Protests greet donation of Austrian Catholic church to Orthodox/Православие.Ru Protests greet donation of Austrian Catholic church to Orthodox Vienna, 29 November 2010 The head of the Roman Catholic Church in Austria has denied being " anti-Polish " after members of Polish congregations in Vienna protested against his decision to offer one of the city's Catholic churches to Serbian Orthodox Christians - writes Jonathan Luxmoore. " In recent weeks, many stormy events have taken place around a church in the Neulerchenfeld district, " said Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the chairperson of the Austrian Catholic Bishops' Conference. " Untruths and simplifications have been spread, filling me with great sadness, " said the cardinal. " It has gone so far that I have been accused of deliberately acting against Polish Catholics, and this information has even circulated in southern Poland. I must assure you the truth is quite different. " Schönborn was reacting to protests by local Polish Catholics against news that the city's Our Lady of Sorrows church would be handed over in June 2011 to members of the 160 000-strong Serbian Orthodox community. More than 130 Catholic priests from Poland are currently ministering in the Vienna archdiocese, where Polish Catholicism is one of 36 foreign-language communities recognised by the Catholic Church. The cardinal had said in a 19 November 2010 open letter he had promised to donate the church to the Orthodox after determining it could no longer be maintained by its declining congregation, and would otherwise have had to be closed and sold. The move had faced protests by local Catholics, including a large group of Poles and their priest, the Rev Tadeusz Cichon, who rejected Cardinal Schönborn's explanation and accused him of an " act of unfriendliness towards Poles " . In his letter, the cardinal noted that the number of Christians of other denominations had been growing rapidly. " We must help them in Christian solidarity, among other things by transferring places of worship to them, " said Schönborn.

Veterans Day Moleben Prayer Service/Православие.Ru Tweet Нравится Veterans Day Moleben Prayer Service Source: The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA November 12, 2015      On November 11th, 2015, the nation’s Veterans Day, at 11 o'clock in the morning upon the request of Ukrainian-American Veterans a moleben service was held for all the Veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. The moleben took place by the newly-dedicated monument to the Ukrainian-American men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces, which is located near the St. Andrew Memorial Church in South Bound Brook, NJ. His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony, in the presence of veterans, local clergy, seminarians, consistory workers and the faithful served the service sung by the St. Sophia's Seminary Choir. Following the conclusion of the prayer, Metropolitan Anthony stated that we have to extend our gratitude for the service of the military personnel of our country during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War as these individuals committed to a greater cause and accepted the challenge to defend our nation. Also, Metropolitan Anthony noted that Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who gave their lives and those who perished while in service. In conclusion, everybody venerated the cross with a greeting word from His Eminence " Christ is Among Us. " Most years Veterans Day passes with little or no mention in our parish communities. Historically and traditionally, Veterans Day has been more a civic than a sacred observance. As with Memorial Day, Thanksgiving Day, and others, Veterans Day is not a part of the liturgical calendar — although sometimes local congregations will observe that day in some manner, like ours did today, near the beautiful Ukrainian American Veteran Monument. Serbian Patriarch Calls on the Authorities to Stop Terrorizing the Church and the Faithful Source: Union of Orthodox Journalists The Patriarch requested that all those who were arrested during the protests against adoption of the new law on the freedom of religion be released. The Primate of the Serbian Orthodox Church, His Holiness Patriarch Irinej of Serbia, called on the Montenegrin authorities to end the brutal terror against the Serbian Church, its clergy and parishioners. His appeal is published on  the website of the Serbian Orthodox Church  on December 27. “His Holiness Patriarch Irinej of Serbia calls on the state authorities of Montenegro, especially the employees of the Ministry of the Interior, to immediately stop the brutal terror against the Serbian Orthodox Church, its clergy and faithful people,” Patriarch Irinej said in his appeal. The Primate of the Serbian Church drew the attention of the authorities that after the fall of fascism and the end of Bolshevik terror, the beating by the Montenegrin police of the Serbian bishop, clergy, and believers is an unprecedented case for Europe. “The Serbian Patriarch demands that deputies, political representatives of the Orthodox Serbian people in Montenegro, as well as everyone else who was arrested yesterday and today for protecting their shrines from state terror and robbery, should be immediately and without fail released from prison,” said Patriarch Irinej. The Primate of the Serbian Church concluded his official appeal to the authorities of Montenegro with words of support addressed to his archbishops, clergy, monks and the flock. “His Holiness Patriarch Irinej asks the Lord to reason with the people who lead Montenegro to stop violence and theft of church property and provide full support to the archbishops, clergy, monks and believers of the Serbian Orthodox Church so that they fight and do not refuse to defend the Serbian Orthodox Church anywhere and whenever possible,” stressed the Serbian Patriarch. After the mass brawl and detention by the police of all opposition deputies who tried to prevent the adoption of the anti-church law, the Montenegrin Parliament adopted the law “On Freedom of Religion and Belief and the Legal Status of Religious Communities”. The members of parliament who voted for the adoption of the law rejected all 117 amendments proposed by the Serbian Church.

