A New Mission Established in the Kingdom of Tonga February 21, 2012 If many Russians consider Australia the end of the Earth, then the Kingdom of Tonga in the south-western part of the Pacific Ocean, consisting of 176 islands, represents the furthest reaches of the globe. Tonga’s islands were discovered for Europe by the Dutch seamen Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire in 1616. In 1773, the English explorer James Cook called the archipelago the “Friendly Islands.” In 1900, the archipelago became a British protectorate. At the same time, Tonga preserved all rights to self-governance. The islands’ independence was granted in 1970. Tonga is now a member nation of the UN, the South Pacific Commission and the Forum of Pacific Islands. Tonga is a small kingdom, world-renowned as the first of all nations to see the rising sun. It is also the only state in Oceania which was never colonized. Ruling Tonga now is His Highness King George V. Thanks to its independence, the nation was able to preserve its ancient culture and traditions. The nation’s population is very homogeneous; small groups of Europeans and people from neighboring lands number no more than 1,000 on any of Tonga’s islands. The population of Tonga practices various forms of Christianity. According to official statistics, Methodists comprise the largest group (48%), though there are many Catholics (16%), Mormons (30%) as well as Anglicans, Adventists and Pentecostals. It is a 4 ?-hour flight to Tonga from Sydney, Australia, which is almost halfway to Hawaii. The capital of this constitutional monarchy is Nuku’alofa, where, with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion, Mitred Protopriest Michael Protopopoff visited to open the first Orthodox Christian mission. Fr Michael was accompanied by Siluan Vea, a native Tongan, who is eager to see the light of Orthodoxy shine in his homeland. The official visit took place on February 2-7, 2012. A large house was rented, which will be outfitted with a chapel, administrative center and rooms for pilgrims. In order to open a parish, it was necessary to obtain the support of local representatives of the Royal Government, and the heads of other Christian confessions, which was accomplished during the visit. On Saturday, February 4, Fr Michael baptized two children of Russian-Tongan parents, and on Sunday, the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated. Seven people partook of the Holy Gifts during the service, laying the foundation for the Orthodox faith in this Pacific monarchy. www.rocor.org.au 24 февраля 2012 г. ... John Anthony McGuckin New Martyrs THOMAS KITSON Orthodoxy calls those who died witnessing to their faith in the eras following Constantine’s Edict of Milan (313) the “New Martyrs.” The title was first used for the victims of heretical rulers during the Byzantine Iconoclastic controversies that preceded the Triumph of Orthodoxy in 843. While there was no systematic persecution during the Ottoman period, Christians were often punished for activities that directly threatened the Islamic faith. New Martyrs of the Turkish Yoke (commemorated on the third Sunday after Pentecost) suffered for openly preaching Christianity, for converting others (or reverting to the faith after adopting Islam), and for causing disturbances by promoting Christian revival (which, beginning with the 19th- century liberation movements, often carried ethnic and national overtones). There were numbers of New Martyrs in China and Japan also. The actively atheist Soviet government encouraged varying degrees of organized church persecution after the 1917 Russian Revolution, involving many thousands of martyrs. In 1981 the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia recognized many Soviet victims, hierarchs, clergy, monks, and laity (including Tsar Nicholas II and his family) as New Martyrs and commemorates them on January 25, the date of Metropolitan Vladimir of Kiev’s martyrdom in 1918. In recent years the Moscow patriarchate has also systematically extended the lists of the New Martyrs of Russia. Many other New Martyrs suffered under the Nazis (including Mother Maria Skobtsova) and their allies (the Serbian New Martyrs are commemorated on June 15), as well as subsequently under the violently repressive communist regimes in Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, and other parts of the Soviet Eastern bloc. Photo: orthodox-europe.org On the tenth Sunday after Pentecost, 21 August, 2022, more than sixty Ukrainian refugees from the Refugee Centre in Nyon, Switzerland (some forty kilometers from Geneva), were welcomed to the Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Cross in Geneva for the Divine Liturgy. They joined the many members of the Cathedral parish of Ukrainian descent, as well as the many refugees who are already part of the community, in the reception of the Divine Mysteries and the lifting up of prayers for the cessation of bloodshed in Ukraine. Following the Liturgy, co-served by Archpriests Pavel Tzvetkoff and Emilian Pocinoc, a reception was arranged for the guests, including a generously prepared meal and coffee. Fr Emilian spoke with the visitors for some time, assuring them of the spiritual home that each of them has in the Geneva Cathedral and the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, and rejoicing with them in the unity God provides in His Church, even in times of trial; before sending them forth in peace with the hope of a return visit in the nearest future. Synaxis of the Hierarchs of Novgorod, Buried in the Cathedral of the Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia) in Novgorod Commemorated on February 10      The Synaxis of Novgorod Hierarchs is also celebrated on October 4 and on the third Sunday after Pentecost. On October 4, 1439 Saint John (September 7) appeared to the presiding hierarch Saint Euthymius (March 11) and ordered him to serve a special panikhida in memory of those buried at the Sophia cathedral (the Russian princes and Archbishops of Novgorod, and all Orthodox Christians) on the Feast of the Hieromartyr Hierotheus, first Bishop of Athens. Then the incorrupt relics of Saint John (September 7) were uncovered. Afterwards, the Synaxis was established to mark the glorification of the Novgorod hierarchs. E.E. Golubinsky says that because these hierarchs remained unknown at the time of their glorification, he determined this date for their common celebration was established in the period between the time of the Moscow Council of 1549 and the time of the formation of the Holy Synod (E.E. Golubinsky, History of the Canonization of Saints in the Russian Church. Moscow, 1903, p. 157). Included in the Synaxis of Novgorod hierarchs are: Saint Joachim of Korsun, first bishop of Novgorod (988-1030); Saint Luke the Jew, bishop (October 15, 1060); Saint Germanus, bishop (1078-1096); Saint Arcadius, bishop (September 18); Saint Gregory, archbishop (May 24, 1193); Saint Martyrius, archbishop (August 24, 1199); Saint Anthony, archbishop (October 8, 1231); Saint Basil the Lame, archbishop (July 3, 1352); Saint Simeon, archbishop (June 15, 1421); Saint Gennadius, archbishop (December 4); Saint Pimen, archbishop (1553-1571); Aphthonius, metropolitan (April 6, 1653). The relics of these saints were buried or transferred to Novgorod’s Sophia Cathedral (except for Saint Germanus, Saint Gennadius and Saint Pimen) therefore, in some sources their names are not included in the Synaxis. The October 4 celebration was established in connection with the memory of the holy Prince Vladimir Yaroslavich of Novgorod (+ 1052), and the February 10 Synaxis of the Novgorod hierarchs is celebrated in connection with the holy Princess Anna of Novgorod (+ 1056). Besides those mentioned, hierarchs who have separate commemorations are: Saint Nikita the Hermit, bishop (January 31); Saint Niphon, bishop (April 8); Saint John, archbishop (September 7); Saint Theoctistus, archbishop (December 23); Saint Moses, archbishop (January 25); Saint Euthymius, archbishop (March 11); Saint Jonah, archbishop (November 5); Saint Serapion, archbishop (March 16).
