Archive Clergy of the Northern Deaneries of the Eastern American Diocese of ROCOR call for the protection of the persecuted Ukrainian Orthodox Church 24 March 2023 year 19:33 On Wednesday, 22 March, 2023, the Great Lenten Pastoral Retreat of the northern deaneries of the Eastern American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia concluded with the celebration of the Liturgy of Pre-Sanctified Gifts at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY. The services were led by His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of ROCOR, along with His Grace Bishop Luke of Syracuse, the brethren and a multitude of diocesan clerics. Singing at the services was a unified choir of monastics and students of Holy Trinity Seminary under the direction of Deacon Nicholas Kotar and Priest Efrem Willmarth. The gathering issued a resolution calling for the protection of the persecuted Ukrainian Orthodox Church.  The resolution  states: " Having gathered in Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, New York, for the Lenten retreat and conference of clergy of the northern deaneries of the Eastern American Diocese, we, clergy and monastics, having bowed down in worship before the Cross, communed of the Holy Mysteries, and honored the memory of the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste, raised up our prayers for the flock entrusted to us. We prayed especially for our persecuted brothers and sisters of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, led by His Beatitude Onuphry, Metropolitan of Kiev & All Ukraine. As citizens of the United States – founded 250 years ago on the principles of religious rights and freedoms – we ask all of the Orthodox Christians living in this country, as well as its politicians, representatives of various governmental institutions and social organizations, to raise their voices in defense of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, her archpastors, clergy, monastics, and the millions of parishioners who have been subjected to years of persecution by their own government. Having learned of the closure of the Near and Far Caves of the Kiev Caves Lavra – the cradle of Orthodoxy in Rus’ and the looming eviction of all of its monks and inhabitants, including the students of the Kiev Theological Schools we express our vigorous protest against the actions of the Ukrainian government toward the canonical Church, which nourishes the overwhelming majority of that country’s citizens " . Archive Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk completes his visit to Rome 14 February 2020 year 09:44 On 13 th February 2020, after his meeting with Pope Francis, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, visited  Libreria Romani book store in Rome, where the Italian edition of his books – Volumes 2 and 6 of the series  Jesus Christ. His Life and Teaching  – was presented.  Volume 2, entitled “Sermon on the Mount,” is dedicated entirely to the moral teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ, while Volume 6, entitled “Death and Resurrection,” tells about the last days of the earthly life of the Lord Jesus Christ, His sufferings, death and resurrection. Presenting the books was Archbishop Antonio Menini, representative of the Vatican’s Secretariat of Sate, former Apostolic Nuncio to the Russian Federation. Among those who attended the event were Prof. Adriano Roccucci, specialist in the contemporary church history; Ms. Giovanna Paravicini, cultural attaché of the Vatican’s representation to Russia; Mr. Peter Humeniuk, head of the Department for Relations with Russia of the  Kirche in Not  International Catholic Charitable Foundation; Rev. Hyacinthe Destivelle, staff member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity; Archpriest Kirill Kaleda, rector of the Church of the Russian New Martyrs and Confessors in Butovo, Moscow; and Rev. Alexander Aleshin, vice-chairman of the Synodal Department for Church Charity and Social Ministry. Speaking of his books about Jesus Christ, Metropolitan Hilarion noted that they offer an Orthodox response to more than two centuries of development of the New Testament studies in the West. The DECR chairman wished to the Italian readers “to discover Christ not only as a teacher of morality, but as God and Saviour.” After the presentation Metropolitan Hilarion and those accompanying him departed for Moscow. At the Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport the DECR chairman was seen off by Mr. Alexander Avdeyev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to the Holy See, and Rev. Jaromir Zadrapa, staff member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. During his working visit to Rome Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk met with Pope Francis and Cardinal Kurt Koch , president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. Together with Cardinal Koch the Russian hierarch chaired the session of the Working Group for Cultural and Social Cooperation between the Roman Catholic Church and the Russian Orthodox Church. The DECR chairman also took part in the conference that marked the 4 th  anniversary of the historic meeting between Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill in Havana on 12 th  February 2016. New Monument to Tsesarevich Alexei Unveiled in Crimea Paul Gilbert      On 29th September, a new monument to Tsesarevich Alexei Nikolaevich was unveiled in the courtyard of St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in the Crimean city of Yalta. The site was chosen in memory of the historic visit for the consecration of the cathedral by Emperor Nicholas II and his family in 1902. The monument was a joint project through the efforts of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society (IOPS), with the support of the Revival of Cultural Heritage Fund. The unveiling and consecration ceremony was attended by local parishioners, pupils of the St. Tsarevich Alexei School, representatives of IOPS, the Revival of Cultural Heritage Fund, the descendants of the Patriotic War of 1812, members of the Union of Zealots in Memory of Emperor Nicholas II, as well as representatives of the Russian nobility and the Russian Imperial House.      The consecration ceremony of the bust was performed by rector of St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Archpriest Adam Dmytrenko, who at the end of the liturgy read words of congratulation from Lazarus, Metropolitan of Simferopol and Crimea: Dear Brothers and Sisters! I cordially congratulate all of you on this auspicious occasion - the opening and consecration of the monument to the Holy Passion Bearer Tsesarevich Alexiei This young man belonged to God " s chosen pious family of the last Russian emperor. His life was filled with many trials - a serious illness, years of hard times and a long period of imprisonment. But he endured it all through prayer and spiritual awakening. The Holy son showed himself to be an example of love for God and neighbour. He loved his family and homeland. For us, in our time, it is especially important in the education of the younger generation. Dear brothers and sisters! Let this monument of the Holy Passion Bearer Tsesarevich Alexei serve as a reminder of the highest heroism by the crowned Emperor Nicholas II. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in the creation and installation of the monument.
