To continue the established tradition, the flock of the Patriarchal parishes in Rome, numerous pilgrims, and representatives of the Bulgarian, Serbian and Romanian Orthodox communities in the Italian capital gathered under the vaults of one of the oldest Christian churches in the Eternal City. Metropolitan Antonii of Central and Western Europe (Bulgarian Orthodox Church) officiated at the prayer service at the tomb of the holy enlightener of the Slavs. Concelebrating with him were Archimandrite Antony (Sevryuk), Secretary of the Administration of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Parishes in Italy; Archpriest Vyacheslav Bachin, rector of the Church of St Nicholas in Rome; and clerics of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church’s diocese in Western Europe. Ньюландсмит считал, что авторы музыки копт. гимнов не связывали себя муз. теорией и знаниями размеров и ритмов, но скорее руководствовались духовным смыслом гимна, выражая его через собственное ощущение (см.: Matta al-Mask n. 1993. P. 136). | Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Zakka Iwas dead at 80/Православие.Ru Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Zakka Iwas dead at 80 Damascus, Syria, March 24, 2014 The Patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church Ignatius Zakka Iwas, the leader of one of world " s oldest Christian sects, has died. He was 80. Syrian state news agency SANA said Iwas was admitted into a German hospital for treatment Feb. 20. He died on Friday in Germany after a long illness, the official news service said. Iwas " official title was the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East. His church, known as the Syrian Orthodox Church, was founded in the year 452 after a schism with the bulk of the world " s Christians. There are more than 4 million members, living in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq although there are also significant communities in Germany, Sweden and in the United States, where immigrants from the Near East introduced the faith in the late 19th century. Iwas was born in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. He was enthroned as patriarch in 1980 in St. George " s Patriarchal Cathedral in Damascus. Before that he served as metropolitan bishop of Mosul. He was the archbishop of Baghdad and Basra when he became patriarch. Since then, he has lived and worked in Damascus, the seat of the Syriac Orthodox Church. He also spent two years in the early 1960s in New York city, studying at the Episcopal Church " s General Theological Seminary in downtown Manhattan. When he conducted services at St. George Cathedral, located in the walled section of Damascus, Iwas had spoken in Syriac, a modern version of Aramaic — the language Jesus Christ is believed to have spoken. | Tweet Нравится Antiochian Western Diocese episcopal appointment causes concern October 28, 2016 On Wednesday, October 26, a press conference was held outside the St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral in Los Angeles, reports pokrov.org . The topic was unpleasant, but one which has many in the diocese deeply concerned—clergy and laity alike. In a letter dated October 6, His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America announced the appointment of Bishop Demetri as vicar bishop of the Diocese of the West, saying “I would like and expect you to welcome His Grace Bishop DEMETRI to your parishes and to treat him as though I myself was visiting you.” The concern arises from Bishop Demetri Matta Khoury’s February 25, 2004 conviction for attempted fourth degree criminal sexual misconduct. He was arrested July 9, 2003 after appearing plain-clothed and visibly intoxicated in a Michigan casino where he grabbed a woman’s breast. He stated that he didn’t remember the night, but plead guilty after viewing the casino’s security footage. He was sentenced to twenty-eight days in jail with two years of probation, and required to register as a sex offender, although his conviction and classification were both later revoked after he appealed in 2014. Bishop Demetri was granted retirement following his conviction, but while still a registered sex offender was appointed as auxiliary bishop for the Antiochian Archdiocese of Mexico, though the Synod again retired him in 2009 due to public outcry. Given this history, many are concerned about personal safety, and struggling to understand this move on the part of Met. | Damascus (Agenzia Fides) – “Every week some politician or some journalist pulls out some story on the two Metropolitan Bishops of Aleppo kidnapped. But so far they have always been unverifiable deductions. The reality is that almost four months have gone by since their kidnapping and we do not who kidnapped them”. This is what Metropolitan Timotheus Matta Fadil Alkhouri, patriarchal Assistant in the Syrian Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch reported to Fides Agency. The latest unverified rumors even come from the United States, where Republican politician Charlie Dent has taken steps to gather information with regards to the kidnapped bishops – the Syriac Orthodox Mar Gregorios Yohanna Ibrahim and the Greek Orthodox Boulos al-Yazigi – due to the insistence of the Syrian community in the city of Allentown. Anonymous sources close to the British diplomacy then attributed to the U.S. politician the deduction that the two Bishops, are still alive and are hostages in the Turkish territory of Islamist groups involved in a “plot” to move the seat of the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate from Damascus to Turkey, and influence the succession of the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch, the eighty-year-old Mar Ignatius Zakka I Iwas. In the light of these media speculations, the statement made a few days ago must be understood, in which the leaders of the Syriac Orthodox Church, emphasized that the patriarchal seat will not be moved from Damascus and have indignantly rejected the allegations spread by the media about possible intra-ecclesiastical rivalry among the causes of the kidnapping of the two bishops of Aleppo. “The truth”, Bishop Timotheus Matta says to Fides “is that today we do not know who really kidnapped them.
