Bulgarian Orthodox Church Patriarch backs initiative against same-sex marriages in EU      Bulgarian Orthodox Church Patriarch Neofit has sent a letter of support for an initiative that insists on a uniform definition of marriage and family in the European Union, directed against same-sex marriage. A copy of the letter from Neofit, who chairs the Bulgarian Orthodox Church’s governing body the Holy Synod, was posted on the website of Bulgaria’s Society and Values Association. The “Mom, Dad and the Kids” initiative is a “European Citizens’ Initiative” that started from Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Croatia, Sweden, France, Portugal and Germany, against “the increased undue pressure from Brussels in recent years to redefine marriage”. The initiative is a response to a reported statement by European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans in June 2015, that “the Commission should go forward and try to get all member states in the EU to unreservedly accept same-sex marriage as other marriages”. In the letter, Patriarch Neofit says that the Orthodox Church “is the guardian of traditional marriage” and it is good to support the “Mom, Dad and Kids” initiative and the church gives it its blessing and support to protect the right of each EU member state to itself define its policy in the field of marriage and family. According to the initiative’s website, it requires the support of a million EU citizens by December 10, and so far has gathered a third of the required signatures. The initiative, which has been registered with the European Commission, needs to surpass the threshold of million signatures for it to be discussed by the Commission. Those behind the initiative want marriage to be defined in EU regulation as “a union between a man and a woman and family is based on marriage and/or descent. as a union between a man and a woman, and the family”. They say that Article 9 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU gives each EU member state the right alone to determine its policy in the field of marriage and family. Bulgaria’s constitution, approved in 1991, appears to preclude same-sex marriage. Article 46 (1) of the Bulgarian constitution says: “Matrimony shall be a free union between a man and a woman. Only a civil marriage shall be legal”. According to the 2011 census in Bulgaria, about 60 per cent of the population declared themselves to be Eastern Orthodox Christians. American College Of Pediatricians On Same-Sex Marriage Ruling: ‘A Tragic Day For America " s Children’/Православие.Ru American College Of Pediatricians On Same-Sex Marriage Ruling: ‘A Tragic Day For America " s Children’      In a statement released Friday, the president of the American College of Pediatricians said the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage will have a significantly negative impact on children in the United States.    Dr. Michelle Cretella, president of the College, said: [T]his is a tragic day for America’s children. The SCOTUS has just undermined the single greatest pro-child institution in the history of mankind: the natural family. Just as it did in the joint Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton decisions, the SCOTUS has elevated and enshrined the wants of adults over the needs of children. The College, which has members in 44 states and in several countries outside the U.S., joined in an amici brief in Obergefell v. Hodges , the case that has led to the legalization of same-sex marriage in all 50 states of the nation. In the brief, the amici stated what is often the case when sound research is ignored by the left when it fails to support their causes: Despite being certified by almost all major social science scholarly associations—indeed, in part because of this—the alleged scientific consensus that having two parents of the same sex is innocuous for child well-being is almost wholly without basis. All but a handful of the studies cited in support draw on small, non-random samples which cannot be extrapolated to the same-sex population at large. This limitation is repeatedly acknowledged in scientific meetings and journals, but ignored when asserted as settled findings in public or judicial advocacy. The College itself has maintained that a significant body of research has demonstrated that “same-sex marriage deliberately deprives the child of a mother or a father, and is therefore harmful.” 2 июля 2015 г. According to His Holiness, “the remains are encrypted” and none of the experts doing the tests know in which vessel the remains are located. “I have a list which was made in the presence of other people, so we are aware which vessels contain which specific remains,” His Holiness Patriarch Kirill added, noting that the measures taken will enable us “to trust this examination.” “I thank you for your attention to this matter,” His Holiness said, addressing the guest. “Thank you for your love for our common motherland, for maintaining the wonderful traditions of the Romanov Family, and for participating in bringing the remains of both Maria Feodorovna and Nicholas Nikolaevich.” The ashes of Empress Maria Feodorovna, spouse of Emperor Alexander III, were brought from Denmark to Russia and reburied in September 2006. The litia before the burial of the empress’ remains at the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul (“Petropavlovsky”) in St. Petersburg was celebrated by the