Russian artists create unique icons for Belgrade cathedral Moscow, March 24, 2017 Photo: http://mkrf.ru      Russian specialists have created unique and unprecedented large-scale icons for the looming Cathedral of St. Sava on Belgrade’s Vraar plateau. The mosaic design for the Belgrade church was decided upon at a recent Moscow session of the special commission for adorning the church, reports the site of the Russian Ministry of Culture. Participants in the meeting, chaired by the head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, noted the high artistic and professional level of the mosaics, created on an unprecedented scale, for which there are nor analogous works in modern monumental art. The members of the commission also stressed the special importance of this project as evidence of the centuries-old friendship between the Russian and Serbian peoples, and the brotherhood between the Russian and Serbian Orthodox Churches. Photo: http://mkrf.ru The project for adorning the St. Sava Cathedral in Belgrade was implemented with the participation of the Russian Ministry of Culture, the Russian Academy of Arts, the Rossotrudnichestvo federal agency for humanitarian cooperation, the Gazprom Neft oil company, and the Society for the Erection of the Church of St. Sava on Vraar. The Russian Ministry of Culture announced a competition to design the mosaic decoration of St. Sava’s Cathedral in 2014. The Moscow International Fund for Assistance of UNESCO under the leadership of the Russian Academy of Art’s Nikolai Mukhin won the contest. A solemn presentation of the mosaic decorations for the dome in St. Sava’s took place on December 3, 2016, with the participation of Serbian president Tomislav Nikolic. St. Sava’s Cathedral was conceived of as the patriarchal church for the Serbian Orthodox Church, and is the largest Orthodox Church in Europe. Its construction began in the 1930s on the place where the relics of St. Sava (1175-1236), the founder and first primate of the autocephalous Serbian Orthodox Church, were burned by Turkish order. Photo: http://mkrf.ru      After the 1941 bombing of Belgrade construction on the temple ceased altogether, resuming only in 1985. The inside surface area for mosaics is 183,000 square feet. 24 марта 2017 г. Priests to visit inmates in investigation isolators/Православие.Ru Priests to visit inmates in investigation isolators Moscow, December 15, 2013 The Patriarchate of Moscow and the Russian Federation " s Federal Service of Execution of Punishments (FSEP) in Moscow have signed an agreement, which allows priests to visit inmates in investigation isolators, reports ITAR-TASS . On behalf of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia the agreement was signed by Archbishop Arseny of Istra. He thanked the chief of the capital " s FSEP for bringing up the question on the legal position of the clergymen who visit investigation isolators. " The Patriarchate of Moscow includes the Diocese of Moscow, and, like other dioceses of our country, it labors in the sphere of care for those who have lost their freedom or are carrying out their sentences. I hope that those years of the clergy " s ministry will be appreciated positively, and now (in this agreement) all those clauses are described in detail, as these are state institutions and they have their own orders and terms, which must not be breached, " said Archbishop Arseny. In the agreement, according to the Hierarch, the Patriarchate of Moscow undertakes to follow all these statutes, while the FSEP administration undertakes not to impede celebration of services and spiritual care for those individuals who will wish to meet with a priest and to receive a spiritual guidance. In his turn, one of the developers of this agreement, chairman of the Synodal Department of the Patriarchate for Ministry in Prisons Bishop Irinarch of Krasnogorsk has informed, that " the agreement, first of all, stipulates giving spiritual and pastoral care for convicts, but not only this. It also includes care for staff members, who work in FSEP institutions, as well as students, who are studying today but tomorrow will come to work in this field " . " Ministry in prisons in the Russian Orthodox Church is many-sided. Today we are speaking, first of all, about clergymen’s access to penitentiaries. But there are also re-socialization issues. A person can spend here one month, two, six months or even more. And during this time the atmosphere has an affect on the person. He or she may give in psychologically, his or her health may fail, and so on. And when the person is released (if he or she does not receive a sentence), then he or she will need preparation for civil life, too. And our task is to render them a spiritual, psychological, and sometimes even material support, " he noted, adding that staff members themselves need some support.
