Patriarch Kirill says pilgrimage development from Russia to help Greece to cope with crisis Athens, June 4, 2013 Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia said he urged to develop religious tourism in the Russian-Greek relations. " Pilgrimage is not seasonal tourism, not people going to the seaside, so they can come at any time. If pilgrimage is successfully enhanced, then this will have spiritual meaning, will bring us closer, will strengthen relations between the Churches more and will contribute to the economy of your country, " the patriarch said at a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras in Athens. The patriarch said that it was currently important for Greece to develop the spheres, which would bring income quickly and that the Russian Church attached great importance to the religious tourism and pilgrimage development. Patriarch Kirill said that Russia had also survived a crisis " having gone through utter collapse of the economic and political systems when the Soviet Union fell. " " But of course, in the past ten to twelve years, especially after President Putin came to power, a lot has changed in Russia and now we live in an utterly different country. So we have a very clear understanding of the mood and the feelings the Greek people currently experience having found themselves in economic trouble, " the patriarch said. Patriarch Kirill said that Greeks were a heroic nation, " a nation which preserved itself throughout thousands of years and which is a carrier of the highest antic and Christian culture. " " Such nations do not disappear, they can fight. I would like to assure you that the Russian Church and Russian people are together with you in this fight of the Greek people for their future, " the patriarch said. Samaras said he thanked the Russian Church for the financial support it gave to Greece during the crisis. The Greek prime minister said that he believed in the power of the Greek people, who were spiritually strong and who would overcome the difficulties they were experiencing. Sand animation film in honor of Chernobyl released (+ VIDEO) Moscow, April 27, 2017      A new sand animation has been released on the website of artist Ksenia Simonova in memory of the victims of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. The short story concerns a family and a mother and a daughter, and is meant to remind us of the thousands of people affected by the explosion. Other sand animations from Simonova are dedicated to St. Ksenia of St. Petersburg, St. Luke of Simferopol, and Royal Martyr Nicholas II, among many others. “My hometown of Evpatoria has always been closely linked with the memory of Chernobyl,” the artist writes. “Children suffering from the Chernobyl accident came to our children’s health center for rehabilitation. We opened the Wormwood Star Museum a few years ago. My generation well knows what I’m talking about; it’s not necessary to explain. I would like our children to know and remember, and grow up with the idea that the world must avoid such terrible catastrophes, to save the planet…” The title “Wormwood Star” refers to the opening of the seventh seal in Revelation chapter 8, when many men die by drinking water turned bitter: And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter (vv. 10-11). The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident which occurred on April 26, 1986 in the No.4 light water graphite moderated reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The destruction had an explosive character, the reactor was completely destroyed, and radioactive substances were released into the surrounding environment. The accident is the largest of its kind in the history of nuclear energy. The Garrison Cathedral was built between 1856 and 1879 according to the design by the outstanding Russian architect, one of the founders of so called " Russian " or " Byzantine " style, David Grimm (1823-1898). Grimm designed many other projects in St Petersburg, Tbilisi, Sevastopol, Livadia, Zhitomir and other cities of the Russian Empire, as well as in Copenhagen, Geneva, Nice and Bethlehem. The Brest Garrison Cathedral was one of the largest buildings of this type. Interestingly, it was precisely in this Cathedral that Emperor Alexander III celebrated his namesday in August 1886. Almost all the members of the Imperial Family were present, including the heir—the future Emperor Nicholas II, and the court. The future Kaiser, Wilhelm II, then heir to the German throne, also visited Brest as a distinguished guest. After nearly 30 years, having come to power, World War I was unleashed, but in front of the photographers in Brest Nicholas II was dressed in a Prussian officer " s full-dress uniform, and Wilhelm in a Russian one. After the First World War, when Brest was occupied by Poland, the Orthodox Church was converted into a Catholic Church. In 1939, after the arrival of the Red Army, the Church was used as a Red Army club. On June 22, 1941, during the heroic defence of the fortress against the Germans, the building changed hands several times. The Cathedral was seriously damaged but not destroyed. After the war it long stood unrestored, but was included in the memorial complex called, " The Fortress of the Heroic City of Brest " , which saved it from demolition. In 1994 the Church was returned to the faithful and its gradual restoration began; the golden dome began to shine over the Cathedral again and the peal of bells returned. Interior work continues to this day, even though services are celebrated regularly.      