| The Honorable Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago, has officially proclaimed January 27th, the feast day of the revered Serbian patron saint of education and culture, as Saint Sava Academy Day in Chicago in recognition of the school’s work and for its contributions to the community. The Mayor’s proclamation also noted that Saint Sava Academy is “the only full-time elementary school in Chicago offering dual language education in both Serbian and Russian languages,” “offers a safe community where students are able to express their culture and religious beliefs,” and “sustains an Orthodox faith-based education that provides students a strong spiritual compass both inside and outside the classroom.” Leaders of Holy Resurrection Cathedral and Saint Sava Academy warmly welcomed the Mayor’s proclamation. “The Mayor’s proclamation of St. Sava Academy Day is a very important and deserved recognition for our school, and an honor for our whole community, and I would like to thank our Academy Administration and Board of Trustees for their work which led to this decision,” said the Very Reverend Protopresbyter Darko Spasojevic, Cathedral Dean. Marko Bojovic, Academy Principal, added: “I am truly grateful to Mayor Emanuel for proclaiming January 27th as ‘St. Sava Academy Day’ in this wonderful City of Chicago. I also thank our Cathedral clergy, Academy Board of Trustees, faculty and staff for working as one unified team in achieving the mission of St. Sava Academy and for meeting the needs of our students. Our students have yet another reason to be proud of their school.” Reverend Dr. Vasilije Vranic, priest in charge of the Cathedral’s educational programs, noted the historical significance of the proclamation. “Sts. Sebastian of Jackson, Mardarije of Libertyville, and Nikolaj of Zicha organized the parishes of the Serbian Orthodox Church as ‘church-school congregations.’ Looking at the example of St. Sava, the first archbishop of Serbia, they recognized the indispensable role that Orthodox-based education, rooted in our culture and traditions, ought to have in the life of our communities on this continent. This proclamation confirms and attests that indeed our efforts in perpetuating the legacy of our great spiritual ancestors through our parochial school and other educational programs are bearing a noteworthy fruit. | " The establishment of the Theological School of the Church of Cyprus comes at a time when our country is in need of shining examples, " said President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades who inaugurated the School together with Archbishop Chrysostomos II on the grounds of the Archbishopric. Archbishop Chrysostomos described a particularly glorious day for the Church of Cyprus, noting that the establishment of the Theological School serves a growing need of the Church of Cyprus to cultivate its own Theological Education. " We express joy and jubilation because we see our ardent desire, " he said, " fulfilled. " " The theological school will aim to promote religious beliefs, to educate about Christ and to instil in the hearts of the clergy the desired ethos, " he added. " It will promote scientific education and solemn life and the cultivation of critical thinking. " President Anastasiades said that the Theological School of the Church of Cyprus was " founded during a difficult and crucial time for the future of our country. " He said it comes at a time when our country is now in need of shining examples. It will remedy its moral standing and regain its freedom and dignity at all levels. The President pledged that the government will stand by the new school and support the Church of Cyprus in this effort. In his message, which was read during the ceremony, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew said that he was deeply moved and satisfied to be informed of the decision of the Church of Cyprus to found a theological school. The Ecumenical Patriarchate, as guardian of the living theological truth, looks forward to the efforts of the Theological School of Cyprus. He also congratulated Archbishop Chrysostomos and the Holy Synod and wished the school to become a centre of theological education and initiation of students in the spirit and ethos of the Orthodox Church. In his address, the Director of the Theological School, Deacon Kyprianos Kountouris, said it was imperative to establish a school which aims to maintain university-level standards. He noted that the school begins with a four-year undergraduate theology programme that was adopted by the competent bodies of the Ministry of Education and Culture and this year is offered to twenty-five students. During the first year of study there will be fourteen classes taught by ten teachers, two of whom will be visiting professors from theological schools of Greece and Lebanon as well as the wider academic world of Europe. | New anti-Church bill introduced into Ukrainian Parliament Kiev, October 31, 2016 The chief goal of bill no. 5309 is the creation of discriminatory norms for millions of Ukrainian citizens who belong to the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC-MP), said the chairman of the Synodal Legal Department Archpriest Alexander Bakhov, commenting on the new legislative initiative of the elected representatives of the people to the UOC-MP’s Information and Education Department. On October 26 the Verkhovna Rada (the Ukrainian Parliament) registered bill no. 5309 “On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine ‘On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations’ as Regards the Names of Religious Organizations (Associations) Which are a Part of the Structure of a Religious Organization (Association), Whose Administrative Center is outside Ukraine—in the State Which, as Recognized by the Law, Committed Military Aggression against Ukraine and/or Temporarily Occupied a Part of the Territory of Ukraine,” reports the Orthodox Life portal. The draft law’s initiators, Deputies Igor Brichenko, Alexander Briginets, Ivan Krulko, Yaroslav Markevich, Sergey Vysotskiy and Igor Lapin, have motioned to compel the religious organization, whose administrative center is in the state that has been recognized by Ukraine as an aggressor state, to indicate in its name the full statutory name of the foreign religious organization to which it belongs, with the possible addition of the words “in Ukraine” and/or an indication of its place in the structure of the foreign religious organization. In the view of Archpriest Alexander Bakhov, “this is another absurd bill through which its authors are endeavoring to discriminate against the UOC-MP and the faithful of our Church”. “The deputies constantly forget that all the religious organizations are equal before the law, and restrictions such as these are, first of all, infringements of the rights and freedoms of the Ukrainian citizens who are members of the religious organization against which such initiatives are aimed,” the archpriest stressed. “Yes, the state has recognized an aggressor country. But what does this have to do with the UOC-MP? They think the center of our Church is in Moscow, but it’s not. Our center is in Kiev. According to the Charter (Tomos), signed by Patriarch Alexey II in 1990, the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church has nearly full administrative independence from the Synod of the Moscow Patriarchate.