ever-memorable Patriarch Alexis II. The ceremony of reburying of the ashes of Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich the Younger, grandson of Emperor Nicholas I, the Supreme Commander of all land and naval forces of the Russian Empire at the beginning of the First World War, took place on April 30, 2015, at the Common Military Cemetery of Moscow with the participation of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill. “Through your labors history is being united. In this the uniqueness of your personality and that of the House of Romanov is revealed. Those living are uniting that part of our national history which was torn apart by the tragic events early in the twentieth century in their family tradition,” His Holiness said in conclusion. Bishop Tihon of Yegoryevsk, Chairman of the Patriarchal Council for Culture and Abbot of Moscow Sretensky Stavropegic Monastery, along with the wife of Prince Dimitri Romanovich Princess Dorrit Romanov took part in the meeting. O Holy Martyrs and Right-believing Kings Archil and Luarsab, entreat Christ God to deliver us from every iniquity! Apparently this is Khuzaim bin Khazim, the caliph’s viceroy of Armenia. Historians are divided as to the date of St. Archil’s martyrdom. Michael Prokurat, Alexander Golitzin, Michael D. Peterson Скачать epub pdf GEORGIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH GEORGIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH. Ancient Iberia, Georgia is a trans-Caucasian nation bordering Russia and Armenia, and boasts of being one of the first kingdoms to convert to Christianity. The “Apostle to the Georgians” was an anonymous woman, later given the name Nina, who converted the king, Mirian, around 330. Early placed under the jurisdiction of Antioch, the Georgian Church achieved self-governing status around 506, in connection with its (temporary) repudiation of Chalcedon in alliance with the Church of Armenia (qq.v.). The breach with Byzantium (q.v.) was repaired the following century, but the local Church retained its independence. From the 6th c. the primate of Georgia has borne the title “Catholicos,” and the Church first became autocephalous (q.v.) in the 8th c. Under constant pressure from Persia to the east, the Georgian Church and nation nonetheless achieved a peak of prosperity under the local branch of the Bagratid family (also ruling in Armenia), culminating in the “golden age” of Queen Tamara (d. 1212). Georgian manuscripts from the period of the country’s medieval zenith provide valuable materials for scholars in both Scripture and patristic (qq.v.) studies. This is largely the fruit of medieval Georgian monasticism (q.v.) from its origins in Peter the Iberian (ca. 413–491). It spread throughout the Byzantine Near East, as witnessed by the late medieval foundation on Mt. Athos (q.v.) of the monastery of Iviron. Struggles with both Iran and the Ottoman Empire (q.v.) compelled its last king to plead for Russian protection. The Georgian Kingdom was absorbed into the tsar’s Empire in 1811. Its local church became part of the Russian Church-perhaps the most notable case of Russian ecclesiastical imperialism. Autonomy was again secured, ecclesiastically if not politically, following the Bolshevik coup d’etat in 1917. It remains in effect today as the Georgian Church is experiencing a modest revival under its Catholicos, Ilias II. Chernyshev, director of the Transsoyuz charity, and Carlos Palacio Oriol, president of the Spanish Talgo company, which has confirmed its readiness to support the construction of the church. A Parish of St. Mary Magdalene was founded in 1761 in Madrid. It existed till 1882. In the post-war time, a domestic chapel dedicated to St. Empress Alexandra functioned in the house of the Russian imperial family. In 2001, a Parish of the Nativity of Christ was founded there. Services were held at the former furniture production facility. With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, a Foundation of the Nativity of Christ was registered with the Spanish Ministry of Culture. It was led by the rector of the parish, Rev. Andrey Kordochkin. The Board of Patrons included Archbishop Mark of Yegorievsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s office for institutions abroad, Bishop Nestor of Chersonese and Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna, who lives in Madrid. The official permission to build the church was granted on October 5, 2011. In Autumn 2011, Archbishop Mark of Yegorievsk and Bishop Nestor of Chersonese blessed the foundation stone of the future church, and the construction work began. In Autumn 2012, Patriarch Kirill gave his blessing upon the dedication of the new church to St. Mary Magdalene Equal-to-the-Apostles so that continuity could be restored with the parish that existed in the Spanish capital in the 19 th century. According to the official website of the Moscow Patriarchate, the construction work is expected to be completed in April 2013. In addition to the Church, the parish compound includes administration facilities, a refectory, classrooms for children and housing for the clergy. DECR Communication Service 12 февраля 2013 г. ... Charles, Prince of Wales, Visits the Russian Convent in Gethsemane      On Friday, September 30, 2016, concluding his visit to Israel for the funeral of Shimon Peres, Prince Charles of Wales visited Gethsemane Russian Orthodox Convent. Archimandrite Roman (Krassovsky), Chief of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem, greeted the royal guest at the gates of the convent and told him about the history and daily life of the monastery.      