The Calmer of Storms: Commentary on the Gospel for the Ninth Sunday After Pentecost Cooperating with God’s Work in Our Lives: On the Ninth Sunday after Pentecost In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, in today’s Gospel we hear how our Lord came to His disciples walking on the water in the midst of a storm. We hear how Saint Peter through faith joins Him on the water. Then Saint Peter becomes distracted by the storm and cries out “Lord, save me!” (Matthew 14:30) Our Lord reaches out and catches him and says “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:31)

I cordially greet you all — reverend Fathers, brothers, and sisters — on this Sunday. Today at the Divine Liturgy we heard a passage from the Gospel in which the Holy Apostle transmits a slice of human life. It is very similar to the reality in which we all live. Just as in ancient Palestine, the Word of God is heard in all the churches. Then it sounded from the Savior’s mouth, and now it sounds from the pages of Holy Scripture.

Today’s Gospel of the talents is perhaps well-known to us – but like any other Gospel, each time that we read it, new points strike us. Firstly, we may notice that in this Gospel the Lord gives each of His servants a different number of talents. We are not equal to one another – we are different from one another.

I have already commented this parable five years ago, and the text was put on the webpage of the parish. This parable is part of the Gospel of Saint Matthew dealing with the Coming of the Kingdom, which is the time of the Church, or in other words, the time of repentance. You may not remember, but I had stressed two facts:

But when the king wanted to receive this money from him, it turned out that he had nothing with which to pay him, and the king forgave his debt. This man, recognizing the gravity of his financial situation, decided to collect money from his own debtors. Meeting a man who owed him 100 denarii, he began to choke him, demanding repayment of the debt (Matthew 18:23-35).

I was completely caught off guard. Though I had been in a number of different Churches over the years, I had never been in a parish of Russian background for the feast of Pentecost. Thus I had missed the Slavic practice of bringing trees into Church for the feast of Pentecost. It was wonderful – like going into Church only to find a forest.