Pravoslavie.ru 4 апреля 2013 г. ... Athos Moscow, March 2, 2017    Photo: Facebook.com      A previously unknown manuscript of beloved twentieth-century Athonite elder Nikodim of Karoulia has been discovered on Mt. Athos, reports director of the International Institute of the Athonite Legacy in Ukraine and editor of the anthology The Athonite Legacy Sergei Shumilo on his Facebook page . Photo: Facebook.com The document, entitled “The Voice of Russian Monks from Athos to the Suffering Russian People Living in the Fatherland and Scattered Throughout the Whole World,” is dated to 1966. Shumilo notes that he consulted with other scholars of the twentieth century Russian emigration, and they were previously unaware of such a document. The next step is to prepare it for publication, according to the Ukrainian scholar. As Shumilo writes, Elder Nikodom of Karoulia was highly respected and a practitioner of the unceasing Jesus Prayer. Athonite monks of various nationalities came to him for advice, in addition to secular activists, writers, and generals, particularly from the Russian emigration. The elder absolutely rejected the Bolshevik Revolution and Soviet Power.    Karoulia is the harshest region of Mt. Athos, on its southwestern tip, where hermits live in small huts on the vertical faces of huge rocks rising from the rough sea. Elder Nikodim reposed in one such cave on February 28, 1984 at 100 years old. Eyewitnesses say that for seventy-seven years he took absolutely no food during Great Lent. Istanbul Rums pondering before Turkey " s general elections/Православие.Ru Istanbul Rums pondering before Turkey " s general elections Halki Theological Seminary Some additional professional commitments during the last few weeks brought me closer to the small Greek Orthodox community of the Rums (Anatolian Greeks) of Istanbul. As this coincided more or less with this year’s Orthodox Easter celebrations, I was able to be with them at the most important date of their religious calendar. This year, that event fell just a few weeks before the crucial general elections in Turkey on June 12. There are several religious and social occasions where one can meet the few thousand Rums who remain today in Istanbul. Their historical churches spread all over the city and the Princes’ Islands were busy preparing their flocks with daily masses for the apex of the Greek Orthodox faith, Easter Sunday, occurring this year on April 24. The physical center of Orthodoxy, the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Fener, was the busiest of all holy locations, not only carrying out the ancient duties of the Holy Passion but also hosting a number of important religious and secular dignitaries who paid visits to its headquarters and attended mass in the Patriarchal Church of St. George. But it was not the religious aspect of this year’s celebrations that caught my attention most, although Orthodox Easter has never ceased to move me deeply since my childhood. It was the interesting conversations I managed to have with Istanbul Rums on the margins of several social events that accompanied this year’s religious festivities. These showed me that a few weeks before Turks decide whether or not they want a Justice and Development Party, or AKP, government for the third time, an ancient minority group like the Rums is as split as the country they belong to. Istanbul Rums have in general benefited from the AKP’s rise to power in 2002. The selection of the European Union as a national target by the present government created strong hopes among the Rums that their rights could be safeguarded within the framework of the EU acquis. These hopes were much enhanced when Turkey was declared officially a candidate member in 2004 and, even further, when formal accession negotiations started with the EU one year later. Hopes multiplied yet further when one of their major demands from the Turkish state was accepted and after 2007 they were able to hold elections for new councils of their self-governed community foundations.

Kievan Rus’ is best known by its literature-which centered on Scripture (q.v.). Ironically, no complete manuscript of the Slavic Bible exists from this period. (See Constantine-Cyril; Gennadievskii Bible; Methodius.) Nonetheless, the popular power of liturgy and the personal piety (qq.v.) of the people of Kievan Rus’ dictated that spiritual writings were of the utmost importance. Religious writings were called sacred and divine insofar as they were not heretical. The idea of distinguishing between the inspired Holy Scriptures, the Church Fathers (q.v.), and the apocrypha (i.e., non-Biblical rather than “deuterocanonical”) did not exist. Indeed, the apocrypha was especially liked because of its fabulous content, which appealed to the imagination and was entertaining. Since the Old Testament enjoyed limited liturgical use, only the prescribed church readings were collected into one liturgical book (q.v.), rendering a complete Old Testament unnecessary. Other available biblical books for church and private use circulated in smaller collected editions. The Book of Psalms was the most popular one, outpacing even the Gospels, and was used not only as the “prayerbook of the Church” but also as the chief reading primer. After the psalter and individual Gospels came the prophets and wisdom literature, especially Sirach. The Palaea, a “Reader’s Digest version” of the “historical books” of the Old Testament dressed up with apocryphal legends, completed the list. While reading was a virtue of the elite, and liturgy appealed to both elite and peasant, Holy Scripture and apocryphal works were rivaled in popularity only by translations of the lives of saints, followed by sermons (see Kirill of Turov) and patristic exegeses. Thus, three of the largest and most popular literary corpuses of Kievan Rus’ had Scripture as their centerpiece. (See Russian Orthodox Church.)
