Russian Orthodox Church Holy Synod Meets in the Kiev-Caves Lavra The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, chaired by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, began its meeting on July 26, 2010, at the Dormition Monastery of the Caves in Kiev. After the prayer ‘O Heavenly King’, Patriarch Kirill greeted the Holy Synod member and made some introductory remarks: ‘I cordially greet you at the regular session of the Holy Synod meeting at the Laura of Caves in Kiev, next to the relics of venerable fathers who laid the foundation of our Orthodox spiritual monastic feat and built on this foundation the principles of monastic life, which have given us in the past and the present the richest examples of holiness. ‘Standing next to these holy relics, one feels a special power and a special link of times just as we felt it today when we prayed at the first cathedral of all Russia – St. Sophia’s in Kiev. Passing before our mental eyes were names of wonderful men of God, the builders of Holy Rus, missionaries and ascetics. It was from this church that they set out to the vast lands of Rus – to the north, east and west. They were ascetic missionaries who went out into the heathen world relying only on the power of God. Nobody helped them; no authority supported them except the power of God. ‘Drawing support from this power, they Christianized the entire space which we describe today as the spiritual space of Holy Rus’. Therefore our visit to Kiev always provokes thoughts about the past. And since the agenda of our meeting today concerns the present, God grant that we take actions which will help the Church to fulfill her service also in the future’. The session is attended by the Holy Synod permanent members including His Beatitude Metropolitan Vladimir of Kiev and All Ukraine, Metropolitan Vladimir of St. Petersburg; Metropolitan Filaret of Minsk and Slutsk, Patriarchal Exarch to Belarus; Metropolitan Juvenaly of Krutitsy and Kolomna, Metropolitan Vladimir of Kishinev and All Moldova; Metropolitan Varsonofy of Saransk and Mordovia, chancellor of the Moscow Patriarchate; and Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Department for External Church Relations. Summoned for the present session are Metropolitan Agafangel of Odessa and Izmail, Archbishop Lev of Novrogod and Staraya Russa, Archbishop Ionafan of Abakan and Kyzyl, Archbishop Yelisey of Surozh, and Bishop Markell of Beltsy and Filesht. Patriarch Kirill calls to stop bloodshed in Syria immediately/Православие.Ru Patriarch Kirill calls to stop bloodshed in Syria immediately Moscow, May 22, 2013 Speaking at the receipt on the occasion of the feast of Easter, his Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Russia stated that violence of Christians " rights worldwide has become systematic, varying from direct physical violence in Syria and other countries to prohibition of Christian symbols and exclusion of Christian presence to the margins of social life throughout the World. " Today the World community is experiencing not a very good time. Celebrating the feast of Christ " s Resurrection solemnly, we must not forget that many of our brothers and sisters in Christ have not been able to join us in this universal joy because every day they are becoming victims of violence and aggression from militant extremists, " said Patriarch Kirill in his speech during the Paschal reception in the Foreign Affairs Ministry. " In spite of all efforts, the Syrian Hierarchs: Orthodox Metropolitan Paul of Aleppo and Alexandretta and Syriac Metropolitan Mar Grigorios Yohanna Ibrahim who were kidnapped on April 24 this year, are still in the hands of militants, " he added. According to Patriarch Kirill, the number of acts of violence against Christians of Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan and a number of other countries has considerably increased for last year; in Egypt and Libya, radicals’ oppression against the Christian minority has also forced minority representatives leave their homes; but the most acute situation is forming today in Syria. " Today " s news of persecutions of Christians is received with sorrow of heart. Violations of Christians " rights have obtained various forms: from direct violence to prohibition of Christian symbols and pushing the Christian presence to the margins of social life, " stressed the Patriarch. " At this difficult time we are calling on all the world community not to remain indifferent to this lawlessness. It is necessary to apply all efforts in order to stop the bloodshed immediately, to maintain open public dialogue aimed at protection of peace and stability, to prevent terrorist threats and religious discriminations, " concluded Patriarch Kirill.
