Icon of the Mother of God “Enthroned” Commemorated on March 2/15 Photo: Days.Pravoslavie.Ru The “Enthroned” (or “Reigning”) Icon of the Mother of God appeared on March 2, 1917, the day of Tsar Nicholas’s abdication, in the village of Kolomskoye near Moscow. In February 1917, an elderly woman named Eudokia saw the Mother of God in a dream telling her to go to Kolomskoye to find a large blackened icon in a church. After the vision was repeated three times, she went to Kolomskoye to search for the icon with the priest Nicholas. In the basement of the church they found the icon and started wiping off the accumulated dust. Then they were able to see the Most Holy Theotokos wearing a crown and sitting on a throne. Immediately, Father Nicholas celebrated a service of Thanksgiving and an Akathist. News of the icon’s discovery spread throughout Russia, and there were several miracles of healing from physical and mental infirmities. As time went by, the icon renewed itself and became brighter and brighter. Particularly striking was the blood-red robe of the Virgin. Since the icon was revealed just as the Tsar abdicated, many people believed that the Queen of Heaven had assumed royal authority over the Russian land, and so the icon became known as the “Enthroned” (or Reigning) icon. It was discovered that the icon had come from the Ascension convent in Moscow. In 1812, before Napoleon’s invasion, this icon and others were sent to Kolomskoye’s Ascension church for safekeeping. Apparently forgotten, the icons were never returned to Moscow. A Service and Akathist to the “Enthroned” Icon were composed with the assistance of His Holiness Patriarch Tikhon (+ 1925). Many copies of the icon were venerated throughout Russia, but these were confiscated by the Soviets. The Service and Akathist to the icon were also forbidden to be served. The original icon is said to be in the Novodevichy Museum in Moscow, and there is a copy in the Church of the Kazan Mother of God in Kolomskoye. The “Enthroned” or “Reigning” Icon, which belongs to the Panachranta type, shows the Theotokos seated on a throne with Her Son. Rasputin mysterious figure, requires serious study—Bp. Tikhon (Shevkunov) Moscow, March 20, 2017 Photo: RIA-Novosti      Speaking at the State Historical Museum on Saturday, March 18, in a lecture entitled “The February Revolution of 1917: What Was It?” deputy abbot of Sretensky Monastery and chairman of the Patriarchal Cultural Council Bishop Tikhon (Shevkunov) encouraged the gathered crowd to draw lessons from the tragic events of the past. During the course of the talk, the topic of Gregory Rasputin was broached, who Bp. Tikhon called an “absolutely mysterious figure.” The head of the patriarchal council said he believes it necessary to conduct a “serious study” into the personality of Gregory Rasputin, whose memory has been intimately connected with that of the family of Russia’s last tsar, holy Martyr Nicholas II. In his talk he warned against making hasty judgments about Rasputin, touching upon those who are pushing for his canonization, reports RIA-Novosti . “There’s a whole group that’s trying now to declare Rasputin a saint. But wait—everything has to be very seriously investigated here. I don’t want to categorically say ‘no’ to anyone. Of course it is a question demanding the most serious research,” the bishop stated. Speaking for himself, Bp. Tikhon said that Rasputin “remains a completely mysterious figure: we meet such people in history, and we will know about them only at the Last Judgment.” “Truly he helped stopped the bleeding of the heir—Alexei Nikolaevich, and in this he was completely indispensable for the royal family, but there also exist objective facts … that speak about certain extremely unpleasant moments in his behavior… He was an unusual man, and often these testimonies offered to us dispute other facts and testimonies,” Vladyka noted. “They used him for undermining the government, and that is absolutely clear,” he said, calling again for serious research. He also noted that in his time, some members of the Church hierarchy related to Rasputin negatively, and some quite affectionately and respectfully. 20 марта 2017 г. Protests broke out in several cities, mosques were put to flames in Nis and Belgrade and 17 civilians and police officers were injured in the unrests in the Serbian capital. Representatives of the international community stated that the ethnically motivated violence against Serbs in KiM was pre-planned and carried out accordingly but it turned out that over 20.000 members of international forces were not ready, or were not willing, to prevent it. According to data from the Serbian intelligence sources, Ramus Haradinaj, one of the commanders of the terrorist Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), whom the ICTY acquitted of all charges for crimes against Serbs, pulled the strings of the March pogrom. Samedin Dzezairi, also known as Commander Hodza, had a key role in the attacks on the Serbs in Prizren, Urosevac and Orahovac. He was an Islamic terrorist who arrived in KiM to set up a branch of the “Party of Allah” – Hezbollah. After the pogrom of Serbs, the authorities arrested 270 Albanians and verdicts were reached against 143 individuals, 67 of whom were sent to prison while most of others were only made to pay fines. However, the key players, those from political structures and the former KLA, were not among them.      