Serbian Patriarch Porfirije Gives Interview to Serbian National Television Photo: YouTube screenshot In his interview to the Serbian national television RTS, His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia spoke about many issues, including the situation in the Serbian Orthodox Church, the dialogue with the Catholic church, the relationships between Moscow and Constantinople, and the Ukrainian issue. Concerning the Ukrainian issue, His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije said that the Serbian Orthodox Church is an Autocephalous church that has its internal order and follows the Canon at this moment. “The actions of Constantinople in Ukraine are not in accordance with the tradition of the Church. We are on the side of order and canon,” said Patriarch Porfirije. He also added that “Many are going to say that we (the Serbian Orthodox Church) are on the Russian side. But we are on the side of order and canon.” Answering the question about Pope’s possible visit to Serbia, he said that it depends on many factors. “I will not think alone. Everything is a product of assembly thinking… As far as I know, there has never been any initiative by the Vatican… and Patriarch Irinej said that it would be good and useful for the relationship between the two churches, but whether [it will happen] and when… [only] God knows.” Commenting on problems in the Serbian Orthodox Church, he said that, although he is not a prophet, “similar actions, like the ones in Ukraine, will not happen again, because it caused great upheavals in the relations between the Local Churches. And that will be a lesson for everyone.” In his interview, Patriarch Porfirije said the Church should only engage in politics in the original sense, in the sense of caring for the common good. When he was asked about same-sex marriage, Patriarch Porfirije said that for the Church marriage is defined in the Old Testament between the first man and woman. He added that the Church needs to communicate with everybody, to try to solve problems, and, primarily, to bear witness to the faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Serbian Orthodox Church Bishops’ Council Expresses its Position on Church Crisis in Ukraine Source: DECR Photo: www.spc.rs The position taken by the Serbian Orthodox Church with regard to the church crisis in Ukraine caused by the recent decisions of the Patriarchate of Constantinople has been formulated by the Bishops’ Council which took place on November 6-7, 2018, in Belgrade. As is known, by its decisions of October 11 the Patriarchate of Constantinople ‘revoked’ the decision made over 300 years ago to transfer the Metropolitan of Kiev to the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate thus encroaching on the canonical territory of the Russian Orthodox Church. In addition, in defiance of the canonical order, the Synod of the Church of Constantinople has admitted to communion the leaders of the Ukrainian schism and declared its readiness to implement a project ‘for Ukrainian autocephaly’. The Bishops Council of the Serbian Orthodox Church stated with regret that ‘the Patriarchate of Constantinople has made a decision not grounded on canons to rehabilitate and recognize as bishops the two chiefs of the schismatic groups in Ukraine – Philaret Denisenko and Makariy Maletich with their episcopate and clergy’. It is pointed out in the council’s decision that in due time the former was canonically deposed and later anathematized and the latter was deprived of the apostolic continuity as spiritually belonging to the sect of the so-called self-ordained ministers ‘due to which the Sacred Council of Bishops’ regards this decision of the Synod of Constantinople as not obligatory for the Serbian Orthodox Church’. As it is pointed out in the issued document, the Council of the Serbian Church does not recognize the above-mentioned persons and their followers as Orthodox bishops and clergy and therefore does not accept the liturgical and canonical communion with them and their supporters. The Council addressed the Patriarchate of Constantinople and all the rest Local Churches with a proposal to consider in the nearest future the issue of autocephaly and the topic of Orthodox Diaspora at a Pan-Orthodox Council ‘in order to reaffirm and strengthen the conciliarity and unity of the Orthodox Church and to avoid in the future the temptation through which Holy Orthodoxy is going now’.

Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia Addresses the Faithful of the UOC The Primate of the Serbian Orthodox Church is concerned about the violation of church order in the country. The condition for the unity and preservation of the true Orthodox faith is the preservation of the canonical order of the Church, said His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia in a video message to Orthodox believers in Ukraine. “It is crucially important for us to have the unity of faith, so that we have the unity of dogmas. But at the same time, the condition for the unity and preservation of the true Orthodox faith is the preservation of the canonical order of the Church,” said the Primate of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Patriarch Porfirije noted that the Serbian Patriarchate has consistently supported the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church and expressed concern about the violation of church order in Ukraine. “We – Orthodox Serbians – perceive the Orthodox Ukrainian people and all Orthodox Christians as our brothers. Meanwhile, our concern about order is not an expression of our attitude towards someone with more sympathy, and towards someone with less sympathy. The canonical order is a condition without which we, as Orthodox Christians, cannot testify about our Lord and Savior in the correct way,” said the Serbian Patriarch. Therefore, he continued, it is very important to secure the canonical order in Ukraine, which is in crisis today. “The jurisdiction of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church headed by Metropolitan Onuphry will be supported by our Church and this will be evidence of the unity between Orthodox Christians,” Patriarch Porfirije stressed. The video message of the Primate of the Serbian Orthodox Church was recorded after his meeting with the Chancellor of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Anthony of Borispol and Brovary, which took place in Belgrade on May 19, 2021.
