Tweet Нравится Holy Martyr Salome the Georgian (13th century) Memory 20 July (2 August) The details of the life of St. Salome the Georgian are notpreserved. In the Synaxarion of Jerusalem’s Holy CrossMonastery it is written: “On this day (July 20) we commemoratethe martyrdom of Salome the Georgian, who atfirst yielded to the Persian threats and renounced Christ, but later confessed the true Faith. For this she was beheaded and castinto the flames.” In his famous work Pilgrimage, the 18th-century historian andarchbishop Timote (Gabashvili) writes that the godless Persians capturedthe holy martyr Salome and tortured her at Jerusalem’s HolyCross Monastery for defending the name of Christ. Thus it appears that Salome labored at one of the convents in Jerusalem. It is believed that she was tortured to death after the martyrdomof Luka of Jerusalem, around the years 1227–1228. O Christ our God, save our souls through the intercessions of Thy holymartyr Salome! Among them was the hieromonk Kozman, who would end his earthly life as a martyr. The Lives of the Georgian Saints Archpriest Zakaria Machitadze The Lives of the Georgian Saints Archpriest Zakaria Machitadze Since the time of the ancient Greek historians, Georgia has been viewed as an enigma hidden behind impenetrable mountains and a complex language. Little has been written about this small country and its saints. Now, Pravoslavie.Ru presents the entire collection of the Lives of the Georgian saints which has been translated for the first time into English. These lives encompass the seventeen hundred years of Orthodox Christianity in Georgia. The stories of ascetics and bishops, warriors and noblemen are intertwined with the tumultuous history of the Georgian land. Saint Ilia the Righteous (†1907) Commemorated July 20/August 2 Saint Ilia the Righteous (†1907) Archpriest Zakaria Machitadze Saint Ilia, called the “Uncrowned King of Georgia,” the “Father of the Nation” and “the Righteous,” belonged to the noble family Chavchavadze. He was born on October 27, 1837, in the village of Qvareli in Kakheti. He received his primary education at home: his mother instructed him in reading and writing, prayer and the law of God. When he was eight years old, Ilia was sent to study with Archdeacon Nikoloz Sepashvili of Qvareli. The years he spent there left an indelible impression on this holy man’s life. Saint Giorgi of Atsquri (9th–10th centuries) Memory 2 (15) April Saint Giorgi of Atsquri Saint Giorgi of Atsquri Few biographical details about St. Giorgi of Atsquri have been preserved in the writings of the famous 10th-century Georgian hagiographers Giorgi Merchule and Basil of Zarzma. St. Giorgi of Atsquri lived at the end of the 9th and the beginning of the 10th centuries. A member of the aristocratic and pious Shuartqeli family, St. Giorgi was raised and educated in the environs of Georgia’s renowned Opiza Monastery in Klarjeti. Four years after the death of the great feudal lord Giorgi Chorchaneli, St. Giorgi succeeded him as ruler of the Samtskhe region. At that time a bitter conflict arose over who was the rightful heir to Chorchaneli’s inheritance. While serving as the chief political leader of Samtskhe, St. Giorgi also directed the region’s spiritual life, wisely administering the ancient Atsquri diocese for many years. According to tradition, the diocese of Atsquri was founded by the holy Apostle Andrew the First-called, who left there the “Not-Made-By-Hands” icon of the Most Holy Theotokos (known as the Atsquri Icon of the Mother of God) as an offering to the Georgian Church. Ruins of Atsquri fortress. Ruins of Atsquri fortress. Though his literary works have not been preserved, St. Giorgi is also commemorated as a great writer of the Church. In his book The Life of St. Grigol of Khandzta, St. Giorgi Merchule notes that St. Giorgi of Atsquri made some of the most significant contributions to the biographical writings on St. Grigol of Khandzta. St. Giorgi of Atsquri was a close companion of St. Serapion of Zarzma. He was present at his burial and contributed much to the hagiographical writings on his life and works. The Lord God enlightened thee, O Holy Hierarch Giorgi, and set thee on the heights to shine forth as a brilliant lamp. Do thou also enlighten us, the Christian people! Abstract . Every Christian is called to the feat of asceticism. We see examples of ascetic life from the time of the first Christians. Saint Theophan the Recluse gave the first systematic exposition of the significance of asceticism for man. His teaching about the feat is still relevant today. The article examines the saint’s understanding of Christian asceticism, its purpose and stages, the significance of the sacraments of Baptism and Repentance in human life. Special attention is paid to the basics of Christian asceticism, which, according to the teachings of St. Theophan, are: the struggle against sins, surrender to the will of God, spiritual guidance, observance of the rules of Christian asceticism and penitential feeling. Revealing the foundations of the Christian feat, St. Theophan deduces the rules, the fulfillment of which requires self-compulsion and selfresistance. Further, the article discusses exercises that contribute to the development of the inner life of a person, as well as the laws recommended by St. Theophan, the struggle with passions.

