editing of the words of Christ. If we turn to the authentic teaching of Christ, we find these words: I will build My church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Matthew 16:18). We can find the authentic teaching of Christ – and not just His teaching, but Christ Himself – only in the Church He built. Translated from the Russian . Translator’s notes:  The Holy Synod, meeting on February 20-22, 1901, issued an edict excommunicating Tolstoy from the Church. At wedding receptions guests customarily shout “gorko” (lit., “bitter”) following toasts to the newlyweds. More and more people visit Orthodoxy and the World website. However, resources for editorial are scarce. In comparison to some mass media, we do not make paid subscription. It is our deepest belief that preaching Christ for money is wrong. Having said that, Pravmir provides daily articles from an autonomous news service, weekly wall newspaper for churches, lectorium, photos, videos, hosting and servers. Editors and translators work together towards one goal: to make our four websites possible - Pravmir.ru, Neinvalid.ru, Matrony.ru and Pravmir.com. Therefore our request for help is understandable. For example, 5 euros a month is it a lot or little? A cup of coffee? It is not that much for a family budget, but it is a significant amount for Pravmir. If everyone reading Pravmir could donate 5 euros a month, they would contribute greatly to our ability to spread the word of Christ, Orthodoxy, life " s purpose, family and society.

As Orthodox Believers are Deprived of the Eucharist, Patriarch Daniel Indicates Other Ways of Partaking of Christ Source: Basilica.ro As Romanian Orthodox believers are deprived of receiving Holy Communion in churches following the coronavirus outbreak, Patriarch Daniel said there are several ways to receive Christ in our souls spiritually. ‘Now only those who call priests home can receive the Eucharist,’ Patriarch Daniel said during his homily in an empty patriarchal cathedral on Holy Thursday. His Beatitude referred to one of his spiritual directors, Elder Cleopas Ilie from Sihastria Monastery, who based on the experience of the Saints ‘shows us that besides the Holy Eucharist – as the highest way to partake of Christ – there are also other ways to unite with our Saviour.’ Prayer is the first work by which we can spiritually partake of Christ, the Patriarch explained. ‘Christ, who is called in prayer, comes in us mystically through the Holy Spirit and abides in us and transmits His humble and merciful love.’ Another way through which we spiritually receive Christ is by listening to God’s Word in the Holy Scriptures. ‘When we listen to Christ’s words, He secretly comes into our souls and sanctifies not only our ears but also our soul and body.’ Remembering the teaching of Sts Maximos the Confessor and Mark the Ascetic, Patriarch Daniel said that ‘we also partake of Christ by fulfilling His commandments: to love God and our neighbours.’ Therefore, when we are deprived of the Eucharist, we should communicate spiritually with Christ ‘through prayer, by listening to God’s Word, by listening to church services and through many merciful deeds.’ He reminded that the desert fathers rarely received Holy Communion, ‘but they communicated very often through prayer, feats and a great love for God and others.’ His Beatitude stressed the significant importance of the Holy Eucharist instituted by the Saviour Jesus Christ on the Great and Holy Thursday. The Holy Fathers called it ‘the medicine of immortality,’ the Patriarch explained, adding that Holy Communion is administered as ‘a provision for eternal life.’

To achieve it, one must correct oneself and break one " s self-will, moving from pride to meekness; from passion to abstinence; from hot-temperedness to gentleness and hospitality; from self-centeredness and greed to compassion; from suspiciousness and jealousy to being supportive and well-wishing; from light-mindedness to wisdom in God; from cowardice and faint-heartedness to bravery and courage; all things changing for the good. Bishop Alexander (Mileant) 02 September 2005 Selflessness – Who Conceived of It? In ancient Christian literature there is a remarkable story of an 18-year-old man named Anthony, who lived in the third and fourth centuries at a time when paganism was still a dominant force in the world. His parents were pious Egyptian Christians who raised him well, teaching him the importance of the Christian faith, prayer and Divine services. On his way to church, Anthony usually meditated on the lives of the apostles – how they left everything to follow Christ. Upon entering the church one day, Anthony was struck when the deacon read the following words of the Gospel aloud: “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me” (Matthew 19:21), for they seemed to have been spoken directly to him. Anthony soon gave away his inheritance, left home, and went into the desert to serve God in peace and solitude. It is difficult to describe the extent of the hardships he faced as a young struggler in the wild deserts of Egypt. He suffered from hunger and thirst and the extremes of temperature. The worst temptation for him was the grief of longing for his former life. Added to this, many demonic lures and horrors were directed against his soul. At times Anthony became nearly exhausted, and was tempted to return to the world, but with a strong faith in God’s help he conquered these temptations.