Fr Roman, standing on the courtyard of St Mary Magdalene Church, which overlooks the Old City of Jerusalem, showed Prince Charles the Church of the Resurrection of Christ and the other holy sites of the holy city. Abbess Elizabeth of Gethsemane Convent, standing in the doorway of the grand, royal church, welcomed the prince and offered him the traditional Russian bread and salt.      As the troparion to St Mary Magdalene was sung, Prince Charles approached the crypt of Holy Grand Duchess Elizabeth, upon which he laid a bouquet of flowers from the homeland of his grandmother, Princess Alice of Greece, who was a niece of the saint. The royal guest then lit candles at other holy relics of the church.      Addressing His Royal Highness with warm words of welcome from the ambo, Fr Roman intoned Many Years to him and the Royal Family in English.      The Heir to the British Throne then spoke with the nuns of Gethsemane and the students of the Orthodox Bethany School for Girls (administered by Gethsemane Convent) as he emerged from the church, after which he headed for the crypt of Princess Alice. Archimandrite Roman then performed a brief litany of commemoration, after which Prince Charles laid down flowers upon the grave and lit a candle. He then viewed some old photographs that the convent had preserved over the years. Prince Charles then requested to remain alone in the crypt.      Honoring the memory of his grandmother and expressing his profound gratitude to Archimandrite Roman, Abbess Elizabeth and her nuns, Prince Charles then departed to the airport. With love in Christ,  +KIRILL PATRIARCH OF MOSCOW AND ALL RUSSIA   At the end of January of this year, the aforementioned group of schismatics openly opposed the Holy See of the Ethiopian Church and attempted to form their own " ecclesiastical jurisdiction. " To achieve this goal, the schismatics have carried out armed attacks on churches, clergy and parishioners of the Ethiopian Church. There have been victims among the defenders of churches. The schismatics " actions have been rejected by the majority of Ethiopian Christians. Today, with the blessing of Patriarch Abune Mathias, a solemn prayer for the early cessation of division and the restoration of unity in the faith is being offered at all parishes of the Ethiopian Church. On February 12th a special Churchwide Prayer will be said by Ethiopian believers all around the world. The Synod of the Ethiopian Church has also sent letters asking for support from leaders of the largest Christian communities in the world. The Russian Orthodox Church has never been indifferent to the woes of the brotherly people of Ethiopia and in difficult times has always raised its voice in their defense. The Ethiopian Church is a member of the family of Ancient Oriental Churches. It is not only the largest body in the Pre-Chalcedonian family, but is also one of the largest Christian communities in the world: the number of its members exceeds 60 million people. Ties between the peoples of Russia and Ethiopia date back to the fifteenth century. Regular inter-Church contacts were established in the late 19th century. In 1950s-1980s, they reached a particularly high level, largely thanks to the efforts of Metropolitan Nikodim of Leningrad and Novgorod, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate. These ties are especially strong today and are also carried out within the framework of the Commission for Dialogue between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Ethiopian Church, established in 2018. According to Christian Today, Samer and his family left Syria to come to Texas just days after the Paris attacks. The family was taken to an immigration center near San Antonio. Samer has a wife and two sons, ages 2 and 5. " My very small children are in prison, " Samer told reporters. " I had no idea that the political climate was so against Syrian refugees. If I had known that it was so terrible here I wouldn " t have brought my family. " Christian Today reports that the family has undergone a background check but are not security threats. “They have followed every rule, completed every step in the process that results in asylum seekers being released to live with their families and told to report to court, but they are being treated differently ... the saddest thing about these cases is that these people fled from a government that singled them out because of who they were – Christians,” said Jonathan Ryan, their attorney. “They came to our country seeking protection only to find that we are doing the same thing because of their national origin.” The debate over refugee immigration into the U.S. has continued to grow. About half of the governors in the U.S. have said they oppose settling Syrian refugees in their states. U.S. evangelical leaders released a statement this week saying that “voices of fear” cannot dictate immigration policy. " Moments like these are when Christians cannot remain silent and still. In light of this crisis, we commit ourselves and our churches to actively care for and minister to global refugees with mercy and compassion, both here and abroad, based on God " s compelling concern for all people in need and especially refugees.