Despite promises that they will be able to return to their homes very soon, most of the expelled Serbs still live in collective centers, container settlements or in the homes of other people as “internally displaced people.” The terror by Albanian separatists was formally condemned by the UN Security Council and European officials, and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe condemned it through a resolution adopted on April 29. However, despite the atrocities and ethnic cleansing, the ethnic Albanians did not suffer any political sanctions. On the contrary, backed by the leading western countries, in February 2008, they unilaterally declared Kosovo an independent state, a move not accepted or recognized by the Serbian authorities. 19 марта 2014 г.

Hungarian government signs agreement to allocate million to restore Orthodox Churches Moscow, March 10, 2017 Photo: hungary.orthodoxia.org      On February 1, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban signed a government order to allocate a state grant to the Russian Orthodox Church’s Hungarian diocese for restoring and constructing new churches. Most recently, the ceremonial signing of the agreement on the transfer of funds took place on Thursday, March 9, according to the site of the Diocese of Hungary. The agreement on 2.4 billion forints (about million) was signed by Bishop Tikhon of Podolsk, administrator of the Hungarian diocese, and Hungary’s Minister of Social Resources Zoltan Balogh. The funds have been allocated for the restoration of Budapest’s Dormition Cathedral, Miskolc’s Holy Trinity Church, Tokaj’s Church of St. Nicholas of Myra, and the building of a new church in Hévíz. This is the first such large-scale cooperation between Hungary and the Russian Orthodox Church. The allocation of funds is a contribution not just to the restoring and building of churches, Bishop Tikhon believes, but to the preservation of the traditional Christian values of Hungary and Europe. The first Russian Orthodox parish on Hungarian territory was built in the eighteenth century in Tokaj, where there was a Russian Cossack garrison. This church has survived until today. Another Russian church appeared in 1803 on the outskirts of Budapest. 10 марта 2017 г. Religious representatives in Russia express their concern over the introduction of electronic cards/Православие.Ru Religious representatives in Russia express their concern over the introduction of electronic cards Moscow, March 25, 2011 On March 24, 2011, during a hearing in the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation on " The problem of citizens " refusal of electronic identification documents and provision for their rights, " representatives of traditional religions in Russia expressed their general concern over the large-scale project to introduce universal electronic cards (UEC), which could begin in Russia as soon as the year 2012, reports Patriarchia.ru . According to the Russian Orthodoxperiodical Tserkovny Vestnik, participating in the hearings were Bishop Longin of Saratov, President of the Central religious governance of Russian Moslems Mufti Albir Krganov, and representative of the traditional Buddhist camghas of Russia in Moscow Sanjay Lama Andrei Balzhirov. Chairman of the Synodal department for Church-society relations Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin conducted the round table discussion, and initiated the hearing. The representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church again emphasized that the government should uphold the possibility to choose, legislate the right to use traditional census forms, and make them available to citizens, so that they would be of equal weight with the electronic forms. " People who do not accept the electronic cards should not be subjected to discrimination, in realms including medical aide and social benefits, " noted Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin. In connection with this, Orthodox social activist organizations have made a number of proposals to correct the current legislation. His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia had already touched up this issue in February 2011 at the Council of Bishops. He stated that, " The Church understands the position of those people who do not wish to be subject to a control that would allow for the collection of wide-ranging information on their personal lives, which could potentially be used to discriminate against citizens according to their world-views. Speaking at the Bishops " Council in Moscow, he recalled that on November 12, 2015, the Supreme Rada approved of the draft on " Introducing Changes in the Codex of Ukrainian Laws on Labor (referring to harmonizing Ukrainian law in correspondence with European law in view of preventing and opposing discrimination), the Russian Church reports on its website. " This law introduces into the Ukrainian