Your Eminence Archbishop Mark of Berlin, Germany and Great Britain: I send my heartfelt greetings to you on your 75 th birthday. Having converted to Orthodoxy in your younger years, you devoted the rest of your life to bear witness to the eternal Gospel truths and the undying glory of the Name of Christ. You were faced with many difficulties in your effort to “grow and multiply the Word of God” (Acts 12:24 ), as a result of which the Church received new devoted members seeking salvation. Your spiritual maturity was bolstered by your relationship with renowned elders of Mount Athos, studying the legacy of the Holy Fathers, Slavic languages and literature. Sensing the calling forty years ago, you made your monastic vows and were able to receive the Grace of the Holy Spirit, which joined you to the servants at the altar of the Lord. Since then, you painstakingly perform every obedience that the Church lays upon your shoulders. Of these is the thirty-five years of archpastorl service you have borne. Ruling the dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in Germany, Great Britain and Ireland, you have through the coordination of your efforts strived to bear witness to your contemporaries of the transformative power of “faith which worketh by love” (Galatians 5:6). It gives me joy to note the special attention you always paid to educational efforts and preaching, including that aimed at younger generations. This mission is especially important today, when spiritual and moral values and ancient Christian traditions are being squeezed out of social life. In recognition of your zealous service and your 75 th birthday, I deem it just to grant to you a memorial panaghia. I prayerfully wish you strength, Divine aid and success in your future archpastoral labors. May the Lord preserve you in good health for many years through the intercession of the Queen of Heaven. With love in Christ, +KIRILL, PATRIARCH OF MOSCOW AND ALL RUSSIA His Holiness Patriarch Kirill The Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia 31 января 2016 г. Holy Trinity Seminary Announces a New Publishing Endeavor Jordanville, NY, May 26, 2015 The publishing work of Holy Trinity Monastery is expanding into the academic field with the creation of a new imprint. Under the editorship of Dr Vitaly Permiakov, Holy Trinity Seminary Press will publish studies relating to the theology, history, and liturgy of the Orthodox Church. Liturgical texts and guidance for the spiritual life will continue to be the mainstays of Holy Trinity Publications’ flagship imprint, the Printshop of St Job of Pochaev. Archimandrite Luke, abbot of Holy Trinity Monastery and seminary rector, commented on the new project: “Our mandate has always been to publish books for the spiritual edification of the faithful and for the conversion of the world around us. Now we seek to expand this mission to include works that elucidate the Church " s Tradition in a scholarly manner. These books will both support our task of educating the next generation of Orthodox priests and address the growing challenges of an increasingly secularized academia.” Assistant to the dean Priest Ephraim Willmarth sees a lack of traditional and patristic textbooks available for seminary courses in the English language. He hopes that the new seminary press “will have a significant impact on theological education in our seminary classrooms, in distance education, for those educating themselves, and in other seminaries.” Towards this aim, HTSP will release Archbishop Averky’s The Four Gospels, the first volume in his series, Commentary on the Holy Scriptures of the New Testament. Writing in the tradition of biblical exegetes such as St John Chrysostom and Blessed Theophylact of Bulgaria, Vladyka Averky allows the reader to see the life of Christ as an unfolding narrative in accessible, direct language. This translation will be an indispensable addition to the library of every student of the Gospels. The first title released under the new imprint will be Chosen for His People: A Biography of Patriarch Tikhon by Jane Swan. Ninety years after St Tikhon’s repose, Dr Swan’s modest but carefully crafted monograph remains the only complete biography of this holy confessor available in English. This new edition has been updated and revised in light of newly discovered sources. 27 мая 2015 г. Смотри также Комментарии Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку

Michael Prokurat, Alexander Golitzin, Michael D. Peterson Скачать epub pdf KNOWLEDGE KNOWLEDGE. In Greek, gnosis, the term figures prominently in the New Testament writings, especially in the Pauline and Johannine books, later on in early Christianity, and throughout the Orthodox ascetic and theological tradition to the present day. “This is eternal life,” says Christ, “to know [ginoskein] you, the true God” ( Jn 17:3 ). The experiential character of knowledge implied in this text has governed the treatment of this term in subsequent Orthodox Christian writers. The knowledge of God (q.v.) is first and last an experience that transforms the recipient, and only secondarily a matter of correct form or language, i.e., an intellectual activity. In early Christianity this understanding was challenged on two fronts, from outside the Church via Plato and Greek philosophy, and from inside by gnosticism (qq.v.). The latter advanced the idea of a gnosis at once technical, that is, based on a secret tradition and involving what amounted often to “passwords” to the higher spiritual realms, and ontological or “predestinarian,” i.e., that one was born with or without a capacity for the saving knowledge. For Plato, Plotinus, and Neoplatonism (qq.v.) generally, the knowledge communicated by philosophy, while including a generous amount of the experiential or “mystical,” still embraced a fundamentally intellectual and rational activity, an education almost in the university sense, and hence was limited to the elite of the Greco-Roman world. The Christian response began with the Apologists and Irenaeus of Lyons, and then with the Alexandrian school represented by Clement and Origen (qq.v.). For the latter two, knowledge of God is, as in Platonism or Gnosticism, the end or goal of Christian life. That life, however, is rooted in an ecclesial setting, placed firmly in the context of an asceticism (q.v.) based on the Gospels, and joined to the idea of the believer’s appropriation of the work of Christ. Subsequent generations, in particular the Desert Fathers, Cappadocians, Evagrius of Pontus (qq.v.), and the Macarius of the Macarian Homilies, further elaborated the notion of the Christian, preeminently the monk, as the true “philosopher.” Finally, in the writing of Maximus the Confessor, knowledge is subordinated to the love of God, realized in Christ and at work in the believer.