legislative field the new terms " sexual orientation, " and " gender identity. " Such novelties can become the first step towards promoting the homosexual lifestyle in Ukraine and attempts to legalize homosexual marriages, " the metropolitan said. He said that the Ukrainian Church, together with other religious organizations, offered alternative formulations to the Rada in order to prevent discrimination without introducing " terms alien to Christian morals " into the legislative field. " Unfortunately, our position has not been heard. Thus, the Bishops " Council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church again on January 29, 2016 urged the Ukrainian President to back up traditional moral values and protect people from promoting sinful lifestyles in society, " Metropolitan Onufry said. Tweet Нравится Atone for sins of revolution by building kind and just society—Patriarch Kirill Moscow, February 21, 2017 Photo: Orthodoxchurchquotes.com      Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia has called upon all Russians to build a good and just society as a means of repenting of the sins of the past. He broached the topic in connection with the centenary of the February Revolution after the Sunday Liturgy in Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral, reports Interfax-Religion . “We must make a very important conclusion from the events of a century ago: we must atone for their sins and those of our ancestors by our good works; we must build a kind and just society, we must overcome sin in our personal and communal lives, seeing the sorrows of those who are weak, feeble, hungry, bare, thirsty, or in prison or in hospitals,” the patriarch emphasized. He continued that if we place love, kindness, and longsuffering at the center of our lives it will become our personal participation in the atonement of the sins of our forefathers. The survival of human society is directly linked to good deeds which keep history from falling apart, the patriarch preached, calling on believers to build a “civilization of spirit, not a civilization of flesh.” Just as is currently happening in Ukraine, so in the years after the Russian revolution, brother rose up against brother, shedding blood with terrible cruelty Patriarch Kirill noted. And those who participated in the revolution later fell victim to Soviet repressions, receiving payment for their wicked deeds. “God’s judgment on the bloody events of 1917 has already happened in the history of our nation, just as it occurs in the personal life of every person,” he added. The Reigning Mother of God Icon, one of the holiest icons of Russia, was also brought to the Liturgy. It was found in the church in Kolomenskoye Park on March 15, 1917, the day that Tsar Nicholas II abdicated. 22 февраля 2017 г. Church raises over 97 million rubles to help Ukrainian civilians Moscow, March 3, 2015 Over 38 million rubles within 8 days – these are the first results of the new, second fundraising organized with the blessing of Patriarch Kirill in all churches of Russia on February 22, 2015, reports the Synodal Department for Church Charity and Social Ministry. The second fundraising was announced because nearly all the funds raised by the Church earlier – more than 59 million rubles – had been spent by the end of February on food, clothes, transportation, health services, rental and other targeted support for refugees. Owing to the new fundraising this help will be continued.      The first fundraising program in support of Ukrainian civilians was announced in churches of Russia on July 13, 2014. In total, over 97 million rubles have been transferred to the account of the Synodal Department for Charity in these two fundraising programs. “Today our priority is to deliver humanitarian aid to residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk Dioceses and targeted support of refugees on the territory of Russia,” says Bishop Panteleimon of Orekhovo-Zuyevo, chairman of the Synodal Department for Charity. “With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill we are doing our best to render aid to the categories of the most vulnerable refugees: single mothers with children, families with many children, disabled and elderly people”. Since the end of July the Church Headquarters to Aid Refugees from the Ukraine (based in Moscow) alone has received 17953 applications for aid. There is a telephone hotline for church assistance to refugees, in many regions refugees are living in church institutions (shelters, parish houses, monasteries and convents). Moreover, there are also church humanitarian aid storehouses. The largest storage facilities are situated in Rostov-on-the-Don (around 190 people there receive aid daily) and in Moscow (around 150 people receive clothes, food and other assistance daily). Over the past two weeks in Moscow alone 1690 people received aid from the church headquarters. From the Rostov-on-the-Don region and other regions of Russia Church representatives are sending humanitarian aid for residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk Dioceses. Reports on the raising and expenditure of funds are published on the official website of the Synodal Department for Charity, Diaconia.ru . At the present time over 38 million rubles are left on the account of the Synodal Department for Charity. You can donate funds to support Ukrainian civilians on the Synodal Department’s official website (through a banking card or by printing out a receipt): 8 марта 2015 г. There was also a strong seventh-century Mediterranean influence on the texts that I mentioned earlier; some of this influence was from Rome and Gaul, and some from Middle Eastern and North African exiles who had gathered in Rome. Also, you’ve got the strange depictions of animals, elongated dogs and other creatures that are quite distinctly Germanic, and the threelegged, so-called, triskeles that are Irish. There was mutual influence here. There is uncertainty about where many of these manuscripts actually originated. The Book of Kells could have come from a Northumbrian workshop via Iona. It contains an icon of the Mother of God that is pure Byzantine. So, in all these illuminated manuscripts you have the Romano-Greek Mediterranean influence, the Germanic influence, and the Irish influence, all beautifully synthesized. That is the reality and the beauty of the Church in this country – it had all of these elements. 30 марта 2009 г. Pelagianism: A heresy constructed by Pelagius, a fifth -century British lay ascetic, and Celestius, a priest, who denied the inheritance of the sin of Adam by his descendants, considering that each man is born innocent, and only thanks to moral freedom does he fall into sin. Pelagianism was condemned at the Third Ecumenical Council, along with Nestorianism.   Monothelitism: Monothelitism was a softened form of Monophysitism. While acknowledging two natures in Christ, the Monothelites taught that in Christ there was only one will – namely the Divine will. Adherents of the doctrine included several patriarchs of Constantinople who were later excommunicated (Pyrrhus, Paul, Theodore) and Honorius, Pope of Rome. The teaching was rejected as false at the Sixth Ecumenical Council.   Подпишитесь на рассылку Православие.Ru Рассылка выходит два раза в неделю: Предыдущий Следующий Смотри также Saint Edward the Martyr, King of England Dmitry Lapa Saint Edward the Martyr, King of England Commemorated: March 18/31 (Martyrdom) and September 3/16 (Local Translation of Relics) Dmitry Lapa St. Edward ascended the English throne in 975 at the age of only thirteen (or sixteen) after the sudden death of his father St. Edgar aged only thirty-two. Situation of religious minorities in Syria becomes even more menacing March 4, 2013 Statement of the Department for External Church Relations’ Communication Service Alarming news coming from different dioceses of the Orthodox Church of Antioch say that the situation of religious minorities in Syria becomes even more menacing due to the escalation of military confrontation in the country. For instance, on 18 February 2013, the diocesan council of the archdiocese of Aleppo published a statement about the situation in Aleppo, saying that 20% of the city had been ruined and 80% of its infrastructure had been damaged thus posing problems with electricity and supply of fresh water. Aleppo has been blockaded for seven months because of the battles and clashes in the north of Syria. Normal life in the city has been broken, people have lost their jobs, shops and 90% of schools have been closed. Goods of prime necessity in Aleppo went up in price five-ten times due to the energy crisis and economic blockade. Christian minority, not being a party to the conflict, raises up its voice for keeping peace in the country and appeals to the confronting parties to come to the negotiating table. Yet, Christians suffer from violence and scourge of war no less than other people. Most part of them have already fled from Aleppo to other cities of Syria and Lebanon, others left the city for Europe and North America, while the poor Christian families remain in the city. Many houses of Christians and their public building, including an old Christian cathedral, have been destroyed. Metropolitan of Aleppo and Alexandretta supports the families which need repair of their houses, medical treatment, medicaments, food and clothes. The ruling hierarch of Aleppo, Metropolitan Paul, and the diocesan council expressed sincere gratitude to all who render spiritual and material assistance to the archdiocese in this dramatic situation. Orthodox Christians of Aleppo offer up their prayers to God for the cessation of all forms of violence, for the beginning of negotiations between the conflicting parties, and for the re-establishment of peace for the much suffering people of Syria. The Holy Bishops’ Council of the Russian Orthodox Church meeting on February 2-5, 2013, expressed deep concern over the sharp aggravation of the situation of Christians in the Middle East and North Africa. The Council’s resolution underscores that “the vanishing of Christianity in the lands where it has existed for two millennia and where the main events of the sacred history happened would become a spiritual and historical tragedy.” DECR Communication Service 4 марта 2013 г. ...
